Pre-St Jean Baptiste church

The St Jean Baptiste church in L'Orignal was established in 1836. But people have lived in that area since before that time. So where did they get married or baptized before then? I've checked in the Marriage registers of Upper Canada, Eastern and Ottawa districts. No luck. The families I'm searching for were all catholics. One is John McKinnon who married Angélique Lalonde in the St Jean Baptiste church in 1841. John was born about 1818 in Caledonia Township so where would he have been baptized? He also had siblings born before him. One is Roderick.

I am researching the children and descendants of Philippe St Amand - b.1855 Quebec, lived in Renfrew county, Ontario where several of his kids were born. Particularly interested in his son Joseph Peter Francis St Amand, born 28 Jan 1888 Fort Coulonge QC, married Mary Hanson in Montreal. Mary died giving birth and Joseph Francis had to leave his three daughters in St Patrick`s Orphanage, Montreal. He returned to the North Bay area in Ontario where he had been living. My best friend is the grand daughter of Joseph Francis and would dearly love to connect with his family. I am doing her genealogy to help her find a path to these folk. All help most appreciated, especially in finding old photographs, the burial place of Joseph Francis St Amand ( North Bay or Pembroke?) and any living descendants.

I would be extremely grateful if someone could check the birth records at St-Jean-Baptiste in L'Orignal for a Fred, son of Adeline Hubert, who was born probably January 12, 1866, but possibly as late as 1873. I don't know the name of Fred's father; it is possible he was born out of wedlock. It is also possible his father was James Fraser, who married Adeline April 8, 1872. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me with my biggest brick wall.
Jim

Francis Johnston and Frances Johnston

I think I might be the great great grandaughter of Francis and Frances Johnston. Also known as Frank and Fannie. My Great Grandfather was also named Archibald (there are certainly alot of Archies in this family) son of Francis and Frances. He was born in Prescott on Dec 24/1840 and moved to Harvey Township which is north of Peterboro around 184l. He married Mary Jane Wallace Aug 9th 1865.Although there is no mention of Francis and Frances in that area, I can't imagine Archie moving there by himself when he was about a year old.
They had a daughter Frances born around 1867
Walter b. 1868
Robert b. 1870
Frederick b. 1873
Arnold Alvin b. 1875
Herbert b. 1880
I think there were a few more who probably died as infants.
I havent been able to place any native blood in this branch of the family but you only have to look at some of the pictures to know its there somewhere.
Alvin was my Grandfather who married Susannah Reber in 1904. They had a number of children, twins William and Marge being the youngest. William was my father.
Alvin died in a sanitarium in Toronto from TB around 1922 shortly after the twins were born.
Archibald and Mary Jane Johnston are buried in Sandy Lake Cemetery in Harvey Township.

GLENBURN Cemetery - Origin of Name

Glenburn Cemetery is where many of my kin are buried. I've been curious for many years as to the origin of the name Glenburn. I suspected Scotland and searched old family areas there with no success. Then I posted a query on an Irish site - instant success! Glenburn is a small stream in a valley in Magherafelt, Co. Derry, NORTHERN IRELAND. Just north of Magherafelt is another familiar name that was borrowed and used in Prescott Co. - Curran.

Families that settled in Prescott Co. and that were from the Magherafelt area include: Anderson, Derby, Johnston, & Wylie.

Here is a link to a map that I've posted. It gives the location of the original Glenburn:

http://www.pbase.com/cjmax/image/102176025

If anyone has anything more to add, let's hear it!

Cliff. I believe this is the Angeline that I am searching for with parents Joseph Aceti and Agnes Couvillion
(the spelling of both these names vary quite a bit in different documents).
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a place that was called Scotish River. I'm not even sure if it was in Ontario or not. In a parish register of Saint Jean Baptist in l'Orignal, I found that some of my ancestors lived in a place called Scottish River. I can't find it on any old maps. I would be grateful for any help in locating this place. It may not even have been an official name. My ancestors lived there around the 1840's
Thank you in advance for your attention.
Joanne

JOHNSTON, Francis, Robert, Archibald: Update

Y-DNA test results have come back confirming the suspected relationship of 3 Johnston brothers: Francis "Frank" (b. 1805), Robert "Red Robin" (b. 1808) and Archibald "Archie" (b. 1815), all born in Ireland. I call them the "Wee Three" with affection as all were taller than average with my gggrandfather, Red Robin, coming in at 6'-5" (and red hair).

According to oral family history their father may have been born in Scotland. We do not know his name. According to old and ancient Johnston/e family genealogy provided by a newfound cousin to whom we were linked by the Y-DNA tests we belong to the Johnstons in Poldean and some of our ancestors were members of the Old Gang of Wamphray (Scots of Danish Viking ancestry - Poldean is a 2,000 acre holding which left the family in 1742. It is some 4-5 miles south of Moffatt, Scotland). Our Johnston/e family left Ireland in the mid-1820's. One or more died on the crossing to Upper Canada, possibly including their father. A married sister stayed behind in Ireland with her husband. The 3 surviving brothers settled near what is now Pendleton, Ontario, Canada. They were very close to other families in the Pendleton area, such as Anderson, Wylie and Derby who came from the Magherafeldt area in Co. Derry, and it is suspected that they too may have come from the same locale.

