Seeking descendants of "Auld" Robert Johnston, b. 1767, possibly in Scotland. He went to Ireland and married an Irish born woman, perhaps several, one of which may have been Hannah Shields. His children included:

James, b. 1798
Margaret, b. ca. 1800
Alexander, b. 1804
John, b. ca. 1806
Robert "Red Robin", b. 1808
David, b. 1814
Archibald, b. ca. 1815-16

James is buried in Zion Cemetary, Ashfield Twp., Huron Co.. He was married to Martha McCoy in Ireland. They had 9 children, one of whom was Archibald, b. 1837, m. Hannah McKay.

"Auld" Robert is buried in Ebenezer Cemetary just outside of Brampton, Ontario. He died on December 1, 1849.

Robert "Red Robin" Johnston was my gggrandfather. He and his brother Archibald bought adjacent farms in 1845 in N. Plantagenet Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario.

Good afternoon Listers & a Happy New Year. I hope 2009 is a productive year for you.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but I hope someone is able to help. I am trying to trace any living descendants of the above named couples who emigrated to Canada c1842 from Dundee, Angus, Scotland. They settled in the Goderich & Colbourne area of Huron County. They were married in Dundee and had several children before emigrating where they had more children.

My Greatx2 Grandfather Hay OWER was their youngest brother and he emigrated to Australia in 1852. We are planning a reunion this year and it would be great to have some of the Canadian cousins there if possible.

Clinton Public Cemetery lookup, please

I understand that three relatives are buried in the Clinton Public Cemetery. I have traced them as far as Blyth in 1879, but know nothing of when and where they died.

They are: W.H.G. COLLES, Thomas F.W. COLLES and Jane Phepoe COLLES. they are buried in Section E.

Apparently they are shown as COLES.

Hi all,

After an a long search for missing Powers/Tobin/Meighan cousins in Huron/Perth Counties. I have finally come up with a strong possibility.

I have located a death record for William James Powers, Age 5 months, 12 Days, born in Grey Twp, Died August 30th 1873 in Brussel's. (Farmers Son,witnessed by James Peters MD or Brussels). Religion is listed as Wesleyan Methodist, however my Powers are Roman Catholic.

Does any kind soul have easy access to the 1861 or 1871 census for Grey Twp? Or any church/cemetary records for Brussels. Frankly I have had a terrible time with the indexs for this surname.

Or maybe you can guide me to the correct church for the area at this time.

I am looking for information On William John Gower b:1838 possibly born in England, He married Mary Ann Bestard and lived in Crediton Ontario Canada. They had 11 children Robert, William, Robert "James", Mary Ann, Thomas, Albert, Simon, Prudance,Daniel,susanna,Issac.
It's believed that William came to Canada from England at the age of 17 or 18. I am trying to trace roots back to England. And any information about this family from the Huron area would be greatly appreciated

If anyone has access to the transcript for Baird's cemetery, I'd be very grateful for any information from the gravestones for these two ladies:

1) Henrietta FORSYTH (b. 1814 in SCT) who married James MUSTARD. I'm trying to find out who her parents were and hope this is listed in the MI. (I believe she died in 1882)

2) OCFA lists MUSTARD Margaret Forsyth (indicating her maiden name was MUSTARD and she married a FORSYTH. I can't find her in my family tree and would like to know what info is included in her MI.

James and Ellen Street, Goderich

James A. Street, age 48, teacher, died July 14, 1878, in Goderich Town. Informant shown as Bond Lawrason, Colborne.
Ellen Street, age 52, widow of James Street, died December 14, 1879, in Goderich Town.Informant shown as Francis B. Lawrason, Colborne. Ellen Street may have been a Lawrason, though that's a guess.

Does anyone know where James and Ellen Street are buried? It looks as though both were Anglicans.

