Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario

Having noticed a number of postings mentioning the
surname of SCRATCH, I find it interesting that any
family researcher would not try to find the original
progenitor of the Scratch name, who was Leonhard KRATZ
(this being a direct translation from the German name to
its English meaning). He was a Hessian Soldier with the
Hanau Regiment Erbprinz who was captured at Saratoga
in October of 1777 as part of the Burgoyne army. I have
written his history from date of birth to his death and
final resting place at the shores of Lake Erie at Kingsville.
Any of his descendants may write to me direct for
additional information. I also have a long list of proud
descendants living all over North-America, who have
corresponded with me during the last 15 years.
John Merz, rsearching Hessian soldiers of the AmRev.

Archibald (1822) is possibly married to Sarah Murray and came to Canada in 1854. He appears to be living in South Colchester TWP in 1883 along with either sons or brothers Alexander, Robert, and John. His sister Elizabeth died in South Colchester July 17, 1857. She was married to John Murray. Are their any descendents out there? Archibald the father was my ggg-grandfather David Affleck's brother. Thanks-Jeff

Nancy McCormick, grand daughter of Alexander McCormick and possibly daughter of Polly Lidwell &another Alexander McCormick, married Walter Grubb approx 1845. They lived in Colchester South in Essex County. Their children were John b. 1848, Mary, b. 1852, Charles & Susan b. 1857, Lavenia (?) b. 1862, Edward b.1864, William b.1850. There were more children but these are the ones that appear on the 1871 census

My great grandfather was their son John A, who married Clarissa Lockwood in 1870.

I would like to connect with the McCormick and Grubb descendants to share family information.

Judy I am a little confused. You say that Joseph Quick was married to Susanna Munger. My relatives were Leonard Krtaz and Susanna Munger. There was more than one Susanna Munger from my understanding. Any information you would like on the Ilers who settled in S. Colchester I probably have. Please let me know what information you would like. Johan Leonard Kratz married Mary Munger. They had Susannah scratch who married John Wendel Wigle. They had Susannah Wigle who married John Iler. They had Susan Iler and she married Charles Bassett. They had Fay and she married Robert Heaton. They had Harry Bassett who is my grandfather. I have all of the dates and children's names and everything so let me know what else you would like to know.

Again I m a little confused on how they are related but maybe it has just been a long day. I have no record of a Susannah Munger. Maybe it is a distant relative or something. All of my research show that Leonard Kratz married Mary Munger. She had three sisters and five brothers. No one name Susannah Munger though. Keep me posted.
Sincerely
Rebecca

Grubb Pioneers of Etobicoke(book)
In researching my Grubb ancestors, a new"cousin" sent me about 50 pages of what looks like part of a book. It is Titled "The Grubb Pioneers of Etobicoke" by Janet Grubbe FitzGerald. My great great grandfather, Walter Grubb, ( 1819-1885) ,married Nancy McCormick. Their son John Al;exander is my great grandfather. These pages are a wonderful history of the Grubb family, starting with William in Scotland and then his son John Grubb, with his wife Janet Bain, who brought their children to Canada.. Their son Walter Grubb and his family lived in Essex County in Cochester South on their farm. If this material has been published as a book, I'd like to buy it. I'll also share the info with other researchers.

Stephen Cornwall

I am seeking info on the antecedents of Stephen Cornwall, circa 1805-1870. He married Harriet Edwards, 1831 in Camden Township, then seems to have taken up farming in Michigan, mostly China East Township, St.Clair Co., before returning to Sombra in 1855.I believe his children to be Louisa Mary m. Aaron Kerby, Lucy m. Joseph Stover, Nelson m. Margaret Cattanach and possibly Eliza m. Aaron Curley and John ( a ship captain in Michigan) m. Yokom. In 1861 he married Mary Wiley, although an inter -net transcription found for the census of that year indicates him as being a widower (twice?).
I believe him to be related to John Cornwall's familyof Essex Co., UEL, possibly through a son Joshua or a brother Francis.I note that Francis' son, Nicholas, had a son Francis S. Could the initial "S." stand for "Stephen"? All this is pure conjecture.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Mike Carr

