I found a death certificate for a Barbara Ann MacKenzie, you didn't say if you have that info about your grandmother, this lady was born in 1852. Its not clear at all so I can't make much out. I've attached it for you to see just in case its her. I noticed Roberta's post and was trying to see if I could help her since I know the area well where he family was living and found this death certificate so I thought I would post it for you.

Donna

Yes. That is him and his wife was Mary Flynn (Can't find maiden name anywhere). He died Jan 24, 1899 and she died Oct 1910. Both are buried at St. Michael's cemetery.

I have hit a brick wall trying to get back to Ireland. I have all theirkids births, marriages and death records and nothing has Mary's maiden name. The best I can find is he was from Waterford or Cork and she was from Cork on one of the kids' baptism church records.
I was hoping the employer angle might give me something new to research but all I know is that he was a mariner/sailor.
Thanks.

The Maurice who is 28 is his son, the bill poster.

The father's last name is spelled wrong - listed as Maurice "Flyin" and he is a sailor. The previous reply to my message made me go back and look. I see now that it says employer or wage earner and he is a wage earner. Do you the "KO" in the employer column was just a note made by a transcriber or someone?

Thanks for your help.

I am waiting till I can better utilize it, when I have more time~~famous last words!!! I work and my husband is undergoing chemotherapy so we stay pretty busy. I just try to do a little along.
I have had a quick look through 1881 Canada census but have not found a Barbara MacKenzie with the siblings you mention.

Was Barbara Ann born in Canada or did her family emigrate from perhaps Scotland? Canadian Censuses are on line but as I have only dial up it is very slow to down load the images. Passengers coming into Canada can be found on ancestry.com

Roberta

Looking for MacKenzie connections. My grandmother Barbara Ann was born 1868(I believe)and she had siblings Robert James, Isabella, Jesse...trying to find her connections. She was supposed to have gone to school at a convent called St Ann's(sp)? When she married, she came to Florida after living for a few years in Indianapolis. If you have any info to share, I am anxious to get some info from Canada!
There were some Symonds, who were cousins of theirs. I remember a Wilford/Wilfred.
Barbara

I found a Maurice FLINN, age 28, living in Toronto in 1891 with his wife Maggy and daughter Ethel but he’s a labourer. Is he your ancestor?

There’s no column in the 1891 census that asks for ‘Employer’. There are two columns that ask whether the person is an Employer or a Wage Earner.

The column for employer says "KO" and I notice it is the same for other sailors.

Does anyone know what that stands for?

I am pretty certain she would not have listed them. The reason for her name change was to hide the fact that she was born to them at all. My grandfather was apparently equally concerned that his family would also abandon them if they found out her heritage.

Thanks for your help though.

You should try and contact the Registrar General of Ontario for a copy of their marriage record. As next of kin, your father can apply:

Office of the Registrar General
189 Red River Road
P.O. Box 4600
Thunder Bay, Ontario
Canada P7B 6L8

Tel: 416-325-8305
1-800-461-2156 (toll-free in Ontario)

This should give Rhoda's parents' names (if she listed them) and if she was indeed married as Carroll or Chernoff.
Sorry, that should have been St. Clarens Avenue. Also found the following in the archives of the Toronto Star issue dated 15 September 1942:

The following are Toronto names in today's Dieppe casualty list as announced -- Missing - Royal Canadian Engineers -- DYE, Harold Forbes, sapper. B25417; Mrs. Rhoda Dye (wife), 82A Margueretta

From the issue dated 26 September 1942:

Word has been received by Mrs. Rhoda Dye, Macklem Ave., that her husband, Sapper Harold Forbes Dye, Royal Canadian Engineers, is a prisoner of war. He enlisted in September 1939, the day before Canada declared war, and went overseas in May 1940 with the 2nd Field Co., RCE. He attended Dewson Street School and Bloor Street Collegiate and worked in Timagami prior to enlisting.

Note: Timagami is likely Temagami in northern Ontario.

May 15, 1945:

Defence headquarters has issued three new lists, totalling 559 officers and other ranks freed by the Allies in Germany.....DYE, Harold Forbes, Spr; Mrs. Rhoda Dye (wife), 591 Sherbourne Street, Toronto.

Chernoff of Toronto
I am searching for information about my grandmother. We believe she was born as Rose Marie Chernoff, around 1916. However, it is our understanding that she changed her name to Rhoda Marion Carol (or Caroll) before she married my grandfather.

She developed Alzheimer's through out her life so could not share much about the truthful story when it was revealed (at age 65) that she was not who she had always said she was.

Investigations revealed the Chernoff name and the vague story we have is that her family disowned her for dating (and eventually marrying) a man who was not Jewish.

There is also some story about her family actually coming to Canada by ship by way of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil when she was possibly only an infant.

They apparently settled in Toronto where they ran a bakery when my grandmother was a child.

Any info appreciated.
Hello there,

I have just discovered that an ancestor of mine left Scotland in 1928 to start a new life in Canada. With him was his wife Mary Whiteman (nee Mooney) and their children, William Henry Whiteman and Mary Mooney Whiteman. Ont he passenger list it states that they were going to an address in Toronto.

Robert Gardiner Whiteman was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1894. Not sure when his wife was born, but his children were both born in Greenock, William, 1925 and Mary 1926.

Does anyone know how I may be able to trace this family in Canada, or indeed trace any relatives that are still living?

Many thanks

Hi: Goes the certificate of death provide the full date of death because I can try and find a obit by using the full date I've tried searching with just 1923 and its not coming up with anything. The obit might confirm if her husband died prior to her which could narrow down a date of death for him. Donna

Here's a link with a little info on the City Directories however it doesn't really answer your question but it has a little more on the directories I would guess that someone from the archives of Ontario would be able to answer your question, the directories are a great source of info. I've also provide you with the archives of Ontario reference e-mail they might be able to provide you with a better answer than the Toronto Reference Library I don't really find them very helpful with questions like this. Hope this helps.

Donna

http://www.toronto.ca/archives/city_directories.htm

reference@ontario.ca (Archives of Ontario e-mail)

Thank you very much for that.

I'm pretty sure that #4, Andrew J., is mine, as I have several other directory entries for him in other years.

Does 'mother Beatrice father Albert' mean he was in the same household as these people? If relationships aren't given is it possible that Beatrice was his wife?