Francis Lawrason was with Marcia Pinkerton in Hamilton in 1881. She was a Lawrason and she and her husband Robert are buried in Goderich Cemetery (Maitland Cemetery?). Marcia was in Goderich with Alfred Naftel, her son-in-law, helping with his large family in 1891. Francis Bond Lawrason isn't present, but will be the Bond Laurason who appears on the Huronview Cairn. He died in 1915 at the House of Refuge in Clinton. He was likely the son of Joseph Lawrason and Samantha Curtis, but I'm still working on that.

If anyone has a marriage record for James and Ellen Street or Robert Pinkerton and Marcia Lawrason, I'd be glad to hear of it. I haven't found them in the District or County registers.

Looking for anyone with information on the Arneil family who lived in Howick Township in 1860-1873. The parents were John and Lucy Arneil. Their children were: Lucy, Elizabeth, Adelaide, Mary Jane, Jemina, Hannah, William, Samuel and Margaret. Elizabeth married Charles Wright and Mary Jane married Joseph Neill. Both of them stayed in Huron County when the family moved in 1873 to Manitoba.

John and Lucy married in 1850 in Lanark County where Lucy grew up. Her parents were Abel and Lucy (Webster) Martin.

Love family in Huron County Ontario in the 1800's.

James Love married Eliza Airth in Huron County in 1855 and they stayed there until the 1880's.I am interested in finding information on James' father and mother Thomas and Mary. Thomas and Mary had 3 children William,James and Jane,and I am a descendant of James and Eliza.
There is a Thomas Love buried in the Maitlandbank Methodist cemetery in Mckillop township and there are 2 Marys buried in the same section.
Is there anyone who knows about the history of the Loves in the area and can give advice on where to confirm information? I need to do this through email as I live far away.

Does anyone know where I can see a layout of this cemetery? Yesterday I spent about an hr looking for ancestors headstones. I know that the headstone is No 49 (Donald Fraser) but never did find. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. It is a beautiful country cemetery well maintained. We will be going back up in that area in about another week. THANKS

Hi Everyone, My G-Grandfather lived and died in Goderich, Huron, Ontario, Canada. James Stewart b. 14 May 1844 Ireland, married Margaret (Maggie) Whyte (White) in 1873. They had a son, Ernest Arthur Stewart (my Grandfather) b 26 Oct 1881 in Goderich. James died 26 Apr 1915 in Goderich.

Ernest married Kathleen Ellen Jones (sister of Ginny Jones Busbridge) who arrived in Canada via the United States after coming from England.

I'm looking for any and all information about this family.

Chauncy Showers appears in the 1881 census of Turnberry Twp, Huron County age 60 with wife Mary (McKenzie) and some of his children . Chauncy married Mary Mckenzie in Zorra Twp Oxford County on 8 October 1849. He was still in Zorra for the 1851 census, age 28. .We are trying to ascertain the correct parents of Chauncy. At this time we believe he was the son of Micheal Showers born 1798 and who lived in Blenheim Twp Oxford County and Rosannah Thornton whom he married abt 1821.. Rosannah was the daughter of Abel Thornton and Rachel Burdick Lawrence of Oxford County In 1824.Michael married Sarah House who was born abt 1807. We are trying to confirm that Chauncy was indeed the son of Rosannah. Were there older children as well of Michael and Rosannah?

My great-great-grandfather was George Cattle, an English druggist in Goderich that married Frances (Fannie) Marlton c1854. George immigrated to Ontario from Yorkshire, England. He was born in 1829 and was raised by an aunt, his parents died when he was young. He had at least three sons and a daughter: William D, Dick (probably Richard), Alfred Theodore (my great-grandfather), and Eva. There may have been more children. His drug store was called Parker & Cattle, and there was also a "branch store between Toronto and Kingston."

He is listed in the Huron County Historical Atlas as being born in Scotland and he was living in Huron County in 1879. There is also an Alexander FORSYTH listed in the Ontario index of the 1871 census who may well be the same person. He is 46 years old and living in Tuckersmith sub-district of Huron South. Grand Bend - Fountain House & Beckenhauer / Quigley

Have received a tif of the sketch of a hotel with the label "Fountain House, H Beckenhauer, propr, Grand Bend, Stephen Tp, Ontario". Someone later dated the sketch as from 1879. It is believed this refers to Henry Beckenhauer (also spelled Boeckenhauer or Bockenhauer). Although Grand Bend now appears to be part of Lambton County, I wanted to add this to the Huron board as well given their proximity.

