Am looking for help in searching for Reuben S. Tink and his new wife, Jennie (Couch) Tink as a married couple on the 1911 Canadian census and who both may have lived in the Wentworth County area after being married in Huron County, Ontario.

Head: Reuben S. Tink, b. 1861, Flamboro, Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada

Wife: Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane (Jennie) Couch, b. November 22, 1869, Exeter, Usborne Township, South Huron County, Ontario, Canada

Children: unknown

Marriage: February 16, 1904, Huron County, at Exeter, Reuben was widower 43 years of age and Jennie was widower 35 years of age at time of marriage

Jennie Couch appears on the 1901 Hibbert Township, Perth County, Ontario, Canadian census living with her parents Joseph & Hannah Couch; her first name Jennie is spelled incorrectly as Jimie (daughter). She then marries Reuben S. Tink in 1904 in Huron County; a neighboring community.

Jennie had a previous marriage January 26, 1887 to James Bell, b. 1845 who also had a previous marriage in November 18, 1864, Perth County Ontario to Margaret Hamilton, b. 1844

Reuben S. Tink (other possible spelling Tinck) had a previous marriage May 27, 1895 to Jessie McKenzie, in Essex County, but had also married the same Jessie McKenzie back in October 12, 1887 in Essex County and also had a previous marriage before that to Hannah Brown August 5, 1879 in Wentworth County. Reuben and Hannah (Brown) Tink had one known child together, Eliza Whilemena Tinck, b. October 3, 1879 Wentworth County

Reuben S. Tink is said to have worked on the railway in Wentworth County, for a railway company based out of Galveston, Indiana, USA.

Regards,
Dan Kennedy
London, Ontario
couchresearch@gmail.com

Jarvis family in Wentworth Ontario

I have recently discovered that some of my ancestors emigrated to Ontario Canada in the early 1900s.
I have found the family on the UK census in 1901 and I have found William Hugh Jarvis died 21st May 1914 in Hamilton Wentworth Ontario. So there is only a small window to search.
I believe I may have found 2 records, which are not 100 percent correct but likely to relate to my family.
There is an entry on the 1910 census for district 135 Wentworth. This shows Hugh Jarvis - Baker and Elizabeth Jarvis - Tailoress. Elizabeth's date of birth is not accurate but I do know that William Hugh Jarvis was a baker in the UK.
The other record relates to his son, Albert Jarvis. I have found his marriage to Annie Runciman 13 Feb 1915 in Wentworth. Annie's home address is shown as Stoney Creek which matches with the census record mentioned above. (Annie was also born in UK) Albert's occupation is also shown as a baker, so maybe they had a family business.
Albert reported his father's death so I don't know if this is an indication that his mother was already deceased.
Any information about this family would be much appreciated as I am resident in the UK and don't have a clue as to where to look next.
Many thanks
Lynda

Mitchell Family from Scotland

I am seeking information on four MITCHELL brothers I believe emigrated from Scotland to Canada between 1901 and 1912. they were John Mitchell born 1881, Alfred Forbes Mitchell born 1883 Walter Farquharson Mitchell born 1885 and Douglas Edward Mitchell born 1891. Douglas and his mother Margaret McLean Mitchell arrived in Canada in 1912 aboard the ss 'Empress of Ireland". Alfred and Walter were already there. Alfred I believe was living at King William St., in Hamilton in 1926. I think they are all buried in Woodland Cemetery but I do not have access to the full inscriptions. Any help would be appreciated as I have been trying to trace this family for a long time. I have extensive information on the Mitchell side of their family which I would be delighted to share with any 'cousin'!

Tish

Watlings in Binbrook

Hello,

I've been having an extreme amount of difficulty finding the mother of my great-great-great grandmother, Pauline Watling. The surname was typically spelled Whatling in Canada, but Watling in England. I've also seen Whatlong, which might have just been a transcribing typo, on the 1871 Canada census.

Pauline's father was John Watling, born c1815 in Darsham, Suffolk, England, and he came to Canada and had at least three daughters. His wife died c1864 either in Caistor Twp, Binbrook, or possibly elsewhere which makes this hard. I also do not know where or when John passed away. John remarried a Mary Eilson, and with his parents names I was able to trace his line quite far back in England. However, I still lack Pauline's mother's real name.

I have had no luck with census or immigration records to track when John Watling came to Canada.

Is anyone else researching this family? Pauline married a Frederick John Benner (c1860) and had six children.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Mike

Her maiden name was Elizabeth GIBBONS and her married surname was Elizabeth ALLEN or ALLAN (or other spelling); I assume she married before she emigrated. At some point, probably in the 1920s, her address in Canada was 7 Huron Street, Hamilton, Ontario. She may have had children Charles and Hilda. I would love to hear from anyone who has any information at all about this family! Jude.

