Looking for any information at all about the life of the Desens (Martin and Anne) who were from Schorin, Stolp, Pommern. They left Pommern in 1866 for the USA. Martin was born in 1803, and Anne was born in 1809. Where did they go to church? Who were their parents? What was the town like? Anne's maiden name was Gresens. When were they married? Anything at all.
Also looking for informtion on Friederick & Emelia Desens (son of Martin). Amalia was a Krueger. I do not know her date of birth. Friederick was born March 6, 1837 and was born about 1839. I do not know the exact date. When were they married? Any information would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on the above families from the area of Falkenwalde, Kr Saatzig, Pommern, Germany. Actually the Koehler name and the Prodoehl name are both spelled without the e and with an umlaut over the o.
Parts of the Koehler and Prodoehl families came to the US and parts stayed in Germany.
I know that a Koehler brother named August stayed in Germany and his children Elsa and Erich both wrote to relatives in the USA after both World Wars. Both of the children were in Berlin at the time they wrote. August died somewhere in Germany in 1823. The parents of August Kohler were Carl Kohler and Dorothea Prodohl.
I know that a sister of my Verch's stayed in Germany as the obituary for one lists a surviving sister as Mrs. Shellenberger. I have a photo of this woman that says she was 97 when she died. The two sisters who came to the US were born in 1841 and 1845 and died in 1922 and 1923. Their parents were Michael Verch and Louise Fenner (Finne).
Does anyone out there have any information on these families?
Thanks.
Judy
Looking for anyone with a connection or information on either a Zessin or Boelke family in the old county of Stolp, Pommern. The Boelke family (several spellings of this name) were from Labuhn. I believe that the Zessin family were in a town called Betlin or Bedlin. My part of each family came to the US in 1884, but did leave family behind in both those areas. Would love any helpful information.

I believe this area was Pomernia. It is slightly southwest of present day Gdansk, formerly Danzig. I'm looking for links to the families who stayed (?) and those who emigrated to Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and America. The name has many spelling variations, MISZEWSKI, MISCHEWSKI, MIECHOWSKI, MISCHOWSKI, MUSCHLEWSKI. VON MUSCHEWSKI. Thanks for your help,Lee Mischlispy (the US spelling) Kaplan

I am looking for information about my German family. My great grandfather Ferdinand J Klover (born 2 Nov, 1840) and his wife Caroline Louise Topel (born July, 1847) emigrated from Pomerania, Germany in May, 1873. They left from Bremen, Germany. They sailed on the ship Berlin and arrived in the port of Baltimore. They lived in Hartland, Shawano County, Wisconsin. My grandfather Otto Klover was born June 23, 1873 in Bonduel, Wisconsin, a month after they arrived. Does anyone have information they could share with me? I do have some information about them once they settled in Wisconsin. I would love to hear from someone to fill in the blanks.

My great grandparents immigrated to Benton Harbor, Michigan from Saaben,Kreis Rummelsburg,Pomerania (now named Zabno,Bytowski,Pomorskie,Poland)in May 1894. The family name is now spelled Salnoske, but on the ship passenger list it's spelled Zallnowsky. I'm speculating neither is the original spelling. If anyone has any information on this village or can provide advice on where to look or who to contact, it would be very much appreciated. Specificaaly, if anyone knows the name/address of the local Lutheran church which might have civil records, that would be a big help.

-Lisa

Cardemin?

Hello,
I have finally traced my great great grandfather Albert Dobberphul and his wife, Augusta, to their Hamburg ship record which shows them as being from a place called Cardemin. The ship manifest that was turned in when arriving in New York showed them as from Prussia, and I have searched all over to find some mention of this town in some other records and was able to find this website, http://www.geocities.com/regenwalde/villages.htm, which lists the village Kardemin as having the Polish name, Gardomino. I can not find any of these names on a map, and I know the site I gave before lists this as being in Kreis Regenwalde, Pomerania. Unfortunately, this hasn't helped me any since I am still unable to find any maps or confirmation that this village is even in the Kreis other than the one website.
If anyone would have any information regarding this location, please let me know!

Thank you,
Kelly

However some of their children went to
Kieckow, Kreis Belgard, Pommern, Prussia to marry and raise families. Where would I find either church or civil records from this area?

He was born in Stettin November 1856, then emigrated through Bremmen to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1883 on the S.S. America. He died there in the late 1920's.

To date I have not found any records to give me any clues.

I'm looking for information on KARL FISCHER (changed the spelling of his name to CARL H. FISHER whem came to U.S.A.), born about 24 Feb 1852 in Frienewalde, Prussia-Pomerania, Germany to AUGUST and WILHELMINA FISCHER. Some family believes KARL had two brothers, possibly one named James, others believe he had six sisters.

