I found my Great grandfather living in Lineville, Clay County, Alabam on the 1900 Federal Census. He was age 13. He was living with his mother, who was widowed and her name on the census as much as I can make out is Samanth, age 49. Can anyone help me. I hope to hear from someone soon.....The fact that they were living in Clay County, Alabama should link them to some Luker line.
I am searching for information on the second wife of Floyd Braxton "Brack" Mackey (20 April 1891-30 October 1964). He first married Annie Cornelius (13 August 1887-18 October 1918). After her death, he married a lady by the name of Lela (born ca. 1881) in I presume Clay County, Alabama. I have seen a reference that she may have either a Richards or a Treadwell? When Floyd Braxton "Brack" Mackey died in 1964, his death certificate indicated that he was a widower. I have tried to find Lela Mackey in the Alabama death index but I have been unable to do so. She was not buried beside him in the Ashland Cemetery in Clay County, Alabama. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for a Hall family from the 1860 something. They were William Allen Hall born Feb. 5, 1868 & wife Mary Emma Jones Hall. She had a brother named Ed.
They were farming on the Old Captain Allen Place. WA Hall like to lead singings at church. He died of an accidential gunshot wound March 17, 1899 . They had 4 children the oldest being my grandfather William Marvin Hall born Aug. 10, 1888. The family relocated to Lanett, Chambers County Alabama in the early 1900. Has anyone heard of a A Captain Allen in Clay, or Randolph or Tallapoosa counties??He may have been John Allen. It was rumored that they lived near Truitt and Wadley at one time also. I'm trying to locate the Old Captain Allen place-some say it ws in Simpson community. Any Clues would be appreciated.William Allen Hall is said to be buried in the old Vickers Cementery in an unmarked grave. Another clue was they are related to the Milams and Nolens of Tallapooosa or Clay or Randolph counties.
Hi I'm researching an English seaman H.D Jessop, his ship was blockaded by the Union navy in an Alabama port. Having no money he joined the Confederate army. According to the little information I have he possibly joined the 15th Cavalry Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers. I am trying to comfirm this and would appreciate any help on the role of the Alabama Partisan Rangers in the civil war. He returned to England in 1867 and is buried in Linthorpe cemetery, Middlesbrough.

Many thanks Chris Carter

Ed Hobbs / James Hobbs / Willie Hobbs / Hobs

I'm desperately trying to find information on my grandfather's side of the family. My GF was Willie Hobbs aka W H Hobbs although he had no middle name the family, as it was common to do back then...used the last name as the middle initial. His father was Ed Hobbs or E Hobs aka Edward Hobbs. Ed was originally from Georgia as were his parents and he was killed by a train October 21, 1911 here in Houston county; Dothan, AL. His funeral was conducted at Selma Baptist but they have no records of anything. Ed was married to a May-Lula (we were always told her name was Mary) on the 1910 census and had stepchildren of "Tenley" although their names were Andrew aka Ander and Noah Finely / Fenley. Ed apparently had a son named James (grown child and perhaps he is the son listed on the 1910 census. Nontheless....I've been going in circles for YEARS and finding no one with any information.

Any one out there with the answers would be appreciated!

Allen Stone married Claudia Marie Elder, circa 1920, in either Alabama or Georgia. I think they had around 9 children. Only three have known birth years: Virginia Ruth Stone, b: 1921 (m: Emmit Dougherty); Ella Bea Stone, b: 1925 (m: several marriages, Unk Hart); & Lillie Merle Stone, b: 1935 (m: Winston Craven). The 6 with unknown birth years are: Donald Stone (m: Unk Brenda), Tiny Stone (m: Unk McCrary), Ann Stone (m: Unk), Jean Stone (m: Unk Hay), Judy Stone (m: Unk Wright), and Allen Stone (m: Unk).

Allen Stone served his Country during WWI: Alabama, PFC, 258 Co., Mil Pol Corps.

I would love to have contact with a descendant of the Stone family for sharing of family history, records, & photos. I am related to the Stone family through Jessie Beatrice Stone, d/o William Allen Stone & Martha Martiny "Tiny" Royster. Jessie and Allen (subject of this message) were siblings, and born in Clay County, AL. Please help me fill in the missing information on this branch of the Stone family.

I am trying to find-out information on my cousins Samuel C. & Louisa SPRAYBERRY Clark.

As of right now all I know is: Cousin Samuel was born about 1816-1817 in South Carolina to Uncle Samuel & Aunt Susan MASTERS Clark who moved to Henry County, Georgia by 1830 (they lived in both Henry & Meriwether Counties). Cousin Louisa was born to unknown Sprayberry's, well unknown to me currently but I am sure her line ties into that of my sixth great-grandfather Archibald Sprayberry. I believe Samuel & Louisa were in Talladega County, Alabama for the 1860 census but with initials being used & not being able to find them in Georgia or 'Bama in 1850 I cannot be positive (though Sprayberry's were moving from Georgia to 'Bama during this time period). In 1880 they are in Clay County.

