Anniston, AL, cafe near Southern RR station

We are looking for the name and other details of a cafe located in Anniston -- on 4th Street, near the old Southern Railway Station in the 1950's.

One family member thinks it was named "The Pie House" but other family members do not recall this name.

The cafe was within easy walking distance of the train station -- my father worked for Railway Express and sometimes we would go to the station to meet him and he would allow the children to walk to the cafe and wait for him.

Thanks in advance.

Elizabeth O'Shields Harrison of Calhoun County, Alabama and her mother Teresa O'Shields aka Tracy O'Shields of Spartanburg Co,SC

The 1790 Spartanburg District SC enumerates three O’Shields. Two are recorded as
O Shiel and one as Sheal.

Sarah O Shiels is listed on page 24 column 1 with 1 male under the age of 16 and four females.

The above Sarah O Shiels or Osheals (O’Shields) is Sarah Walker, the widow of Daniel Osheal. She is the mother of John Osheal, Jethro Osheal, and Teresa “Treesy” or “Tracy” Osheal. The male child under the age of 16 is Daniel O’Shields born ca 1785 who grew up to marry a woman named Rhoda.

Four households away from Sarah O Shiel is listed the household of
John Oshiel with 1 male age 16 and up and 1 female age 16 and up.
This is the household of John and his wife. At this time they had no children who were living.

On page 26 column 2 is listed Jethro Sheal. This is Jethro Osheal, the father of Elizabeth Hewitt.

In the household are 1 male age 16 and upwards, and 1 male under the age of 16, and 2 females. The male child in the household is Henry Osheal.

In a review of Osheal Oshields in the Spartanburg County, SC census records, it can be seen that Henry was born between 1781-1790. He was born ca 1789.

1800

In the 1800 Spartanburg District, SC census John Oshields and Jethero Oshields are listed on pages 197B and 199B.

On page 199 is the enumeration of Creesy Osheilds. In the past I assumed that Creesy stood for Lucretia, however I have determined that in fact this was actually Teresa “Tracy” Oshields. Teresa’s given name can be found as Teresa, Theresa, Teresy, Treesy, Treasy, and Tracy, as well as this entry as Creesy. In this household is listed 1 male under 10, 1 male age 10-15, and 3 females under 10, 1 female 26-44, and 1 female age 45 and over.

Her neighbor, apparently next door neighbor, was one Nancy Wooten, enumerated with no adult males in her household only 1 male under 10.

It is interesting that according to Cecilia Johnston Harrison, born in 1827, who was the daughter in law of Elizabeth Oshields Harrison (wife of Tyree Harrison) and according to Mary Jane Harrison born 1855 who knew her grandmother Elizabeth Osheal Harrison very well, that they recorded in their Harrison records that Elizabeth O’Shields Harrison, the wife of Tyree Harrison was known as Elizabeth O’Sheals alias Wooten.

Since some of their account may be of interest, I quote from information from their records as recorded by Mary Ethel Howell Cotterell (born 1889) and written in April of 1940. The title is “HISTORY OF TYRIE HARRISON AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH O'SHIELDS (ALIAS WOOTEN)”

Here is an exerpt:
The records of Cecelia Johnston Harrison tell us that Tyrie Harrison was the son of Robert and Gracy Harrison, that he lived in the year 1788 in Spartansburg, South Carolina and that he died on 4th October in the year 1835. His wife Elizabeth O'Sheals is registered on the same record, as living about 1790 in Spartansburg, South Carolina. Grandma Cecelia did not leave us word where either of these two ancestors were born, and we are quite sure from this fact, that she did not know. I have heard during my life, somewhere along the trail, that Elizabeth O'Sheals had a stepfather and the family did not know whether her real name was O'Sheals or Wooten because the mother had one husband named O'Sheals and another Wooten, so I, personally believe Elizabeth was a mere infant when her father died, this information is not in the family. However, my mother could remember her Grandma Harrison, who died on December 16, 1868 in Alabama. Mother Hattie Ella told me that this Grandma was a little woman, very Irish, indeed, not much hair, but wore it in a little bob on the back of her head. Mother always said Grandpa Harrison was quicktempered like the Irish; I know he was witty and clever and so I am willing to believe this lady we can feel real sure was ELIZABETH O'SHEALS and THE STEPFATHER'S NAME WOOTEN. THIS IS THE WAY IT IS RECORDED IN MY RECORDS. Since becoming acquainted through correspondence with Mrs. Elloise Legare of Fletcher, North Carolina, she has told me that their family, the descendants of John Harrison, son of Tyrie and Elizabeth, claim through tradition that Tyrie and Elizabeth were married in Virginia and rode horseback on their wedding day, going for their honeymoon to North Carolina.

