Missing Birth, Marriage and Death

Robert Henry Ervin b. Dec. 4, 1895 in Campbellville, Halton Co., according to his Military Attestation Paper for the 164th Battalion. He lists his next of kin as his Uncle Henry Fetter, who was his maternal aunt's(Minnie Catherine Hilson)husband.

In his marriage record to Ada Bullard he lists his parents as Robert Ervin and Mary Ann Hilson (1874 - 1916) but I can not find a marriage for his parents nor a birth/death for his father. I am searching for his birth record.

His mother Mary Ann's death record in 1916 lists her as "single" and she is listed under her maiden name of Hilson. Her brother reported her death.

I am wondering if perhaps Robert Henry Ervin's parents never married...any help would be appreciated with ideas or actual records.

Samuel(born 1815 England, died 1884 Halton County) and Elizabeth (born about 1813 England, died Abt 1901 I believe in Perth county) were both born in England and settled in first, Nelson Twp, then Nassagaweya Twp.

Here I am posting a quick reference to this family.

I first have located this family on the 1851 census records in Nelson Twp. They are listed with the following children:

First name hard to read....possibly Mary born 1837 England
Samuel born 1839 England
Henry born 1841 Ontario married Levina Gollick
Elizabeth born 1843 Ontario married Henry Delong
Susan born Ontario
Agnes born 1847 Ontario married William Brenner
William born Ontario
Thomas born 1850 Ontario married Angelia Griffin

Later through the years I have found they had 2 more children:

Robert born 1852 Ontario married Mary Ann Chisholm
Lily born 1853 Ontario married John McLaren

I am hoping to link with anyone that is related through these family lines, hoping to find Samuel and Elizabeth's parentage, and anything that will help me fill in the many blanks on my family tree.

Does anyone know this family?

Hardy, Douglas

My Great Great Grandfather Andrew Hardy married Janet Christina Douglas(s) in Esquesing Twp. in 1821. The minister at this time who travelled around, there was no church was The Rev. Abner Wright. He was there in the summer of 1821 but I don't know if he married Andrew and Janet because apparently they were married on the 26th of Nov. Does anyone have any idea how I can find the records of this.

I am also looking for information on their children. Margaret Janet Isabella married Christopher Preston and I have some of their information, Annie Hardy married either John McKinley or William McDonald depending on what records I look at. Jessie married John Waltes and her son married Maude Harding. George never married and John married Barbara Watkins and when she died he married Jessie Laurenson. He was my great grandfather. Janet/Jane married Robert Kennedy.

Any information on these people would be very welcome

My great great grandmother was born in Nassagaweya Canada in 1847 according to obituary. Her death certificate lists her parents as David Fraser and Catherine McBean both born in Scotland. I have been unable to link any David Fraser living in this area to Alexena. I am wondering if anyone would have any idea on how I could go about finding her birth or some other record that would connect her to her parents. Her Obituary says she came to Ottawa, Illinois USA in 1865 and she married in 1869 to Charles Bowers in Ottawa, Illinois.

John C. Harris, d. 1841 Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co., Ontario

I am looking for information on John C. HARRIS of Trafalgar Twp. Halton Co. Ontario. John died 20 April 1841 at Trafalgar Twp. Oral family history states this family is Pennsylvania Dutch from Harrisburg, PA and Rebecca may have been a VAN HORNE. It appears John and Rebecca were not born in Canada. John may have been born as early as 1768 or prior. Land records indicate the family may have been in Grimsby, Ontario in the 1790's when petitioning for land. Indexes reveal a land grant dated 1806 for Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co. John has a relationship with a Thomas HARRIS of Grimsby. Not determined if this is a father or brother at this point. Some of this family may have migrated to the U.S.

His family is as follows:

Wife Rebecca still living in 1841

Children:

John Edward Harris, b. c. 1804 m. Ellen/Eleanor COYNE
Samuel Harris, b. c. 1807 m. Sophia C.
Levi Harris
Dorothy Harris
Eleanor Harris
Lydia Harris 1800-1877 m. Abraham FISH moved to Essex Co.
Anna Harris may have married John BROWN
Mehettable Harris 1811-1833 m. Oliver FISH
Margaret Harris

A Francis CUSHMAN witnessed John C. Harris' will and may be connected by marriage.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Debra R. Mann

I am researching the families of my ggggrandparents, John and Rosenah (Rosina) Gillelan(d) from Trafalgar Twp. Rosenah's maiden name was Snyder/Snider and because her first born was Jacob Snyder Gillelan, I believe he was named after her father. Would anyone have any information on this line of Snyders??