I am seeking an obituary for Rev. Emerson Bristol, Methodist, who died of typhoid fever in Tilsonburg on July 9th, 1895 at age 82. Although he died in Oxford county, Rev. Bristol spent most of his life in Wentworth county. I am hoping that his popularity (at least twelve boys named for him) combined with the tragic circumstances of his death might have resulted in a newspaper article. Can somebody with access to the libraries out that way check the local papers for me?

I am researching the 2nd York Militia, also known as the Burlington Heights Militia, which was under the command of Col. Richard Beasley at the time of the War of 1812. Other Beasleys also served in this regiment. Does anyone have a family tree for this family so that I can work out the relationship between Richard, David, and Henry Beasley? Richard Beasley married Henrietta Springer and farmed on Burlington Heights and Dundurn Park. When did Richard arrive in this area and where did he come from? Other biographical material would be helpful.

I am searching for any descendants of the Book, Drummond, Havens, Shaw, and Babcocks from Ancaster, Wentworth County and Brantford, Brant County. In particular I am searching for descendants of George Drummond(b.1818 in Ireland or Scotland) who married in 1845 in Ancaster to Emma Book( Amy Shaw according to the marriage register). I am looking for verification that Emma Book's parents were indeed Adam Book( son of John Book and Anna "Charity" Zimmerman) and Dorothy Shaw{daughter of Michael Shaw and Freelove Culver) as I have not been able to locate a birth record for her born in Ancaster in 1826. Hoping that some family member might have an old family bible with documentation on this or any other source. Children born of this marriage were Mary Jane, Martha, Sarah Alice, George H., Margaret, Isabelle, Ezra, William H, Georgina Dora Drummond.Martha Drummond married John Havens and they lived in Brantford Ontario and had 6 children: Walter, Edith, Rhoda Elizabeth ( who married William Franklin Babcock) John , Robert Elsworth, and Edward Thomas Havens.I would appreciate it if anyone can help .

This is from another list I'm on. Sue

Help is needed by all serious genealogists to index images that can be
viewed free of charge. For those of you who are unaware of this vast
project, the majority of the films in the vast collection of the Family
History Library are being digitalized for display free on-line. Those
records need to be indexed. For close to two years, volunteers have been
indexing many records but volunteers are needed to continue this project.

Some of those already indexed projects can be viewed on a pilot site that
can be reached here:
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#...

New information is being added almost daily so be sure to check back often.

If you want to volunteer to index various records, you can do so here:
http://www.familysearchindexing.org/en/home/home.jsf?pname=h...

The more volunteers the faster records will be made available on-line.

It doesn't take long to do a page of records.

Current projects include those in English, Spanish, French, German and
Italian.

Doing this can help you in your own research as you become familiar with old
handwriting and various forms.

Leslie Vaughn

The witnesses were John Davis and Isabella davis - which may have been parents or siblings.

I'm also interested in finding out how my Morden Great Grandfather (William Crooker, born 1856) acquired the "crooker" name. The 1881 census records show mordens and crooker families as close neighbors, however I hope to learn of a marriage link. Thanks for any help you can offer

Her sad life ended 1881 FEB 10th at the Toronto Lunatic Asylum. More information upon request.

It seem inconceivable that Jane Thompson would come to Canada by herself.
Lynden, Ontario, Newspaper Article-1944

First of all, I don';t believe that the article is correct saying that Barnabas was from England. If he was, then Mary would have been as well. Maybe his father or another ancestor came over from England and it was confused in the telling.

I just found that article from the Brantford Expositor dated March 18, 1944.
It states:
LUMBERING WAS ONCE LEADING INDUSTRY OF LYNDEN DISTRICT
By Jean Hall Waldie

When Barnabas HOWARD arrived in Lynden Dstrict in the late 1820's, he built a fairly large home with the intention of providing food and shelter for weary travelers in that sparsely settled district where no other accomodations were available and he also opened a store in one room. The HOWARDs and VANSICKLES were among the earliest pioneers of that region and their names are perpetuated in the HOWARD Cemetery and the VANSICKLE Cemtery in the Village.

Barnabas HOWARD, who came originally from England, came to this country from the State of Pennsylvania, settling in West Flamboro and later taking up lots 13 and 14 in the First Concession of Bverly Township, Wentworth County. At that time there was no public cemetery in the district set aside for burial purposes.

Oddly enough, Barnabas himself was the first settler to be buried at Lynden. His tombstone which provides the information that he was born on October 9, 1791, and departed this life on August 20, 1835, is to be seen in the Howard Cemetery, where are also to be found headstones bearing the names of members of the HOWARD family, as well as the ROUS, RAMEY and other pioneer families. This cemetery is located opposite the site of the First United Church.