Another exerpt from History of the Life of Our Noble Grandfather Hyrum Smith Harrison, rewritten Aug 10. 1940.

Hyrum Smith Harrison, was the twelfth child and eighth son of Tyrie and Elizabeth O'Sheals Harrison. ELIZABETH HAD A STEPFATHER and history of the family does not tell us whether her real name was O'Sheals or Wooten. However, my mother could remember her in Alabama and has told us that she looked very Irish. I am almost sure from this that she was O'SHEALS. ALSO AUNT JANIE CALLED HER ELIZABETH O'SHEALS AND ADDED THE WOOTEN AS AN ALIAS. We do know the family lived in Spartansburg and that Hyrum was born there. [the account keeps on going for pages... and talks about civil war and music and etc]

There has been misinformation passed along in the last 30 or so years that Elizabeth Osheals Harrison mentioned above was the daughter of Jethro Osheals. This is an error, because the daughter of Jethro Osheal was Elizabeth Osheal, wife of James Hewitt.

It is important to know that all these early Harrison family members born from the 1820s to 1850s were people who knew Elizabeth O'Shields Harrison and they stated that she was known as alias Wooten. The later descendant Mary Ethel Howell Cotterell born 1889 believed that Wooten was the step-father of Elizabeth Osheals Harrison, wife of Tyrie Harrison. I believe it is probable that Wooten was her father, not step-father, thus the way of recording her name---Elizabeth Osheals alias Wooten.

These early Harrison family records are also of interest because we can see that Creesy Oshields is enumerated next to one Nancy Wooten in 1800. There is no doubt that Teresy “Creesy” “Tracy” Oshields knew the Wooten family.

Since documentation has proven that Jethro O’Shields daughter named Elizabeth Osheal married Rev. James Hewitt, and that John Osheals daughter Elizabeth Osheal married Wyatt McHam, the only Oshields household remaining in 1800 is that of Teresa Tracy Oshields. But we have more proof of this even yet, since we know according to family papers that Elizabeth Osheals Harrison was the sister of Samuel Oshields born 1799 and Wiley Oshields born ca 1801.

Looking again at the household of Teresa – Treesy --- Creesy--- Oshields in the 1800 Spartanburg District census.

We find one male under 10. This is Samuel Oshields who was born ca 1799. He is listed in the 1850 Lumpkin County, GA census.

There is one male age 10 to 15. This is Daniel O’Shields who was born ca 1785 and who had a wife named Rhoda. He is on the 1850 Greenville County, SC census.

There are three females under the age of 10. One of these is Elizabeth Osheals who married Tyree Harrison. She was born ca 1793 and died on December 16, 1868 in Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama.

1810

In the 1810 census, the son of Teresa Tracy Oshields who was named Daniel Oshields (born 1785 wife Rhoda) had left his mothers household and was enumerated in Pendleton District, SC on page 230. One male and one female age 16 to 25. no children in the household in 1810.

The household of Tracy Oshields is listed on page 431 with one male under age 10, 1 male 16 to 25, two females 10 to 15, and one female age 45 and over.

The oldest female is that of the head of household, Teresa Treesy Tracy Oshields.
In 1800 there were three females under 10, and in 1810 there were two females remaining in the correct age category. The female absent from the household was Elizabeth Osheals Harrison. She had married Tyree Harrison and their household can be found in the 1810 census.

The male aged under 10 is that of Wiley Oshields born ca 1801, who went with his brother Samuel Oshields to Lumpkin County, GA in the 1840s during the gold rush.

I believe the remaining male to be Samuel, although he should be recorded as a lower age group.

1820

The 1820 census is quite interesting in that it appears that most of Teresa Oshields children starting out in the beginning years of establishing their households, were living on the same land that she was.

The exact order of enumeration is as follows:

Tyre Harrison
Dan’l Oshields
Sam’l Oshields
Trecy O’Shields

Thirteen names later we find the name Jethro Shields, and also Gracy Harrison.

