I am trying to figure out whether Daniel O'Brien b Ireland maybe in the 1820s is the brother of Patrick O'Briend, b the same.

Daniel's wife was Catharine Russel.

Patrick's wife was Ellen Murphy.

Patrick, Ellen and 2 of their children, Mary and Michael, immigrated to St. Catharines in the 1850s.

I can link the two families later through a distant marriage, but my instincts are telling me these two are brothers. Of course I can find very little information on either of them so any help is appreciated!

Richard Austin Bastow of St Catherines or Lincoln

My great great grandfather Richard Austin Bastow was born in the United Kingdom and migrated to Canada sometime between 1862 and 1867. I think he may have lived with his wife around St Catharines or Lincoln.

He married Catherine Broadbent in 1862 in England and he was discharged from the Volunteer Force of Canada in 1867.

I have a copy of his discharge document which lists him being in No 3 Co. 19th Lincoln Bttn V.Inf. It is dated 11th March 1867 and the place is St Catharines. He is listed as Private Richard Austin Bastow and the discharge is signed by E.S.Parnall Leit.Camdg.

I don't know when he migrated to Canada. I was wondering where could I find a migration lists that would say when he arrived in Canada?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find anyone with information on my great grandmother whose maiden name was Ellen High, believed born in Jordan, Ontario in 1848. She married William Shelly. Her father could have been called Frederick. They lived in the St. Catherine's area and William Shelly was a baker by trade. There is a native connection to my family and am trying to find out if it is through Ellen High or not. In the 1891 census it listed 4 children, James, William, Emma and Fred who was my grandfather. Hope someone can help.

1836 Court Records in St. Catharines

I found what I believe is my 3g grandfather Samuel H. Farnsworth in a book that reflected the Niagara District Quarterly Sessions 1835-1840.
He was accused of molesting his daughter Harriet Dougherty Sears and was sentenced to 3 months in Jail. Other names mentioned at the trial were James H. Sears, Ann Sears and Elizabeth Farnsworth.
I believe he is my 3g grandfather because his middle name was reflected as Hathaway.
My question is: Wouldn't there be other records reflecting more personal detail about the person that was on trial? Records that may state the birth date, birth place etc.
Any help and/or advise on how to find this information would be appreciated. Looking for something that would substantiate that this is in fact my 3g grandfather.

I am looking for any information about my Ellis ancestors who lived in the St. Catharines area in the 1870's. I believe John Ellis' home was on Lake Shore Road.(?) His niece and nephew, Emma and Thomas T. Ellis, came to live with him from Godalming, Surrey County, England after both parents died. They arrived aboard "The Scotland" in late May of 1872, and Emma Ellis died 10 or 11 days after arriving, on June 3, 1872. She is buried in St. James Cemetery in Toronto. Thomas T. Ellis was my great-great grandfather. I'm especially interested in John Ellis and finding the names of John Ellis' parents so I can continue my family research.

UPTHEGROVE surname in Niagara in late 1700s

Nancy Ann UPTHEGROVE born in Ontario circa 1805 married (1837) Dennis KELLEY (or O'Kelley) also born in Ontario circa 1805. According to RootsWeb's WorldConnect the couple had five children, at least one of whom, their daughter Amanda, is known to have been born in Ontario (in Wainfleet Township in 1845). Nancy and Dennis at some point moved their family to Wisconsin where Dennis died in 1850 and Nancy remarried.

Looking especially for information on the parents of Nancy and Dennis. I have found a John UPTHEGROVE and Ann OBRAM UPTHEGROVE living in the Niagara area in the late 1700s. They are said to have come over the border from the USA during or immediately after the Revolution. Ann is thought to have some blood relationship to Seneca Chief Cornplanter. From various online sources I found the names of three sons born in Niagara: Abram (born 1776) Peter (born 1779), and Benjamin (born 1785).

Trying to see if there is any tie-in for Nancy to this family...a daughter???

