Looking for Frederick COLE born about 1803 in Canada West.
Son Nelson born in Hamilton, Ontario 7 Mar 1844. Moved to Michigan in 1863/64 to fight in Civil War. Frederick was listed in US census for 1870 but has not been found since. Frederick's father is supposedly Alexander Cole, his father is supposedly Cornelius Cole.

His brother Jacob and family and possibly Frederick's son William were found in Charlettesville and Townsend, Norfolk.

There is a Frederick Cole listed in 1871 Burford Township mortality schedule age 75 and I've found a listing in the death registery. Age 85, died 22 Oct 1869. He was a carpenter. The informant was a G. Wilson, Physician. Methodist, 31 Jan 1871. The Frederick Cole I'm looking for was also a carpenter.

Frederick had 8 children: William, who I think was living in Townsend and married Elizabeth, their children are Hiram, Allen, Clark, Clara, William;Margaret who married a Mr. Wilson; Leney who married a Mr. Cook; Job Cole; Nelson Cole; Frederick Jr. who I think is someplace in the states or moved back to Canada he was 19 in 1870; Lizzy who married Mr. HOOVER; and Lorinda who married Mr. MATTHEW, also reported to have moved to Detroit Michigan.

Jacob married Elizabeth; their children are William B. born 1838, Lemuel, Hannah, Lyena b. abt 1843 married Anna Buchanan 12 Oct 1867, Sarah, and Richard or Obeo. William B. had: William E.who lived in Waterford in 1892;Hattie; Peter: David: George.

I would appreciate any information on the Cole's or related families.

Hi all. Looking for any information on Hill/Green relatives.
My grandmother was Mina Green Hill who married Morgan Hill of six nations (sone of Elmer Hill and Mable Vyse Hill). Mina was a daughter of Cornelius Green and Melissa Jakes Green born 4/1/1910. Sadly she passed away on 11/4/1994.

Her sister's were Muriel, Jemima, Louise, Ellen and brothers Logan, Richard and Henry Green.
Her sisters spouses are Mrs. William Sowden, Mrs. Fred Vandewalle. I see all these daughters listed many times in other posts but Mina is never mentioned only that one daughter was married to Morgan Hill (who was my grandmother Mina). Did she change or modify her name? Morgan and Mina had 2 children, a daughter Anna Mae (my mother) and son Morgan R. Hill. There was mention of an older son of Mina's named Howard who was raised be one of Mina's sisters who would be in his 70's now.

Melissa's parents were Jemima & Peter Jacobs, her brothers names were Percy and Gilbert.
Cornelius' parents were George Green and Lucy Skanady and brothers were Thomas Green and George Green.
Cornelius Green resided in Townsend and was run over and killed by a car on highway 3 near Simcoe on Christmas Eve, 1940.

If you have any information you would like to share please email me at Shmooy2@wmconnect.com.

Does anyone know how to check the records for the cemetery in Teeterville? Any references to my relatives from the 19th century who lived there (Samuel Rice and his sons Emery and Chester and daughter Alcester) would have been lost in the Teeterville fire in the mid 1890s, but what about someone who was buried in 1924 (Orpha Minerva Armstrong Rice)? For some reason the family didn't have head stones so are not listed on any cemetery finding lists but I thought that the cemetery info documents could show when and if a burial took place. Any thoughts would be helpful.

UPTHEGROVE surname in Ontario in the late 1700s

Nancy Ann UPTHEGROVE born in Ontario circa 1805 married (1837) Dennis KELLEY (or O'Kelley) also born in Ontario circa 1805. According to RootsWeb's WorldConnect the couple had five children, at least one of whom, their daughter Amanda, is known to have been born in Ontario (in Wainfleet Township, Welland County in 1845). Nancy and Dennis at some point moved their family to Wisconsin where Dennis died in 1850 and Nancy remarried.

Looking especially for information on the parents of Nancy and Dennis. I have found a John UPTHEGROVE and Ann OBRAM UPTHEGROVE living in the Niagara area in the late 1700s. They are said to have come over the border from the USA during or immediately after the Revolution. Ann is thought to have some blood relationship to Seneca Chief Cornplanter. From various online sources I found the names of three sons born in Niagara: Abram (born 1776) Peter (born 1779), and Benjamin (born 1785).

Trying to see if there is any tie-in for Nancy to this family...a daughter???

