Lost Threads in Lambton

Timothy J. O'MEARA and his wife Mary emigrated to Middlesex Co. from Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1847. They lived in London for many years but Mary's death notice states that she died in Watford, Lambton Co. Some of their children are listed as living there as well. I have lost the family line there. A son, Michael O'MEARA married Catherine HOWE and they moved to Belleville but the daughter of this couple, Mary Ann O'MEARA married David ROCHE and raised a family in Watford. Annie O'MEARA, Michael's sister, born in 1844 married Andrew McDONNELL and raised a large family in Watford too. Also, Timothy O'Meara's son, Timothy O'MEARA married Julia T. Byrnes and their daughter, Mary O' MEARA born about 1870 married a man by the name of HIGGINS and raised a large family in Lambton Co. Where did all of these large families go? Related names: DONOHUE, QUINN
Hello,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to lookup the death of Mary Jane Harron. Maiden name is Aikin (Aikins/Aiken/Aikens). She died between 1901 and 1911 and her last known address was Bothwell, Dawn township, Lambton County. The 1901 census state her date of birth was Aug 16 1834. She was living with her son William Harron at that time and lived next door to her other son James.

Thanks,
Tammy

I am looking for information about Amos Bentley FRINK
he lived in Sarnia, Ont. around 1840. He died (according to my records in 1848 in Sarnia, Lambton county. I would like confirmation of that if possible. He was a Captian on the Great Lakes and owned two ships. The "Globe" and the Resolution". Also any information on this family would be helpful as we have a book on the FRINK family due to go to press shortly and I
would like to close this chapter. Thank you.
I am interested in tracing the descendants of two immigrant families who settled in Warwick Twp, Lambton Co in the early 1830s.

One family is that of John Tanner, born in Wiltshire, England is 1787 and died shortly after emigrating in 1839. He came with his wife, Hannah, and six children: John (married Bedeliah Liddy), James (married Mary Ann Campbell), Charles (a lumberman in Michigan), Elizabeth (married John McIntyre), Joseph (married Eliza), and Mary.

The other family is that of John Liddy, born in Co. Clare, Ireland in 1800 and died in Warwick Twp, Lambton Co. in 1882. He came with his wife, Susanna Egan. Two of their children were born in Ireland: Hesteria (also known as Hester or Hessy, married Thomas Kenward), Bedeliah (married John Tanner, see above). The other children, born in Canada, were Jane Frances (married David Lamb), Edward (married Catherine Elliot?), Rebecca (married David M. Ross), and Susannah (married James McGillicuddy).

I have quite a bit of information on these families which I would be happy to share.

Hi: Just trying to find more on Eliza Phipps(ALLWORTH)Claris she married Christopher Charles Claris at St.Thomas Anglican Church Elgin,On. 9 July 1840.I am descended from her sister Henrietta Married Noah Silcox.
Anyway seems to me I remember going to a golden wedding anniversary up in Sarnia area years ago to do with this side of family but met so many people I don't remember much and no one could really explain relationship just that we were related. They had a William who became a Reverend and from census material(1881) I found he married a woman of german descent in census family was Julia 8yrs old,Charles 5 yrs old,Amelia 1, wife Siranah?Horton? m.July 19th 1872? Frome,On
Their other children listed as Amelia 1841,Sarah Judith(know she married Silcox cousin)then Rev William, next Julia 1848 then John 1852 and all born in Frome,On.Can.It's also stated in Silcox Saga that Sarah was only survivng child? Female-I'm guessing ? No further info than that?
Thanks in advance for any info or if your related well hi their. Sue Podolinsky
Grand Bend - Fountain House & Beckenhauer/Quigley

Have received a tif of the sketch of a hotel with the label "Fountain House, H Beckenhauer, propr, Grand Bend, Stephen Tp, Ontario". Someone later dated the photo as from 1879. It is believed this refers to Henry Beckenhauer (also spelled Boeckenhauer or Bockenhauer).