In 1873/74 he came to the U.S.A., and worked for a farmer, Zam Zam, at Caledonia, Wisconsin.

On 27 Jan 1878 he married BERTHA A. GARSKE / GARSKA in Portage, Wisconsin.

After they married, they moved to Archer, Merrick Co., Nebraska. The 1880 Census found them living in Prairie Creek Precinct, Merrick Co., Nebraska. There is a grove of trees there still called Fisher Grove, after this family.

In 1885 they moved by covered wagon to Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska, where they lived the rest of Carl's life.

Carl and BERTHA Fisher had 10 children: Anna, Rosa, William, Martha, Henry, CARL A., Benjamin, Elsie, Frank and Mabel Fisher.

Carl was killed when his wagon overturned in Rush Creek on 4 November 1903. Bertha remarried to Fred Feldhahn.

I have info and photos to share on this family. I'm REALLY looking for info on KARL FISCHER in Germany, and his family there. Thank you in advance.
We've been unable to find any information about his family in Germany. The family was told he was a sergeant in the Germany Army and didn't like the way things were going so he came to America. After working in the Pennsylvania-New York area for about 2 years he came to Chaska, MN, and from there to Belle Plaine, MN where he married and raised his family. He died in Belle Plaine in 1923.

Searching Prussian records of Julius Gottlieb Frederich Wuiske & Ida Caroline Fredericka Schuttkeker & their parents

Hi,

I have no idea how to go about searching for birth records of my husband's g-g-grandfather Julius Gottlieb Frederich Wuiske and g-g-grandmother Ida Caroline Fredericka Wuiske (nee Schuttkeker). Unfortunately, I do not know the names of their parents, and this is where I've been halted in my research. I believe both surnames had both been changed somewhat before or during their emigration to Australia on the "Duke of Westminster", arriving in Australia on 12th January 1886. I have no idea, but I'm guessing that it si possible the original surnames may have had either "ü" and/or "ë" in them, therefore may have been Wüske or Wüsche and Schüttkeker or Schüttkëker or Schüttkëkër or Schüttkekër, and the discrepancy in the surname occurred when the names were transcribed to English.

The following is the only information I know about their heritage:
Julius was born in Gross Lublow, Pommern, Prussia in 1859.
Ida was born in Kahmen, Prussia in 1858
Julius and Ida were married in Ossecken, Pommern, Prussia on 7th November 1884.
They had two children born in Prussia,
1. (daughter) First name Auguste or Augusta, Middle name Alemia or Amelia born in around 1883.
2. (son) Emiel or Emil Otto Carl born 27th September in Pommern.

If anyone has any ideas which may assist me in my endeavours, I keenly hope that you may contact me.
Either on this board or at mrsshipwreck@yahoo.com

Thank you in advance for all replies.

Kind regards,
Jade.

I am wondering if there are still relatives from these families living in Germany. I'm looking for relatives of Emil Carl Hartkopp from this area. Also looking for relatives of Herman William Carl Kienol (my grandfather), not sure what part of Germany he was from or names of his parents can't find any info on him at all. He married Ella Johana Hennrietta Hartkopp, Emil Hartkopps daughter.

Also traveling with them was an Albertine Mews, who I am guessing was a sister, but I have no confirmation of that. Albertine married Heinrich Gauger in August 1861, just a month after they arrived. Sophie's parents were Christian and Charlotte (Schultz) Mews. Does anyone have any confirmation of Sophie and Albertine being sisters? Any information on when Sophie died? August died in 1873, Sophie shows up on the 1880 census, then disappears.

I am researching my great grandfather August Mischka. Born between 1855-60 in "Germany" and died in 1910 in Toledo, Ohio. I have ran into lots of conflicting information about his homeland but I believe it is from Stolp, Prussia. On his marriage record and his 1900 census the last name is Mischke but in his 1910 census and his death certificate it is Mischka. On the 1920 census my grandfather had listed his father as being Polish, and my grandfather's sister listed August as being from "Staph" Germany which I believe she meant Stolp. These are flimsy clues but it is all that I have. Any information from August just says he came from Germany. Also, his parents names were Gotlieb Mischke and Bertie Mae.
Thank you.