Looking for information regarding any Westover in Ontario. A William Westover married Catharine Hostetter in Lincoln, Ontario 7-2-1805. According to www.familysearch.com William died in Grantham Township in 1836. They had 14 children born between 1806 and 1825(all in Lincoln, Ontario except 1). One son was Horace Westover(born about 1808 in Lincoln and died about 1851 in Ontario(I believe he's my great great grandfather). My great grandfather's name was also Horace. My grandfather's name was Jacob and he was born 10-27-1865(near Mt. Brydges, Ontario and died 4-17-1931 in Butman Township, Gladwin County, Michigan USA. He married a Margaret Matilda Foster(born 8-1-1871 in Tillsonburg, Ontario and died 7-24-1924 in Marlette, Michigan). Margaret and Jacob were married in Michigan on 3-26-1889, and are both buried in the Marlette, Sanilac County, Michigan Cemetery. William and Catharine's children were as follows:

www.familysearch.com states William's parents as John Westover and Ruffus Austin who were both born in Simsbury, Hartsford, Connecticutt(John 8-12-1738 and Ruffus 10-24-1735), and married in Sheffield, Berkshire, Massachusetts in July of 1761. John died in Caldwell Manor, Quebec in July 1761(same month/year married-this can not be correct as the website shows them having 7 children between June-1762 to March-1778), and Ruffus sometime between 1798-1804(location not known).

I am searching for any information about John Reilly Junior, son of John Reilly Sr. Junior born 1778 in NY colony,probably Mohawk Valley. Junior came into Niagara area as a child. He married (unknown) and is said to be father of Patrick, George, Sarah and Elizabeth. There are records of descendants of Patrick son of Junior but nothing has appeared to show descendants of George, Sarah and Elizabeth. I have seen material indicating that the Wintermute Family adopted REILLY CHILDREN but no explanation as to whom they once belonged, given names or circumstance under which adoption was necessary.Patrick, son of Junior was supposed to have been born in Esquesing Township in 1806, a very early date for a settlement in that Township. Having a lot of trouble finding the ancestors of my Grt Grandfather John Henry SMITH. John was born in Lincoln County August 29, 1844. In his marriage write up it said November 28, 1866 John Henry Smith, Clinton, Thorald son of Henry and Annie Smith married Mary Catherine Konkle.

I have some background on the Konkle family but as you can guess John Henry Smith has proven difficult. John and Mary Catherine had the following children: William Henry (grandfather), Pearl, George Hamilton, Delbert, Fred .

They moved from Beamsville to Lambton County about 1888 and then to Tobermory, Bruce County in early 1900's.

Does anyone know the background of this family in Lincoln County, specifically John's parents Henry and Annie Smith? This is a tall order but I have been very fortunate in finding information via this medium and thought it worthwhile checking

I recently learned that Elmer Gordon Grant, born Cape Breton, died on 31 March 1967 and was buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines. Can anyone suggest how to obtain an obituary for him?

Also, Mary Ann (Mae) Grant, widow of Elmer's brother, Clyde Grant, lived on Newport St. in that city from 1961 until about 1986. Clyde himself died no later than 1961. I am aware that both brothers lived and worked in St. Catharines in the late 1930's and early 1940's, but have no information on family, date of death, etc. Any help with further data on that family would be deeply appreciated.

Years ago I saw a list of cemeteries in Grimsby that had a tombstone of Elizabeth Jones. Her age was sixteen. I am trying to find out if she were married. It is possible that Asa Peter Jones was her husband before he married Lydia Morse.
I am still on the quest of parentage of my Asa Peter Jones.
Can't find a marriage of Asa P Jones and Lydia Morse or any other marriage of Asa Peter Jones.
Asa was born in MA, lived in Elgin/Malahide for years before he went to Michigan. He died in Genesee County, MI in 1875.

I was told that the name of this Reverend could not be found in the location the marriage took place. Perhaps he was from another county? Would anyone know of the religious affliation of this Reverend? I thought he might have been Wesleyan Methodist. Can anyone help me?

