Wisa Wasa School, North Himsworth

I'm looking for information on "Wissa Wasa" (it was spelled with two s's in the picture) school in North Himsworth Twp, Parry Sound District. My grandmother, who is still living at 100 years, attended this school in 1910 as a small girl. I have a photo of the school showing 27 students and the teacher. There is a sign in front of the students with the words, "Wissa Wasa - 1910". This was probably a country school, close to the town of Callander, as they farmed in the district and later moved into town where my grandmother's grandparents resided. Any information about this school would be appreciated.

I'm trying to find out the Concession & Lot where Arthur Patrick lived in Bear Lake abt. between 1916 and 1918. Does anyone know how I can find out the location of the land that he lived on? A clue - a granddaughter of Arthur's was shown the land in 1958 when she was only 11y and it was across the lake from some kind of camp. She can't remember where it was now. Thanks so much.
Bonnie Patrick
Elora, Ontario, Canada

Samuel James Alberta - looking for information

I'm primarily looking for information on Samuel James Alberta (also seen spelled Albearta), as well as his family. He is believed to have been born September 1899 to William and Anastasia Alberta in Port Arthur, Ontario. The 1901 and 1911 Census indicate the family was living in the Parry Sound District (Himsworth Township). At some point the family moved to New Liskeard, and at least the father (William) returned to Parry Sound in 1917. Samuel is believed to have worked briefly at an explosives factory before enlisting with the 162nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in January 1916. He was subsequently killed in action while serving with the 52nd Battalion on June 29, 1917.

Any information on Samuel in particular and the family in general would be greatly appreciated.

My Mother's name is Joyce McDonald presently.
However before she was married to my father for the second time, she was a Doucette married to a Leo Doucette. Also I am seeking any realtives that might me from descendants of Liza Ellen Edwards. She had a turkey farm and post office in Powassan,Ontario Canada. Her sister apparently was my mothers grandmother and her name was Susan Kidd before marriage, but after marriage it was Edwards. So e-mail me if you are a descendant of Doucettes or Edwards! Mom had cousins in that family of Liza Ellen Edwards! I would like to hear from you. Mom currently has three living sisters. One Doris passed away. So e-mail me if you are! Thanks.
I like people and would like to know if I have any canadian relatives that I could keep in touch with on this side of mom's family! God Bless You!

I was wondering if anyone is able to attend at the Parry Sound Public Library and would be willing to see if there are any newspaper (North Star) articles (BMD notices) for a great uncle of mine, Thomas Parr, Jr. and his family. I live in Hamilton and it would be about a 4 hour drive for me to go up to the library, and I don't want it to be a wasted trip. From what I understand, there is a name index available up to 1965.

From what I am able to determine so far, he was a railway man and lived in Parry Sound for a number of years.

Any help would be appreciated.

At least 2 children were born in Penetanguishene, Simcoe Co, Ont and some of the children were married in Byng Inlet, Parry Sound Co, Ont. Most records for the children were found in parish records of Wikwemikong Mission on Manitoulin Island (there was a "travelling" Jesuit there), but I haven't been able to find the marriage of Catherine and Alexander.
Johnston Family

The Mary I am looking for (my paternal grandmother) gave birth to my father, William Osborne Johnston in 1928 (later adopted by my great grand parents on Dad's side--Samuel George and Mary Margaret Allen nee Dodd) as Mary could not look after him--or I guess thought he'd have a better shot at life elsewhere. I have always thought my grandmother to be native and have been looking for confirmation. I always thought Mary's Mom was Rose James.Mary would most likely have been born just before the turn of the century--she was 'older' when she gave birth to my Dad--say maybe 30 or 35. She was rumoured to have had one other daughter that I know of and I think her name was Selma. If it wasn't her daughter, then it was the name of her sister.

When Mary gave Dad up for adoption (1929)--she moved to the Thessalon area which is close to Sault Saint Marie. My grandmother was with a man (before my grandfather) who was killed in the mines in Capreol and she met my grand father because he drove the horse and wagon that carried her husband's body from the train station in Byng Inlet. She was said to have lived on Station Road. I have searched cemeteries in both Byng Inlet and nearby Britt in person, and have found nothing.
I've been under the impression that Mary's Mom was named Rose James.
Anyone with information please email me jessica8080@hotmail.com THANKS
I am searching for any information on my mom's grandmother and her family. All that I have is what I remember being told as a child and bit's and pieces I've been able to pick up that seem to fit. Her maiden name was Euphemia Watts.
She had a sister and brother Frank Watts b.15 Jul 1879, Mary Watts b.24 Apr 1881.
Her married name was Sullivan, I don't have my great grandfathers first name. They had 4 children that I know of, John b. 10 Jan 1890, Clarence b. 8 Oct 1891, Edwin b. 12 Nov 1893, and my grandmother Lucille (Lucy) 15-16 Oct 1895. My mother was born in Parry Sound as well , she mentioned years ago something about a fire and all the records being destroyed, and I didn't think anything at the time. My mom is gone now and I think what a fool I was. I have no information on my moms side of the family at all and the sad part is there are no living relatives to help. What a twit I am.
Sorry for the long post.
If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreacite it, you have know idea.

