His son Stephen Conroy owned it also once in 1878.
Margaret lived in Clark Mills at the time of the wedding.
I do have the copy off ancestry of the marriage registry. I don't know where they went after the wedding?
Hugh Conroy's kids Stephen and Mary went to Champion, NY in 1878.
I have seen many posts on the Maddens.

I have the citizenship records of Stephen Conroy, born in Ireland, went to Camden East for many years married in 1876 to Margaret Haley. Left and went to Carthage, Champion NY in 1878 through the port of Cape Vincent.(as per papers)
The border crossings start after that on ancestry.com

Would people have taken a ferry from Kingston to Cape Vincent. Do they have records for these crossings? in 1878? or was that port so small it didn't matter?
I am just drawing a blank of where to look.
Are there any Lennox Addington, or Frontenac newspapers that go back to 1870's on a website (Napanee Beaver) the website paper of Record does not include these yet.
Any advice?
Karen

I recently found that part of the Groom family of Monmouth, NJ that I am researching emigrated to the Kingston area. Elijah Groom spent 6 years with the New Jersey Volunteers and then emigrated in 1783. He filed claims for NJ property that was confiscated in 1786. I am interested in finding out how I could get a copy of the original papers that he filed? I would think they would be somewhere in Ontario as well as possibly in New Jersey?

Thanks for any help.
Donna Grooms Ferrell

My ancesters were 'Palentine' Germans (Rombach) who fled to Holland, to United States to Canada. They were UEL's and there is a file on the family at Queen's university in Kingson, Ontario. I am interested in doing a search of the German branch. The first Rombough (Rombach) Jacob married a Margaret Schmit. Would anyone have a connection. They settled in and around Hay Bay, Ontario and some went to western Canada and at least one went to eastern Canada. And we are wondering of the Romboldts of the east were Rombach or Rombough originally. Thanks.
Ashur

Boomhower & Davis families at Richmond in L & A County, Ontario- May 1851

Would love to correspond with anyone who is a descendent of this Boomhower-Davis line. Isaac Boomhower was indicted for the murder of James Davis in 1851; James was found dead in Lennox and Addington County in May 1851. Isaac was found not guilty.

I have just received a several pages long document where the family members and witnesses testified in the trial of Isaac Boomhower. The young man who was found dead was James Davis, son of William Rensselaer Davis of Richmond in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario and his first wife Sarah Parks.

Jane Davis, wife of Isaac Boomhower who later changed their surname to Howard, was a daughter of William Rensselaer Davis, sister to the deceased James.

The document has been a godsend- sad as it is, because it briefly confirms some of the Davis-Boomhower-Fralick family relationships.

This Davis family is a part of my own extended Davis family of Lennox and Addington County. It has been difficult for me to put the pieces together and I am very sure I do not yet have all of the family members and their spouses, children etc. Thus far I have:

James Davis born about 1781 possibly in Quebec en route from the USA; his wife Esther whose surname I don't know...she was born about 1783. They were alive in 1851 and living in Richmond, L & A County with a grand-daughter Nancy Davis, the daughter of William Rensselaer Davis.

Six children that I believe belong to same James and Esther:

Mary Davis born 1804 in NYS, died 1899 at Napanee, married to Stephen Dodson Fox of New York State (my ancestors); have names of ten children for them

William Rensselaer Davis born abt. May 1806, died Feb. 14, 1879 at Richmond, L & A County, Ontario, Canada, married twice- first wife was Sarah Parks who died in 1848; second wife was Mary Osborne; eight children with Sarah, five more with Mary. The James Davis who was murdered in May 1851 was a son of William R. and first wife Sarah.

Joseph J. Davis 1808-1883, married to Mary Windover; lived and died at Richmond in Lennox and Addington County, Ont., Canada; three known children

Eliza Davis born about 1809-1813, married Daniel Masters, six children, I have no dod for her

Stephen Davis born 1822, died 1903, married to Susannah Sedore, 15 children

James Davis born about 1824, died 1878; married Margaret Palmateer, six children with her; she died between 1858 and 1869, James re-married to Samantha Ann York in October 1869 whose first husband was George Mowers.

I realize there is a huge gap between Eliza and Stephen, so Stephen and James the younger may belong to someone else.

Back to family of William Rensselaer Davis of Richmond, Ontario- the court document has testimonies by various family members and neighbors about what happened when James Davis was killed:

Leonard Davis is mentioned as being married to the accused's sister, and I see from online info she was Elizabeth Boomhower/Howard born in 1827 in Ontario, Canada, died 1896 at Mecosta, Michigan. Leonard was born 1825 in New York and I think he may be another son of James and Esther- if he is not, he is certainly somehow related to these Davis families.