Mary Ann MCGUIRE was born in Ireland circa 1830. She married John DARBY UE of Grantham (son of George and Margaret). Mary Ann and John had 9 children according to what I've read on RootsWeb's WorldConnect. Mary Ann died in 1893 and is buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery.

I would like to find out if Mary Ann has any connection to Owen MCGUIRE Sr. of Grantham...his daughter perhaps. Owen MCGUIRE Sr. is my great-great grandfather. To date I have only found the names of two of his children.

Could this be Christian Nicol? Does anyone have more information on Catherine Nicol?

Will someone check the 1861 Census for her? If not, how can I check the 1861 census from Wisconsin.

Was roaming the cemetery today came across a tall gravestone for Eliza the beloved wife of Samuel S. WEAVER Died March 1862 AE 30 YRS.(this was at the front), on one side Roland WEAVER born June 16, 1856, dIED Oct. 27, 1881, the other side Samuel WEAVER DIED June 21, 1892 Aged 61 Years. 3 other headstones are with this one - to the left FATHER is on the top of stone, to the right I could only get a date DIED Apr. 21, 1924 Aged 70 Years, one headstone behind all I could read was the name Eliza. I took a photo if anyone would like it.

John McKay of Niagara merchant 1792-1811

Capt John McKay was a 18th century Niagara entrepreneur whose significance has been overshadowed by his former apprentices, Richard Hatt and Peter Desjardins. Perhaps I am obsessed, I just think John McKay deserves more credit and I have been looking in every nook & cranny I could
imagine for tid-bits on McKay. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

John McKAY,Treasury Loyalist, Niagara Merchant 1792-1811, husband of Margaret TEEPLE, son of Donald McKay. John McKay was a founding partner first with Peter DESJARDINS (Treasury Loyalist and yes it is that DesJardins of Hamilton & the Desjardins Canal) and subsequently, Richard HATT who developed Coots Paradise/Dundas. Hatt has been described a the most successful and innovative businessman of Upper Canada (DCB). To date, McKay had been recognized merely as one of a dozen early Niagara merchants, he extensively traded in land in the district. The mill seat and town site of Dundas, was owned by McKay when the Richard & Samuel Hatt started to develop the potential.

One daughter Margaret McKay (1800-1825) m. Robert DICKSON, barrister of Niagara.
Son John Donald Mckay bapt 1797 died of Cholera in Hamilton 1834, Ancaster merchant.
Son Alexander Robertson McKay (1799-1845) m. Anna Maria Milne, Ancaster merchant.

I have checked at the Ontario Archives and on Ancestry.ca to find a marriage between John Charles Yates, son of John and Mary Yates, and Mary Ann Rees, daughter of William and Emma Rees, c1879. They were residents of St. Catharines at that time. Are records missing, or was there somewhere special that folks of that time were eloping to? Niagara Falls on the US side?

Hi All

I have posted a couple of items of late to the Lincoln Board. I have an extended family from England who made their way from London to Lincoln Co around 1907-1915. The surnames unfortunately are ripe for mistranscriptions!

WELLUM, WOOLLEY, WILLISON, WELSH, WOODAGE and LARGE are the names in the family!

Elizabeth Woodage-Willison died Mar 1928 and is buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. I am wondering who else might be with her as she had a daughter Elizabeth Willison-Welsh?

Further her sister, Mary Ann Woodage-Wellum-Large, she died Jul 1913 and I suspect she too is in Victoria Lawn with a son Fred Large who died in 1921? And possibly other of her children by the surname Wellum/Willum. Mary Ann had a daughter Adelaide-Wellum-Woolley.

Can anybody lend me hand locating these individuals?

I just received a hand up on the Cemetery Transcriptions from "ghwiley" (thanks again)and now have the death dates for 2 of my Wellum Brothers.

