Thanks for the reply. I kinda figured that they were likely in either the group that left Scotland in 1785 coming up thru NY or on the ship McDonald in 1786.

Do you know if there is any other research out there on the Ardnabie's that came to Glengarry other than Duncan Darby's " The Ardnabie Branch of Clan Donald"? Duncan follows the Ardnabie line from Alex OG to John to John DHU but what I'm researching is the line from Alex OG to Ranald to Ranald. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find any sources of info other than obits from Father John's Diary.

Thanks,
Lara

I would think your John MacDonell and Janet MacDonald came in 1786 on the Ship MacDonald from Knoydart. The UEL were given lots along the river and later the ones from Knoydart were settled mostly in Lancaster and some in Charlottenburgh.

Almost all lots given in the 6th of Lancaster went to Knoydart people. For some reason Lot 32 and Lot 33 are missing from the list. Lot 34 had a Ranald MacDonald & Lot 35 John MacDonald.

Tal

Looking for info on Sara Runions born 1757, died 6/18/1814 in Cornwall, Ontario...She was married to Henry Fykes(UEL) born 1755 who enlisted in 2nd battle KRRNY and died during American Revolution. They had two children. She then married Christian Gallinger in 1/1784 at Christ Church, Montreal Quebec(military wedding). They had 9 children(wondering if Christian adopted Henry Fyke's kids? Her father was Henry Runions(UEL) born 1735. Who was her mother? Was she of French origin? I saw a Henry Runions who was married to a Hannah Barnahart(but I don't think the dates work)Thanks! I had just posted I wasn't sure where Elizabeth ended up and now due to this posting, I know. How funny.

Yes, would descend from John and Margaret. I would love to share info.
No, I don't have a copy of the letter, but I would be delighted to receive one. I was just looking at a map of the area around Inverie House. I see Seanachaidh directly east of there, bordered on the bottom by the Inverie River, on the west by a stream named Allt Seanachaidh and on the east by Allt Miol-airighe. Directly north of that area is an area labeled Coire Salach. That is the closest name to Salachary I can find. Because of the closeness of our families at the time of the emigration, I suspect that my ancestors came from the same area. I was looking at another site that listed some of the rents charged in 1802. An area listed as Salachary & Tacruin..'' had a rent of 55 6 o. I'm not sure what that means, but perhaps 55 pounds for the whole area?
I will give you my e-mail address and if you will write to me I will respond with my mailing address.
Thank you very much,

James

This John McDonald is my gggg grandfather. I suspect that he is from the Ardnabie line but I'm wondering if anyone has any further information to confirm the line and when he emigrated.

Lancaster 6 Lot 33 (land records have them there as early as 1787):
John McDonell (1764 - 1843)
wife - Janet McDonell (1764 - 1864)

Nov 17 1843 death: John McDonell, age 74, son of Ranald McDonell & Janet Fraser. (St-Raphs)

July 9 1864 death: Janet McDonell, age 101, in Lanc 6/33, widow of John McDonell son of Ranald of Ranald of Alex OG of Angus of John of Donald "A Lagain". (Fr John's Diary)

The chart on page 247 of Fr John's Diary shows this line with another Ranald "Ardnabi" also connecting into it. Up until the Ranalds it coincides with the published info on the Ardnabie's I've been able to find.

There are a number of John's (Lanc 6/33) descendants' obits which confirm the Ranald of Ranald entry.

I can't seem to find any other documentation that confirms that Alex OG had a son named Ranald. Duncan Darby's research doesn't follow this part of the line.

I would also like to try to confirm if John & Janet came over in 1785 or 1786 or if they were UELs. Although I have compiled a list of their children, I have no idea who his siblings were and whether they and/or their father Ranald emigrated with them.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Lara

Hello James,

Good to hear from you even if it is every seven years. The 1804 letter was written by Aeneas the brother of Father John at the request of Roderick's father who was called "John". I have him recorded as Angus Ian but then Ian is John. I also show us as 6th cousins. Did I send you a copy of the letter?