Any information would be most appreciated.

My great-grandmother, Bertha Maud Lemon (daughter of Alanson Lemon) married Arthur Smith of Charlotteville on December 25, 1894. They eventually settled in Simcoe, Ontario. Their daughter, Marguerite Della, was my grandmother. I know they had at least one son, but I have not found any information. As my mother was raised by her grandmother, Bertha, the lineage tends to get murky.

My mother's father was Lloyd Wilson. I have no information about him. He and Marguerite divorced at some time, and she re-married, becoming Marguerite McCallum.

I am trying to find information about the family of Arthur Smith. Names from my childhood memories and photos that I can find are: Charles E. Smith, Warren, W. K. Smith, but I am unsure of who these people are and of the relationships. As it is a popular name, and I don't recall any middle name or initial for Arthur, it is difficult to find the right path.

I have been successful in tracing back through Alanson's family to Joseph (1718-1792).

Any information about any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

In her brother's obit it says that she lived in Charlottetown but I believe that it was supposed to be Charlotteville, any help would be greatly appreciated. She would have been born in the 1880's and her brother's names were William Edwin Russell and Leonard Russell. William lived in Waterford, ON and Leonard lived in the US and drove a Greyhound. I haven't been able to find any information on this family and I would really appreciated any piece of information that you may have available.

Hi Sue
I sent the second message off to you but it came back. Your Question How was I related? No sure my dad had a letter dated Dec.1963 from a Lloyd Cartwright from Michigan stated my dad was a relative of his named Hezekiak Cartwright who was a blacksmith at Calton, he had several children and one son name was Warren. Hesekiah had a brother Ezra bought 100 acres in Houghton Twp. Then sold it to Willaim Mabee. But my dad was born in Clear Creek and had a brother and sister they both died in Clear Creek. They were buried at the Alton / Jackson Cemetary at Clear Creek next to the sand hills. I was born in Ingersoll, but married Robert Wilson from Frogmore. But we live on Vancouver Island BC now.
Alice

Snively Family of Norfolk

I am looking for information on Catherine Snively of Norfolk who was born about 1811. I understand there is a book written about the Norfolk Snively families titled "Snively: Descendants of Rudolph and Elizabeth". If someone has a copy of it, they may be able to clear this up for me. Catherine was married to Nehemiah Dunbar (1801-?). Nehemiah's brother Darrack was married to Lucy Snively (1811-1885) who may have been a sister or cousin of Catherine. Priscilla Snively (1818-1894) was married to James H. Olmstead/Olmsted and is possibly related to Lucy and Catherine as well. Catherine and Nehemiah had eight children, some of which later lived in Welland County. I have not been able to find Catherine and Nehemiah's death in either Norfolk or Welland so far.

hello all,

i have a book that i inherited from my great grandmother that has the signature and written verse from a joseph overbaugh in 1872. he writes that he was born on the 30 day of may 1853 and that he is 19 years of age today. possibly a gift...do not know. he also writes something about a st (?) clearsvill and then a possible belmont co Ohio. he then says something about a pretty girl named sally. there are other signatures in the book with the same writing instument of a charles e. overbaugh may 1872. there is another signature that is written at what i believe is a later date with thomas jefferson brooks, millie brooks, john brooks, william brooks and others that i cannot read. some appear to be written in a quill pen. the book was published in 1866 and is called "ECHOES OF THE SOUTH". quite odd to read as it refers to the civil war as the late war. i do not know if i am related to the overbaughs but have always had an interest in the book. passed along in a family...my grandparents were from texas and the moved to new mexico. any info would be appreciated as to satisfy my curiosity and maybe connect with someone with whom these signatures may be related.

thanks, laurie

According to the 1851 Census Truman McCombs was born in Canada West around 1811. Other information I have has him born in 1803 in Massachusetts. I would love to find his birth record.

I know of four children of him: Charity Ann, Elizabeth, Eliza Jane, and William W.

On the marriage record for Charity Ann it lists her mother as Harriett M. The 1851 Census has the wife of Truman as Mary, who was 35 at the time. So Charity's mother could be known as Harriet or Mary. I can find no record of a last name for her or any record of when she died.