On page 277 we find the household of James Hewatt (who married Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal) and next door Henry Oshields (oldest son of Jethro Osheal) and the next entry Daniel Oshields (born 1792 wife Mary, he was also the son of Jethro Osheal). These siblings were living on adjoining farms or on the same land apparently.

For the 1820 census as it concerns Trecy Oshields, her household is enumerated with:

1 male under age 10
1 male 16 to 18
1 male 16 to 26
one of these males would be Wiley Oshields who went to Lumpkin County, GA.

1 female 16 to 26
1 female age 45 and upwards

1830

In the 1830 Spartanburg County, SC census we find on page 289 listed N. and T. Oshields, Daniel Oshields, Senior [this is the one born 1785 with wife Rhoda], and Tyry Harrison.

The reason Daniel Oshields on page 289 is listed as Senior is to differentiate him and the younger Daniel Oshields born ca 1792 (wife Mary) on page 284 near his brother Henry Oshields. The younger Daniel Oshields was the son of Jethro Oshields. The two Daniel Oshields born 1785 and 1792 respectively would have been cousins to one another.

In the 1830 enumeration for N and T Oshields we must guess at their names. Based on past census records, it would appear that T Oshields must be Teresa or Tracy Oshields. Since there are no male of any age older than 15, and there are older females both initials would stand for female names. Although I do not have definitive proof, it has been suggested that N stands for Nancy Oshields whose nickname was Ann. Ann is a popular nickname for Nan and Nancy.

The 1830 census for N and T Oshields enumerates:

One male under five years of age
One male 10 to 15
One female 5 to 10
One female 20 to 30. [this must be “N” Oshields]
One female 70 and under 80 [this must be “T” Oshields]
I believe that the enumerator has her in an older age category than she should be. She should be in her sixties.

Samuel O’Shields was enumerated in Anderson County, SC in 1830 but returned to Spartanburg County by 1840.

1840

Samuel OShields and Wiley Oshields, proven brothers of Elizabeth Oshields Harrison [wife of Tyree Harrison] are listed on pages 83 and 84 respectively.

Samuel O’Shields, brother of Elizabeth Oshields Harrison, is listed living next door to one Thomas Knighton. Some of Elizabeth O’Shields Harrisons descendants would marry into the Knighton family.

Grace Harrison, who was the mother-in-law of Elizabeth O’Shields Harrison is listed on page 107, only one household away from Nancy “Ann” O’Shields, and also Andrew Harrison.

Ann is a popular nickname for Nancy, and vice-versa. In the census it records her name as Ann O’Shields with one male under 5, two males 10-15, one male 15-20, one female under 5, one female 5 to 10, one female 10 to 15, one female 30 to 40, and one female 70 to 80.

The age progession of the female in her 30s appears to be the same female connected closely to Tracy Oshields in prior census records. The female age 70 to 80 is likely Teresa “Tracy” Oshields. There was a close connection between Grace Harrison and Tracy Oshields, since Grace’s son Tyree Harrison married Tracy’s daughter Elizabeth Oshields.

On page 115 are several of the families connected to Jethro Oshields. The entry written Geoffy Oshields is actually Jethro Oshields. He is enumerated next to Riley Oshields, his son. A few names away are Jethro Oshields oldest son Henry O’Shields, a grandson Ralph O’Shields, the Meadows, Cook, and James Hewett who married Jethro O’Sheals daughter Elizabeth, as well as Jethro O’Sheals grandsons William Hewitt and Landy Hewitt.

After 1840 ….

Two brothers of Elizabeth O’Shields Harrison, wife of Tyree Harrison, would move to Lumpkin County, GA for the gold rush. These are the ones identified to be her brothers. They were Samuel Oshields and Wiley Oshields.

Daniel Oshields, born 1785, wife Rhoda, removed to Greenville County, SC.

After the death of Tyree Harrison, Elizabeth Osheals Harrison removed to Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama where she died on Dec 16, 1868. Also living near her were her son Hyram and daughter in law Cecelia Johnston Harrison and her granddaughter Mary Jane Harrison, both of whom recorded her death date and her name as Elizabeth Osheal alias Wooten. She was the daughter of Teresa “Tracy” Osheals, and granddaughter of Daniel Osheal and Sarah Walker.

