Yes, I am working on the Slack/Silk line, so if you are familiar with the families it may be easier for you to just send me all you have. I just learned today of a Slack who died in WWII; Kenneth Earl Clifford Slack died on May 9, 1945 serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England. He is the son of William and Lottie (Whiteside) Slack who were in Toronto at the time but I believe grew up in Dufferin county.

I saw in the obit for Pat Silk that two of his boys were in the service during WWII and I looked briefly for them in the military records but I don't think either died in the service.

I know of one other veteran in the family with Dufferin connections that died in WWI: William Albert McClinchey. William was the son of Margaret(Watson) McClinchey who was the daughter of Margaret (Slack) Watson. He died April 2, 1918 and is buried in the Wailly Orchard Cemetery in France. His mother and a sister died in the Great Fire of 1916 around Matheson, so I think he was living up there when he enlisted. I have it that his brother James McClinchey died while in military training for WWI, but I have been unable to confirm this.

We are covering all people who have a Dufferin county connection in any conflict. So we have worked on WWII, I have a couple of obits from Silks that were in WWII and a couple of names with no information.

Are you interested in the Silk / Slack lines? I did notice the people we have talked about so far have been connected through the Slacks. There is at least one more Silk in WWI but he is not part of one of the Silk / Slack lines.

Sure can....

Shelburne Free Press, August 29, 1918 - PTE. ARTHUR R. SIMMONS: Official information was received by his parents in Dundalk on Saturday last, August 24th, announcing the death of Pte. Arthur R. Simmons, who was killed in action on August 14th. "Art" was a young man of 24 years, and prior to enlisting in the 164th Halton-Dufferin Battalion in the early months of 1916, was teller in the Union Bank at Shelburne. He went overseas in April, 1917, with the band of that battalion. When the band was broken up he was transferred to the 116th Canadian Infantry battalion in France, where he had been engaged up to the time of his death. Pte. Simmons was a valued member of the bank staff and the citizen's band and his death is being regretted by all who knew him here. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Simmons, have the sympathy of this community in the loss of their only child and son. The late Pte. Simmons was a grandson of Mrs. Henry Silk and a nephew of Messrs Robt. and William Silk of Shelburne. He was born here and as a mark of respect the flag on the town hall was raised to half-mast for a couple of days.

Shelburne Free Press & Economist - August 6, 1942 - A. V. ("PAT") SILK BURIED WEDNESDAY: Interment took place in Shelburne Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon of a widely known First Great War veteran, Alfred ("Pat") Victor Silk, who died in Lord Dufferin Hospital Sunday night in his 46th year, following an extended illness. Service at the Gamble Funeral Home was conducted by Rev. Albert Mills, under auspices of Shelburne branch No. 220 of the Canadian Legion. A son of Mrs. and the late William Silk, "Pat" was born in Shelburne and enlisted with the 154th Battalion in the First Great War. Later he transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers, with whom he served until demobilization in 1919. Back in Canada he went into business in Woodstock for a short time before setting up in the harness and leather trade here. Ten years later he entered the contracting business and remained until taking ill over a year ago. A member of the local branch of the Canadian Legion, he was a widely known curler and for a time was active in amateur lacrosse and hockey circles. Prior to the Rotary Club taking over the local rinks, Mr. Silk was manager of the skating rink. He was also a former side-drummer in Shelburne Citizens' Band. Surviving are the Widow, the former Rilla Harrison, and three sons, Arthur, Alvin and Reggie, the latter overseas. Reggie is also on active service and Arthur was recently given an honorable discharge after several months' service in Canada. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Mrs. E. C. Mandley, Shelburne; Mrs. H. B. Church, Orangeville; Ed., Shelburne; Clarence, Pickering, and Bert, Toronto. Pallbearers at the service Wednesday were all former buddies of the 164th Battalion: Messrs. Geo. Yokom, Russell Rennicks, Cecil Reid, William Hall, William Farnell and Stanley Lomas.

Great, I look forward to you putting it on the internet. I am curious now about Carman Silk, the brother of Melville. Do you have any idea why he would be serving in the US military in 1920? I don't find his attestation papers in the Canadian Archives site, but since he was born in 1902 he may have been too young. I do find him listed on the Dufferin County Roll of Service here:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onduffer/ww1rolls.html

So, I am wondering if he saw service in WWI? Do you have any information on him? I know he was back in Ontario in 1924 when he got married.