I am interested in hearing from any MARKLE who have ancestors located in Morfolk County. My line descends from Morgan Markle son of Michael Markle and Mary PORTER MURRAY Markle. Morgan was born in 1844 and left Windham Township in about 1874. He had married Bethany Jane SCHNEIDER in Scotland, Ontario in 1869. Bethany's family shows on the 1851 census in Townsend Township and has moved to Brant County by 1861.
Looking for information George William LEWIS, b.18 Jan 1830, in Wales. George emigrated to the U.S. along with a contingent of miners to teach Americans the techniques of mining. He later moved to Canada, first to Ancaster, then after that, to Vanessa, Norfolk Co. His first wife was Jane
FRAY. I have no idea whether they were married in Wales, U.S.A. or Canada. They were married 22 Jan 1853. Children of the marriage were Franklin J., b. 6 Mar 1855; Martin Luther, b. 1 Nov 1856; William Henry (my grandfather) b. 21 Jun 1861; Charles, b. Apr 1865, D. Apr 1865; Nettie J., b. 28 May 1866, and Marian about whom I have no other information.
Most of the family is buried in the Vanessa Cemetary. William Henry moved West to Alberta with his family. His first wife was Elizabeth Ann TACKLE. They had five children,
and when Elizabeth passed away in 1904, William Henry married my grandmother Louisa BUTCHER. Nettie J. married a man by the name of GORMAN, lived in Lansing, Michigan for many years, and I presume was buried there. I have found a number of family members from the second marriage of George William, but none are any wiser than I about the first family. If anybody can shed some light on this family, I would be most grateful. Thank you.
I have read a few posts on the board to do with a James Wade, of this area.

Would anyone know of Wade's who made cemetery momuments. Recalling from memory, there is a stone in Doan's Ridge Cemetery in Crowland, which was made by Wade's in Simcoe (?). I believe the stone is for one of the Wade's in Doan's Ridge. That is a long way to transport a stone, so I'm thinking the Norfolk Wade's were connected to those in Crowland.

Hi,

I am helping a friend with some family research. I have researched the Rice family in Oxford County but the Rices in Norfolk (that she is descended from) don't all seem to be connected.

She has a marriage certificate for her Grandfather Philip Rice of Glen Meyer, Norfolk County, Ontario that says: Philip Isaac Rice s/o Henry R. Rice and Mary Deyer married Violet Beatrice Marshall d/o Robert F. Marshal and Annie Hill.

She also has a death certificate for Henry Reuben Rice who was born July 8, 1852 and died Nov 24 1927. On the death certificate his father is given as Jesse Rice, his mother is not listed.

She found this marriage: Jesse Rice, 63, of Townsend, son of Josiah and Hannah Rice, born in Townsend, married 5 Sep 1876 in Simcoe, Martha Newell, 62, of Simcoe, daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Brown, born in New Jersey, U.S. Witnesses: Robert Hodgson, Simcoe; Lewis M. Kitchen, Townsend married by Rev. Aaron Slaght,
Wondered if this Jesse Rice was Henry Reuben Rice's father.

We would be grateful for any information to help our search.
Thanks,
Janis mcCahill
Ellis/Putman/Barnes

I've noticed that Mulford Putman [1817-1892] and supposedly his wife Elizabeth Barnes [-1855] had a son name Ellis Barnes Putnam who was reportedly born in 1856. My great grandfather William C. Putman was supposed to have been an uncle to Martha Ellis of Bay City, Michigan, meaning that he may have had a brother or sister that married an Ellis [a child possibly of Samuel Ellis, Jr., and Margaret, Peggy, Westbrook, of Woodhouse, Norfolk, Co.]. I have thought that William C. was the brother of Mulford Putman of Norfolk and Elgin Counties, Ontario. Why was a son of Mulford named ELLIS [with the middle name Barnes]? Elizabeth Barnes reportedly died in January 1855. Ellis Barnes Putman was born in 1856. This would seem to say that Ellis Putnam was not a son of Elizabeth Barnes, but the son of someone else possibly a Ms. Ellis. Any thoughts?

Mark.

I have looked on OCFA and there are no listings for Oakwood
Cemetery. Could someone please check the records for Nettie? She died abt 1927, and was born abt 1852/3, and I would like the exact dates if it is on her stone, or if such a record exists. I'm sure she is buried there, as I know her husband William Winchell was.
Also I believe her father is buried there as well, his name was William Rowley Burgar, born Nov 5 1827 and died abt 1853
so I would like the exact death date for him as well.
Thank you in advance for your time.
