About 1852, the McGuirk family of Norther Ireland sent two or more children to America by way of England. A son,James, was about 11 or so. They changed their name to Short (later Shortt) on the voyage hoping it sounded less Irish. In 1932, James' daughter, Mary Ann Shortt Cassidy and her daughter, Emilene, from Connecticut visited the family in Ireland and Scotland. Their visas were for the Irish Free States. The pictures from that visit don't give names or places but show several family members. Im trying to locate any members of this family. James parents were thought to be Edward and Ada (Gilbert) but don't know if they used McGuirk or Short. No record of his parents coming to America. The family were butchers by trade in America.

I have created a hard copy family tree that is saved in the Iowa Historical library in Des Moines IA. it was college course and I traced the McCuddin name all the way back to coming to the US via Scotland by way of Ireland.

Susan, I have a similar situation as follows:Grandfather PATRICK F.Corby left Ireland via Liverpool Eng.at the age of 24. He was born 1874 in County Leitrim IRE. He sailed to the USA on the S.S.Britannic, in April 1898 & arrived NYC in May. PATRICK stayed with John his brother, at West 62nd St NYC. John is named after THEIR father JOHN from County Leitrim Ire. Do you have documentations your PATRICK came from CO.CORK? PATRICK F. moved from NYC to Scranton PA around 1900. He married a MARY ? last name unknown! and gave birth to my father John in March of 1902. Unfortunately, due to the Civil War in 1922 in Ireland, ALL records were destroyed for births, marriages and deaths for the 1800s'. If you go to GRIFFTHS EVALUATION you may come across information I missed.I based MY findings by going thru ALL counties in Ireland.Co.CO.Mayo CORK.CO.Kerry etc. My only findings were a total of 10 surnames I could consider, none with PATRICK in their HISTORY. I am currently reviewing microfilm documents at my local library for ANYthing related to his Life. my grandfather PATRICK F.Corby is interred at the Cathedral Cemetery. D.O.D.May, 1918. Did your PATRICK have a middle inital?siblings to your knowledge,Aunts or Uncles ? Hope I gave some insight. Best IRISH luck Dan

My info says, yes, Mary married John Kelly. When Annette mentions the Laurence b in 1795 and Jacobus in 1793, I'm positive these are our guys. Jacobus was the old Latin for James. And 1793 makes a little more sense than 1786 for a birthdate. The Lamb farm, by the way is located on the main highway between Gorey and Carnew. Our last visit in 2008 we stayed in a B&B in Carnew. Unfortunately, it is not one of those quaint, scenic Irish towns. Quite plain, actually.

Tom,

I have the children of James and Judith. Am I correct that their daughter Mary married John Kelly? This is important to me since my husband is descended from the Mary Lamb who was the daughter of Laurence and she married Edward McDonald (don't want to confuse the two Mary Lambs!) I have their census records and they were near neighbors with the Lambs.

Also, do you have birth and death records for Laurence Lamb and his wife Ann Doyle, who I believe was the sister of your Judith Doyle. I was interested to learn that Laurence had a son Patrick, who apparently stayed in Ireland. The only children that I had for him were Mary and Daniel (note the possibility of confusion since both Laurence and James named two of their children Mary and Daniel - but I believe that I have been able to follow their separate paths in the census and death data)

Thanks for the previous material
Sharon

The death date for James Lamb IS 9 Feb 1862. His wife Judith died 13 Dec 1854. They had 8 children: Mary, Daniel, Terrence, James, Ann, John,Sarah, Michael. Michael being the youngest and from what I found was born the year the Lambs left for Canada..1833. I have visited the graves of Judith, Terrence and Daniel at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Chatham. Judith's stone plainly states she was from Morta Bower, Wexford, Ireland. The Irish are quite into myths etc. Well the Townland (Morta Bower) was named after a huge rock which is located on the Lamb farm. It has some mystic qualities and mysteries attached to it. In fact the name, I believe, means "death rock" in Gaelic. The farm is now owned by bachelor farmer Dennis Nolan whose mother's maiden name was Doyle. At this point we can't prove a relationship to him but it is highly likely. He is a very accommodating and likeable guy, too. The last Lamb to own the farm was in 1947. This current family took ownership in 1953. As I mentioned previously a very large gravestone erected by Patrick Lamb (son of Laurence) is in the cemetery at Askemore (Askamore). I don't recall off hand but the parish is St.Pauls, I think. I misstated initially but James (1786) was my gr gr grandfather. My grandfather, John Lamb, was born in 1868 in Chatham but escaped to Detroit in the 1890s. You say you're in Ann Arbor. I was there last night ( at Hill Auditorium) as I live in Livonia. I have quite a bit of Lamb genealogy as my uncle Robert Lamb (a Basilian priest and Phd. in history) did what he could over the years to gather info. But, of course, it's much easier now. I have pictures of the farmhouse, the gravestone and the rock which I can send.