William Fralick is mentioned as being married to one of the deceased's sisters- (the deceased being James Davis) and I have found her to be Sarah Davis born about 1834, still alive in 1910 in Michigan, USA. Her husband William Fralick was born about 1827 at Richmond, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, the son of Peter Smith Fralick and his wife Elizabeth Johnson.

Stephen Davis is mentioned in the document, I believe he was the deceased's uncle.

Rensselaer Davis, father of deceased James, and Jane and Sarah, also mentioned an unmarried daughter Nancy, who had been living at Isaac Boomhower's house. In 1851 Nancy was listed on the 1851 census (re-created by Russ Waller) at Richmond in home of her grandparents James and Esther Davis. Nancy later married Henry J. Graham and had at least seven children. She died April 30, 1919 at Richmond in Lennox County, Ontario.

Rensselaer Davis also testified that the "accused" was married to the deceased's sister, and that William Fralick was married to another sister. He said the "accused" had been married seven years and had four children.

This is already a long message and I will post another follow-up regarding all the children of William Rensselaer Davis and who they married.

Nora in Alberta

As a followup to the lengthy message I posted a few days ago regarding Richard Babcock born about 1810 and his wife Elizabeth Stover born about 1805, died 1878, all of Ernestown- she being the widow of 1801 Abraham Snider who died in 1831…..

Richard appears:

1851 Ernestown as re-built by Russ Waller
1861 Ernestown
1871 Ernestown
1881 Can’t find him anywhere, cannot find his son Ezra on the 1881 census either
1891 Richard is at Kingston with second wife and 3 young sons
1901 cannot find him or Ezra, cannot find death reg. for Ezra

Richard A. Babcock died November 30, 1902 at Kingston, aged 93 years and one month.

Richard must have re-married about 1878-1880 to a woman named Margaret ROBLIN. I got her maiden name from marriage record of one son Archie Babcock who married Mary Elizabeth Baker in 1906. Richard and Margaret had at least three sons, Harry, Arney and Archie born 1880, 1882, and 1887 respectively. I cannot find a marriage reg. for Richard and Margaret. I have no idea who her parents were but she fits to be the daughter of Jacob Roblin and his wife Jemima who were on the 1861 Portland census. Does anyone know anything about this Roblin family and what was Jemima’s maiden name? I cannot find any information about Margaret and the three boys past the 1891 census; they should be on the 1901 census somewhere (possibly with Richard who did not die until 1902) and they elude me. Perhaps she did not stay with him, re-married and they are all under a different surname somewhere?

In regards to the children of Richard’s son Ezra Babcock….

A delayed birth registration was filled out for Ida Myrtle Babcock on Feb. 26, 1943 at Rochester in Monroe County, New York, by her sister Anna Maude Babcock, the wife of (Bert) Northrop. She stated name of their father to be Ezra DYER Babcock, residence Cloyne, Ontario at the time of her sister’s birth and that he was a Shoemaker. The midwife was a Mrs. Lake, mother’s name was Margaret Murray, and Anna was ten years older than Ida. Ida Myrtle Babcock was born July 15, 1889 at Cloyne.

Margaret Murray was Ezra’s second wife. They had children:

·	Melville Sanford Babcock born 1874 who married Rose Darlington, four sons who were raised elsewhere as both parents died in 1918.
·	Etta May Babcock born 1878 married Daniel J. Rogers and moved to Rochester, NYS; had six children
·	Anna Maude Babcock born 1880 married Adelbert Northrop, lived at Rochester, NYS, have names of six children for them incl. one son Melville Northrop; another son Earl Whipple Northrop died at age 17 years in June 1932; Adrien Northrop; Adelbert Junior plus sisters Gertrude and Lillian.
·	Laura Edith Babcock born 1883, no further info
·	Ada Nora Babcock born 1884, married William Schroeder, lived at Rochester, NYS; may be same person as “Laura Edith”; three sons
·	Ida Myrtle Babcock born 1889, no further info

