(photo)

Born in Franklin Co. Alabama on Oct. 7, 1916
and resided in Elkin, NC

Louvena Charlene Oden Thomas, age 92, of Ronda, passed away Saturday morning, January 3, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin after a short illness.

Mrs. Thomas was bom on October 7, 1916 in Franklin County, Alabama, to Wardie Hardin Oden and Sally Gibson Oden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Preston Thomas; and infant son, Edwin Donohue Thomas; one sister. Myrtle Oden Porter; and three brothers, John Oden, Jack Oden, and Grady Oden.

She is survived by a sister, Willie Whitman of Haleyville, Alabama; two daughters, Marquita (Bob) Appleby of Capitan, New Mexico, and Pam (Lowell) Clybum of Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Stephen (Linda) Thomas of Ronda; eight grandchildren, Robin (Craig) Yager, Gina (Jon) Blaylock, Greg (Kristy) Clybum, Gwyn (Doug) Hines, Brian (Thais) Clybum, Travis (Candy) Thomas, Ryan (Reu) Thomas, and Meghan Thomas; and fourteen great-grand children, Ben Frey, Autumn Blaylock, Joshua Blaylock, Debra (Joe) Hall, Carisa Clybum, Chad Clybum, Mikayla Cagle, Rylee Clybum, Preston Clybum, Morgan Clybum, Rett Thomas, Ty Thomas, Abby Thomas, and Matthew Thomas; two special care-givers. Here, for more than thirty years, she was employed by "Roses" in downtown Elkin, where she became a familiar face to many in the community. She was a loyal and beloved member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church and was active in Sunday School and the United Methodist Women until her health declined. She and her husband Grady, served as delegates to the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church several times. She will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her kind, gentle, and self-less nature, her Christ-like humility, and her talent as an extraordinary cook, for which she was known throughout the community. She enjoyed doing things for her family, especially cooking for large family get-togethers, and, according to her grandchildren, absolutely no one could cook their favorite things like "Memaw." She was a true servant of God, a treasure to her family, and an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Maple Springs United Methodist Church, Ronda, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church (Building or Cemetery Fund), or to "Red Bird Mission," in care of the United Methodist Women at Maple Springs UMC, P.O. Box 187, Ronda, N.C. 28670. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Thomas family.

Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 1/5/2009
Seeking info on Wm. Malone Brooks, Sr. (b. 1804 SC). He was living in Franklin Co. in 1840 Census. Owned land on Hwy. 24 1-2 miles east of Red Bay he acquired in 1837, with adjoining land owned by Amy Ann Brooks. I've been told that same land was later owned by a Dr. Thorne. Also, at some time by Fred Vinson/Curt Britton and Luther Nelson & sons. Wm. Malone Brooks, Sr. left AL about 1847 with son, Wm.Malone Brooks, Jr. and his family. Assume Sr.'s wife was deceased. But there were several younger daughters and at least two younger sons who I presume remained in Franklin Co. either with their mother's family members or married, older bros/sisters. One son was named Peter who did appear in 1860 Census, Red River County, TX, age 21. Any help with this family will be appreciated. Wife of Wm. Malone Brooks, Jr. was Eliza Bates, daughter of Robert Patrick Bates, who owned grist mill now known as Jordans Mill east of Russellville.

I am searching for information regarding my 3rd & 4th gr. grandfathers and my 3rd gr. uncle. My 3rd gr. grandfather was G.W. (George W.) Thorn (b. abt. 1830 - d.?) m. Sarah C. Long (b. abt. 1830 - d.?) and lived in Franklin Co., AL, in 1850, and was born somewhere in AL, according to the census records for that county and that year. George W. married a 2nd time to Rhoda P. Sanderson (daughter of John & Sarah Sanderson) on 1/14/1866 in Limestone Co., AL. My 4th gr. grandfather was Dr. Charnel (or Charonel) Hightower Thorn (possibly Thomas C.H. Thorn) (b. abt. 1794 in ? N.C. - d.?) m. Elizabeth Sanderson (b. abt. 1791 in ?N.C. - d.?) and also lived in Franklin Co., AL in 1850 according to the census records. My 3rd gr. uncle was William Hightower Thorn (b. abt.1824 - d.?. I believe that all three men moved to Giles Co., TN, at some point, but not sure when. I have been unable to locate any records attesting to that possibility. However, I beleive George had a son, John Hightower Thorn - my 2nd gr. grandfather (b. abt. 1855 - d.?) who m. Louisa (Lavinia or Lucinda or Lou Annie) White and lived in Giles Co., TN, and was listed on the census records for that county in 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920. I would like to know where in NC Charnel H. Thorn and Elizabeth Sanderson were born, and where they might be buried.

Underwood Family

I am currently researching the Underwood family and particularly, Andrew Jackson Underwood (b. 1815-d.1893) the brother of Nimrod T. Underwood (b. 1820-d.1897) of Franklin County.

I have information that A. J. Underwood owned property in Greene County Alabama between 1856 and 1858. I have strong reasons to believe that A. J. Underwood owned a slave, John Underwood, who was my gggrandfather. The 1850 Slave schedule for Greene County and the 1860 Slave Schedule for the Western Division of Franklin County indicate that A. J. Underwood was the owner of several slaves, the first listed on both schedules matching the age my gggrandfather would have been at each census.

I also know that A.J. Underwood lived with his daughter, Mary Lenora Underwood Hughes and her husband, William R. Hughes by 1880 and that he probably moved to Texas with them.

If you have any information regarding Andrew Jackson Underwood, particularly when and why he left Greene County, Alabama and ended up in Meridian, Texas where he is buried, I would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me and/or let me know how I might find this information. I am particularly interested in records of Andrew Underwood's sale of two slaves, a female named Lucinda and her child George, to a Spencer family when he left Greene County. A bill of sales, plantation/farm records, or records of his blacksmith business etc. would be helpful.