Unless you can find the shipping record try:www.theshipslist.com has thousands of records transcribed and many more still in the works. Not of the ships from Ireland but the steamships from Quebec to Montreal and Montreal to Upper Canada - Brockville etc.
I've spent hours looking for the Codd's. There is also two lists on the mainweb page of Protestants an Catholics who were willing to immigrate to Upper Canada. You will recognize a lot of the names although I didn't see any Lambs there. If you go to the webpage and click on passenger then put in Lamb on the next page the entries that are transcribed already will come up with any Lamb's from the steamship lists. Children under 12 were not listed by name.

I also got some 'assisted passengers' I sent you one yesterday. However, if you go back on the Wicklow message board to about the summer of 2008, you will see a number of lists. I also have the list from Jim Rees's book and his permission to use it and also the list on a CD of the folks who left from 1846. Mine are earlier from about 1830. The Codd's most went 'voluntarily' between 1818-1832. Not all were 'encouraged' a word used by FWilliam's Estate manager
William Haigh. I have a letter to FW from one of his larger leases to "Gentlemen" who then sub-let complaining that the 'encouragements' were taking all his good farmers, their families, friends and neighbours.

I looked through the 1798 Rebellion list of claimants this morning and then left the notes at my daughters. There were 4 Lamb who claimed compensation for damages. All were listed in Co.Carlow, Hacketstown. I will get back on Monday to you. My CD draw was broken by a grandaughter so I can't
use my home computer for that. I do have a photo copy of Wicklow claimants from the archives but no Carlow or Wexford on them. The CD is for all counties.

On a list of United Irishmen/Wicklow 1797-1804 www.censusfinder.com is a Daniel Lamb of Ballinagel (?)

Parish records are your best resource for who is whose but there are few online. I doubt I will be going to Ireland this year as I've pretty much got everything that was available to get on my last and 4th visit for research. I've spent about 40 hours looking through Parish records.
I do know a woman who is now a genealogist who would/could do it for you but I don't know what the fees are.

I do have a 1830 letter from 1500 tenants and sub-tenants of the Estate to FW, I will look to see if any Lambs signed it. I still haven't alphabetized the 10 legal size pages, so I will take one look through.

AC

Annette,

Many thanks for the leads on the Lambs. I will follow up on them. I do know that there were several marriages between Lambs and Kellys at that time.

Do you know if there is any way to determine exactly which members of James Lamb's family went with him to Canada? It is possible that he took the 2 young children of Lawrence with him, since one is living with him in Ridgetown, Ontario and the other is married and living with her family in the same township in the mid 1800's. It is also possible that this niece and nephrew migrated after the death of their father Lawrence.

Again, many thanks for your help!
Sharon

I must of not ben quite with it when I wrote that the PILOT records were mostly those that left when it is the other way around.

You may have difficulty with the dates 1786-1790 as the records for the All Saints Church in Carnew, Church of Ireland only exist from 1808 and few and far between start again in 1811. William Codd was born in 1786 and wife Hannah 1790 and I have been unable to find either nor their marriage in 1811. I have seen the original parish records.

There are some RC records for Wicklow on line but the only Laurence is born 1817 and 3 x James, 1821, 1826, 1827

1845 John Lamb married Margaret Kelly
1834 Judith Lamb married Nicholas Neville

www.granniesgenealogygarden.com don't know if I have given this before but good for early, early Upper Canada.

AC

Just to let you both know that www.familysearch.org "PILOT" has a number of records for the Lamb's. Mostly of course those that left but there are a record or two from Canada.
The RC records for Wicklow are now online and the Church of Ireland/Protestant records expected soon. Most of the early settlers to Upper Canada were the Protestants.

One record from the rentals from Coollattin Estates which included Motybower, Wexford was entry #225 an amount of 2 Pounds paid to John Lamb for his voyage to the Americas, dated April 25th. 1829

Annette

Tom,

How exciting to find someone else working on this line. It must have felt very good to actually visit the family site and graves in Ireland. We have been to Ireland, but that was before we were doing research on our ancestors.

I have very little info on the Lambs and would appreciate it if you could let me know the birth and death dates for Laurence and James. I found a James Lamb who died in Ontario on the 9th of February 1862, but I do not know if he is your/our James Lamb. I also have info that places a James Lamb at L.E. S. of Concession 12 in Harwich Twp., Kent, Ontario in 1836, but according to your posted info, that is too early for your ancestor to be County Kent. Do you know anything about that?

