Conlon and the other three were taken at A.W. Ferguson. I am trying to date the pictures. Does anyone know what years these studios were in business?

The picture taken at J.T. Conlon is of my 3 gg mother, Mary Mason (mother of George Woodward Mason and William Henry Mason).

The other pictures are either of George Woodward Mason and his wife, Jane Eliza Knapman or his brother, William Henry Mason and his wife, Margaret Morrow.

Thank you for your help.

Shannon Lehr

I've just purchased A Genealogical Reference list of names appearing in various Leed/Grenville OGS publications (= publication 01-3), and this publication indicates that the following 6 individuals, all with surname "Cain," are mentioned in publication 90-3, which is the cemetery transcriptions list for Halladay Cemetery (Elgin).

Cain: Arvalena 151
C. 1263
G. 153
Hattie H. 838
James 152
Martha M.1153

I believe that these individuals are, or are associated with, Cornelius Cain and his wife Martha Matilda Whalen, who resided in So. Crosby Twp.

Does anyone have publication 90-3 for Halladay Cemetery? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Michael

The William family settled in the area about the 1750s and some stayed on this land to farm it for about another two centuries. They came originally from Northern Ireland, and perhaps went first to Nova Scotia. In the late 1800s, several of the sons, including George Martin, of Hugh Martin and Margaret Kirkwood, moved to farm in northern and central California. I would be happy for any stories and/or photos to corroborate and amplify on my own records.

I'm looking for any info about Neddos in Leeds. Specifically, I'm looking for information about Alex Neddo (born approx. 1813 in Quebec), no marriage date, but it appears that he was not married in Quebec, wife Rosie Gonyeu (most likely Gagnon) living in Leeds and the head of a household according to the 1871 census, died 189? and buried at St. Barnaby's Catholic church. Specifically, I'm looking for the names of his parents.

Sheryl Curtis
Maloney Ancestry - Wolford Twp, Grenville Co, Ont

I am tracing my Maloney family genealogy and would sincerely appreciate any help any researchers might be able to provide.

Five Maloney brothers (George, Thomas, John, Richard and James
and two sisters (Mary Humphries, Ellen Burchall), all born in the late 1790s and
early 1800's, immigrated from Cork County, Ireland to the Wolford Township of
Grenville County, Ontario. Thomas was my great-great-great-great-grandfather.
As I understand it, the township was known as Corktown because of the many Cork
immigrants settled there.

I have successfully located my Maloney ancestors in Wolford Township in the
1840, 1848, 1851, 1861, 1871 etc. censuses for Ontario. Many settled nad lived
in Merrickville. However, I have not been able to find any other records, or any
records prior to 1840. Based on the ages and places of birth of family members
listed in the censes, it would appear that the family immigrated there some
time prior to 1835.

Is there any assistance or suggestions anyone might be able to provide me? From what I'm finding out, land books, cemetery records and possibly
parish records are the next type of records I need to look at, having apparently
exhausted the census resources.

I'm quite enjoying learning about my early Ontario ancestry and
hope you can assist me to find out more.
William Henry Parker was born 20 Feb 1884 and married Lillian Mae Clark of Napanee on 14 Mar 1903 and both of them moved to Toronto and died in Toronto. Do not know death dates but think the 1940's. His Father was William Parker born 22 Dec 1859 of Leeds, Gananoque and his Mother was Mary Ann Baker born 29 Oct 1865, of Ns. (Nova Scotia?). He had a Sister, May Parker and a Brother Edward Parker according to the 1901 census. Also, looking for info on the 8th Field Battery of Gananoque, Ont. during this time frame and any factories, mines, etc. where he may have worked as a tinsmith in same area. I am not sure what a tinsmith is.

Other Immigrants from Armagh to Kitley area abt. 1830?