Augustus Bates

In 2003 a Bert Semmelink left a message on the CAN-ONT-HALTON board requesting information about Augustus Bates. I was unable to contact the gentleman through the e-mail address given on the board. Here is what I tried to send to him.

I saw your request for information on Augustus Bates, and I
think I have some data that will interest you.

I only just discovered Augustus yesterday. He is mentioned in the first Canadian international bestseller which was written in 1817 by Walter Bates, the brother of Augustus. The book is titled "Henry More Smith: The Mysterious Stranger". Augustus is mentioned in chapter ten. Don't let the publication date of the book scare you, it can be ordered in reprint form online or found in a good provincial archives collection (if you are within Canada).

I have been quite familiar with Augustus's brother, Walter Bates, the last seven years as I researched by own family history. My multiple-great aunt Abigail Lyon married Walter Bates. I only learned of his brother Augustus as I read over "The Mysterious Stranger". Immediately I went to the internet to see what could be found on Augustus.

Augustus and his brother Walter were both born in Stamford, Connecticut -- a town that was deeply divided by the American Revolution. The older Bates brothers were loyalists. Walter was tortured by patriots at one point to divulge where his brothers were, but he did not "rat" on them. Later, Walter
fled to the loyalist refugee camp at Fort Franklin near Huntington,Long Island, New York. One of the Bates brothers died of smallpox and is buried in the later community. Walter was a school teacher for the loyalist children in the refugee camp; he also participated in loyalist raids on Connecticut. He eventually came to modern day New Brunswick on the first ship to bring loyalists to the province. He was one of the founders of Kingston, New Brunswick, was very involved in his church, and became the sheriff for Kings County. I visited his grave back in July.

Here's what I've learned about Augustus in my search on the internet:

In 1815 he was postmaster at Wellington Square, at "the head of Lake Ontario". This seems to have become the commmunity of Burlington, Ontario. Two newspaper articles were written about him:

Augustus Bates was first postmaster, Spectator, 14 Sep 2001 section N , page 4
Augustus noted as Canadian pioneer, Spectator, 4 Oct 1986 section T , page 4

Augustus married a woman with the last name of Blauw. There is a letter in the loyalist collection at the University of New Brunswick from a Rachel Dunlop (neé Blauw), whose sister married Augustus.

UNB's loyalist collection website has microfilm of Bates family papers. It says: "The papers are mainly those of businessman and post master Augustus Bates (1764- ), concerning commerce, the post office, and family matters." This might be a VERY helpful site.

Augustus was for a time a clerk in the store of his cousin, Ebenezer Dibble(e) in Pine Plains, New York. It is hard to determine if he came to Ontario with the loyalists in 1783 or in a later year.

Contact me to get the URLs with information on Augustus Bates.

One of these sites gives Augustus's birth date as "29 June 1764".

I hope this is helpful. If you would like to read more about Stamford, Connecticut and Walter Bates, they are among the stories of over 100 loyalist refugees to be found in my e-book, "The Burdens of Loyalty:Refugee Tales from the First American Civil War." You can find out more about it by contacting me.

Stephen Davidson

In the Annals of the Forty, volume 8, the Michael Snider family of Halton Co. was listed. It was contributed by Mrs. A. H. Biggar, a Snider descendant, of Oakville. This volume was published in 1957. Can anyone tell me how these two families were related in the 1800's? Does anyone know any descendants of Mrs. Biggar I might contact for more information? Thanks. Janice

They settled in Ontario and many remained in the area over the decades.

I have been given information that there are probably some still in the area of Burlington in Halton Co. My information is not up to date, though, and I am hoping someone sees this that might know them.

Among the names are four brothers most likely born after 1900, Harold, James, David, and Blake.

There must be many more, as one of David Springer's descendents, David Warren Springer b.1836 had about 8 sons.

Benjamin Freeman/Jane Burriss (Georgetown, Ontario 1840)

I am seeking information on the following individuals. Benjamin Freeman (b. 1814 in Amherst, Nova Scotia) married Jane Burriss (Burris?) (b. 1823 in Ireland) about 1840 in Halton. They had 14 children. I am descended from their daughter Angeline (Annie) Freeman (b. 1845 in Georgetown) who married William Adams (b. 1843 in Chinguacousy Township, Peel). I am particularly interested in Jane and her father Michael Burriss (b. 1806 in Ireland) who also emigrated to Canada as this is as much information as I have on them. The 1881 Census (incorrectly I believe) lists Jane's father's name as Michael Burrows.

I know about Alexander from 1893 onward, but from 1885 to 1893 I have nothing.
I have not been able to find any information about Charles Hamilton Carr since arriving in Canada. If anyone has any connection or information please write. Thanks.

