My wife is a great-grandaughter of August Mauruszat(anglicized Maurushat), the father of Edward (her grandfather) and Josef Mauruszat who emigrated to Jersey City, NJ, USA around 1910.
They were german speakers. I'm told the "-at" suffix on the surname indicates Prussian Lithuanian ethnicity. August lived in Wystyten, "Russia" (now Lithuania), which was just over the border from East Prussia, on the shores of the Wystyter See (Lake Vystitis). I would be interested to hear of any connections.

I have a marriage record for my grandparents Franz ZEMKE and Emmi STREMEL and it says something about the registration of my grandmother's birth someplace in Kreis Neidenburg. It's in old German which I can't decipher but looks something like Narzym. Would anyone be in a position to read the attached to decipher the exact details? I'm particularly interested to understand what records the birth register number relates to so I can try and get a copy of the record.

Prothman(n), Peter(s) in Guttenfeld

I've hit a brickwall with Anton Prothman(n) and Amalie Peters and am hoping this general posting will elicit some responses.

Anton Prothman (c. 1836-1907) was born in the village of Guttenfeld (near Mehlsack) in the administrative district of Konigsberg. Guttenfeld is now modern-day Dobrzynka, Poland. Amalie Peters (c. 1851-1933) and Anton were married about 1871 in Prussia. Marriage record not yet found. Children born to Anton and Amalie in East Prussia include:

Matilda (Mary) Prothman was born c. 1872.
Elizabeth Prothman was born May 20, 1875.
Frances (Franciska) Prothman was born about 1881.
Carl Dominic Prothman was born November 10, 1882.
Marie Prothman born January 1885.
Clara Prothman born August 1886.
Bernard Prothman born 1887 and died as an infant in Prussia.

Anton Prothmann (sic) immigrated to Little Rock, Arkansas December 13, 1888 via the SS "Australia" from Hamburg. Manifest of SS Australia: Anton age 52, farmer; Mathilde age 16; Elisabeth age 14; Franciska age 7; Dominikus age 4.

Amalie "Prodtmann" (sic) immigrated from Prussia with Clara & Marie Prothman a few months later. They sailed from Hamburg on the S.S. Australia and arrived in New York on 29 Jan 1889.

Amalie "Protman" (sic) went back again to Prussia and brought Ernst Peter on the ship "H.H.Meier" from Bremen, arriving in NY October 23, 1894. Ernest Peter and Augustus Peter later show up in the 1900 Arkansas Census living with Anton and Amalie Prothmann as their "nephews".

I've extensively searched what few records are available for Guttenfeld and nearby Mehlsack. If you have any information on the Guttenfeld Prothman family, it would be gratefully received. Thanks, Carol

I'm looking for any info that someone might have on George DAYSPRING. He was born in Königsberg, East Prussia in December, abt. 1841. He immigrated to the US abt. 1850 either with his family or without. I don't know. I believe he settled in Pennsylvania (maybe Cambria county). There's no census to prove this but he was in the Civil War and his company was recruited in Cambria county, Pennsylvania. I think he first married a Mary E. Kelly in 1866 in D.C. and had two children (Marian and Fannie). He then married Hannah Bloodgood around 1875 in New Jersey and had one child with her (the rest were from her previous marriage). Their child's name was Charles Cosmos or Cosmas Dayspring. He died in NJ on October 10, 1910.

They then had 6 children datin from 1841 to 1849. I believe she then died. He came back to England with the children.
At the bottom it say Wernersdorf 1864. Is this Prussia and what is it now? Some of my family think it may have been near Dusseldorf.

Parents were John and Catherine, brothers Andrew, Thomas (and perhaps Michael.) When settled in Wisconsin, the names were spelled Konkle, Konkel and Konkol.

How would I find birth information certificate or baptism certificate for Lawrence and marriage information for his parents? They were Roman Catholic.

Is anyone else researching this family?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Marney

She was from the Roggenhausen area.