Does anyone have ancestors who come from Armagh around 1830 to the Kitley area? If you know place more specifically, does anyone have Tynan or Cavanagarvan ties? Does anyone have people who came from Ireland, but might have only been there briefly after originating in Scotland? My family details are as follows:

Nancy Dazell/Dolzell/Deziel arrived in Ontario (Kitley, Leeds County) in approx.1831 with her husband Robert Mooney. Both were older, Nancy born about 1779 and Robert about 1776. They are reported as Irish and coming from Tynan, Armagh. (I suspect the townland might be Cavanagarvan.) They are Presbyterian. Arriving with them are their children, all reported as being born in Irelend except #1 son who consistently shows as being born in Scotland. I don't think this is in error because Henry reports being born in Scotland through every census, and his siblings report "Ireland". Robert Mooney and wife Nancy's hildren and approx. birthyears are follows:

1. Henry 1804
2. Nancy Mooney WALLACE 1806 traveling with husband James WALLACE (a Scot?) and their baby daughter Anne born about 1827 in Ireland
3. William 1811
4. John 1816
5. Jane 1819
6. Robert 1822
7. Margaret 1828.

I think the immigration group also contains people with surnames BELL and McClure.

They buy land in 1832 and live in Leeds County not far from a Robert DOLZELL (born about 1789 in Ireland) and his wife Margaret (?). I suspect that Robert is a brother or cousin of Nancy DOLZELL.

In 1846 Thomas DOLZELL (born about 1778) arrives in NY in the ship Silas Holmes from Liverpool with a stated intention of staying in the US, but by 1851, Thomas, a weaver by trade, is in Kitley staying with his niece ( I think) Jane WALLACE BLAKELY.

Any connections to or information about these people would be appreciated. I am trying to put together some other names since I suspect they came as a group---Mooney, Wallace, Dalzell, McCrum, McClure, Bell etc.

I hope to be in Belfast in the spring doing research and want to do as much "at home" stuff as I can.

Thanks in advance for any help, hints, family ties, etc.
War of 1812 - Leeds and Grenville Militia Regiments

Does anyone happen to know whether the 2nd Regiment of Grenville Militia or the 1st Regiment of Leeds Militia was in combat during the War of 1812?

Unfortunately, William Gray's book "Soldiers of the King: The Upper Canadian Militia, 1812-1815" does not specify which militia regiments saw action. Does anyone have an idea where to find this info?

Thanks!

I'm stuck after Ezekiel Bonney since I followed a member's lineage citing Bishop as Ezekiel's father. How did the name change occur- is there an actual source citing for that? I've seen another cite that shows a Bonney and also has several generations beyond-haven't gone that far because first I want to establish which is correct? Since the wife, Hannah Bryant, 1712, is the same but you showed Bishop, I'm hoping you have the answer! New to this but excited! Thanks for any info!

I am trying to find the identity of Rebecca Clark(e) who m. William E. Cornell at the Presbyterian Church at Brockville, Elizabethtown Twp. 5 Jan 1823. The witnesses were his brother, Seth S Cornell and Abraham Baker. I believe that these people were my 4th great grandparents but I have not been able to confirm this. I believe that William was son of George Cornell and Sarah Dickson Cornell of Kitley, Leeds, Ontario. If anyone out there has information on Rebecca Clark or the Cornells either, please contact me.

Hello everyone,
Now that the snow has started to swirl outside, summer seems a distant memory so time for family search again!
I have not yet connected my Irish Cookes of Elizabethtown and later Lansdowne and Augusta with the family of WIlliam Cook and Rachel Shaver of Matilda Tp Dundas but Uncle Bob McGinn (1875-1973) did the connecting for me, at least in an anecdotal sense.

So William and Rachel's first known child, Mary Ann Cook possibly married William Gordon Shaver about 1856. They were born 1834 and 1833 in SDG.
William G and Mary Ann Shaver moved to Brockville where he was a carpenter. They are there with family in the 1881 LDS transcription.
Shaver Children that I know:
Philander Herbert, Frank, Sanford, Emma A, Charlotte May, Barney WIlliam, Charles Sydney, James.
Barney and Charles S. were in Thunder Bay early 1900s
That is pretty much all I know about them and I am looking for proof of parentage for both William Gordon Shaver and Mary Ann Cook.
A marriage date would be a blessing and I have looked in my Johnstown Marriages and the Eastern District Marriages transcriptions with no luck.
Thanks all!
Rob McGinn

Hi,

I'm looking for information on James Dolan (born 1825/26) and Ellen Leonard (1832/33). They immigrated from Ireland. All I know at this point is this:

They were in Grenville County -
Kemptville in 1861
Oxford-on-Rideau in 1871, 1891, 1901.

