Simeon
Reid (1898 - 1988) was my uncle by marriage. Uncle Simmy, as we knew him, and I knew him well along with his wife and children, married my mother's sister,
Rosanna Cummings, from
Whales Brook (now Brownsdale), Trinity
Bay. The family moved to Montreal in 1951.
Simmy's father was
Moses Reid. His mother was Elizabeth
Garland from
Lower Island
Cove,
Conception Bay. Moses and Elizabeth had 7 children: Jonathon (died young, fell through the ice),
Simeon, Walter,
Abel, Dinah,
Caleb and Ruby.
Moses died when Simmy was 8 years old. Elizabeth remarried to William
Bursey and had 3 more children: Alan, Arthur and Franklin. (I married one of Franklin's daughters).
William died and Elizabeth married once again, this time to Francis
Pynn, 23 years her elder. They had no children. Francis died and Elizabeth (
Nanny Pynn as she was called) lived as a widow in Francis's house in New
Melbourne. I met her several times before she died in the early 1960s on Bell Island, I believe (her daughter Dinah was living there).
According to the 1921 Newfoundland Census for New
Melbourne, Elizabeth
Pynn and Francis
Pynn were living at that time with 6 children in New
Melbourne. Elizabeth was 44 and Francis was 67. By 1921
Simeon had married
Rosanna Cummings and they had 1 child, Sarah (
Sadie).
The six children living with Elizabeth and Francis in 1921 were:Walter
Reid, 21;
Abel Reid, 19; Dinah
Reid, 18; Allan
Bursey, 12; Arthur
Bursey, 10, and Franklin (Frank)
Bursey, 5.