The 1871 Census for Hay Twp, Huron County shows Henry's occupation as Hotelkeeper and I am hoping it related to the above hotel. The census (transcribed not unreasonably as Bockenhaua and Quicley) included his wife Margaret (abt 1844) and dgt Leonore (abt 1869). Margaret Quigley, dgt of my gr-gr-grandparents Bryan Quigley and Margaret Ryan, had married Henry in 1868. In 1876 the then widower Henry married Hannah Sweet and started a new family. The wedding took place in Middlesex although Hannah was born abt 1856 in Stephen, the dgt of William and Betsey Sweet.

Leonore never appeared in the later census records for Henry and Hannah. After the 1871 census both Margaret and Leonore disappeared from Henry's family history as well as from that of the Quigleys. No one knows where and when Margaret died, and nothing at all about even the existence of Leonore.

My "Fountain House" googling isn't helping this morning. Does anyone know anything about this hotel, or what it may have been named later? If the hotel lead checks out the Grand Bend cemetery/records might show Margaret and/or Leonore are buried there. Thank you for your input.

i believe that mary rennie graham's (nee mackenzie) parents were among the earliest settlers on the 2nd concession.

I am looking for information on the family of AUGUST KRUSE and ELIZABETH who settled in Huron County.

August was born in Germany about 1805-1808 & his wife Elizabeth was born in Mecklenburg Schwarin Germany about 1817.

August Kruse died sometime after the 1881 Census was taken for Blyth, Morris Tp., Huron North & before May 3, 1881. His wife, Elizabeth (maiden name unknow) died in Blyth, Morris Tp., Huron North, on Sept. 13, 1879.

August Kruse Sr. is on the 1871 Census Index living in Morris Tp., Huron North, C9932, pg. 6

His son, August Kruse Jr., born 1837/1841, is shown on the 1871 Census Index living in Colborne, Huron North, C9930, pg. 54. He married Pauline Eggert in Hullet Tp., Huron Co., in 1865. August Jr. & Pauline died in Kittson County, Minnesota in 1920 & 1913, respectively. I show 3 children for them: John, Louisa, and Edward James. My husband descends from Edward James Kruse.

I have found two other children for August Sr. & Elizabeth, but there is a big gap between the birth of August Kruse Jr. in 1837/1841 and the next two, i.e. Mary Kruse b. 1855 in Berlin, Huron Co., Ontario, who married Martin Berg in 1876 and Levi Kruse b. 1856 in Zurich, Huron Co., Ontario, who married Sarah Gorman in 1878.

I did not find the Kruse family on the 1851 Census. But, it appears that at least two of the children were born in Huron Co. in 1855 & 1856. Were there others?

Can anyone tell me more about this family? August & Elizabeth Kruse were my husband's 2x gr-granparents.

Tracing the family of John and Mary Mitchell who settled near Exeter in Stephen Twp in the early 1830's. They had a son, also John Mitchell, who married Ann Dearing. John Junior is reported to have operated a brick yard near Crediton, and merchandise stores in Centralia and Dashwood, and moved to Exeter about 1900 to operate the Railroad Hotel.

Eliza was born in Ireland around 1836. They were living in the 1881 census in East Wawanosh, and came to Michigan (Sault Ste Marie area) around 1888. Children I have found so far are:

After 5 years away from family history research i am back into it. Looking for a few missing links.
My Grandfather was apparently born in Goderich or Goderich area. It appears on his marriage cert. I also was on Ancestry.com and there is a listing for a birth of the same name in Huron but i do not have a membership.
I was wondering if someone could look that up for me.
His date of birth is 1904 or 1905 (from church records) December 24th.
His Sister Sophie was born either 1904 or 1905 on September 14th. (church records)
