Ruth Ann,
Andrew Hunter and I tried to do some work on Thomas P yesterday.Firstly at his grave in Mt Pleasant...no Major on the marker.Very interestingly right next to him is George Patterson..also married to an Irish girl ...and he was born/died within a couple of years of TP.When these markers went up there was plenty of open space.
Then onto Stratford archives.Conclusively proved TP not part of either of the big Patterson families who have published trees there including Tom Festival founder.
Now thinking no so much Stratford although his son was big there.

Regards,

Bryce

Hello, Michael.
Some time ago you posted an inquiry about the Zimmerman family. While I can not help you with your question directly, I can certainly give you considerable information about my great grandmother, Anna Zimmerman, and her husband Christian Bier.
I have just begun working on my family tree and came across your query. I am having trouble myself getting information about Christian Bier's origins, so we share the same frustrations.
Please let me know what information you would like to have and I'd be happy to share what I have with you.

Glenn Bier
Box W-0, RR#2
Clarksburg, ON, N0H 1J0
519 599 6799
glennbier@canada.com

Hello - I'm not following any of your family lines, but stumbled upon something that may be relevant for you (or not) while searching some St. Mary's (Perth Co.), Ontario information about St. Mary's area soldiers in World War I. On one of the Ancestors at Rest web pages, St. Mary's and Surrounding Country Soldiers in WWI, is a scanned image from a St. Mary's newspaper page listing the area men who served in WWI. The list of transcribe names follows the image, as it is not readable. In the list is: "Du[hu]age, Capt. F. W." which _could_ be a mis-transciption of the name of one of the sons of your James and Mary Jane Rutherford Delmage. The web page is:
http://ancestorsatrest.com/perth_county_ontario/st.marys-sol...
If you suspect there is a link to one of your family line and wish to check the Canadian Archives records for WWI enlistments, the address to search military records is:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-909.006-e.h...
Be aware that there are mis-spellings/mis-transcriptions in the Canadian Archives database due to the "interesting" handwriting on the records, I suspect.
Sincerely, Jean E.
Thank you for the information.

I am related to the Hamiltons, my gg grandfather John Barr married Mary Hamilton a sister of Francis and William and they lived on Lot 5 Con.10 in Hibbert Township.

The only thing I have that Alice lived after 1871 is a marriage that I found on Ancestry.ca, it has an Alice Hamilton marrying a John Laing on June 6, 1873 in Usborne Township, they both resided in Hibbert Township. The only problem is it has Alice's mother listed as Mary, but that could have been a registration error since the groom mother's name was Mary.

Little errors like that occur, look at William Hamilton in the Hibbert Township History Book his wife is Nancy and they have no children. Then in the 1861 and 1871 his wife is Agnes and they have a daughter.

Thank you again for the information, I will continue searching because there is no other information on the Laing Family, they possibly moved to the U.S. After there Marriage.
My records indicate that Solomon and Mary had 10 children. My research also indicates that Solomon DELMAGE and Mary Doherty did not have a daughter names Susan unless it was the middle name for one of their other daughters.

"Dina" has been located in Canada using the name Dinah and Diana. There may have been trnscription errors for your "Dina". Dinah/Diana married a John LYNCH. They had 6 children in Canada.

They did have a daughter named Mary b. abt 1823(prob. Limerick)who married a James DOHERTY b. abt 1811 Ireland (prob. Limerick)d. 22 Oct 1883 Quebec, Canada. I believe that they were married in Limerick and emigrated to Quebec abt 1853 with Solomon and Mary.

I have 7 children for Mary DELMAGE and James DOHERTY in Quebec. This has been verifies thru the Drouin Collection and census records of Quebec.

Based upon this, can you make a connection for either James DOHERTY or Mary DOHERTY (wife of Solomon)? I would be interested in the Limerick connection to the DOHERTY families.

Regards,

Ray

Regarding Alice Hamilton daughter of Wiliam Hamilton and Agnes Morgan, I looked up the farm entry from the Hibbert Township History Book printed in 1996, (submitter unknown)

In the spring of 1849, two brothers, William and Francis Hamilton, from Dalhousie Townsip in Lanark County, came to Hibbert. Will leased this lot (Lot 8, Con 10) and Francis Lot 7. They built a cabin on William's lot and lived here together for a time. Will married first, before a Fullarton church congregation had been organized. Thus, a minister from London came to Hibbert to marry him and Nancy Morgan. They raised Devon Cattle.

They had no family and when Will died in middle age in 1879 he willed his farm to his nephew Francis Roger Hamilton, known as Red Frank. William's widow lived in part of the house, her inheritance was $200 a year. If she left the farm which she did later, it was to be $250 a year.