I was looking at the Catholic Church records of Kiwitten, Heilsberg Kreis, Ost Preussen and found that the spelling was different from our family records. The films that I was looking at are full of records for the Behlaus in Kiwitten, Kerwienen, Polpen and numerous other towns in the area.

Tracing East Prussian thread in Poland

I have narrowed my search down to a region in Poland that used to be East Prussia when my family lived there. The Province is now called Olsztynskie, the town is called Kromarki (Prussian name: Kromargen). What is the best way for me in Australia (I only speak English and limited German) to find records for this region? Any advice?
Family Name I am tracing is Kammer.
Sincerely Kate

My ancestor, Wilhelm Humerich lists his birthplace as Prussia although I don't know exactly what city. I have heard from relatives that he was from near Hamburg in a small community called Selters-Nassau. I'm not sure if that makes sense; maybe some of it relates to his wife, Wilhelmina Snook. This would be mid 19th C.

Klidzen-Rosenburg - East Prussia.

I have very little information about my maternal grandparents and great-grandparents. My g.grandmother was Evdukia Klidzen-Rosenburg, apparently from East Prussia. She trained a doctor pre-WW1 - very unusual in those days. She married a Russian army officer, first name Constantine (last name unknown). Their daughter Larissa Constantinovna was born in Tomsk, Russia in 1917. They ended up in Harbin, Manchuria after the Russian Revolution. I have never seen Evdukia's name written - just heard it so this is a phonetic spelling. Is the name familiar to anyone? Is the surname a regional name? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. If anyone would like, I do have photos which I could send. Thank you.

My Gr.Grandmother, Juliana Auguste BARKOWSKI, b. 14 Dec 1868/9 remarried after the death of her husband one year after their arrival in America (1895). On the marriage application, she gave her birthplace as:

Galsdon, Joneiten, Tilsit, Germany

And her parents as:

Carl BARKOWSKI (BARKOWSKY) and Anna REINIES (or RICNES).

Juliana Auguste was m. abt 1890/91 in Germany to Heinrich (Wilhelm Heinrich) SCHULTZE, b. 13 July 1859. They left for America, arriving at the port of Baltimore in July, 1892. With them were, apparently, HIS daughter, Sophie Schultze, age 6, HER daughter, Maria, age 3 (my Grandmother) and their son, Friedrich Wilhelm Bernhardt Schultze, age 5 mos.

The baby Friedrich died 2 Aug 1892 (about when the arrived) in Mt. Olive, Macoupin Co., IL. A second son was b. 3 May 1893 in Mt. Olive. Heinrich was killed in a coal mine accident 25 July 1893.

My grandmother, Maria, b. 1888 in Germany maintained that she was raised as a SCHULTZE, but her birth father was August Von RABAT.

This family has been extremely hard to trace and any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sharon Buethner

Dear East Prussia board,

I am helping a co-worker, Agnes Freitac Hungerford help find out about her family. Her parents name was Andreas Freitac and Rosella Schurmann from the Pommerania region. Agnes was born on Jan 28th 1937 and was part of the evacuation to Germany in 1944-45. She doesn't know the names of her grandparents or where her mom and dad were married etc.

Where would the best place for me to start to look for these records from East Prussia? Thank you so much.
Dorothea McKenzie

August W. Quedeweit b.16Aug1860 in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany (from his OH Death Certificate). He immigrated to Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH, married Johana Balzer, and died there leaving apparently the only Quedeweit family in the USA. Are there currently Quedeweit or similar spelling in the Sovetsk area? Do others in the world who’s ancestors did not live in Dayton, OH, USA share the name? The name appears to be unusual and almost unique to the Tilsit area.

Surname Dummasch / "Dumafze", Tilsit, East Prussia/ Ostpreussen

Hello,
We read your entry an entry about the surname "Dummasch" here at www.rootsweb.com!

Unfortunatly, this entry was written for 10 years ago.

We do have our roots in East Prussia too.

My name is Christian Jacobsen and I live in the very nothern part of Germany, in Schleswig-Holstein. My mother, Hilde Jacobsen (born Dummasch) was born in 1934 in Labiau, East Prussia. In january in 1945 she and her family had to hide from East Prussia to Schleswig-Holstein. She had 3 sister and brothers.