Is anybody able to do an Obit lookup in the St. Catherines Newspaper for me?? Walter Wellum was married as of his enlistment in WWl so perhaps he had children? Samuel I have no idea.

I am looking for info on three brothers, Samuel, George and Walter Wellum all born in England and all 3 enlisted in WWI while living in St. Catherine's Ontario Canada.

I cannot find them on the 1901 or 1911 census and suspect it is a case of mistranscription...further I think their last name Wellum might have had some creative spellings.

I cannot find any marriages, deaths or info on them other than their enlistments...I do have Ancestry and have checked and rechecked...

Anybody have something else or an idea of where I might get something on them?

I am researching the BOOK surname in Lincoln County, Grimsby, Beamsville and Smithville area. Also in Norfolk, Oxford and Halton Counties. Conrad BOOK, or Coonrod like his headstone reads in St Andrews Anglican Churchyard Cemetery in Grimsby, was one of the first family members to come to Canada from Germany via New Jersey. There is a hamlet in western Norfolk County, Ontario named after the Book family, Bookton has a few Book family members interred.

I am looking for information on William Swiss Swadling and his wife Margaret Goodrich Swadling who were living in Gainsborough, Lincoln Co. Ontario in the 1840's. They had at least 7 children: John Swadling b. abt. 1830, Moses Swadling b. abt. 1831, Nancy Swadling b. abt. 1836, William Francis Swadling b. March 23, 1839, Daniel More Swadling born March 3, 1841, & Jacob K. Swadling b. September 7, 1846. The last three boys were all born in Gainsborough. Moses Swadling married Charlotte Oliver, daughter of Leonard Oliver and Mary Persons, in the Talbot Dist. August 4, 1850. Nancy Swadling married John Henry Oliver, son of Leonard and Mary Oliver in Canada as well.

William Swadling moved his family south into Lapeer County Michigan abt. 1856. All but William Frances Swadling appear in the 1860 census for Lapeer Co. Michigan. By 1870 Robert Swadling had moved his family back to Oxford Co. Ontario. Daniel Swadling seems to have disappeared from records.

Other spellings for this surname are Swadlin, Swadlinge, and Swadlincote. We know that William Swiss Swadling was born in England abt. March 1787 and that he supposedly came to Canada as a baby. We have also heard that his wife was Margaret Goodrich, but also we have heard that she was Margaret Kennedy -- maybe Margaret Kennedy Goodrich, of Margaret Goodrich Kennedy. Moses Swadling's marriage was witnessed by a John Kennedy.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have Abraham's will that lists his children one being John A. Nelles and the wording is a bit strange:

Abraham Nelles of the Township of Grimsby County of Lincoln, District of Niagara & Province of Upper Canada.................

........ I give, devise and bequeath unto John A. Nelles my son by a sister of the late Levi Lewis deceased a part of my Grand River Tract.........

The wording is strange as most wills give a wife's name, "my wife XXX" or "my deceased wife XXX" I have never seen my son by a sister of XXXX deceased. Who is deceased her or Levi Lewis?

I'm trying to find the date and place of marriage for John Dilts and Ellen Game.
Ellen was born in Grimsby in 1877 to Isaac and Ann Game.
She married John Dilts they had 2 children Jessie Edna born 1897 and Arthur 1900 both were born in Ontario.

I'm not sure who John dilts parents were. I believe he was born in Welland around 1861.There are many John Dilts in southern Ontario so finding the marriage will help me find out which John Dilts is my g grandfather.

Looking for more information about George Thomas Campbell and Blanche Lilian Chadwick Cliffen who married at the Methodist church, Wellandport, 27 January 1914.
George was a bachelor (50) and Blanche was a widow (52), born Blanche Lilian Chadwick Hinton. She arrived in Canada between 1910 and 1914 from England.
From her marriage to Henry Cliffen in London, she had two sons: Walter Henry Cliffen (b 1888) and Charles Sidney Cliffen (b 1890). Both previously came to Canada, arriving 1905 and 1906.