With his first wife Martha Janetta Hunter, Ezra Dyer Babcock had three known children:
·	Lovina E. Babcock born between 1856 and 1860 who married Billings Hartman Snider, her fourth cousin and her half first cousin; one known daughter Ethel May Snider who married Alpheus Augustus Deline; this family stayed at Barrie/Cloyne area in Ontario
·	Richard Damon Babcock born about 1858, no further info
·	Henry Norman Babcock born June 24, 1863, died May 15, 1904 at age 40 years of cancer, at Barrie, Ontario, …he was married to Sarah Selona (Leona?) Winters, daughter of John Winters and Rilla Meeks. They were married Sept. 30, 1891 at Cloyne, Ontario. They had two daughters and two sons, their eldest daughter Ella Lavina or Lavina Babcock married Marshall Merritt Hawley in 1909 at Tamworth, Sheffield, Ontario- Marshall was a younger brother to my paternal great grandmother Julia Ann Hawley who married as her first husband, Hiram Keech.

The reason I knew to look for the death of Henry Norman Babcock was because Sarah S. signed a document in 1942 regarding the birth of her son Charles; she had re-married to Davis or David Cummings and was living at Madison, New York. She stated that her first husband Henry Norman Babcock had died in 1904.

From my files:

I have left out some of the legal jargon but here is a declaration signed by Sarah in regards to son Charles Babcock, the printing and handwriting are very very clear:

(Late) Registration of Birth in the Dominion of Canada, Province of Ontario

Name of Child: Charles Inor Babcock
Date of Birth of Child: August 4, 1900
Sex of Child: Male
Where Born: Cloyne, Ontario, Canada
County Born: Frontenac
Name of Father of Child: Henry Norman Babcock
Residence of Father @ Time of Child's Birth: Cloyne, Ontario, Canada
His Occupation: Farmer
Maiden name of Mother of Child: Sarah Selona Meeks
Name of Doctor Attending Birth: None

“I Sarah Babcock Cummings of the Town of Madison in the County of Madison in the ("Province" crossed out) State of New York do solemnly declare that I am the Mother of the aforementioned. I have personal knowledge of the matters herein and above set forth and the information furnished is true in substance and in fact. My first husband Henry Norman Babcock died in May 1904. I married David Cummins in the fall of same year; we came to New York State in the year 1910.”

2 more lines of legal declaration

Declared at the Town of Madison, in the County of Madison, ("Province" crossed out again) State of New York on 12 September 1942
Signed: Sarah Babcock Cummings

Some people have posted online that this Henry Babcock went to Watertown, NYS, and died there in 1920’s or 1930’s. Obviously that is NOT same Henry.

Brian Lake wrote and asked me if I knew the names of Lousia Eva Lake’s parents- she was the first wife of Charles Stewart Snider of Ernestown. (See my previous long message about same Charles). Louisa was born 1831 at Ernestown and died 1871 at Barrie in Frontenac County at age 39 years of “dropsy”. I have no proof at all but suspect she was the daughter of Nicholas Lake and Catherine Hartman of Ernestown. Their son Nicholas Daly Lake and his wife are living immediately next door to Louisa and Charles Snider on the 1871 census at Barrie, Ontario. Nicholas Lake senior and Catherine Hartman had a son named Schuyler Shibley Lake born 1841. Charles Snider and Louisa Lake had a son named Schuyler Shibley Snider.

In regards to Elizabeth Stover who was the wife of Abraham Snider born 1801 died about 1831, secondly the wife of Richard A. Babcock, I have no proof who her parents are either but if I had to make a guess, it would be Jacob Stover 1779-1861 and his wife Sarah Storms. (My guess based solely on family names).

I hope I haven’t forgotten anything important this time, if I have, will post again until I get it all down. Hope all this info helps someone. If any questions or additional info, please post here, or write to me directly.

I would like to know:

What happened to Richard Babcock’s second wife Margaret nee Roblin and their three boys from that second marriage?

Where and when did Ezra Dyer Babcock die?

What happened to Ezra’s son Richard Damon Babcock born about 1858?

What happened to Richard’s son Jacob S. Babcock born about 1842?

Thanks from Nora

I have been trying to find the actual newspapers, the microfilm # from the family history center, I can't find it. Linda Corupe is sending the copy of the obit from her book with something else I bought but I want to see the original. I am specifically looking for the Napanee Beaver from March 1896. Morris Haley who lived in Yarker is in it.
Does anyone have the number?
Thank you-Karen
I am in the United States if it makes a difference for FHC microfilm/fiche #'s

Enjoy very much the information flow that has been going on over this list in last number of days. Continue on. I'm getting bits of new information with each posting. Anybody with Hawley in their ancestry is probably distantly related to my wife. Kathy's 6th great grand aunt is Sarah Dunning daughter of Benjamin Dunning and Mary Seeley and married to Jehiel Hawley (regarded as the father of Arlington, Vermont) in 1731. Appreciate the information and the stories that go along with it. - Olav

Elizabeth Stover wife of 1801 Abraham Snider & then Richard Babcock
I see several messages from past years about some Ernestown Snider's with conflicting backgrounds/parents.

