My great-grandfather was from Danzig, Poland. He wrote (although his info wasn't always accurate) that his ancestor, surname Baman, was a soldier in a war when the North Sea froze over and Sweden attacked Prussia. He killed so many enemy they called him "Baman of the Battlefield" which became Baman von Totenhoff; our family changed the t's to d's and dropped the von.

The name Dodenhoff arrives in Danzig in the 1500's from the Netherlands. We have not confirmed the above story or the name Baman or Totenhoff, although we've always been told our name means "death house." If you would like more information, please let me know.

I am publishing a manuscript which has come into my possession - a memoir of the Dohna family just before the First World War written by the French governess of Burggraf Richard's children: Alexander, Ursula-Anna, Victor-Adalbert, Christof & Agnes. I would be most grateful for any info on the family and especially the governess, who wrote her memoir in London in 1939 under the name of Fernande Rosset. Can't trace her anywhere, beginning to think it's a nom de plume!

Married Johanne Luise Schatz 10/27/1844 in same town. They had 7 children that lived to adulthood. One was Christian Friedrick Wilhelm Buchholz b 5/10/1850. My ggf was Franz Herman Buchholz born 6 yr later. The family immigrated to US from Bremen in 1868. First lived near Madison, WI in Dane County, then moved to Monroe County WI (near Wilton, WI). I am still tracing where they lived in Dane County and their move to Monroe County. I have more if this is also your relative. Gary

I am researching the Pinker family, my wife's grandmother. She had a sister named Frances Pinker (b1875) who married a Joseph Spandel (b1870) (they used the e). They had 5 children, Loretta (Erickson), Leo, Irene, Richard and Albert.
They lived in Hennepin county.

I don't know when or how they came to this country. I think the Pinkers came from Kötzting, Bavaria, and maybe originally from Bohemia.

Is any of this familiar?

Neal

Nuthmann came from Prussia? The Kingdom of Hanover became part of Prussia in 1866 only.
Albin

Charles Becker was indeed the father of Frank Becker as you mention.I am Frank's great grandson. Are you descended from Frank? Charles was a watchmaker and when he and Mary Kessler lived in Ohio in 1837 there was a financial panic in the government and they went by wagon to Chicago where people told him not to go to Rockford, but to Dixon which was an up and coming community. They went on to Dixon thus he became the first jeweler west of Chicago in 1839. Charles died young and left Mary with several children on the farm west of Dixon. Frank had diabetes and went blind at a young age. I have a lot of stories about this family. Would love to hear from you. I am retired and live in Orlando FL. Jack

I am from anthony or (Anton)who was without a "T" initially, but apparently added it later, was born 1837 in Ger. he married Gertrude Basten in Green Bay area round 1864, they had one son John, who had a "T". John married
Emelia Huth and they had 12 kids of which 3 died around birth. Louis Leonard was my grandfather, Robert my dad and now me. This T thing is weird seems that John was the only one of the 6 kids Peter Joseph had that has it, some day I hope to find out why.
In fact, August Heinrich Georg Nuthmann was born 14.08.1843 in Metzendorf (parish of Hittfeld). His parents were Johann Gottlieb Nuthmann and Johanna Dorothea Gliesmann who had married 15.02.1839 in Hittfeld. Johann Gottlieb N. came from Hamburg.