Kindest regards,
Liza

email me at wenige_family_tree@yahoo.ca

Hi

my ancestor Bryan Bartle, a carpenter from Nottinghamshire, UK lived in the Muskoka/Parry Sound area from about 1872 until his death in 1874. His death (under the name Bryan Burtle) was registered at Parry Sound in December 1874. Bryan was drowned and his wife and daughter returned to England where his descendants still live. I wonder if there are any newspapers that might cover a drowning in the area or any other information that might help me find out a little more about him. He was living in Brockville at the time of the 1871 census so moved to the Parry Sound area sometime after that. His daughter was born in Muskoka in about 1872/3.
Thanks for any help you can give

Bob Parsons
Shropshire UK

I am descended from his son Thomas Nathaniel Rowe born 1870 in Whitby Twp., Ontario County, Ontario. I only have personal knowledge of one of my G-Grandfathers brothers Alfred or Fred Rowe born 1869. I have only recently discovered that the family had been living in Pickering / Whitby area in the 1871 Census of Ontario County, Canada and as a result I have also discovered a number of siblings of my G-Grandfather Thomas Nathaniel Rowe. I am looking for the decendents of Sarah E. Rowe born @ 1857, Ema Jane Rowe born @ 1861, John H. Rowe born @ 1865, Charles Rowe born @ 1867 and Alfred or Fred Rowe born @ 1869.
Albert Pollock of Parry Sound? James Pollock and Mary Ellen Hardys son

I am wondering where Albert Pollock is in the 1901 and the 1911 census? I cannot find them . It is possible that Harriette Drew( I have the marriage info. and her marriage to Robert Spring, also)was his wife. In the marriage information, for Albert, it said that his parents were James Pollock and Elizabeth Hardy. It should be Mary Ellen Hardy, but this is close. As Harriette was a widow, in Oct.1920, Albert has died proir to this time, but where and when? There were 2 children: James Frederich Pollock-born Nov.15,1905 @ Parry Sound , and Albert Thomas Pollock-born SPT.30, 1903, also at Parry Sound,Ont. I am hoping that there may be descendants, or someone who can assist? Thanks.
I was told his parents were from Co. Cork Ireland and he had siblings (May, Ira, Paul and Fred). He married a Lovida Dabbs in Dekalb, Tx. and had one child Henrietta Lyons abt. 1912. I don't have any further info on John but have lots of info on the Dabbs side of the family. I would like to find out more about my Lyons side.
Would appreciate help in finding information on the birth of Florence Mary Matthews in Ontario in 1904. Her parents names were Edward Matthews and Cecilia Labatte and they had a son, Edward William Matthews, born in French River in 1902. Between the birth of Florence and the birth of their next child Cecil in 1905 --the family moved to Calgary . Florence went on to marry Harry McLean --maybe in British Columbia --but again I do not have any info on marriage place or date. They had two children Edward and Barbara. I believed Florence died in the Trail, B.C. area.
Would appreciate any help you can provide on the birth, marriage and death of Florence.

Larry.
I am searching for any of the ancestors of this family or anyone that can help me with where John and Maranda were from originally. My great-grandmother was Sarah Lavina Wright. My grandmother had said that Sarah Lavina was "Pennsyvania Dutch", but other than that, I know very little. I know that the Wrights lived in Parry Sound, I believe McDougall Township. Sarah Lavina married Charles Tennant of Parry Sound. Mary Elizabeth married one of Charles' brothers. Any info on John's death would be appreciated as well.