Richard Cornwall, S-W Ontario

Seeking info on Richard Cornwall, Master Ship Builder on the Great Lakes, serving at Detroit with the British forces during the American Revolution. His name appears in documents dealing with land acquisitions and sales on the St.Clair River from the local Indians, on land claims from the Crown as a military claimant, and as to possessing lands near Harrow and Colchester in the "new settlement". He was still applying for land as late as 1798 in Essex County.
He may be related to John Cornwall, UEL, who was in the area and held land close-by, but I have not found conclusive proof of this. Richard mentioned in a letter that his family was from New York State, but a reading from the available census for Essex County only reveals names of John's offspring( from Connecticut ) and the name does not appear among John's relatives in the Thames Valley area. I doubt he could have returned to the States after the war, so what became of his family?
Any leads appreciated.
Thanks you,
Mike Carr

I have a copy of the public schools of Colchester South and in it are 2 pictures of the scool at Oxley. In 1890, Addy or Adaline was in school with Philip Ferris, Oscar Lonsbery, Sarah Coatsworth, Freeman and Witson Baldwin among others. In 1895, Bell McManemy was in school with her brother Allen McManemy and Wilson, Mary and Lewis Brush, Pearl, John and Della Cornwall among others. I am hoping that some of the descendants of these students mentioned may have information on my McManemy family. Did any of your ancestors go to that school at that time? Please contact by e-mail or this site. Thank you. bclark@theriver.com

Phillip Huckleberry (born before 1778) and wife Sarah Anne Quick (married June 13, 1800 in Amherstburg, Essex Co., Ont). Their son Jacob Huckleberry (born August 12, 1798 in Harrow) and wife Susanna Boyle (born before 1810 in Colchester, Essex Co., ONT to John Boyle and Rosanne McLean). Jacob's only known sib is Ann. These people lived in Harow, Essex Co., ONT before moving to Michigan prior to 1854.
The main street of Harrow, Essex Co., ONT is named Huckleberry and it's probable that Phillip Huckleberry was one of the Early Settlers. Two known children are Jacob and Ann (are there any more children?). There is a record in Essex Co., for the baptisim of one of Ann's children. What was Ann Huckleberry's married name? Did she have any other children?
What was Phillip's occupation? Did he have brothers or sisters living there? Who were his parents? What was the importance of the Huckleberrys to name a street for them? Are there any Huckleberrys, Boyles, and Quicks buried in the cemeterys of Harrow that may be related to the above mentioned.

To one and all:

I am presently working on a family tree book for my granddaughter for Christmas. Would like to include all relatives. These relatives stem, from the Wigle, Malott, Fox, Mifflin, Miller, Derbyshire, Quick and Ruthven families. The chapters will be in the form of genealogy reports from the furtherest ancestor on each line. I will also have a chapter that will be a kinship report. There will also be pictures included. Please send me your updated files, to be included in this book. I will make available copies to libraries and to anyone who is interested, probably at a nominal fee to cover the cost of printing.

Mary Quick

Quick/Atkins Family History
I am researching my family history as a millennium gift to my "Quick" Family Members here in Alberta and British Columbia.

The only information that I have on my gg grandfather is that his name was either John or David Quick, married to an Eva or Ava Atkins and they were from Harrow, Ont. G. grandfather was Forrest Quick(b.Dec.29,1877 in Harrow?)married to Prunella Froning(b.June 17, 1884, Harrow?)

Can anyone help me? No family history was ever written down and no members are left that recall pre Alberta history. Any assistance that anyone could give in my geneological research would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
Harrow baritone sang at the Met
OBITUARY

Victor Braun, this area's connection to the world of international opera, died in Europe on Saturday. He was 65. Mr. Braun, a baritone, was raised in the Harrow area and went onto sing with leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan in New York.

He and his son Russell, also a noted baritone returned to Windsor to perform a duet for the Windsor Symphony's 50th anniversary in 1997.

Mr. Braun died at his home in Belgium of a neurological disorder, said his cousin Mary Robinson of Wheatley.

He retired in August after singing in Austria because he did not want to collapse on stage," she said.

His family were Mennonites and had a fruit stand near Harrow after the Second World War, but his father also led the choir at Harrow United, a big church with an organ.

Music studies took him away in the 1950's. When he was 29 he won the Mozart competition in Vienna, which lead to a European career.

That life required constant traveling and he was often away from his son Russell. Their appearance in Windsor was their first in together in Canada. Russell, 35, is based in Toronto.

While singing the standard repetoire in Europe, Victor Braun had also appeared in some adventurous new works the 1990's, including the Canadian Opera's much-noticed Bluebeard's Castle for the Quebec innovator Robert Lepage.

He was married twice with 5 children in all. Several cousins live in Essex County, Mary Robinson said.