I was born in 1959 and I am very interesseted about the history of my family. Are we related?
Do you or any other have more information about the history of the Dummasch family? We have a copy of regestry of baptizes from the Christus Church in Tilsit. It is about the batize of "David Dumafze" and his parents "Mikkel Dumafze" and "Elke Planowat..?". The surname "Dumafze" must be an earlier version of the surname "Dummasch".

We would very appreciate an answer!

Christian Jacobsen

I have finally traced my Schimanski, Bukowski, and Brasgalla families to this village. I wish to know if there is any way to access birth and death records as well.
I'd like to be able to find any info on my grandparents, all from Koenigsberg, with only 1 grandmother still living.

Fathers side : Heinrich Palakszt/Helga Sasse (b. ~1910)
Children: Peter (b. 1942), Renate (b. 1944)
Brother: Horst Palakszt
Professions: Painters

Mothers side: Richard Becker / Herta Thorun (b. ~1914)
Children: Helmut (b.~1930), Lore (b.~1935), Peter (b.~1941), Brigitte (b.16/11/1943).
Lutheran church family.
Professions: Painter/Millner
Ext family: Herta - Hella Thorun, Erna Thorun (married Kurt Newger), plus another 3?? sisters.
Richard - 11??? siblings.

To best of my knowledge, all were born in Koenigsberg, grandfathers Richard Becker and Heinrich Palakszt served in WW2, captured by British and Russian forces respectively. Grandmother Herta fled with children west at end of WW2. Grandmother Helga was interred in Russian camp. Uncle Helmut Becker was just old enough to join Hitler Youth prior to end of WW2.

Believe that both families spent time in a refugee settlement before being accepted into the west, settling in Pinneberg, before emmigrating to Australia in 1958-1960.

I'd like to be able to track down any history of both families.

Grandmother says that Palakszt name was adopted by her in-law parents or in-law grandparents but isn't aware of previous name (possibly Palax). Also believes that Sasse may have been Von Sasse 2-3 generations prior.

Her name was LIPSKI (1888-1971), and she was from Porwangen (now Pierwegi?). Miss LIPSKI visited her home, then on her return, traveled to U.S. with a 10-yr-old child. Herr WERNER's home was where they lived while visiting "the old country." I would appreciate any info on either Herr Werner or the family of Miss Lipski.

Many Thanks!

Königsburg neu markt - Yevjkendorf? - Kaliningrad

Can anyone help me find out where this place is? I have finally found sufficient evidence that my Hoth relatives lived in Königsburg,Neu Markt, but they state in 2 separate records in 1871 and 1895 that they were from a place that looks something like Yevjkendorf ? that I presume was in the area of Königsburg. I know they were German so I presume it is in East Prussia also. Ancestry.com has the town written as Yevy Kendorf but I do not feel this is correct. The hadnwriting in one record is unclear, it could be Yedjkendorf or Yedj Kendorf - or Yevj kendorf another record appears to have been filled out by a ship or immigration employee who was writing it as he heard it, so my guess, if this is the case, it that it's pronounced something like Vidikendorf - maybe that will help. If anyone has a clue that might shed a little light, I'd appreciate it!!! thanks

DENZIN from Neudorf Schoenlanke area

I'm attempting to trace the ancestors of Wilhemenia Mathilde (Emma) Denzin born Dec 20, 1852 or 53 in Neudorf, Schoenlanke, Germany died Lanham, NE, Feb 14, 1933. She was confirmed in a Lutheran Church in 1866 in Germany. In her youth she came to America, finding work in Illinois. Later she came to Crete, NE, where she married David Graff who died in 1879. The widow and her two children moved to Oketo, KS. On July 24th, 1881, Mrs. Graff was married to Ernest Zeibig at Marysville, KS. In 1902 the family moved to a farm near Lanham where they resided until 1910. "Emma" is buried in Lanham, NE. She may have had a brother named Julius.
I cannot seem to find any ancestry on this woman who is my GGrandmother. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

I would like to find more information about my great grandfather, Karl Edler VonGraeve.