One of them is Charles Stuart or Stewart Snider born 1827, died 1901; he was married twice, first wife was Louisa Eva Lake who died in 1871, second wife Mary Ann Roy, daughter of James Roy and Elizabeth Oakes of Barrie/Cloyne, Ontario.

Charles Stuart Snider was NOT the son of Abraham Snider born 1793 and Tabitha Peters and not the son of Abraham and an Elizabeth (Roy?)- I believe that he was the son of Abraham Snider born about 1801 and his wife Elizabeth nee Stover of Ernestown. I will refer to the two Abraham’s from here on as 1801 Abraham and 1793 Abraham.

Charles S. Snider's marriage register from second marriage in November 1871 (at Barrie, Frontenac County) clearly states parents as Abraham and Elizabeth. The problem has been that no one has understood who that Elizabeth was.....and I have finally figured out who she was. More about her in a minute...

Three Snider men that I am certain were brothers to Charles S. Snider were:

Joseph Snider born about 1824 married to Elizabeth Betsy Snider- I don't know who her parents were

Valentine Snider born about 1826 married to Mary Ann Hartman, ditto- who were her parents?

Levi Snider born about 1829 married to Catherine Samantha Snider, daughter of David Snider and Mary Hartman.

There may be other siblings that I haven't determined yet....but there is not a lot of space in between these four Snider boys.

The John Collins Clark diaries as transcribed by Linda Corupe refers to the death of their father 1801 Abraham Snider as being Sept. 1837, "buried Sept. 27, 1837" HOWEVER I think that year may have been 1831 and not 1837. The reason being is that this Abraham's wife- Elizabeth Stover, re-married, perhaps even that same year, at least before 1833 to Richard A. Babcock of Ernestown. Supporting this year (1831), the transcription of Abraham Snider ’s headstone at Union Lutheran Cem. at Ernestown reads in that publication:

Entry #157 on page 10:

"Yonders my home
In memory of Abraham son of Abraham and Rachel Snider who died November 24, 1831, aged 30 years."

My best guess is that same Abraham Snider died between September and November 1831, on an old headstone it would be difficult to distinguish the month and even the year but my hunch is that the year of Abraham’s death was 1831.

I have no idea where these graves are in conjunction with one another, I suspect all are together, perhaps sharing a headstone- but in above mentioned publication for Union Lutheran Cem. at Ernestown, on page 14, are listings for Charles S. Snider, his first wife, his mother Elizabeth Stover-Snider-Babcock, and his half brother Henry Norman Babcock:

“Louisa Eva(Lake) wife of Charles Snider died May 21, 1871 age 39 years and 6 months.”

“Charles S. Snider born Sept. 1, 1827 married in 1848 to Louisa Eve Lake thence to Mary A. Roy in 1862 (not correct the year of this second marriage was 1871). Snider, Elizabeth Stover wife of Abraham Snider, thence to R. Babcock, Sept. 27, 1878, aged 72 years and 14 days.”

“In memory of Norman Babcock died July 31, 1878, aged 28 years, 11 months and 19 days.”

It was the reference to Elizabeth Stover as wife of Abraham Snider and then of R. Babcock which caught my eye and led me down this twisted path the past few days because I have been trying to sort out children of Richard Babcock. I believe his descendents knew his wife’s name to be Elizabeth Stover but I don’t think anyone knew she was first married to 1801 Abraham Snider.

The death of 1801 Abraham Snider’s MOTHER was also noted in the JCC diaries, Linda’s page 239:

“Mrs. Abraham Snider, widow of the 3rd Concession of Ernestown died June 14, 1850”- this would be Rachel nee Amey, born 1768 at Saratoga in Albany County, New York State, widow of the Abraham Snider born about 1760-1765 in Dutchess County.

The JCC diaries must sometimes confuse the daylights out of everyone- in this case, there are two distinct Abraham Snider's BOTH referred to as being "Abraham Snider Senior".....