In 1906 or thereabouts, my great grandfather, James "Jim" Johnston, moved his family from Pendleton to Johnston Road in Clarence Twp., Russell Co.. Although the barn and house burned down the land is still owned by one of his granddaughters.

The 1822 Assessment Roll indicates that George Johnson [sic] held the farm that Francis later bought in 1832. Could George have been kin and his surname miss-spelled? Anyone out there know? After 1832 George disappears. Anyone know what happened to him? In 1835 Thomas Johnson [sic] appears on the property and is listed as "owner"; however, land records indicate otherwise - Francis owned the land and was listed on the Roll too. Who then was Thomas Johnson, and where did he go? Another error with the surname? Probably.

2 of my Dad's aunts visited Ireland to find kin in the 1920's. None were found living. One aunt kept a detailed journal which included the tombstone inscriptions of our kin - they did find where they were buried and visited their graves. Unfortunately today no one knows where the journal is or where in Ireland the sisters visited.

I have been told that in Ireland the given name "Francis" was considered to be a Roman Catholic name and as such not in common use among Protestant Johnston/e families. Our ancestors were Presbyterian/Methodist. It is possible that the father of the Wee Three married a Roman Catholic woman. We do not know, but interestingly a couple of other Y-DNA cousins in the States with whom we have not been able to make a paper connection yet also have the name "Francis" used by their Protestant Irish ancestors.

If anyone has any information on our Wee Three or recognizes something about them from their research I'd appreciate hearing from you. I've been beating my head against those old Irish and Canadian bricks for too long (since 1979) - something has to give, and I hope that it isn't me... ;-)

Here is a link to some photographs of our ancestors, including my gggrandfather & gggrandmother:

http://www.pbase.com/cjmax/johnston_family_album&page=al...

Thanks,

Cliff. Johnston
"May the best you've ever seen,
Be the worst you'll ever see;"
from A Scots Toast by Allan Ramsay
My grandfather James Henry CHARBONNEAU was born in Plantagenet, Ontario. I'm trying to trace his father Joseph Xavier CHARBONNEAU and his mother Philomene BLONDIN. I have a will of Joseph Xavier CHARBONNEAU who died 1910 but the will does not give the legal description of the house that was sold. I'm trying to locate the property and to find where my great grandfather is buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dianne Skinner

Fraser-Hubert family problem?

My grandfather, Fred Fraser (sometimes spelled Frazier) was born in Canada in 1866, probably in L’Orignal. Fred’s parents were James and Olivine Fraser (Frazier). James (whose parents were Samuel Fraser and Margaret/ Marguerite Wilson) married Adeline/Adélaide Hubert (her parents were Olivier Hubert and Marie Lorraine Forget) at St-Jean-Baptiste in L’Orignal on April 8, 1872. Both Olivier Hubert and Marie Forget were also members of this church, so I suspect the Hubert family had resided there a long time. I believe the Fraser family may not have been from L’Orignal, however (possibly St. Johns, or Scotland). I had always assumed that James was Fred’s son, but note that Fred was born in 1866, while James and Olivine weren’t married until 1872. Further, I have government documents from the 1900’s in which Fred is listed as “my son” by Olivine, and as “your [Olivine’s] son” by James. I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that either Fred was the illegitimate son of James and Olivine, or (and I think this more likely) that Olivine was previously married, and bore Fred, before she married James. I can not find a birth certificate for Fred (but I believe birth registration I believe did not start in Ontario until 1869. Nor can I find a marriage certificate/document for Olivine other than that with James. If Fred was not James’ son, did he adopt him, and is that why Fred carried the name “Fraser”? I have hit a brick wall. If anyone can offer any look-ups, or provide any information or even thoughts on my dilemma, I would appreciate it tremendously.
Jim Oliver
Poaps family from Osgoode, Ontario