I am working under a bit of a handicap since all of my raw data is back home in Ann Arbor and we are currently in Florida. In any case, I look forward to hearing from you again. My husband is quite excitedat finding out about your connection!

With regards,
Sharon and Jim
James Lamb was my gr gr gr grandfather. He married Judith Doyle (of Wicklow) his brother Laurence married her sister, Ann. Laurence remained in Ireland and ran the Lamb farm in Mota Bower. James left for N America in 1833. He spent about 10 years in Brockville, Ontario ( work as pole boat operator) before moving his family south to the Chatham, Ontario farm about 1843. I have visited both the Lamb farm in Wexford, Ireland and the graves in Askamore on two occasions. I have stood on the rock (mota bower) for which the townland is named. The Lambs lived only 1/2 mile from the Wicklow border and quite near to Carnew. I've got quite a bit of Lamb info.

I believe they emigrated approx. 1844-47. They may have had relatives in Cincinnati, OH, as they settled there for approx. 5 years before settling in Dubuque, IA. New Orleans may have been their first port of entry, but that is not clear. Their 4th child was born in New Orleans.

Peter ... are you still out there? My research since our last communication indicates that Mary E Campbell McBrearty's father was not Bernard (1851) but his brother James (born 1854). James and then his son John ran a saloon in Ashland until the 1920s, and John Campbell apparently died there while on a visit with his wife. Some of James and John's descendants still live in the area.

Reply or contact me at bclmnts1@comcast.net.

I might be able to help you with this. I have the tenants from Montebower (sp) which I will have to look up. My husbands family was from Carnew in Wicklow. I have a large number of estate rents from the Coolattin Estate of Earl Fitzwilliam that extended into Wexford. I will look up what I have in the next day or two.

Currently there are few parish records on line, also I'm sure I never collected the name Lamb, unless married to someone I was looking for when going through records. I have spent 40 hours going through Parish records. I have an index of birth records for Wicklow and Wexford, there is only 1 Lawrence born 1795, and no James, a Jacobus 1793?
Perhaps another brother? The Wexford records for Lamb don't start till 1828. Do you know if Catholic or Protestant?

The Tithe records for Carnew are kept under Wexford at the National Archives, other records are in Wicklow.

I have a CD Irish Memorial Inscriptions by Brian Cantwell completed 1985. He recorded all readable gravestones in Wicklow and Wexford. There are only 5 of these. I cannot put on the message board due to rootsweb policies so you will need to contact me. codeannette@yahoo.ca

By the time of the Griffiths Valuations of 1853 there was only one Lamb in Motabower Townland, Carnew Parish, Barony of Gorey, Union of Shillelagh.

Motabower
2. Lawrence Lamb, leasing from Earl Fitzwilliam house, land 25 Acres 1 rood 5 perches (old english measurement)
3. Lawrence Lamb 38 Acres.3.31 house,office and land

Doyle is a very common name and difficult to research due to the numbers, there are 62 Judith Doyles born in Wicklow

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+Wicklow has some resources

www.igp-web.com + Wicklow different counties, different information but look for the photo project under archives.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

see www.bytown.net a Canadian website for 'extracts' from Coollattin Estate

We are looking for two Lamb brothers: Laurence and James, born between 1786 and 1790 in Mortbower (hamlet), Carnew Parish, Wexford Co., Ireland. Laurence and James married two Doyle sisters: Judith Ann and possibly Ann. James and Judith had 8 children between 1814 and 1835; Laurence and Ann had 2 children: Daniel and Mary between 1825 and 1831. James and Judith left Wexford, arriving in Ontario, Canada in about 1836 bringing with them the two children of Laurence and Ann. It is believed that Laurence and Ann may have died in Wexford. In addition, it is known that one daughter of James and Judith, Mary, married a John Kelly in Wexford in 1835/6 and Mary and John Kelly joined the migration to Canada.

Does anyone have any information on this family? Could someone in Wexford Co. look up the basic information for me or tell me where to go from here?

We are at a complete dead-end and any help would be greatly appreciated.

With regard,
Sharon and Jim McDonald

Thank you for your contact. Unfortunately there is no connection to the O'Briens. My ancestors did not come to Australia until late 1870s.
Incidently Lattin is in Co Tipperary not Co Clare. There may be a place called Latten in Co Clare.
Thanks again
John Hourigan

Most lists and boards will not accept an attachment. I downloaded a FREE app called Printkey 200 from the 'net. This program will take a "picture" of an area you want to send, copy it to a word doc, then right click on the word doc and copy to a post. Works fine, easily done, clearly shown and so far has not been rejected by any list or post. It is NOT and attachment. Hopefully, the app is still out there on the 'net.