The Abraham Snider who was married to Tabitha Peters was the son of John '"Jost" Snider and Elizabeth Amey. His dob appears to be Feb. 23, 1793. There is an Abraham Snider at Wilton cem. who died March 25, 1869 age 76 years. This must be same Abraham. The death of his wife Tabitha Peters was recorded in the JCC diaries:

"Mrs. Abraham Snider, daughter of the late Joseph Peters of Ernestown, died of lingering cancer, April 9, 1857". (Page 239 of Linda Corupe's transcription)

Her husband 1793 Abraham Snider re-married to the "Widow Colyer", mother of 11 children...on January 16, 1862. Her name is also recorded as Collier, and I have seen references to her maiden name being ROY but have not researched that at all.

I believe that she is buried at the Union Lutheran Cem. and is listed on page 7 of that transcription, entry #98:

“Elizabeth wife of Abraham Snider died March 6 1882 age 70 years and 9 months”.

She is listed on same page as the parents of 1793 Abraham Snider- John and Elizabeth, entries 103 and 104:

“Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth wife of John Snider who died May 9 1846 aged 75 years”.

“Sacred to the memory of John Snider who departed this life June 7, 1842 aged 70 years”.

I couldn’t figure out why Elizabeth (Collier) second wife of 1793 Abraham Snider is buried at the Union Lutheran Cem. while Abraham is at Wilton, but perhaps that is where Abraham’s first wife Tabitha Peters was buried?

On the 1861 Ernestown census as transcribed and indexed by Linda Corupe, 1793 Abraham Snider is found on page 67, age 66 years and a widower, with four of his sons on same page:

Nelson Snider who married Margaret Nicholson;

Abraham Snider Junior who married Jemima Eliza Jane Stover daughter of Jacob H. Stover and Margaret Hartman;

Jacob Snider who is listed as being married, but no wife listed with him, just a son Albert age 7 years; I will have to look for name of his wife and to see if he re-married;

John Snider with wife Jane, daughters Catherine and Margaret;

and one son on the next page:

Adam Snider who married Matilda Ball.

1793 Abraham Snider had at least eight children with his wife Tabitha Peters and I have not yet verified all of them.

Back to Elizabeth nee Stover widow of 1801 Abraham Snider…

Russ Waller listed her with her second husband Richard Babcock on page 104 of his revised 1851 Ernestown census, same page as 1793 Abraham Snider and his wife Tabitha with five of their children (Nelson, Harmon, Zilpha, Abraham Junior, and Adam). In home of Adam Snider are 61 year old Nicholas Snider and his 56 year old wife Susanna Friermouth. I am not familiar with Nicholas but I know he was a brother to 1793 Abraham Snider and therefore Adam’s uncle- I have name of one child for Nicholas and Susannah as being Joel Snider born April 12, 1822 who married Elizabeth Ann Storms- did Nicholas and Susannah have any other children?

Listed at bottom of page 104, 1851 Ernestown transcription, everyone born Canada West:

Joseph Snider age 27 (recorded as being UE)
Elizabeth age 23 (also nee Snider)
Amos S. age 1 year (recorded as being UE)
Levi Snider age 23 (recorded as being UE)
Richard Babcock age 41 (not listed as UE)
Elizabeth Babcock age 46
Ezra D. Babcock age 19
Jacob S. Babcock age 10
Sidney Babcock age 8
Sarah J. Babcock age 5
Norman Babcock age 3

On page 105 are two men I believe are sons of Elizabeth Stover/Snider now Mrs. Babcock and her first husband 1801 Abraham Snider:

Valentine Snider age 26 and his wife
Mary Ann Snider age 27 (nee Hartman)

Charles Snider age 25 and his first wife
Louise Eve age 24 (nee Lake) and their son
Billings H. Snider age 2

On same page are 85 year old Isaac Snider born NYS, his 60 year old wife Catherine, a son (I assume) Robert age 25, and a 23 year old Catherine McIntosh. Who is Isaac- is he a brother to John “Jost” Snider? Was the father of 1801 Abraham Snider, i.e.) Abraham Snider born about 1760-1765 yet another brother to Isaac and John Jost Snider? Also on same page (105) are 46 year old David Snider, his wife Mary Hartman age 41, their children Eve Anna, Catherine, Damon and Mary A. Whose son was this David? Below David and Mary are 61 year old Nicholas Amey and wife Mary nee Snider age 61, children Rachel and Enoch.