I'm not sure where the family was before 1861 or at the time of the 1881 census. In the 1891 census, Ellen was listed as a widow living with the three youngest children. In 1901, she is listed as living will the youngest son.

Their children were Mary (b 1852/53), Thomas (1854/55), John (1856/57), Ellen (1858/59), Catherine (1861 - my great grandmother), Margaret (1863/64), Elizabeth (1869/70), and James (1871).

According to the census, all children were born in Ontario.

I'm basing the birth years on 1871 census data.

Catherine married Hugh Hayes in 1899/1900 in Burlington, Vt.
They had one child, James, born 9/1900. They moved to Duluth, MN in 1914. Catherine died in 1921 in Duluth. She was buried in Burlington.

If there are any leads out there, I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Tom
I'm seeking information concerning the forebears of my great-great grandparents John McFadden and Hannah Snider. John McFadden was born in Ireland about 1800; Hannah Snider was born in Upper Canada about 1810; her parents were of German descent, and born in the U.S. They are said to have been loyalists who came to Upper Canada after the American Revolution, and settled in the area south of Ottawa. I'm aware of a Stringer McFadden who came to Canada aboard the ship "Alexander" in 1817. I have a copy of his will, which lists his eleven children, including his oldest son John, and I suspect, but cannot document, that "my" John McFadden might be the eldest son of Stringer. Stringer McFadden and his wife Sarah (Saragh) are buried in the South Gower Cemetery, just south of Kemptville.

Can anyone help me with "leads" on how to find more information on the McFadden and Snider families?

ferrier - death or cemetry records

I would appreciate any assistance anyone might have in locating a Georgianna or Georgina Ferrier (m.s. McKenzie). Although I'm not certain, I think she may be my great great grandmother. I have been unable to trace her since the 1851 Scotland Census but other documentary evidence suggests that she was still living up to 1874 at least. There is no record of her death in Great Britain from 1855 onwards.
I have a copy of the 1871 Canada census for Grenville South (Augusta) which lists Georgianna Ferrier widow, born c 1807 (age 64) head of household, ethnic origin Scottish, occupation grocer. The approx year of birth is in acordance with my other information. I have tried to find cemetery records but with no success.
Of course it is possible that she may have moved from this area of Canada although given her age, perhaps unlikely.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Dave Robertson
He died in 1863. Amy died before that. At least some of thier children were Charles Burnham b.1819 d.1896, William W. Burnham b.1832 d.1921 married to Sarah Armstrong., Burrel Burnham b.1838 d.1914 married to Emily Pennock. Nancy b. @1836 may have married a Turkington. Sally Burnham died in 1850, married to Solomon Turkington. In 1861 Burrel is living with a Lydia Burnham possible a 2nd wife. I am interested in who Burrel's parents were and where in the US he may have come from and his wife's maiden name..

My great-great grandfather, James White, was born in Surrey, England in 1800, and came with his wife and children to the Kemptville area in 1832. About 1846, the family moved to the Beachburg area in Westmeath, where descendants still live.

I have just learned, from a Peterborough area history book published in 1884, that my great-great grandfather James White was in a militia group involved in defending against the Mackenzie Rebellion, and that he fought at the Battle of the Windmill (near Prescott, in November, 1838). I don't know the name of the militia group of which he was a member, and am looking for help in finding the name of the group, and hopefully, a listing of the names of the members of that militia group.

Can anyone please help me?

Thank you in advance,

Arnold White

Mary Anne McCrady (born 1835 died abt 1875) married James Ardiff abt 1862. Their first child, Minerva, was born in Canada in 1863. I presume that after Mary died in Potsdam, New York, two of their three children were sent up to Elizabethtown and were living with John McCrady b. 1826 (not John W.)in 1881. Adelaid Ardiff gave her mother's name as Mary Anne McCrady on her marriage certificate. My question is where does she fit in the McCrady families. Her first son was named David John.

