My nephew andKI are concentrating on the Skroch history now--my great grandfather was Mathias Skroch who married Anna Neva. I am not very organized at present, but working on it. Thank you again and let's keep in touch. Betty Brooks

Don't worry too much, just remember it is difficult enough with poor transcribing (most of the census returns and BMD registers were, I understand, transcribed in India!) but it is really important to put all the details correct as far as you have them, for people to help. I have looked at the 1871 census and it is quite clear that the town begins with E and ends with burg - so I feel pretty sure it is Eilenburg. Yes it is in Saxony today, but due to the complications of 19th century European history it was ceded to the King of Prussia in 1815, along with Torgau and Preussisch Delitsch and became one of the leading textile manufacturing towns in Prussia. They probably have a web site so it might be worth seeing if they have any sort of contact address and writing to ask if they have any record. However, there is one caveat. Eilenburg was one of the unfortunate towns which was declared as a "fortress" by the Nazis at the end of WW2 and refused to surrender to the Americans. Consequently having escaped much damage during the actual war years they were almost blown out of existence in the last few days which may mean many records were lost. Best of luck anyway, hope this helps.

My apologies, I am new at this. Louisa Schmidt married a Johannis Groll in 1850 at Holy Trinity Parish, Kingston-on Hull. I cannot find any info on her until the England 1861 census where she is listed as widow Louisa Gull living with her children, Caroline, Jacob, Peter and John and a boarder, James Hewitt. On the 1871 census she has now married James Hewitt and is listed as Jane Hewitt, living in Gainsbourgh along with her children Peter 14 and John 11 from her previous marriage, listed with the surname Hewitt, as well as 3 daughters she had with James; Jane 7, Elizabeth 4 and Ann aged 5mths. It is on this census that she lists Preußen,Elanbury as place of both. This is what started my such on where she came from in Prussia

Could I politely suggest that if you want help you should try to be really accurate with your details. Nothing returns on the 1861 or 1871 census under Louisa Schmidt but there is a Caroline L. Schmidt aged 32 on the 1861 in Brighton, aged 39 on 1871 in Tupsley, Herefordshire - both born in Germany and the place is quite clearly Lauenburg which is in Schleswig-Holstein. There is a Louisa aged 45 on the 1881 working as a housemaid in Soho. Incidentally there is no "Preuben". What looks like a "b" is the German "sharp s" - Preussen. I don't know where you got your other details but hope this helps.

Sorry - it's England Census. On the 1861 census it states Germany as place of birth; the 1871 states Preuben Elanbury and on the 1881 census it states (Nbs) Preuben. I believe the NBS indicates that she now is a naturalized British subject.
Dawn,

Can you travel to the library at Independence? If so, there is a book written by a family that traveled to Poland. I can't remember the name. I also bought vol 1 of "A Small Town Goes to War"...biographies of vets during WWII. I have a 100 year celebration book of St. Peter & Paul church, Independence, Wi. 1875 - 1975. I have these with me in Arizona. Have you tried the website Genforum.com? Go to Countries and then to Germany/Prussia
and put out a search. If I can do any searching when I get back in Wisconsin please let me know.

Paul Wald from Prussia died in St. Louis

Hi, I'm looking for more information on Paul Wald who was born in Prussia on 20 May 1840. I'm looking for parents or siblings or an exact birth place. After coming to America, he served as a clergyman at two churches in both Jefferson and Clearfield counties in the mid 1860s in Pennsylvania. He married Barbara Walker,(abt 1866) the daughter of Christian and Catharine (Ulrich) Walker from Germany.

In 1870, Paul and Barbara are living in Muskingum, Washington, Ohio. They have a son William (born abt. 1866) and a son Emile (b. abt 1869). In 1880, Paul was widowed and was living with Emile (age 12) and Rosa (age 9, b. abt 1871 in Ohio) in St. Louis (District 12), Missouri. So far, I haven't been able to find a death date or location for Barbara. I believe that Paul died on 10 May 1886 in St. Louis, MO and is buried at Gatewood Gardens Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri. I've found their son's death information (Emile). He was born 22 Oct 1868 in Madison, Wisconsin and died 15 Dec 1946 in Ellsville, St. Louis, Missouri. He was married to Cad Unknown and had a daughter Lucille who was born around 1899. He is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery. If anyone can help me find information on this family, I would be very grateful! Thanks! Barb

I have not been able to find this place on any old maps; it may be an error in transcribing, possibly Elenburg?. Any suggestions?

Hi Nicole

I just recently found that my husbands family is connected to the same couple you are looking for. One of their daughters (presuming that in the 7 you say they had...none of which i have found......more than one daughter) Anyway, her name was Mary Alford, it is assumed that she was born in 1875, though as you know the ship didn't get to New Zealand until the 4th Aug 1876. Apparently the families were all from KOKOSZKI in Poland, again as you know some was part of Prussa etc. If you can obatin a copy of Polish Settlers in Taranaki 1876 - 1976 it gives the stories, though the Alfuth (Alford family are barely mentioned, i borrowed mine from the Library.

Do you know the names of the rest of the children, it would be lovely to have. Also i have another relative who has a photo of Mary Alford (the daughter) who married into my husbands family William Ridley in 1899.

Hope i helped, i know it is a long time since you started your search, take care.

Claire

I'm responding to a post written in 2002 but hope you still get this message. It sent chills through me to read it. I have recently began researching the Neisinger side of my family tree. I am the great grandaughter of Frank Neisinger, b.1912 in MN (along with 6 siblings). I'm looking at a 1920 cenus from the town of Monroe, WA (in which a lot of us still live) It looks like Frank is the son of Paul, born in WI, who is the son of Paul. It states that he was born in Germany but now you've got me wondering if it was Prussia. It also says that he came to the U.S. in 1865 and that he was widowed. Does any of this ring a bell?

After the line I got to Talacko who lived in Chrudim region. In addition, the second part of this family lived in East Prussia. Regarding the information about the past of our family, most of the information I got.

As for my relatives, so actually I have no one else except the parents. I would most like to know if you are in the world, people who belong to the genus Talacko of Jestetic.
STRUNCK / OBLADEN Family from Pesch

My 3rd Great Grandparents Maria Anna STRUNCK & Mathias Sylvester OBLADEN lived and raised four children in the village of Pesch (in the Eifel region), Euskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany before they emigrated from Prussia to Wisconsin, USA in 1844. Their first child was born/baptized in Pesch on 31 August 1824. There is no marriage record in the Pesch church records. I do not know who Maria Anna STRUNCK's parents are. Based upon her death record, her YoB is about 1790. If you have information that would help me learn more about this STRUNCK family, I would appreciate it. Thank you. p r o s t @ p j s n e t . c o m

Thies/Theis Lennep, Rheinland, Preussen

So I'm just looking for either some suggestions or ideas. Looking for August Thies (Wilhemina Zuchow) who came from Prussia in ~ 1873 to the US and made their way to Cleveland, OH. I have no idea where they landed as I have not found immigration/naturalization records. The ONLY connection I have found thus far to Germany is in a christening record from March 9, 1845 in Evangelisch, Lennep, Rheinland, Preussen. Parents names listed as Johann Heinrich Theis and Helena Schopphoff. I guess I'm just looking for something else, to point towards different resources. I am not even sure the Christening record is his, it just happened to pop up and it's around roughly the correct time... but I'm not sure it's even his so maybe someone can shed some light as to if it is or is not. I appreciate anything you can offer :o) Thank you so much!

Jen