Looking for information on Ann Jane Radcliffe, born 1830 in County Down, Ireland and came to Ontario prior to 1851. She and her half-brother, John Radcliffe, are listed in the 1851 Ontario Census as living in the farm of Hugh McLaurin/McLauren, age 18. The rest of her half-brothers and full brother, Thomas David Radcliffe, moved on to the Granton, Ontario area where they had a cousin, Samuel Radcliffe. Did Ann Jane marry in the Halton County and stay in this region or did she die young.

Any help would be appreciated.
Searching for possible Carr relatives. My great grandfather was Alexander Carr m. Annabell Montgomery of Mono, Ontario, in Hillsburgh, Ont. 12/25/1893.
Alexander had 4 brothers and one sister - John Henry, Charles Hamilton, William Francis, Samuel Adolphus and Margaret Jane.
Their parents were Henry Carr and Roseanna Quinn. All the children were born in Co. Galway, Ireland.
Somehow, my great grandmother knew Alexander since he was a young boy.
I show a John Carr on the 1891 Census for Acton, Tannery Miller. Perhaps this might be a brother to Alexander.
Any connection would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I am trying to find more information on the Maw side of my ancestors. I can not find in the 1880 census Albert Edward Maw. He was a son of MArk Maw and Sarah Gamble. He moved from Hickory Hollow (now Georgetown) to Madison Wisconsin before the 1880 census and I can not locate him in either the US or Canada. Also I am tying to get more infomration on Sarah Gamble's parents...William Gamble and Sarah (adams ?) I know most of Sarah's (Gamble/Maw) siblings but I know nothing about her mother except that it is possible that she was 20 years younger than William. They are of Irish decent. I also want to know more about Mark Maw and Sarah Gamble's kids...and Grandkids. If you know something please pass it on to me...much appreciated..

Also the dates are 1860 for Albert Edwards Birth. Hopefully that gives some help.

barbara

I am trying to locate ancestors/collateral relatives of my great-great-grandfather. I know very little about him:

He was born in the early 1850's in Oakville and married Maria Cecelia Falvey (born in the late 1850's in Moira, Franklin Co., New York). Both sets of their parents were born in Ireland according to certain census records. They moved to Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., Iowa, where all six of their children were born.

Edward
Anna
Frank
Mary Ellen (aka Noe and Nellie), who married Charles M. "Chas" Hubbard
Clara M. (b. Aug 31, 1886 in Iowa and died April 17, 1947 in Chicago)
Charlotte (my great-grandmother), who married Aage Edward Rodskiaer, Sr. April 16, 1913 at St. Patrick's Church in Cedar Rapids. He was born December 23/24 in Vejle, Denmark and went missing when my grandfather was small. His last known destination was South America. She married Raymond Wood, residing with him in Lansing, Michigan. Charlotte died in March of 1972 somewhere outside of Chicago.

The census records show Maria to be dead prior to the 1920 census, and John is gone from the 1930 one. I was told today that J.J. lived with my great-grandmother and her children for a while. His and Maria's birth and death dates (and death locations) are unknown.

Horace Thomas Ebbage family

Hi. I'm looking for information regarding the Horace Thomas Ebbage family from Acton. Here is what I already know ..

Horace Thomas Ebbage was born May 18, 1838 in Quebec, the son of Captain Thomas Ebbage. In 1844 they moved to Acton.

In 1859, he married Ann Overton, daughter of William Overton who was a blacksmith in Acton. She and Thomas had twelve sons and daughters, nine of whom survived ... the names I have are as follows: Mariah, Mary Margaret, Horace Henry, William Henry, Robert, Charles Butler, Ernest, Clara, Charlotte, Frederick (that leaves two for whom I have no names).

Of these children, most emmigrated to the US in the early 1900s - Robert, Charlotte, and Mary Margaret to New York; Horace Henry to Michigan; Ernest and William Henry to Montana, then Ernest to Seattle.

My family connection is from Mary Margaret and Charlotte who both married into the Ripton family in New York from which I am descended.

I am looking for any additional information regarding this family, particularly any information that goes backwards to Captain Ebbage and beyond. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any information!

Thank you in advance!

Marianne Spencer
Indianapolis, Indiana

Jane Stinson born Mar. 6, 1836 in Co. Fermanagh, Ireland married James Mitchell in 1863 in Georgetown. James was born abt. 1830 to Peter and Flora Mitchell.

The children of James & Jane Mitchel were: Frederick George Mitchell, James Brown Mitchell and William Mitchell.

I would be very interested to find any one else who would be researching Mitchell from this area; particularly James Mitchell.

Maureen Williams