Karl Edler VonGraeve grew up in East Prussia, now part of Poland, in the late 1800's. I believe his father's name was Adolf Hanst Edler Von Graeve.

I believe he was in some branch of the military. He lived in Bozecin - Groß Gottswalde (now Bozecin) near Mohrungen (now Morag).

Karl VonGraeve had a son, my mother's father, Carl VonGraeve. I believe my grandfather was born out of wedlock, the mother was J Butz. My grandfather came to America around 1899 with his mother but not with Karl Edler VonGraeve.

I would like to know more about Karl Edler VonGraeve:
Did he have other children/family?
Are there surviving family?
What was his occupation?
Was his heritage Polish, German, Prussian (I am not too clear on the areas history)?

If you could help me with this information I would appreciate it very much.

Family Tree:

Adolf Hanst Edler Von Graeve
Karl Edler VonGraeve
J Butz
Carl VonGraeve
Marion VonGraeve (my mother)
Michael Russo (me)
I'm researching the surname Luschei and feel the surname Luschey may be related and wonder about the others. Thanks for the advice.

I have the following ancestor information that I cannot trace back to East Prussia, Germany. I am hoping that somebody can help me identify what the surname could actually be. The surname in the United States was “Jokschies” and the father was called “Yerxa” by his friends. The mother's maiden name was Repalowitz. The Hannover emigration and Ellis Island immigration records for the mother and daughters both show the surname as “Jokschies”. We cannot find emigration/immigration records for the father.

My ancestors emigrated from Germany (Runisren or Rumszen, East Prussia) to the United States (Minnesota) in 1891/1892. Census records show that the father emigrated in 1891 and the mother and daughters in 1892. The son was left behind in East Prussia with a relative that owned an apothecary.

Johann Fredrick Jokschies b: 10 Aug 1859 d: 14 Mar 1938
Louise (nee Repalowitz) Jokschies b: 14 Dec 1857 d: 15 Oct 1902
Anna Laura Jokschies b: 20 May 1886 d: 05 Mar 1947
Auguste F Jokschies b: 26 Jul 1890 d: 02 Nov 1927
Edith Bertha Jokschies b: 06 Nov 1892 d: 11 Oct 1970
Son Jokschies (left in Germany with a relative that owned an apothecary)

Thank you for your help,
Pam
Hello! I am looking for information on August and Karoline Becker. They had 12 children. Franz,Gustav,Fritz,Ernst,Emil,George,Gertrude,Lena and Gretel. I am missing 2 names a boy and a girl. My Opa (Franz) was born Nov 1889 and his wife Anna Marie Tichelmann was also born in 1889. They were married in 1914 in Konigsberg as far as I know. I have many beautiful pics but they are written in script on back. Anyone know how to read that? I tried to learn it but whew!! They left Konigsberg Jan 1945 on ship Gefluchett? They had 3 children Freda (my grandmother) Kurt who died in early 40s in Italy I think, he was a soldier. Erich was also a soldier and was captured by Russians in abt 44 or 45. Yrs later when let go he married Lissy and they had 4 boys Robby,Elmar,Joachim and Andreas. I would love to find them but dont know where to start. If anyone has any idea I would so much appreciate any help on any of this. I ordered some microfilm from family history center (LDS) but was informed all records were kept in script. So we'll see how that goes. Danke
Annie

I am searching for the ancestors of ERNST ROBERT BUIKAT, born 21 Jul., 1925, East Prussia. His Father was GUSTAV BUIKAT and his Mother was EMMA RASCH.
GUSTAV BUIKAT'S Mother's maiden name was HEINRICH and EMMA RASCH'S Mother's maiden name was MARIA HARDER.
I have no idea where they were from in East Prussia and would appreciate any help I can get. I understand that that area was given to Poland after WWII.
Many thanks for your help.
Annette Carroll,
USA