I am seeking to find info on the Papst surname Johan Adam Papst and his wife Eva Maria Hamm lived in Schoharie New York in the Mohawk Valley. They were forced off their land as they wanted to stay loyal to Britain. So they came
to Canada and settled in the Cornwall, Ontario area (Osnabruck Center). I am having difficulty with one of my Papst relatives I am trying to find proof that William Poapst my GG Grandfather was the older son of Rudolph
Poapst who was married to Ann Wood. Rudolph had a piece of land West 1/2 of Lot 12, Concession 6, Osnabruck Center that was purchased by John Adam Papst in 1822. John Adam worked the land until 1831 when he sold it to Rudolph Papst the one who is married to Ann Wood. I believe that Rudolph and Ann were married in Osnabruck Center. I have Ronnie Poapst who still resides in that area following up and trying to get some photos of this. Since I last spoke with Ronnie I have found out that the land that was owned by Rudolph has since become the Eamon farm. Funny thing is the John Adam bought the farm from a Eaton. Sometime between 1834-1835 Rudolph sold the land to Ira Hawley and along with the OTTO and WOOD families pulled up their stakes and moved to Osgoode hoping for a better life I guess. I believe William was born in Osnabruck Center but I am trying search that out now. I don't have the marriage date of William and Cynthia as of yet and I cannot find it at all. I do have a marriage ertificate for one of William Poapst children (Christine) and it shows William and Cynthia on that. If there is anyone that is searching the same names I would appreciate your help.
My GGF, James Frazier, married Adeline Hubert on April 8, 1872, at St. John the Baptist in L'Orignal. The marriage documents states that his parents were Samuel Fraser (deceased at time of wedding) and Marguerite Wilson Fraser, "both of this parish". They had two children, Fred (with a birth date of somewhere between 1869 and 1872) and Olivine Louise, born Feb 20, 1876, both in L'Orignal as best I can determine. Unfortunately, I can find no record of where James was born, what the actual birth date of Fred was, or anything about his parents Samuel and Marguerite, despite their probably having lived their lives in L'Orignal. If anyone can offer any look-ups or information about any of these Frazier/Fraser relatives, I would be most appreciative.

I have new info on the DUGGAN family I have been trying to locate. According to the 1881 census, all living together I show Mary age 90, Hannah age 50, Alice age 26, William age 23, Maggie age 19, Edward age 16, Michael, age 12, and Patrick S. age 4. I have no name on the father who either left or died sometime between 1877 and 1881. Maggie married George Stephen McDonald sometime after 1881. They may have had a son, Lem Mathew McDonald in 1883 in Canada. The family rumor is that they may have moved to California a few years later. Thanks, Mac

The cheesemaker and several men and boys are standing in front of a two story building which had been refitted to be a cheese factory. I believe the cheesemaker is Joseph Simes (b. 1866)who was from Leeds County; in the 1911 census he and his family are listed in Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co.
Looking for any information on the descendants of Joseph Normand, son of Charles Normand and Angelique Lefebvre, and Catherine Benard dit Bonenfant, daughter of Francois Benard and Catherine Nourri. Baptism and marriage records for Vaudreuil County, Quebec keep placing these people's residence as Hawkesbury. Joseph and Catherine (Benard) Normand had a son, Joseph, who married a Jeanne Chantal Seguin, daughter of Louis Seguin and Marie-Chantal Mallet. Joseph Normand II and Chantal Seguin were married in Glengarry County. There seems to be a strong connection with the Deschamps family as well. Children of Charles Normand and Angelique Lefebvre married into the Deschamps family. Also, a son of Joseph Normand and Catherine Benard married a Deschamps. Last, the son of Joseph Normand II and Chantal Seguin, again, married a Deschamps. Thank you for any help.

"C" Johnston, b. 1826

I was given the following information a few years ago and did not follow up on it as I wasn't sure if Francis Johnston was connected to my Robert "Red Robin" Johnston; however, some interesting questions have arisen lately.

"C. Johnston: b. June 12, 1826; baptised February 4, 1827; Lot 21, Conc. 9, Plantagenet."

At that time George Johnson [sic] owned the farm designated in the records. In 1832 his farm was bought by Francis Johnston whose wife was Frances. They had lived on the farm though for a previously undetermined number of years, so "C" may have been their child.

Any and all information that you may have on "C" Johnston will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cliff.
Northern Irish immigrants 1820

I'm hoping for some help from a local historian. I understand that Peter Robinson settled a group of Irish Catholics from the southern part of Ireland in the Prescott County area in about 1823-24. I'm wondering whether there was another organized settlement of Ulster Protestants in the years immediately preceeding the Robinson group. I have an ancestor from Armagh, Richard Allen, who settled near L'Orignal apparently around 1820 and I'm trying to ferret out the circumstances of his arrival and settlement. I have scanned C Thomas' book "History of the Counties of Argenteiul, Quebec & Prescott, Ontario" but, unfortunately, did not find it helpful for this particular question. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could provide some information or suggest some alternative publications on immigration to Prescott in the very early 1820s. Thanks!

I am looking for the final resting place of two of the McDonald boys that probably died in North Plantagenet. Steven was born after 1851 and died before 1861. Matthew R.V. about 1856 and died before 1871. In 1851, the family lived in Charlottenburgh, Glengarry Co. In 1861 till 1879, the family was in North Plantagenet on Lot 24 of the 6th concession. One or both of the boys may have been buried on the family farm if that was legal or accepted at the time. These two boys are the only part of this family I have been unable to locate.

Ontario in 1849.
I noticed from the Prescott website that no Catholic Churches are listed for this time period. Was there an early Catholic Mission in this area or where might one Baptize a child in this time period.
Any help would be appreciated.
Lawrence

My gggrandfather and his wife, Hugh and Sara McKillop, came from Ireland to Prescott County where they lived in East Hawkesbury. I would love to find any information I could about them. I don't know if they had children who lived in the area. My ggrandfather moved to Bruce County. I know almost nothing about his family.