The 1871 Census for Hay Twp, Huron County shows Henry's occupation as Hotelkeeper and I am hoping it related to the above hotel. The census includes his wife Margaret (abt 1844) and dgt Leonore (abt 1869). Margaret Quigley, dgt of my gr-gr-grandparents Bryan Quigley and Margaret Ryan, had married Henry in 1868. In 1876 the then widower Henry married Hannah Sweet and started a new family. Leonore never appeared in the later census records for Henry and Hannah.

After the 1871 census both Margaret and Leonore disappeared from Henry's family history as well as from that of the Quigleys. No one knows where and when Margaret died, and nothing at all about even the existance of Leonore.

My "Fountain House" googling is getting me no where. Does anyone know anything about this hotel, or what it may have been named later? And if anyone should happen to have access to the Grand Bend cemetery/records would you be able to check if Margaret and/or Leonore are buried there. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Garnet Quigley

I am trying to find information on Robert Mc Cordic born around 1793 in Bellyshannon, Ireland. I know that he came to Canada as a young boy and eventually married Mariah Fletcher and had eleven children. Robert and Maria lived in New Brunswick and eventually moved to Ontario. I would love to find out if there is anyone that has any information on his parents over in Ireland. Or if anyone has any idea on how I can access files over in Ireland. According to a note that my Uncle had on the Mc Cordic's they were driven out of Ireland around the time of King James and in order to return to their homeland they had to change the spelling of the last name.

I am researching the Bassett family, namely Ralph Bassett and Frank(Francis) Bassett from Montreal who would have moved to Lambton around 1853. Ralph established himself at Sarnia while Frank could have gone to Algonac, Michigan. I have located Ralph on the 1861 and 1871 census returns but I lose him there after. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

My great grandmother was Margaret Allen. She immigrated to Canada from Ireland when she was about 5 years old, on Nov 17, 1847 in Bosanquet. Margaret's parents were James and Mary
In 1859 she married John Ginn a resident of Arkona, native of England. I would like to know where the Allens ship may have disbarked, so I can see if I can locate the part of Ireland they came from. My uncle says his grandmother had burns on her face that were a result of a fire that distroyed her home in Ireland. He said the fire was set because of religious differences of their neighbors.

I am begining with Isabelle and Stanley Dunham and trying to go back I have found that Isabelle was born a Scroggie and had two brothers Robert and William. I am not sure about Stanley's siblings. I know that Isabelle and Stan lived in Point Edward for many years and that Stan had been involved with horses and may have been a milk devilery person at one time. Please if you have any information that you think may be realative let me know.

The following was in the Free Press Sunday May 4, 2008. I thought there might be someone on this forum who would know who this is. Debbie Burr

Searching for relatives of Archie McLean, Lancaster pilot

I'm writing from England in the hope Free Press readers might be able to help me trace a member of the McLean family so I can pass on information I've unearthed about the death in 1944 of Pilot Officer Archie Stewart McLean, killed in action in the Second World War. I understand there may be members of the family living in London.

Archie grew up in Petrolia and would have been about 16 years old when the war began in 1939. Like many young Canadian lads, he joined the militia at 17 and then RCAF as soon as he was old enough at 18 and set sail for England "to do his bit." On completion of his training as a Lancaster bomber pilot, he was posted to 50 Squadron at Skellingthorpe near Lincoln, England.

I got to know of Archie when I was researching my wife's family history because her uncle, John Sillender, was the tail gunner in Archie's crew and they both appear in photographs John left behind. In trying to find out what happened to John I've managed to piece together the events that led to the sudden death of the crew, two Canadian and five British, on the night of Sept. 12, 1944.

For some time after the war, the two mothers corresponded, but contact was lost when John's mother died 30 years ago and the letters have not survived. Recently, however, a friend who lives in Germany kindly agreed to photograph the graves of the crew for me in Rheinberg Cemetery and the pictures arrived a few days ago. All seven young airmen lie together, side by side. At the base of Archie's headstone, rooted in the bare March ground, is a small bleached and weather-beaten wooden cross -- clearly someone remembers him and has visited his grave within the last two or three years.

I'd like to pass on the information I have. It may be of some value to his family. I'd be most grateful for any help you can give.