In regards to Richard Babcock and Elizabeth Stover and their family- they are listed on page 66 of the 1861 Ernestown census as transcribed by Linda Corupe:

Household D14:

Richard A. Babcock age 49
Elizabeth age 55
Ezra D. Babcock age 28 now married to
Martha Janetta age 27
Jacob S. Babcock age 19
Sarah L. J. Babcock age 16
Henry H. Babcock age 13 (the “H” should have been an “N”)
Lavina E. Babcock age 5
Richard D. Babcock age 3

Ezra D. Babcock’s wife Martha Janetta’s maiden name was Hunter; she must have died between 1861 and April 1873 as Ezra re-married on April 7, 1873 to Margaret/Maggie Murray. Ezra and Margaret had five known children: Melville S., Etta May, Maud, Ada Nora, and Maggie all born between 1874 and 1889.

Immediately below Richard and Elizabeth are:

Jacob H. Stover age 51 and his wife
Margaret (nee Hartman) plus four of their children, AND a grand-daughter Emma Snider, who was born August 8, 1854, was the daughter of Rachel Stover and a Charles Snider who had seduced Rachel. I have no idea which Charles Snider he was, there were a couple in Ernestown the same age. Rachel’s father Jacob Stover sued same Charles Snider for 250 pounds sterling in this matter.

I thought that because this 1810 Jacob Stover and 1805 Elizabeth Stover-Snider-Babcock were side by side that they were brother and sister; but it doesn’t appear to be so. (I can expand on that if anyone wants to know why).

Back to the family of Richard Babcock and Elizabeth Stover….their son Sidney Babcock who is listed on the 1851 census and who was born about 1843-1844 was killed by lightning on June 20, 1860 at Ernestown- the notation was made in the JCC diaries but not identifying his parents, however at the bottom of the page for the 1861 Ernestown census where his parents are listed (page 66/1861 Ernestown) is a notation:

Household 14: 16 year old male struck by lightning

Those notations were any deaths that were recorded in the year previous to the taking of the census (1861).

I can find nothing about Jacob S. Babcock past 1861- does anyone know what happened to him? He was born about 1842. I cannot find Ezra Babcock and family on the 1881 census anywhere, and they must be somewhere….anyone? They are on the 1891 census at Barrie in Frontenac County. I can’t find Ezra past that- no date or place of death. He may have gone to the USA as I have found his second wife and 2 daughters (from second marriage) there up to 1920 and 1930.

Richard and Elizabeth Babcock’s daughter Sarah L. J. Babcock was Sarah Lovina Jane born May 3, 1845, died Sept. 8, 1917 at Kingston of cancer. She was married to John Walker, lived at Norwood, Peterborough, then Tweed in Hastings County, and Portland in Addington County. She and John Walker had 2 sons that I know of.

Richard and Elizabeth’s son Henry Norman Babcock was born about August 11, 1848, died July 30, 1878 at Ernestown of typhoid fever. He was a shoemaker and was married to Mary Jane Lemmon. They were married Dec. 27, 1871 at Kingston where Mary Jane was born. Her surname has been erroneously recorded in several places online as “Simmons” but it was Lemmon. Her father was Thomas, her mother Lydia Smith. I have found 11 siblings for her so far, born between 1851 and 1878. On the death reg. for Henry Norman Babcock the informant is listed as Thomas Lemon- this would be either his father-in-law or a brother-in-law, Mary Jane did have a brother named Thomas.

I found two sons for Henry Norman Babcock and his wife Mary Jane Lemmon: Norman born 1875, can’t find him past 1891, and George L. born Nov. 15, 1876, can’t find him past 1901. Mary Jane re-married twice after the death of her first husband: on Feb. 18, 1883 she married Isaac Fraser, the surname sometimes recorded as Frasier; he was born 1824 at Ernestown, the son of Daniel and Martha Fraser. Isaac’s first wife had been Frances, but I have not searched for her maiden name yet. Mary Jane and Isaac had one son named Donald Ernest Fraser born November 22, 1884. In 1911 Donald married Margaret Kelso. Mary Jane’s third husband was John Crickmore Thorne, born 1838 at Annapolis, Nova Scotia, son of Woodbury Thorne and Maria Sabine King. John C. Thorne’s first wife was Clarinda Clark who died in 1887. John C. married Mary Jane Lemmon on Feb. 18, 1892 at Battersea in Frontenac County.

The Henry Norman Babcock who was son of Richard Babcock and Elizabeth nee Stover has been erroneously recorded in many places online as having moved to Watertown, New York and died there in 1920’s. That is NOT him. I would be happy if someone could send me the exact dates for that particular Henry Babcock, names of his wife and children so I can figure out who he was. There were Babcock’s who went from Ontario to Jefferson County in NYS, so I am assuming he is of that lineage.