John WRIGHT (BORN 1834) M Male Dutch 47 Ontario Farmer Methodist

Maranda WRIGHT (BORN 1839) M Female Dutch 42 Ontario Methodist

Mary Elisabeth WRIGHT (BORN 1865) Female Dutch 16 Ontario Methodist

Edward WRIGHT (BORN 1868) Male Dutch 13 Ontario Methodist

Sarah WRIGHT (BORN 1871) Female Dutch 10 Ontario Methodist

David Arthur WRIGHT (BORN 1875) Male Dutch 6 Ontario Methodist

Lila WRIGHT (BORN 1871) Female Dutch 4 Ontario Methodist
The US Census, Michigan, shows that he and his wife were married about 1880 (no idea where yet). Julie Thibodeau's, his wife, records show that she was a French Canadian catholic, born in Maskinonge, Quebec. I suspect that Joseph Emil(e) was also. Other than that I have no other information on his birth, his marriage or his parents. Any help is greatly appreciated

Looking for death records for James Payie (possibly William James) and Julie Ann (Julien) Payie, children of John Payie and Ann Whelan, who settled at Carling Twp. approx. 1875. Early census lists their surname as Paye.

James b. 1859, Clarence Creek last appeared on 1891 census with his brother, Nelson, under name Pye. He was still alive in 1895 as he was witness to an event at Parry Sound & Missions Church, Parry Harbour. I can't find him after this date.

Julie Ann b. 1857, Clarence Creek last appeared on 1881 census with parents & siblings under surname Paye with the family of Samuel Hare. (It has been determined that Samuel Hare was not the head of this household - someone recorded this information incorrectly).

Also looking for the parents of a William James Paye, died June 6, 1881, aged 24yrs. 6mos. He is buried at Hillcrest and although the headstone and Logan's Funeral Home list him as Paye, the Gravemarkers Gallery has him recorded as Pate. I have the records from Logan's and Hillcrest Cemetery but they have no other information.

Can anyone advise me on how to go about finding the identity of a William James Payie who is listed on ArchiviaNet Western Land Grants 1870-1930. The file reel number is listed. Does anyone know if this film will tell me who this person is?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Emma Olmstead Green

I am looking for descendents of Emma. She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Olmstead. She married Samuel Erwin Green in Parry Harbor around 1883. They had four children, all born in Parry Sound: Percy, born 1889, died 1897; Mary Evelyn Marshall, born about 1884, Christian or Tristram, born around 1887, and Samuel Clarence, born in 1896. Emma died in Parry Sound in 1923. There was no obit for her, and she is not listed as being buried in Hillcrest. I believe the family moved back and forth to Michigan. However, I have not found them in any census, Canada or the US since 1891.

Here's my situation: I am trying to figure out what happened to a member of my family who married and stayed in Canada when the rest of the family moved to the U.S. She is listed in her mother's obituary as "Mrs. Catherine Melsapp" but I think it's probably Millsap. I found a Catherine Millsap on the 1881 census in Muskoka and I am hoping to find something that can tell me her maiden name so I would know if this was the right person. Are there any web sites that might contain that kind of information in this area, or can anyone tell me where I could look (without actually traveling to Canada)? I also found a site that listed the day this person died and was buried (It was in Alberta) so if that information would help I have that available too.

TAYLOR, John Henry (b. 1848); PRESTON/WILKINS; Heckmondwike, Yorkshire > McKellar/Parry Sound

I am looking for ancestors or descendants of John Henry Taylor (b. abt. Apr. 29, 1848 - d. June 30, 1920), who grew up near Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, England. I believe John Henry's father was John Taylor (b. abt. 1795 in Heckmondwike).

The son, John Henry Taylor (b. 1848) married twice. His first marriage was to Hannah Preston on August 18, 1870, in Wicklow, Northumberland, Ontario. John Henry Taylor and Hannah Preston had two daughters, Sarah Hannah Taylor (b. in Ontario) and Rachel Ann Taylor (b. abt. 1873 in Batley, Yorkshire). Rachel Ann Taylor Married Archibald Robinson Jackson, and their family lived in Parry Sound.

Unfortunately, Hannah Preston died prematurely and John Henry Taylor married his second wife, Hannah Wilkins (b. 1850 in Irechester, Northampton), likely abt. 1878. They had four children: Basil (b. 1879 in Batley, Yorkshire), Fred Lawson, Albertha and Mary Louise (b. 1886). In 1881, John Henry Taylor lived with Hannah Wilkins, in the hamlet of Staincliffe (Lower) in Batley, Yorkshire, England.

In 1882, John Henry, his second wife and children travelled from Batley, Yorkshire, across the Atlantic to Canada and lived for some years in McKellar, in the County of Parry Sound, Ontario. The family then returned to Heckmondwike later on where John Henry worked in a woollen mill.

Fred Lawson Taylor (b. Aug. 12, 1881 in Heckmondwike - d. 1969) returned to Parry Sound, Ontario and married his wife there, Alice Lillian North on June 23, 1906. Fred L. Taylor and his wife then went to Saskatchewan to homestead in 1908.

If you have any information or are related, please provide whatever information you have.