Surname spelling changes Prussian to Polish to Prussian

Trying to track down a hypothesis posed by a cousin in Poland. Our surname, Dziewidek, is currently very rare in Poland. We are trying to go back pre 1880 to see if there might have been a variant of the surname. My grandfather, born in 1879 was said to have served in the Prussian army and also spoke German. That is one of the data points. We are also tracking a possible Lithuanian alternative. So - if the surname did originate in Prussia is there a way of converting the name from Polish back to Prussian? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather's family.
Ferdinand Friedrich Karl Discher and his parents (Wilhelm Discher and Ernestine, née Krone) left Zeplin / Köslin in the mid-late 1800 and went to Brazil (Brusque, SC)).
I would like to obtain more information on them and their ancestors.
The town name, Zeblin, is probably miss-spelled in the church records:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/c.sa/DSCF0516.JPG
http://www3.sympatico.ca/c.sa/DSCF0520.JPG

Could be Zeblin, Zewelin, etc. Interpretation of this name is welcome.

The marriage record (URLs above) says:
Tag und Ort der Geburt:
27. November 1856 zu Zeplin bei Kösslin in Pommern

He married in Brazil in 1890, so obviously the family emigrated between 1856 and 1890.

I would appreciate any information, be it actual data or suggestions for further research.

Thanks in advance
Carlos F Discher Sa
Montreal, Canada
http://www3.sympatico.ca/c.sa/

Before the war in Europe, the family lived at Stettin, near the Russian border, and later was at Tellingstedt in Schleiswig-Holstein before coming to the United States.

Story of Nikoley Family Has Drama, Human Appeal
BY RAY MERGEN

Story of the Nikoley family - father, mother, and their six sons and one daughter - is in many ways a twentieth century version of the "Swiss Family Robinson", lacking not one bit of the drama and human appeal that makes the famous old story still fascinating to children and grownups alike.

Shipwrecked by the tide of war which swept across Germany, often homeless and in distress, the family somehow managed to stay together through misfortunes which lasted more than a decade and landed in the United States this month, hoping to find a haven in which to build a new and useful life for parents and children.

On June 17, they arrived in Reno, where they are now being sheltered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Paterson, while the father, Ernst Nikoley, begins the labor of finding a job and providing a home for his family in a strange land, where he cannot even speak the language of the people from whom he must ask help.

Oldest of the seven children is Manfred, 17 years of age, who acts as interpreter for the whole family with the English he learned during his war-interrupted school years. He was born while the family still lived in Stettin, largest city on the Baltic Sea, near the Russian border, where Ernst Nikoley was employed in the calculation department of a machine factory.

Then came the war and, in 1939, Ernst Nikoley was called to serve in the German army in his home area, where he was on duty until the surrender in 1945. With the Russian advance across Poland and East Germany, civilians were flown out of the Stettin area and Mrs. Nikoley and her children, now six in number, were sent to Tellingstedt in Schleiswig-Holstein. There, Mr. Nikoley joined them at the close of the way and there they remained until they were admitted to the United States under the Kilgore Bill as displaced persons. The seventh child, Uwe, now four years old, was born in Tellingstedt.

Those were hard years in Tellingstedt. Work was scarce and in the general chaos that follows modern warfare and the invasion of a country by foreign armies, there was often little enough to eat and no money for luxuries. A barn was their shelter for a time and the entire family lived in three tiny rooms with only the barest necessities.

Through a family friendship dating back to the girlhood years of Mrs. Alvina Stumpf, mother of Mrs. Paterson, Ernst Nikoley knew the name of one person in the United States to whom he could turn for help - Mrs. Stumpf's uncle, who lived in Minnesota and who died before the letter appealing for his aid ever arrived in this country. In an almost incredible chain of circumstance and delay, Mrs. Stumpf eventually received the letter and the Paterson family at once began to send food and clothing to the Nikoley family in Germany, which helped immeasurably to make their life easier in recent years.

In 1950, Mrs. Paterson's son, Robert, joined a student tour at the University of Nevada bound for Europe and when the student group arrived in Tellingstedt, Mr. Nikoley arranged living quarters for them and helped them in their tour of the region. During this visit, Robert was impressed with the courage and spirit of the Nikoley family and in the appealing qualities of the children who, amid the poverty and devastation about them, had managed to retain a dauntless air of independence.

Finally, on June 3, the family left Bremerhaven for the United States. Like the Swiss Family Robison before them, they were able to salvage practically nothing from the life they left behind. Only the least of their personal belongings - a watch, a bit of jewelry cherished through the hard times, and the pitifully small store of clothing - came with them out of the old world.