John HOWARD was appointed as the first Postmaster at Lynden, with Henry HOWARD his assistant. The station has recorded that the mail was carried by stage between Hamilton and London and that on the "down trip" it was timed at Lynden for 11p.m., but that it was sometimes 2a.m. befoe it arrived.

POST OFFICE OPENED

Up until the time a postoffice was opened at Lynden in the 1840's, the nearest one had been at Dundas. A meeting called for the joint purpose of naming the settlement and opening a post office and settlers from miles around assembled in the little log schoolhouse (unreadable word next) south of the late Governor's Road nearly opposite the site where many years later was to stand First United Church.

The suggestion of Jeremiah BISHOP that the place be called Lynden met with immediate approval and the name was adopted.

Benony VANSICKLE, Sr. another of Lynden's first settlers, was the son of Rinar VANSICKLE and was an emigrant from the State of New Jersey in the early 1800's. He first lived on the eastern boundaries of Beverly Township, later taking up land in and around Lynden. He is described as being an enterprising man, with an unconquerable ambition. He amassed considerable fortune with a large acreage of land, including seven farms, which he left his seven sons. His wife was Margaret KITCHEN.

Lot 12, Concession 1, of Beverly Township, had first been taken up by Isaac BLASDELL, known as Deacon BLASDELL, who was to figure importantly in the religious life of the settlement. This property was later purchased by Benony VANSICKLE.

BUILT FIRST SAWMILL
Benony set aside a plot of land for the VANSICKLE Cemetery. The piomeer also built the first sawmill in the district, but it turned to be a scene of tragedy, for his eldest son, (can't read name), a lad of 18, was killed in a boiler explosion in the mill and others had narrow escapes.

The Seth VANSICKLE homestead on the Indian Trail, built more than 115 years ago, was built to endure and was to remain through the years a spot of historic interest. It's 60-foot long timbers, about 12 inches square were hewn, not sawn, from tall forest trees.

Lumbering was years ago the leading industry of the Lynden district, but mills had been built on the creek at Troy long before those at Lynden. Shingles were an important product.

The advent of the Great Western Railroad about 1855 brought an influx of buisness towards the tracks and the leading places of business grew up there. For a short time, the station was called VANSICKLE's, but was a little later changed to Lynden. Rufus DODGE became the firsst station agent. he was engaged in the lumber business and also opened the first "liquor shanty." Other station agents included Charles MORRISON, John WADE, and John BERRINGTON.

Extensive Lumber Trade

It is said when the railroad was opened and afterwards, more lumber was shipped from Lynden than any other station on the line and that at one time as many as 16 saw mills were operating day and night within four miles of the station. Buyers came from New york, Albany and other places in in the United States to purchase lumber. The price at the time was about $10 per thousand feet, but the financial crisis of 1857 and 1858 wrought havoc with the prices, some carloads selling for as little as $4 per thousand feet. Large quantities of spars were included among the produce of those days. Often great piles of wood were burned to get rid of it, in order to clear the land.

Blacksmithing and wagon making were other industires of the early days,. While Benony VANSICKLE's sawmill was in operation about the late 1840's, William WEAVER had a wagon shop; Robert L. PATTERSON, a shoe shop; Peter HATHAWAY, a blacksmith shop; and John HOWARD, a small store. William S. WILKINS later purchased the mill at South Lynden.

Jeremiah CORNELL started business with a small store in South Lynden and then, in co-operation with his brother, Daniel, branched out in a large dry goods and grocery store, but it was later destroyed by fire. Vincent CORNELL was another South Lynden storekeeper.

W.P. DODGE kept the first harness shop in North Lynden; William WILSON the first tailor; Edward LEDYCOAT, one of the first blacksmiths; William BARRETT, an early wagonmaker and Joseph BRADWIN kept the Lynden Pottery.

Erected Oil Refinery

Wesley F. ORR and James E ORR built a store, but later the former went into the lumber business, becoming finally Mayor of Calgary, Alta., and the latter erected an oil refinery at Lynden but it was destroyed by fire.

Other old-timers who took part in the business life of the Village in years gone by were Robert WOOD, a harness maker; William CLEMENT, awho built an extensive woolen factory; William MAY and Somers ATKINSON, Storekeepers and lumber dealers and William VAN NORMAN, who had a wagon shop.

Well over a century ago, the first little log schoolhouse was built in the Lynden settlement, a a low-ceilinged structure measuring 18 by 22 feet. This was to serve for diverse purposes, for not only was it used as a school, but it was also called into service for church and Sunday School purposes, for public meetings and for court proceedings. Even before that time, Mrs. Daniel BLASDELL is reported to have kept school, the first public school at Lynden, about the 1820's.

Many interesting characters were to be found among the early teacher, as witness the recollection of the late Henry HOWARD in regard to one James BROWN, an Irishman and rigid disciplinarian. "If he thought a boy was bad," Mr/ HOWARD wrote, "he would make him stand on one foot a certain length of time; if he caught two boys whispering, he would take a short stick and make them hold it with their teeth, one hold of each end.