Their children:
B A Clark DAUGHTER born about 1838 Georgia
S M Clark SON born about 1840 Georgia
R J Clark DAUGHTER born about 1841 Georgia
S Clark SON born about 1844 Georgia
J S Clark SON born about 1846 Georgia
J Clark DAUGHTER born about 1850 Georgia
J H M V Clark SON born about 1852 Georgia
Mary L.

With my family tree on Ancestry.com, I have posted the history of my family from Clay, Coosa, Talladega and Tallapoosa Counties with the following primary surnames: Dunn, Gaddis, Haines, Hancock, Hughes and Todd.

Many of my ancestors were slaves, but I have not been able to confirm the names of their owners. One family to whom my family is that of John and Emily Demaris Hughes Clisby. Their son, George Clinton, had a child with my great-great-grandmother, Hester Haines Hughes, who was a slave to the Clisbys. “Hettie,” as she was called, was also a nurse-midwife and delivered many children in Tallapoosa and Coosa Counties, including several of her grandchildren.

My great-great-grandparents, Henry Hancock and Mary Dunn Hancock, were slaves in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and lived in Hackneyville.

Some of my Todd relatives left Russell County, Alabama following Emancipation. They landed in Hackneyville. They married into the Gaddis and Murray families there. They left about 1915 to go to Birmingham.

My family is huge, so I encourage everyone to review the family history. There just might be a connection -- Black, white or Native American.

Steve Townsend
I'm trying to identify the parents of my 2nd great grandfather, William A. Stone, b: Sept 1862 in Alabama. My William A. Stone married Martha Martina Royster, and his parents were supposedly born in GA.

I have located a Will Stone, age 7, m, w, born in AL, in the 1870 Clay Co., AL Census. He's living with the Allen Brooks family. There is also a Martha Stone, age 23, f, w, born in GA, living with this family.

The very next family following them in the Census is another Brooks family. It's Abraham Brooks, age 75, m w, farmer, from NC. He has a Lucinda Brooks living with him, at age 63, f, w, keeping house, born in GA. <--- I found this interesting since the Allen Brooks (age 66, m, w, miller, born in SC, "also" has a "Lucenda Brooks" (age 63, f, w, keeping house, born in GA), living with him and she has the very same info about her on the census as the other Lucinda does.

This Will Stone's information fits my William A. Stone. Can anyone tell me anything about the two Brooks families, or the Martha & Will Stone? Are Martha & Will, mother & son, or could they be siblings, cousins, etc?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

TJ

Hi!
I was looking up a 1870 census for two different people.
One of them a Robert Porter is seen living in TOWNSHIP 21 RANGE 7, Clay Alabama

The other A.G. Beck is seen living in TOWNSHIP 20 RANGE 9.

What I was wondering was what does it mean by TOWNSHIP and RANGE...?

Any would these two people be living relatively close to one another?

Thanks!
Emily Cole

Two researchers have given conflicting locations of the death of my ancestor Henry W. Machen (died 1888). One says he was buried in the Tom Hammond Cemetery on Brownsville Road near Shady Grove in Clay County. Another says the Carmichael Cemetery in Goodwater, Clay County. I've been unable to locate either cemetery on the internet. Does anyone know where I can track down information about these cemeteries?

I am looking for information on the ancestry of my great grandmother Ollie Bell. I believe that her maiden name was Causey but am not absolutely certain. According to census materials and grave marker info, she was born in Alabama, county uncertain, in 1882 and died in Tallapoosa Co., AL in 1960. She married John H. White (b 1878, Clay County, AL, d 1953, son of John R. and Mary B. White)) in 1899 or 1900 in Clay County where they subsequently lived and produced 7 children:
Leslie, b c1903 (Married "Uncle Claude", surname unknown)
Vera Naomi, b c1906 (married Culberson)(my grandmother)
Buford, b c1907
Vinita, b c1910 (married Shaw)
Lois, b c1913 (married Sparks)
Homer, b c1917
Ruth, b c1921 (married Benton)

Leslie, Vinita, Buford, and Homer all settled in the Sanford Florida area. The others stayed in and around east cental Alabama. I have a bounty of photographs of my great grandparents and their children, the 5 girls never got together without taking a group photo, but essentially nothing about my great grandmother's family prior to her marriage.

Are there any relatives out there with more information?

Clay County Funeral Homes

Im searching for a listing of all Clay County funeral homes, built between 1920 to 1930.

My great grandmother was last found on the 1920 census, living in Brownville,Clay County AL. Does anyone know if there were any funeral homes in operation, near Brownville, at that time? My g grandmother is not found in the 1930 census, she is not listed in the social security death index or alabama death index. Searching funeral homes is my last hope. Her name was Cordelia Matherson, and she lived with her son in law, Robert Brooks and daughter, Minnie. ANY assistance appreciated. Cordelia was orginally from Talladega County, and she isnt found there either.