The United States they saw first from a transcontinental bus. It seemed so vast, Ernst Nikoley gestured with his hands, "gross, gross", in trying to express his feelings at the first glimpse of his new home. Here, he likes the activity, the bustle of people moving about their daily work. It is easy to see that he is a man who has no patience with idleness, nor with the begging for an easy way out. Mrs. Nikoley is gentle, with a quick twinkle of humor in her eyes. "It is the people", she adds through her oldest son's interpretation. "The people have been good to us". There is a look of gratitude on her face that has washed away all of the anxiety and fear she must have felt many times in the old world for the future of her children.

The youngsters are sturdy, but their faces area a shade too peaked, the circles a bit too deep under their blue eyes. But, it is obvious that the sunshine and plenty of milk will turn them into typically brown and wiry Americans before too long. With the natural ease of well-reared children, they accept their new surroundings happily and serenely, secure in the strength that comes from the love in a close-knit, affectionate family.

Manfred will enter Reno High School this fall as a junior student. During the war years, he was forced to miss one term of school, but he is quick and eager to learn. His ambition is to become a newspaperman, he says. The only girl in a family of six brothers, Brigette, at 15, is quiet and delightfully shy, but there is no lack of poise and it is evident that coping with six brothers has given her a touch of firmness. She likes music and singing. Lother is 14 and he, too, has an ear for music. The piano at the Paterson home attracts him more often than any of the others. Hans, at 13, is showing an interest in building, working with his hands, in putting things together. Wolfgang, 11, and Ingo, 9, are typical small boys. ON the afternoon the photographer came to take their picture, they were engrossed in peddling up and down the sidewalk on a large and battered tricycle, squabbling amiably over whose turn was next, with little Uwe, the four-year-old, the baby of the family, trailing along in the fashion of baby brothers since time began.

Mr. Nikoley and Manfred have been offered work with a local firm, which they eagerly accepted, but Mr. Nikoley hopes to find employment later in the field for which he has been trained. The younger boys are looking forward to the day when they will know sufficient English to get jobs as route boys for the newspapers and to run errands for money. Coping with the language barrier is their first problem. Happily enough, they found in Reno a fellow countryman, Hans Mumm, whose home in Germany was only a few miles from that of the Nikoley family years ago, and they have spent several happy hours recalling friends and events known to each of them.

Also since the arrival of the Nikoley family, Mrs. Paterson invited members of the student tour who knew them in Tellingstedt to the home to renew their friendships. Members of the Daughter of the American Colonist, of which Mrs. Paterson is president, are assisting with the rehabilitation of the family and many friends and neighbors of the Patersons have added their bit to make the Nikoley family fell at home in their new world.
=============
The Nikoley family that went to America from Germany in 1952 is as follows:

Ernst August Nikoley, born 20 May 1913 GER, died 15 Jan 1999 (probably in Reno, NV, USA). He married Selma Ella Unknown 1934 in GER. She was born 12 Oct 1914 GER and died 02 Dec 2001 (probably in CA or NV, USA). Their children were:

1. Manfred Lothar Nikoley, born 19 Apr 1935 Stettin, GER and died Dec 1978 (probably in Reno, Nevada, USA).

2. Brigette Helga Nikoley, born c. 1937 Stettin, GER; married George L. Knott. One known child: George L. Knott, Jr.

3. Lothar Ernst Nikoley, born c. 1938 Stettin, GER; married Bonny LaRue Goodsell Sep 1959 Reno, NV, USA.

4. Hans Alexander Nikoley, born c. 1939 Stettin, GER; married Mary Helen Frohlich 25 Jun 1961 Reno, NV, USA. Two known children, names unknown.

5. Wolfgang E. Nikoley, born c. 1941 Stettin, GER; married Rebecca D. Boyer Jul 1977 Reno, NV, USA.

6. Ingo G. Nikoley, born c. 1943 Stettin, GER; married (1) Constance Leary, married (2) Cathy Ann Adlish.

7. Infant Nikoley (sex unknown), born and died c. 1945 GER.

8. Uwe K. Nikoley, born c. 1948 Tellingstedt, Schleiswig-Holstein, GER; married Janice J. Sahakian 31 Jul 1971; divorced 01 Feb 1977.

The family departed Germany from Bremerhaven and arrived in New York, NY, USA on 11 Jun 1952. From NY, the family migrated to Reno, NV, USA in Jun 1952.

I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfathers family. Three of his sons came to United States. My Grandfather came in 1883 to Nebraska and his brother came in 1886. I have found names on Family Search webpage but it does not show the submitter and there were 9 children all together.

My Grandfather married after he came to Nebraska and a cousin has a bible that has some dates and the were all born in Guntershagen and some are buried in Mark-Friedland, Germany but Pommern is part of Poland now, I don't know where to go from the information I have already. Is there any way to get information from this area.
Thanks