The favor: would you see if you have either a "Johannah Gorman[possibly Johannah Rock], died 1896" or a "Joseph Smith, died 1908" in that cemetery? I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

Michael

I have just seen an entry in the Montreal Emmigrant Society Passage Book for 1832 showing Charles Thorn, his wife and 2 children under 7 yrs. Ticket No:1313. They were sent to Prescott Ontario.

I know that my Charles Thorne was a brewer, and I learned there were breweries in Prescott. Does anyone here come from Prescott or know who to ask about c1830's arrivals in Prescott. In abt 1835 Charles and his wife Susan had another child, James, so if anyone knows how or where to look up his birth please let me know.

James returned to the UK before 1859, when he took a ship to New Zealand, and the rest is known to us.

Thank you kindly in advance,
Julian Lovegrove
In April 1858 Richard WILLING was convicted of having set fire to Ormond Jones' mills in Yonge Mills in the previous November. According to the Brockville Recorder, a Mr. Purvis was to have taken the Willing family to Prescott (after the fire was set). I have some information from the newspaper but wonder if there might be other local sources.
Richard Willing died of typhoid in June 1865 in the Provincial Penetentiary in Kingston. I haven't been able to locate his family for the period 1858-1865. Thank you.

I found an Eben Sherwood born in Connecticut in 1770 whose parents are Jotham and Naomi. I don't think this is our guy, however.
I did read some histories. One said that 2 Sherwood brothers came from England and settled in America in the 1600s. Another said that 4 Sherwood brothers came into the US in the late 1700s. One went east, one went west, one went north and one went south. The one that went south went to Virginia and then Indiana. (He is not our man.) The one that went north settled in Connecticut. I do not know where the other two went. It seems like they came to America, seeking religious freedom. That is what my great aunt wrote in her family history of the Sherwoods. I have been reluctant to believe what she wrote, since her father was a baby when his father, David Scott Sherwood died. But maybe there is some truth to it. I wish I could find more about the brothers as one might be our man!

hello...

On a death registration I found there is a reference to 'home industry' in Escott, Rear of Yonge. It states that this individual was an 'inmate of Home Industry' at the time of his death in 1899.

Can anyone tell me what 'Home Industry' refers to?

Thanks!
Tricia

Does anyone have any information about the William B. Coon
found in the 1851 census for Leeds Grenville? I am trying to determine if this is our Coon line from Beekmantown, NY. Also, can anyone tell me what, if any, additional information is available if I can see the actual census record, rather than just the index that is on the Ontario website and how I might be able to view it? I am in California and we haven't been able to get the film.

John Griffin (1789) - Finding ancestors

John Griffin was born around 1789 in the U.S. By 1840 he is settled in Leeds & Lansdowne (Gananoque Lake area and property out near Long Point). He marries Lucy French and has at least three children that I can identify. One son John Griffin (1835) marries Mariah Perry and is the primary ancestor for most of the Griffin's in the Leeds and Lansdowne Townships today.

My problem is that I cannot trace ancestory beyond John and Lucy. There likely is a conection to the Joseph Griffin UEL(1760)settled in Elizabethtown Twsp in 1784. But I cannot confirm this.

I would appreciate any assistance regarding either John or Joseph.

thanks

I am researching the WILLIX line, namely George who was born in Canada and I believe in Leeds Co. about 1820. Sometime before 1850 he moved to Jefferson Co, NY where his son, also named George was born in 1852 and married Matilda GRIFFIN abt 1874 (She was the daughter of Isaac and Cynthia GRIFFIN of Crosby, Canada). I found a Jeremiah George WILLIX who married Nancy COLE in 1819 in Brockville, Elizabethtown, Upper Canada. I am guessing that this Jeremiah WILLIX may be the father of the elder George mentioned above. Does any of this look familiar to anyone?

Thanks,
Ruthanne

He was from the forfar area according to the information I have.