Since Elizabeth Osheal Harrison was the daughter of Teresa Osheal and my ancestress Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt was the daughter of Jethro Osheal, this makes these two Elizabeths first cousins, and both granddaughters of Daniel Osheal and Sarah Walker.

David T Bunton

We are trying to figure out what the T.H.S. stands for, we have always believed he went to Calhoun County High School so are assuming it refers to a mascot like Tigers or something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Eric

I've just recently discovered 2 of my ancestors names listed on the findagrave.com website showing they are buried in Old Piedmont Cemetery. There's a note there indicating it's no longer in use. How would I find actual cemetery records that show names of people buried there so I can verify the listing on the findagrave.com website. Thanks for any information.

I believe there may be less than 20 burials in the cemetery and that it may be pretty hard to find. Has anyone in the area heard of this cemetery and know where it might be located? My great-great-grandfather, Edward Wesley Banister, is buried there as well as members of the Mashburn family. I would like to find it when I pay a visit to the area in early May 2008.

Lt. Col. Arthur J. Grimes of Orange County Indiana was residing in the Philippines with his wife when the Japanese invaded the islands. Grimes was captured in 1942 and was most likely executed by the Japs. We are searching for information about Lt Col Arthur J. James and especially searching for his family.

Col. Grimes wife moved to Fort McClellan after the war. Her name was Marie Moorman Grimes.

During the past four years we have united free photographs of graves and names of men on the Tablets of the Missing killed here in the Philippines, with their families. We are hoping to unite photos and information with family members. Please contact us, no strings attached. Please visit our website:

INDIANA SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
http://fizkid.tripod.com/

We have currently united photos with 197 different families of Indiana servicemen.
I have documentation for my family back to Joshua Pettit of Spartanburg, South Carolina. My Tree starts with my grandfather Zachariah T. My tree goes Zachariah Talmadge> Zachariah Taylor> Ashford> Nathan> Joshua (brother to Henry)> Joshua. In South Carolina I have that Joshua Pettit and Henry Pettit first showed up there on the 1790 census. I have Henry's Rev. War Pension naming his father as Joshua Pettit. I find FGS naming his line as Joshua(from my line)>Joshua>Thomas>Thomas>Henri but I am not finding any documentation to support this. I live in Arkansas and am just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to find the documentation that will support this information?
Hello,

My great aunt recently passed away and I am searching for her family tree genealogy. I don't have a death date but I am estimating her birth to be about 1930. Her name was Curtis Aileen Qualls Langley and I am searching for her parents and brothers and sisters and possibly her children as I would like to connect with cousins I have never meet before. Curt recently passed away on Dec. 20, 2007. Curt lived in Oxford, Alabama and was married to George Langley. Her parents are Will Qualls and Bertha Hogue. Any help is greatly appreciated with this tree because this family is my brick wall trying to find my grandmother's family.

TEDDER & CURRIER Marriage before 1860

I am looking for a record of the marriage of James M. TEDDER and Melissa CURRIER which probably occurred prior to 1860. In 1870 James and Melissa have a son whose age is listed as b. 1859 though we've unable to locate them in 1860. The families of James, son of William and Nancy TEDDER, and Melissa, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth CURRIER, lived in what was called Township 16 Range 10. Do marriage records of the period still survive? Was recording of a marriage required or a voluntary act at the time? Does anyone know what church records from the area might also be available? Thank you.