Looking at the 1861 census, the marriage year is wrtten in for William Hamilton and Agness as 1856, and "Allic" age is 5 yr. In the 1871 census Alice's age is 14. I could not read the 1881 census as the copy is too faint.

The cemetery inscription from Roys Cemetery Fullarton township for Agnes Hamilton is as follows

HAMILTON/Agnes/wife of Wm. HAMILTON/died Feb 11, 1908/ aged 75 yrs. 10 mos./In memory of William HAMILTON/who died/ Aug 9, 1880/aged 56 yrs. 5ms. 20 ds./

This may indicate that William Hamiton was not buried along with his wife. A Presbyterian Cemetery was on a half acre of Lot 11, Conc 11, before the church was relocated to the village of Cromarty, and today only a monument to the original Hamilton ancestor remains standing. Possibly Alice and William Hamilton were buried here.

From the Hibbert History of 1996
(From Scotch broth and Irish Stew ... A History of Hibbert Townsihp 1846-1996)

A log church was built here in 1852, on land donated by Francis Hamilton and the congregation built a stone church in Cromarty in the 1860's. It is estimated that there are 30 unmarked graves there, and there is no plan for the pioneer cemetery.

Do you have any evidence that Alice lived after her father William's death?

Heather Burrow
(I grew up on the farm where the pioneer cemetery is, but not related to the Hamilton family)

Agnes Gardiner born abt. 1833 in Canada, married to John S. Gardiner born abt. 1825 in Scotland,
in the Iowa 1885 census for Tama County, locality Lincoln.

Living with them were James Gardiner age 21 and Robert Gardiner age 16, both born in Canada
I really appreciate the prompt reply, I wasn't expecting it that quick. The info. you sent IS very helpful. We will be able to trace another branch of the family with it.My sister is doing our mothers side of the family and I'm doing our fathers. It seems that the Mc Dermott's,The Herron's, and the Walsh's are pretty closely relatated after everybody meeting in Stratford,Ontario.ARE YOU a professional researcher? The reason I'm wondering is we are also trying to trace my great grandmothers family. She was Antoinette Pauline Brodak, and was born in Breslau, Germany(now Wroclaw,Poland) Feb. 18,1874.Her parents were John Brodak + Ottilie or Ottilia Schneider or Schindler. Ottilie was born in Breslau,Germany in Nov. 1850.Through her our family goes back to France just after the revolution. That is the part of the "family tree" that is still missing. ANY suggestions there? Thanks Again Pat Mc Dermott

You have likely tried all these ideas.

If Agnes was buried in Canada and you know the death date is there any chance you can get the registration. With any luck the informant may give you a clue to Alice's whereabouts.
There would have to have been some kind of paper work to get a body across the border.

This is a supreme longshot. On 1881 census there is a John and Allace Gardner in New York, both b Canada. She is the right age and first child was born when she was about 17. Both children were born in US.
I am out of ideas and have no sites for US information.
You can join Ancestry free for 14 days and maybe get some information there.
Good luck.

If you look at the marriage of Agnes Hamilton and John Gardiner, he was living in U.S. at time of marriage. If they moved there after, that is why there is no death Registeration for either of them.

I think the marriage could be your Alice Hamilton.

Hibbert Tsp as you stated is in Perth County and it also borders Huron County where Alice was married to John Laing. Ingersoll is in Oxford County which is next door to Perth.
The marriage was registered im Usborne Huron which is next door to Hibbert Perth.
Sometimes the names Agnes and Mary are interchangeable. Also the registrar may just have gotten the name wrong. Also registrar may have mixed up the mother's names as the groom's mother's name was Mary.

Regardless of whether this is your Alice or not I cannot find them on any further census, births, or deaths.

There is a William Hamilton buried Cromarty Presbyterian, Hibbert Tsp. There is no Agnes but there is an M A and a couple of Marys.
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/search.php

William Hamilton died 1880 but I did not see a registration for either an Agnes or Mary on Ancestry.ca

I had found Louisa's obit by a simple 'Google' search.
All this time I had been searching around the Otsego Co New York area. Still looking for a burial spot near Perth- if a followup newspaper notice exists, I have yet to find.
May have been visited in Perth by two of her three children, James Edgar McMinn and Lucy McMinn Peters, although may not appear on a census. I now believe Clarence L mustered out of New York and died in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War.

If only families had known how important obit information would be to us all someday.....

Thanks to all for your help.

Dear Ray,

Although I am not directly interested (as yet) in the Ontario connection, I am researching the Doherty family and Delmages from Adare, Limerick, Ireland.