DEBOW surname in Hamilton

John DeBow was born circa 1880 in Ontario Co., NY in the Finger Lakes District near Canandaigua. His parents were Francis DeBow (1847-1931) and Susan (Ward) DeBow (1857-1936). At some point John emigrated to Canada and made his home in Hamilton, Ont. He is thought to have married twice (1. Mae 2. Bernice; surnames unknown) and is known to have had a son, Ronald DeBow, who lived in the Bramalea/Brampton area of Peel Co.

John's mother, Susan Ward DeBow, was my grandfather's younger sister. I am working on the Ward family tree and would appreciate any information (BMD, census, burial site, etc.) for John, Ronald, and their families. I will gladly share the tree with DeBow descendants.

Sharon
Welland, Ontario

In oOttawa he was a contractor/carpenter apparently responsible for building some banks, schools and other public buildings. I am hoping to find any connection to the Hamilton area. His eldest son Willie would have been born around 1857+/- 1 yr and my grandfather George jr wpuld have been born 1864+/- 1yr.
He may have also got married to Catherine while in Hamilton, she died in Ottawa 1n 1880 and I have no information on her age maiden name or birthplace
Any leads or info would be greatly appreciated.
Info on George sr. was obtained from obituary article publised in Ottawa
Bill Stockand

I am looking to locate anyone knowing any furriers that were located in the Dundas area in the 1960's. I am searching for a possible family member that was the son in a family furrier business. I believe they closed it when fur sales slowed because it became unfashiobnable. The son I am trying to locate may have had had three daughters. He went to private school and came from a Jewish family. It may have been called Gorden (Gordon) and Sons Furriers. Thank you for your assistance.

Just for the sake of leaving a record on this board, I live here
in this former County of Wentworth, have many friends and
neighbours who know my hobby, the search for Hessian
soldiers of the American Revolution, and particularly those
who settled in our region. Only one comes to mind at this moment,
but this one sure has a large number of people
who can count him as their ancestor CHRISTIAN ALMAS,
his name was first spelled Almost, he came as one of the
first settlers to Ancaster, Upper Canada.
There was also the son of a Hessian Doctor who came here
rowing all the way from Albany, N.Y., his name was Henry
van Wagner. He came to Saltfleet Ts., There is a popular
beach still named after him. If you check the Rootsweb
Message Board for Van Wagner, you will find much about
him, including a contribution of mine.
John Helmut Merz, author of 'Hessians of Upper Canada"
see my webpage http://www.cgocable.net/~hessian

Can anyone help with a look-up or explain this problem:
I access the 1851 Canada census via ancestry.com. For most areas in Ontario I can get both the agr. summary that lists the male head and his crops, etc. and also A NAME BY NAME analysis of people in the household. However for the Binbrook area I seem to get only the agr. summary. I am interested in finding out who is listed in the household of Peter Snider, Binbrook, Concession 3, Lot 2 100 acres. Also his connection, should anyone know, to the Frederick, Abraham, Henry, and William Snyders of Concession 4, Lots 1,2,3,4, & 5. Is the Binbrook census (name by name) missing? Thanks

There is a Samuel BURNS on both the 1871 and 1881 census in Flamborough East. The age, ethnicity, religion and occupation are all correct to be my Gr. Grandfather. His son, my Grandfather, emigrated from Larne, N. Ireland to Ontario, Canada and I always wondered why. Perhaps this is his father. Does anyone have additional information about this Samuel BURNS. He was married to a Jane on the 1881.

My Samuel BURNS was born about 1827 in Co. Antrim of Scottish (Presbyterian) descent. He was married in 1850 to Susan SIMS in Co. Antrim, then moved to Glasgow, then disappears after being on the 1861 and 1871 Glasgow censuses, as do their children. The Samuel BURNS on the Flamborough censuses was born abt. 1827 in Ireland, is Presbyterian and a laborer.

Thank you for any help, this might just be a shot in the dark.

Best wishes,
Judy

Spofford/Spafford in Wentworth County?

I have a Richard Williams m to Sophia Spofford (they were originally of Connecticut and Vermont). It would seem that their son George married Catherine Jones in Wentworth County about 15 Dec 1838. [date of their marriage bonds and witnessed by William Spofford, his relative]. I believe their daughter Martha Williams who married Duncan MacGillivray was my great grandmother but have not been able to find reliable sources to clarify the relationship. Martha's death certificate simply says d/o George & Catherine Williams. Having checked every Williams & Jones I could find in numerous databases and other sources has not helped so I am now trying to find William Spofford. Has anyone run into individuals with the Spofford/Spafford name in their search of Wentworth records?