Jef Robinson

Chester-le-Street, United Kingdom

jyrob@hotmail.com

William Walker Dawn Township

I am looking for William Walker who married Sarah Gibson in 1843. They were married in Chatham but the marriage record says they were from Dawn. Does anyone have a guess why they would have been married in Chatham and not Dawn?? This marriage record is all I can find on this couple. They had two sons James and Robert but seems to disapear. Sarah is found in the 1880 US census living in Oregon married to a Luman Howe. On that census record it says that she came to the US in 1856. ANY ideas will be appreciated.

Sherry

I am trying to find information on my Great-grandfather Alexander Beaul(Ball) who was born in about 1856. He married Margaret Marshall-daughter of James Marshall and Martha Symington- in 1880 and moved to Michigan, where he died in 1892. He had a brother Zebedee Beaul born 1860 who married Katie MacDonald and lived in Bothwell. He also had brothers John, Issac, Eli and maybe others. Their father could be either John or Zebedee Bull or Beaul and I think their mother was Mary. Any information would be appreciated! Thankyou, Martha Hart

McPhederan in Plympton

Recent family research has revealed a new connection to the family of Peter Campbell and Nelly/Ellen McLarty. This family came from Scotland and eventually settled at Nassagaweya, Halton Cty. in the 1840's. Their youngest daughter Christiana Campbell married George Gray and they settled in Bosanquet Twp. Lambton Cty. after their 1862 marriage. Christiana's obit mentioned some nephews and family we were not aware of . It turns out that Christie's sister Janet married John McPhederan/McPhedran and this family lived in Plympton. Two of their daughters--Flora and Mary married into the Buchanan family of Plympton and another, Nancy married Robert Anderson. The Anderson's son William Wesley also came to Bosanquet. Another daughter, Ellen married John Napper and they too settled in Plympton. Another sister of Christie's, Jane married Hugh McTaggart and they lived in Ekfrid Twp. Middlesex Cty. as did Christie's brother Duncan. Christiana Campbell Gray was the youngest member of her family and when she died in 1922 all of her siblings were gone. So the family had no idea that there were relatives so close. My question is, are there any descendants of these families still living in Lambton? I would love to make contact with any cousins. Many thanks for your help. Debbie Burr

Finding unmarked graves in Hillsdale Cemetery

I have an obituary for a Mrs. (Captain) Martha Tomlinson, who died April 12, 1901. Her obit was in the Petrolia Advertiser and Canadian Oil Journal on April 17, 1901. The obit states that she was buried in Hillsdale Cemetery, but the OCFA does not show her. Is it possible that she is buried in an unmarked grave, and if so, how do I find out??
Also, she was married to Captain Nicholas Tomlinson, and according to the obit for Martha, it sounds as if he was still living when she died. I can't find a death registration for him, nor a gravesite. The obit reads, in part, as follows:
"when nineteen years old was married to Capt. N. Tomlinson, and in 1871 they moved to the 10th line of Moore Tp., where they resided until a couple of years ago, since when they have lived with their children here."
This leads me to believe that Nicholas Tomlinson was still living when his wife died. Anyone with any ideas as to how to find him??

Jonathan Brackett Euphemia Township, Lambton Co. 1861

The 1861 census of Euphemia Township, Lambton County, Ontario contains:

Jonathan Brackett, born in USA, 60 years of age who was a farmer
Mary Brackett, born in USA, 61 years of age
Newman Brackett, born in Ontario, 28 years of age
Sarah Brackett, born in Ontario, 20 years of age
John Brackett, born in Ontario, 16 years of age
Martin Brackett, born in Ontario, 24 years of age who was a farmer
Elizabeth Brackett, born in Ontario, 31? years of age (wife of Martin)
Alexander Brackett born in Ontario 1 year old

Newman Brackett is seen in the 1871 and 1881 census of Euphemia Township, Lambton County, Ontario. There was also a Henry Brackett in Kent County, Ontario in the year 1871 who was 39 years of age. Kent County is just south of Lambton County. Henry may be another of Jonathan Brackett’s sons.

Jonathan Brackett is believed to be the son of Christopher Brackett of Bennington, Vermont. Christopher moved to Elbridge, New York about 1800. His son Jonathan “moved to Upper Canada”.