Bell family Calhoun County Alabama circa 1870,1880 +

Our Bell research has been ongoing for more years than I care to count. We have traced our Bell family from Alabama, circa 1860 to 1880. From there we go back in time to GA circa 1850. Going still further, we have census that tell us our Reason Bell and his wife Louisa were both born in SC circa 1817 and 1820 respectively. The trail ends there because we haven't been able to find parents of our Reason and/or siblings. Neither can we find proof of Louisa's maiden name (other than mere suggestion). Here is what we know for sure.
Reason Bell was born in SC in 1817. He married Louisa who was also born in SC about 1820. They married around 1837 but we don't know if they married in SC or GA. We suspect GA as their first child Mary was born in GA in 1838. In 1840, Martha was born. Nettie, aka Letty was born in 1842 in GA and Julia Ann was born in 1844 in GA. The first male child, John (T) was born in 1848 in GA. We suspect there might have been another child born between the years 1844 and 1848. James David was born in 1853 - another gap in years between 1848 and 1853. James David was also born in GA. We do not have the exact locations or the births of the children but suspect Gilmer County, GA. (No records can be found for any of the births).
The family is found in the Gilmer County, GA census for 1850. By 1860 the family has moved to Cherokee County, Alabama. The Reason Bell family with wife Louisa and correct children can be found in the 1860 Cherokee County AL census. By 1870 Louisa is found in Calhoun County, Alabama with daugher Nettie and Nettie's first child Amazona. Son John and his wife Julia are found a few doors distance from Louisa. In 1880 son James David is found with his wife Sarah and children. Louisa is listed on that census.
Mary can't be found. Martha married a Smith and had son Jim Smith and Viola Smith who married James Abston. Nettie married Royal Madison Howell. Julia married Warren Manning, John and Julia have moved to Texas and by 1880 John has died. James and Sarah stayed in Calhoun County. Louisa died around 1908.
(all of this information can be found on genealogy sites with some incorrect information).
We are desperately seeking additional information for this Reason Bell family and the family history of Louisa prior to their prescence in Gilmer County circa 1850. If anyone can help us uncover additional information we would be forever grateful. With little else to go on regarding Reason and Louisa's siblings or parents we have come up against a brick wall we can't seem to overcome. Any help is appreciated.
Please send questions or comments direct to
Teri - bigspringhistory@yahoo.com or lesliewhooper@suddenlink.net
or
Carol - carolvaeth@aol.com

Thank you in advance
Am looking for children or grandchildren of Maggie Trammell Gowens. Her husband's name appears to be Math Gowens. Maggie was the daughter of Seaborn Trammell and Georgia Ann Maddox.

Maggie Trammell Gowens was born April 25, 1891 and died in Piedmont in January 1984. She had a brother, Sam Trammell, who never married and died in Piedmont in April 1987.

There was another brother, Richard Walter Tramel, who died in Texas in 1979. There was also another older brother, my great-grandfather, who was apparently the first child of Seaborn and Georgia and was adopted out--his name was Brewster White and his adopted parents were Thomas and Evaline White. They were in Jacksonville.

According to the 1900 census of Calhoun County, Georgia had had 6 children, 5 of whom were still living. Only Samuel and Maggie were still at home, and if you count Brewster and Walter, that still only adds up to 4 children. There must be another child of Seaborn and Georgia out there. I would like to know who that was.

Seaborn Trammell was the son of Hiram Trammell (brother of Bilington and Dennis Trammell, et al) and Elizabeth Tavenvill and Georgia Ann Maddox was the daughter of William Teague Maddox and Sarah Chamblin. William T. Maddox was the son of John Maddox and Rebecca Teague.

She is buried in Coldwater Baptist Church Cemetery in Calhoun Co. They had two daus. Mittie Eula Bagley b. May 1869 Calhoun Co., AL and Susan Elizabeth Bagley b. Aug 1871 (Susan Sr. died from complications of this birth) d. 18 Jun 1948 AL. X. H. m.2 a Buena V ? and had more children. This family is buried in Oxford Memorial Gardens, Calhoun Co. Would like to know if anyone has done an inventory of these cemeteries and if so, where can I locate. Would really like photos but will settle for what I can get. Because Buena raised these two children by Susan and X. H. most researchers have her listed as the mother. To my knowledge, neither of these girls ever married. Susan was a school teacher for a while then believe she work in store that her brothers, Jim and Floyd owned in Anniston. I am not sure how far back obits go, but would love to have one for any of these.
Hope someone can assist me with this line.
Mary

I am looking-for years now-for a burial in Bynum,Alabama.

Nora Irene (McDaniel) Suit
Born-1869 Died-1895-6
Was married to---John R. Suit

Bible record says she was buried in Bynum, Al.

Can someone tell me if there is an old record of a
funeral home in that time frame--someplace I might write?
Perhaps a Baptist, Methodist or Presbyterian Church that
would have records back that far that I could write? The
family had these 3 religeons. Perhaps she was buried
in a church cemetery?? I tried for an obit--didnt find one.
I wrote Alabama state records-none found. Does Bynum have
a city hall? Perhaps old records there?? Also tried Annisten
library---they didnt find anything. Would there be a headcount
or tax in that time frame? Census dont help-she died between
census's. I really need help, and would appreciate any help.
Helen Ross melr@rapidnet.com