This is probably one of the longest messages I have ever posted and I have to take a break, have been at this for two days now almost non-stop, but I am sure that what I have researched and said here is important in sorting out some Ernestown families. If anyone wants additional information, such as the marriages, deaths, births, census info, etc., that I do have, and which support what I have said, please let me know. I am very grateful as always to Linda Corupe for her publications, to Russ Waller who is no longer with us but his work lives on through his publications, to all the people I will never ever meet who tirelessly transcribe records, to Ancestry.com who acquired the massive Ontario database for births, marriages and deaths- to all the people who post their own queries and provide bits and pieces of information that are always important pieces of the larger puzzles.

There is a lady named Ava R. who has posted several messages about some of these individuals, can you please contact me Ava so I can help you sort out some of your families if possible?

Nora in Alberta
William Houghtaling

I seeking any new information for WILLIAM HOUGHTALING of Lennox. He was born about 1794 either Lennox or US. He died before 1835, possibly as early at 1829. His wife was Mary Davy.
I know of three children: Mary Ann born about 1820 who married Asa Kemp. Margaret born about 1824 who married James Sweet Graham. (The Graham's are my direct ancestors)
James born about 1828 who married Harriet Owens.
The only substantiated historical record I have for this fellow is his marriage listed in the records of Rev. John G. Wignant. I believe the Houghtaling family to be of the Lutheran faith.
I'm hoping to discover where he was born, his parents names, his occupation (think he might have been a blacksmith), any siblings for himself as well as any more children from his marriage to Mary Davy.

I have a Lucinda Clark in my family tree, b.1809 USA that married a Wagar. Have been trying to find her parents. I suspect her father is Amasa Clark, living nearby in Camden East Twp. b. 1779 USA.

There are several Clarks around that are the right age to be siblings of Lucinda. On the 1851 and 1861 census there are a Chester Clark, Reuben Clark, John Clark... all born about 1805-1810 USA.

Has anybody done research on this family? Am I on the right track?

A commerative booklet is in the works (for Palatines who came to Ontario, Canada) as part of the 300th anniversary celebration of the 1709 emigration from the Palatine region, to Ireland & then to Ontario. Several of these families came to Camden Township from County Limerick, Ireland (others via USA). I am trying to contact as many descendants/researchers of these families as possible in order to compile the most ACCURATE & COMPLETE information regarding the earlier generations (1st & 2nd generations to Ontario).
Thank you in advance,
Cindy Smith
cipa@sympatico.ca

Jacob Hillier & his two wives: Elizabeth & Mary

Jacob born in New York, died in Ernestown Twp., in 1871 by census estimate 95 years. Jacob md. by Rev. McDowall in 1802 to Elizabeth Boice who was dead by 1819 when wife #2 Mary shows on 1819 Loughborough Twp. census in his h/h and as wife on subsequent census. I have been told there is a newspaper printed obit for Jacob stating he died in Ernestown Twp. at age 107 and survived by wife. Does this obituary name wife by given name? Some family group sheets list Mary as wife #1 and Elizabeth as wife #2 so I want to establish this is same Jacob and that the wife situation is Eliz #1 & Mary #2--the only source quoted for Elizabeth as #2 is Jacob Hillier's obit.
My 2nd great-grandfather was a nephew to Elizabeth Boice Hillier but did not know her and her death occurred possibly some years before, as my John Boice was born in 1814; however John does name Jacob's sons William as a cousin.
My thinking is Elizabeth is wife #1 and she possibly died in childbirth with son #2 or the Elizabeth who is listed on the 1819 Loughborough immediately following Mary Hillier. In this census the males were listed in age groupings separately from females who were listed only in female listing column in what turns out to be descending age order (from known birthdates of my Benjamin & Margaret Boice family members).

Leads suggest she was born in Kingston Twp. c1832. She supposedly died at Bath in 1892. I have been able to follow her life after her marriage but can't find out anything before her marriage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the family of John WOOD b. abt1816 & Mary
CALDWELL b. abt 1826. They were originally from Camden Twp, Addington Co.,Ontario, Canada. In 1851/2 they were in Seymour Twp, Northumberland and returrned to Camden. John was the son of Bradford Wood and Jemima Pomeroy. I have tracked the family from the 1851 to 1871 census but then hit a dead end. I am unable to find them in the 1880 US or 1881 Canadian census or any of the male children in the 1920 US census.Nor are there marriages in the Lennox and Addington registers. Here are the names of their children:
James b abt 1845,
Elizabeth b abt 1848,
Bradford b abt 1849,
Daniel b abt 1851
Hannah b. abt 1852,
John b abt 1855,
Paul? hard to read, 1858
Jennet/Ginnet b 1861,
twins Sarah and Harry b 1865
Malcolm b abt 1868.