Here is his obit:

Shelburne Free Press, October 28, 1920 - DEATH OF WAR VETERAN: In the death early on Wednesday morning of this week of Melville J. H. Silk, elder son of Mrs. R. C. Silk, Main street east, another name is added to the list of local casualties directly attributable to the great war. "Mel," as he was familiarly known, joined up with the 164th Battalion in Shelburne in the early days of its organization and went overseas with that battalion in April, 1917. After some months spent in training in England he went to France where he was severely gassed and contacted pleurisy and was returned to England for treatment, returning to Canada on Dec. 10th, 1918. Upon his arrival here he took treatment for several weeks in Spadina Military Hospital, Toronto, later being transferred to the Military Hospital at Guelph. His condition showed no signs of improvement and he was permitted to return to his home here in June last, where he has awaited the inevitable call. The deceased, who was in his 27th year, was highly respected by his comrades and associates and his passing is regretted by the whole community. He was an honorary member of L.O.L. No. 1321, Shelburne, and a member of the local branch of the G.W.V.A. Besides his widowed mother he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Bert Trotter, Peterborough; Mrs. A. W. Parsons, Violet Hill, and Miss Reta Silk, at home, and one brother, Carmen Silk, with the Tank Corps of the United States Regulars at Camp Mead, Md. Funeral arrangements were not completed when we went to press.

The death record for Melville J. H. Silk - Oct. 27 1920 in Shelburne, Dufferin County - gives his occupation as 'returned soldier' and cause of death as 'pulmonary tubercolosis'. Perhaps he contracted the illness while overseas.
If you would like to see a copy of the death registration, please contact me directly at sheiladavidson@sympatico.ca to provide your email address.

Thanks, that is interesting. I have a death date of 1920 for Melville, but maybe he died from wounds he suffered in the war. That was what I was wondering about, so I appreciate your help.

I am looking for Silk, Simmons and McClinchey. I know Arthur Simmons and Albert McClinchey died in France in WWI.

I can get some of the names on the Cenotaph by searching here:

http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/search.php

but for some reason when I try to go to page two of the list for the Cenotaph it reverts to Shelburme cemetery listings.

Thanks

Isabel born sept 17 1892, Nellie, not sure of her birth date but died august 1896 and William my grandfather, born Dec 27 1895. The children were born in Canada or Michigan. Fred and Mary were very young in 1896.
18-19 or 19-20. They dissapeared from Niles Michigan after 1896 and were never seen or heard from again. May have had more children together or remarried and had more children we just don't know.
Thanks
Cindy

Hello,

Parsons Duane Henry was my great-great grandfather on my father’s side.

He was born in Adams Centre, New York (this according to the Death registration of his youngest son, John Wesley Whitfield Henry) on July 16, 1836. His father was Edward Henry and his mother was Chloe Thayer. There are a couple of paragraphs regarding Parsons in a book called “History of Dufferin County” page 144 that are worth checking out.

He married Margaret Campbell, I would say, around 1858. However, up until now, I have not been able to locate the exact marriage date. They had 5 children:

1) Frances – born June 17, 1859 – died January 11, 1923.
She married Edward McFadgen on October 9, 1889. They had two daughters:
Elizabeth Ann (my grandmother) born on October 4, 1891 – died ?
Caroline Pearl born December 3, 1894 – died May 17, 1929

2) Chloe Maria Elise – born 1861 – died May 28, 1875

3) Margaret Jane – born November 7, 1864 – died August 20, 1867

4) Asahel – born October 20, 1866 – died ? He married Mary Jane Gray on January 9, 1889. They had one daughter here in Ontario and then moved out to Saskatchewan where they had two sons and two more daughters.

5) Margaret Ann – born July 20, 1867 – died July 2, 1907. She married James Henry Wilkinson on December 10, 1888. They had two daughters and two sons.

Parsons’ wife Margaret died January 24, 1871 and on April 26, 1871 he married Caroline Ann Hamilton.

I have further information on the children from that marriage as well as more info on the children with Margaret Campbell. Please advise if you would like to have that. I see by your last name you must be related to Elizabeth Jane Henry who married Albert Edward Longhurst so I’m not sure whether you already have a lot of that information.

Hoping to hear from you.

Vicky Caruso
Thank you for information. I have the "East Garafraxa" book, but misplaced it when I was responding to Don. I would love to contact him, because I think he may be related to me.

Pictures #43,44,45 are included together as think they are of the same family. On the back of the family picture on the bottom and in tiny hand writing in fountain pen ink is written Mrs. Shaw.

Picture #43 - couple

Picture #44 - Family picture (man with beard appears to be the same man as in the couple picture but younger)

Picture #45 - two girls (These appear to be the same girls as in the family picture front row but with different clothes. The hair style of the girl sitting down is the same as in family picture but the other it is difficult to tell as her head is being held straight on to the camera in the family picture.

Picture #42 - unknown male, photographer - Milne's Medicine Hat, Alta.
I have included as feel he was originally from Orangeville, Ont as some of the Jenkins and Islands did move out west. I also have seen this individual in another picture I am sure.
