To help pin down more information: See if they (or their children) filled out a circa turn of the century USA county marriage application (not certificate). Not sure of the entire time span. This is a little-known, wonderful resource, as they contain much data on the parents of the bride and groom including addresses! Enlist the help of the USA county historical society in the area in which they settled. They may be able to help you obtain documents such as wills, marriage applications, land records (which give last place lived) etc. for a donation to their society. Be sure and subscribe to their periodical first, extremely interesting reading and it will demonstrate your interest in their USA county. Obtain an old USA county book via free interlibrary loan with the help of your reference librarian; many individuals are recorded because they were early settlers, were schoolteachers, held political office or belonged to particular religious, fraternal, or agricultural organizations. If you have a death date, you can order microfilmed copies of USA newspapers for the two days following death via your reference librarian; she has books that tell her which newspapers were in business in particular years for particular locations. This is also via free interlibrary loan. Death notices and obits. are usually on different pages so check carefully. The microfilmed 1900, 1910, and 1920 USA Federal Censuses at your local LDS Family History Center give date of immigration, whether naturalized or alien, date of naturalization, in addition to everything else! Ancestry.com has inexpensive booklets containing old city directory data for many states. These can fill in the gaps left by the loss of nearly all of the 1890 USA Federal Censuses. I found much information on my family in all of these resources.