I don't know if they went to the US or stayed in Canada.
Does anyone have these names in their family?
Joanna Waugh
Hamilton, Ontario

Has anyone come across these two?
Esther Hough, born Bef. 1793. She was the daughter of Bruin Hough,U.E. and Mary Walker. She married William Sickles born 1791 in Ontario. She applied for a loyalist land grant -I don't know if it was granted or where... they had a daughter- Maribah who in 1852 married George White in Alnwich township. Family stories tell of their going to the Manitoulin in a small boat with all their worldly goods and father (William Sickles in his eighties!) packed up front with the goods.
clues appreciated , info celebrated!
Lynn

I have just found the exact date of death (June 15 1923) for Lucinda Bowen in Montana, USA, and spent the morning working on her family info. She married Joseph Barraugh August 3, 1869 at Kaladar. I have names of six children all born in Ontario, This family emigrated to USA about 1890. Of the six children I have marriages for three, and three daughters I have no info for past 1881.

Joseph Barraugh had a brother Isaac who married Harriet Cassibeau daughter of Peter Cassibeau and Clarissa Beausoleil. Isaac and Harriet also moved to Montana, USA. I have names of seven children for them so far.

I have been hoping for seven years that I could find the maiden name of Lucinda Bowen's mother- Ann or Angeline who was married to Caleb Bowen and lived in L & A County. I wonder if that information is on Lucinda's death record from Montana?

Nora

Joshua married Elizabeth Ann Brown but I do not have their marriage record which would indicate who their parents were.
I also am looking as partial information of the 1861 census for Camden East Township. It appears that Joshua, Elizabeth and there son Sanford are living with another family. Could anybody tell me what their relationships are to the other people. I believe this is in part 7.

GALT - South Fredericksburgh

I am trying to find out information on the Galt Family of South Fredericksburgh. (I descend from Jane Galt.) Does anyone have information on this particular branch of Galts?
I haven't yet been able to confirm the correct first name of their father, but the mother's name was Sarah Cartwright. All the girls were born in Ireland, and I didn't find the family on the 1861 census. They do appear on the 1871 census, but their father does not. (Their mother Sarah Galt was living with her son in 1871).

These are the marriage records for the girls:

Margaret Galt (daughter of EDWARD and Sarah) married Daniel Foster (son of Moses and Hannah) on 17 Nov 1865 at South Fredericksburgh.

(Margaret had a son listed on the 1871 census as "Edmond" and then on the 1881 census as "Edward".)

Jane Galt (daughter of EDWIN and Sarah) married John Green (son of William and S. E.) on 14 May 1867 at South Fredericksburgh.

Sarah Galt (daughter of EDMOND and Sarah) married John Riley Loyd (son of Simeon and Carolin) on 11 Aug 1875 at South Fredericksburgh.

Thanks!

I am searching for information on John RAYMOND m. 1810 Lavinia WALKER, (dau. William WALKER UEL). John and Lavinia are in the 1851 L&A census with Sarah Raymond and John Raymond, but appear to be too old to be their parents. I do not know the names of John and Lavinia's children.
The E? SCOTT living with them in the 1851 census, I believe to be my ancestor, Charles SCOTT, Jr. s/o Mary RAYMOND and Charles SCOTT, Sr.
I have hit the proverbial brickwall.

Charles SCOTT, Jr. is a blacksmith, and I have tracked him and wife Samantha BABCOCK (dau. Daniel BABCOCK, UEL and Silence SMITH) through censuses and directory listings.

Is the William RAYMOND in the 1851 L&A Census, a child of John and Lavinia?
Are Caleb and Hudson RAYMOND, of Frontenac, related to these people? i ask this because, Jason or John HUNTLEY, who married a Mary WALKER, widow (Lavinia's sister??), appears with these people in 1851 in Frontenac. Could Mary be the widow of Bruin HOUGH?

I am stuck on my Scotts, as they do not appear to belong to anyone!! I have found traces of them in Kennebec, Pittsburg, Wilton...

Any input into these questions is appreciated. Help!!

Thanks.