Tal

Tal,
As I read over this message from you 7 years after it was written, I find I have two questions. Where you talk about the letter, who was the author of the letter, Father John or his brother Aeneas? When you say he wrote the letter on behalf of Roderick's father John I am confused. I thought Roderick's father was Angus Ian III.
My genealogy program says you and I are 6th cousins.
James R. McDonald

Hi Evelyn:
The sources I have seen place 1) Allan John the Wheelwright(born 1830 died2-13-1913) as the son of John Archibald (born 1800 died 1871 married to Mary MacDonell) . Her father was John MacDonell of Arnabee.
2)John Archibald is the son of3) "Big Archibald" born 3-25-1772 in Knoydart, son of 4)Angus Ban of Munial Farms and Isabel macDonell. So this would make Allan the Wheelwright as the great great grandson of Angus Ban of Munial Farms.
Unfortunately I was unable to pull up your pdf file on Glengarry Gen Web. Angus Ban McDonald Of Munial is not on file any longer.
Do I have this all wrong??
I think I will just go pull out my hair now.
thanks,
Pat

Alexander Scott MacDonald who married Mary Hickey was born in the Alexandria area. His daughter Margaret Isabella known as Margaret or Maggie married Richard Dorion a culler for the Lumber Companies. Alexanders mother Ann married another McDonald in Alexandria area. She has half siblings as Margaret Scott married a 2nd time. She married Samuel McDonald and had 2 sons Duncan and James. Duncans birth certificate lists his name as a McDonnell who was born in Portage du Fort. Duncan married a Julia Ann Keyes and lived in Arnprior.
Samuels parents were a Donald McDonald/McDonnell who married a Sarah Kennedy. They lived in glengarry or Alexandria. Samuel had a brother named Duncan who had a son named Archibald who married a Catherine Mckinnon. I hope some of this is helpful.
carolbrine@hotmail.com

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't been able to access Scottish birth certificates for John Kennedy & Elizabeth McMillan's children but Father John's Diary, St-Raphael's records & Ontario census reports indicate that Mary, Ewan, Ann/Nancy & Janet were all born in Scotland. Since Ann/Nancy & Janet were born in the 1790s the family could not have emigrated in 1786 on the ship McDonald.

For example:
Feb 20 1866 (St. Raphs) death of Janet Kennedy wife of late John McDonald, Kenyon 1/13. She was 76
Feb 18 1866 (Father John Diary): Janet Kennedy, age 76, Kenyon 1/13. Daughter of John of John of Donald of John of Findlay.
Ontario Census 1851 (Kenyon 1 lot 13): shows John Mcdonald born in Scotland and Janet Kennedy also born in Scotland.

I have the same type of confirmation for their other daughter Ann/Nancy born around 1795, married Angus McDonald, resided in Kenyon 2/16. Census of 1851 shows Ann being born in Scotland.

Then finally we have the passenger list from the 1802 emigration from the Lachaber Emigrants to Glengarry. Passengers who boarded at Fort William lists:
John Kennedy (Inchlagen)
his wife
Ewan Kennedy
Mary Kennedy
Alex'r Kennedy
Janet Kennedy
Angus Kennedy & 3 children
Which matches with the ages John & Elizabeth's children would have been (ie. if the child was under 12 years old, no name was listed).

All this taken together would tend to indicate that this branch of the family came over in 1802. Land records might help us confirm the suppositions.

Cheers,
Lara
I'll post a pdf file on the Glengarry Genweb site. He is of the Scotus family as was the earlier Father Alexander Macdonell. As to writings of the Big Bishop, there is a file at the National Archives in Ottawa and as well I understand the majority of his papers and writing are at the Catholic diocese in Kingston. Also, the correspondence of politicians and notable Glengarrians, etc would contain letters from the Big Bishop. Is Alan, Alan John the Weelwright born 1829 Lot 11, Conc 8 & married to Mary McPhee? If so he is a descendant of Angus Ban of Munial and I cannot say that there is a direct relationship between the two families, but this may be because of the lack of maternal lines in many of the family histories.

Good luck,

Evelyn Goulet, Castle Tioram
Finlaggan Council
Clan Donald International,
Host, Glengarry Genweb

Evelyn:
I would be very pleased if any family connections of the Big Bishop could be identified. Is there a link to the family of Alan the Wheelwright? Also, would appreciate any directions to his writings. Thank you so much.
Pat