Since one of their children is named Dina, I was wondering if your Solomon Delmage's wife, Mary Doherty, was a sister of Dinah Doherty (later Smith/Smyth). Do you happen to know?

I think another sister, Susanna Doherty, married a Robert Delmage in Limerick in 1851.

I am related to another sister who married a Bovenizer in 1838.

In addition, I am also related to a Doherty brother, Gerald, who married a Mary Anne Sparling (They lived in Adare.)

I've been trying to trace the Dohertys for a while to no effect, but this Delmage/Dolmage connection gives me hope. Let's talk! Please contact me. Thanks. Faith
(By the way, the family search pilot record section now has Irish civil registrations that are somewhat helpful.)
Peter Mallo is my great great grandfather. His daughter Catherine Mallo is my great grandmother.

It is my understanding that Peter's wife Margaret Metzger (Metzer) was from Alsace Lorraine and that he met her at the time he was leaving for North America and presumably married her before they left.

My great grandmother Catherine (who was born in Canada) married Philip Wagner. Catherine and Philip's daughter Lavina told me that Catherine did not speak German but French, although the rest of the household could speak German.

So was either Peter French or Margaret French or French speaking? While I understood Peter's wife came from Alsace Lorraine it was never clear to me where Peter came from.

Mallo/Mallow is not a very German name? Is is originally from southern europe--Italy or Spain.

Bill Wagner, Vernon. B.C.

I truly don't know much, especially about the Doherty's. You found more than I knew by finding Lena's marriage to John Albert. There seems there must be a connection between James and your family if your family is connected to Ellen because it would be a huge coincidence for Lena's first husband to live so close to Ellen and then happen, two years later, to marry someone of the same last name. Bradley, Lena and Jack's oldest was born around 1915 and lived in Montreal. At some point, after having children, family lore says that he committed suicide. Spencer, the middle child was apparently in the Royal Navy in WWII. My grandmother, who lost her mother when she was only 10 months old, lived for a time with her Aunt Lena and Uncle Jack and was very close to her aunt especially. If I find out anything else I'll let you know! Thanks for writing back. Cathy

But I need a little more info on whose parents were Jack's??? I have found the marriage of Lena Norfolk and John Albert Doherty on 3 Feb 1913 in york and his parents were James Doherty & Sarah Bradley. I just need to connect James Doherty with my Doherty's. Give me a little time to try and figure this out, it might be another side of the Doherty's I haven't found yet. If you have any more info you can give me it would help.
take care
Cathy

Hi Judith,
Good to hear from you. I've had very few replies from family members. Are you looking for info on just George Mutton & family or on the whole Mutton family? I've gathered a fair bit of info on the family (some on George & Ellen) would love to exchange info. You can reach me at root4leafs@yahoo.ca. I believe I have received info on the family before they came to Canada. Thanks ....
Dear Barry,

Mary Ann and Thomas Mutton of Cornwall had 13 children. Of those, the fifth one was a son named George, born April 16, 1860 in Ontario. He died on May 14th, 1936 in Miami, Manitoba, Canada.

George Mutton married Ellen (sometimes spelled Helen) Belle Bolock in Winnipeg on November 30, 1905 and they had four children: Clara, Eva, George, and William Ivan Mutton.

I am William's only child.

I've found cemetery records showing that Thomas and "Mary A. Symons" are both buried at Trinity Anglican cemetery, in a village called Mitchell in Perth County, Ontario, Canada.

Kindest regards,

Judith Ellen Mutton
b. Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, 29 October 1952.

Hi Cathy,
I'm wondering what you know about the Dohertys and if they're connected with my family? In the 1901 census the Yeandles with mother-in-law Ellen Dogherty are living a few houses away from the Norfolks including a son Rueben. Rueben later married Lena Pilling (a great great aunt of mine who raised my grandmother). When Reuben died sometime after the 1911 census Lena married "Jack Doherty". I know Lena and Jack had three children, Bradley, Spencer and Riley and I know that Jack lived into the 1950's but otherwise I know very little. It seems possible, though, that Jack is connected with your Dohertys. By the way Lena's parents and older sister are buried at Avondale too. Any thoughts for my search? Thanks, Cathy

Looking for anyone who may be able to help with a George M. Ireland born Canada to a Scotch father in 1875/6. He left Canada in 1892 to go to the US and eventually settled in Tennessee. His family (descendants-specifically son and his family) went back to S.Perth to visit with relatives and visit family graves. George M. Ireland had a son George Ernest Ireland. The Ontario family that treated Tennesseans as tourists back in the mid 1950s took them to visit their ancestors. If anyone has any information, please feel free to contact me at ns_gates@yahoo.com. I am trying to get back in touch with these families.