The 1880 census of Allegan County, Michigan includes in Dorr:

John B. Brackett, born in Canada, 38 years of age who was a farmer
Emma A. Brackett, born in Ohio, 21 years of age
Carlottie Brackett, born in Michigan 8 years of age
Harry Z. Brackett, born in Michigan 3 years of age
Mary E. Brackett, born in Michigan 2 years of age

Note: Carlottie must have been the daughter of Myra (Blair) Brackett

and in Hopkins:

Martin Bracket, born in Canada, 42 years of age who was a farmer
Laura Bracket, born in Ohio, 43 years of age
Mazy Bracket stepdaughter (should read Nelson not Bracket)
Edna Nelson, born in NY, 14 years of age, stepdaughter
Amy Nelson, born in Michigan, 9 years of age, stepdaughter
Irene Bracket, born in Michigan 6 months old, daughter

These appear to be the sons of Jonathan Brackett of Ontario Canada (1861). Jonathan Brackett married Mary Fancher. She was the daughter of David Fancher. The book, Lambton’s Hundred Years 1849-1949 was written by Victor Lauriston and was published in 1949 by Haines Frontier Printing Company, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. On page 58 you can read: “The first actual settler in Euphemia was David Fancher. He was of French extraction, his ancestors having settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York State in early colonial days. Fancher as a boy had been a teamster in the Revolutionary Army. When he came to Euphemia in March 1825, he had a large family of grown up sons and daughters. William Walker and Jonathan Brackett, two sons-in-law, located in Lot 17, Concession 3; while Fancher himself too up Lot 18, Concession 3.” This appears to be Jonathan Brackett son of Christopher Brackett of Vermont and later New York State.

According to files found at www.rootsweb.co David Fansher was born about 1771 and died in 1852. He is buried in the Fansher Cemetery, Euphemia Township, Lambton County, Ontario. He was the son of Richard and Sarah (Douglas) Fancher. David and Sarah had children:

Frederick Fansher b. 1797 in New York
Sarah Fansher b. 1799 in New York, married William Walker
Mary Fansher b. 1801 in New York, married Jonathan Brackett
Richard Fansher b. 15 Nov 1803 in New York
Philip Fansher b. 1806 in New York
John Fansher b. 15 Apr 1908 in New York
Eliza Fansher b. 1811
David Fansher b. 01 Jun 1812 in Montgomery, Orange Co. NY
Jane Fansher b. 1814 in New York
Cornelia Fansher b. 1818 in Montgomery, Orange Co. NY

Martin Brackett was born on 16 Jul 1834 and married Elizabeth Ferris. Elizabeth was born on 30 Aug 1828 and died on 17 Jun 1875 in Ontario, Canada. They had two children, James Alexander Brackett b. 24 Jul 1834 and Phillip Brackett b. 18 Apr 1862. It appears that after her death Martin moved to Allegan County, Michigan for a while.

Marriage records for Allegan County include the marriages of Martin and John Brackett. Martin Brackett married Laura (Parker) Nelson on 01 Jan 1878. John B. Brackett married on 15 Nov 1870 to Myra Blair and on 02 Apr 1874 to Emma Stubbert.

John B. Brackett died in Kent, Kent County, Michigan on 02 Aug 1921. He was 77 years, 11 months and 7 days old at that time. According to his death record his birth date would have been 25 Sep 1843. This record gives his father’s name as “Johnathan Brackett” and his mother’s name as “May Fanches”. It also says John B. Brackett was born in Canada and both his parents were born in Vermont.

I am trying to sell a portrait of a Lady Ann Lambton and family. It is signed by the portrait painter and engraver to the Prince of Wales. It is dated April 6th 1799. When I first got it I had an informal appraisal by Ken Farmer. This was approx. 10 yrs. ago. His estimate was somewhere around $400.00 to $500.00 due to it's condition, age and documantation of where and when and who did it, also the whole ROYAL connection. It is 18in x 23in and is in great condition. If you are interested and would like more info and to see it please contact me at xciteableboy63@hotmail.com Thank you Allen Simpkins