I sincerely appreciate any assistance that can be provided!
Descendants of Robert SIBLEY and wife Elizabeth [UNKSUR]

There are several publications/online pedigrees and other secondary/tertiary sources which name the children of Robert SIBLEY & Elizabeth. Can anyone point me to any PRIMARY sources whereby I might confirm who their children were? I have info from 2 different researchers (independant of each other), one listing the SIBLEY offspring as Thomas Tanner, Robert Campbell, John, Mahaly, Sabrina, Elizabeth and Caroline. The information was not confirmed by the compiler, but came from various SIBLEY descendants a number of years ago. The other researcher (who did his own work) has found only Thomas Tanner (Sr.), Robert Campbell, Sabrina, Caroline and John. I am researching Mahala who is spouse of Sterling B. WILLIAMSON in 1850 Franklin Co--naming patterns of their children strongly suggest this Mahala is the "Mahaly SIBLEY cited above. I need to locate a family Bible, legal record, etc. to prove there was indeed a Mahala/Mahaly SIBLEY, child of Robert & Elizabeth.
Does anyone know any Oliver family stories, good or bad? We know they tended to marry young.

I'm also wondering where the patriarch, Henry Oliver, might be buried. He died in 1884. His wife, Manerva (Perry), is last found in the 1880 census, and I don't know when or where she died.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Many are still there, although some went to Navarro County TX to farm cotton between 1870 and 1900.

Much Lawrence County intermarriage with the Putmans, Sivleys, Pitts, Rhodes, and Napps families.

I have had my dna tested to 67 marker level.

thanks, Tom McCulloch

My mother in law was a Vandiver. Her family is buried at the Vandiver Hollow Cemetery, which is right next to the Vandiver Hollow Baptist Church. We think it's in Russellville but aren't positive. My husband was only 2 when they moved from Alabama to Texas. We try to visit Alabama every now and then but haven't been able to visit in about 5 years. I would love to be able to find an enumeration for this cemetery online but I have not once, seen any mention of this cemetery. My mother in law tried to help me with this family but she knew so little. Her father (John Melton Vandiver) died when she was a girl and she passed on in 2000. I am told Johns siblings were Susan Hamm, Maude Whillock, Estelle Hamm, Mary Frances Crosslin and Adolphus Vandiver. I would love to meet any Vandivers or anyone that knew them. This family is a brick wall for me. Can anyone help? Johns wife Margaret (Ollie) married Lee Fisher later and the Fishers are also buried at Vandiver Hollow. You can email me at Jleolvr@aol.com.

I am Martin Mathis, now living in northern Virginia.
I am searching for info on my grandfather "William (Bill) Mathis", from the area of Fulton Miss. My grandmother (Radar Era Williams) and him were never married, she had a son (William Franklin Mathis)born in May 1933. She told me my grandfather was killed in Russellville, in 1939. It was due to an accident at work, either a gravel quarry or maybe a lumber yard (conflicting stories). She said that after "William Mathis" left the Fulton area, he married a lady who already had children from a previous marriage. By checking area maps, I have found that Russellville Miss is at the bottom of the state, a good distance from Fulton. But there is also a Russellville Alabama, about 80 miles due east of the Fulton area.

I am surprised that no one put on the Franklin County (rootsweb) message board that Frances Nichols has passed away. She played a huge part in the Franklin County Archives and will be missed by many - not only her immediate family, but all of us who was blessed to know her through her help in finding the ancestors of many who resided in Russellville at one time or another. I just found out today that she had passed away last April after a brief bout with cancer, through the "ALFRANK@rootsweb.com" who sent me a newspaper article published by Jonathon WILLIS dated on June 16 in the "TIMES DAILY" newspaper..."Advocates of Archives Facility honored for their contributions"...honoring Frances Nichols and former Franklin County Probate Judge Mike Green. When I was there 3 years ago last April, she and Chris Ozbirn helped me locate information on my SARGENT line and Maj. William RUSSELL, Sr as if I was the only one in the building doing research....devoted all of their efforts and attention to me - even took me to the old cemetery in Russellville and the home place of Pellum SARGENT.

Frances will be highly missed by the ones she left behind but Heaven has been blessed with her presence among the Angels who have went to be with the Lord before her.

If anyone has a copy of her obituary - I would really appreciate a copy of it. By the way, I'm from Oklahoma...I was lucky to have met her. God Bless her family and what she has done for the community of Russellville.

Thank you...

Sincerely,
Denise
Looking for correspondence with families who had Union Soldiers from Franklin Co AL

excerpt from the book "Tupelo" -

Washington Gortney arose and said: "Mr. President--We are here assembled to determine what is the best method of evading the conscript law and keeping out of the rebel army. I favor enlisting in the Federal army. We will then be far more efficient in defending our government from subversion by traitors--James Reece, who is seated by yonder linden tree, and I have proved our faith by our works. We are soldiers in the Federal army. We fought at Shiloh and are with the army at Farmington assisting in the siege of Corinth, and soon we hope to capture that stronghold and bring deliverance to the persecuted Unionists in North Mississippi. If you stay here you will be forced into the rebel army, or you will be shot or hung, as too many of our loyal fellow citizens have been. There are already three hundred from this county in the Federal army, and four hundred from Franklin, the county contiguous to this in North Alabama. Leave your families; it will be only for a short time. Corinth will fall and before the Fourth of July this county, and probably the whole state, will be delivered from rebel

Page 81
domination. I will make this motion: Be it resolved, that we believe it to be conducive to the best interests of ourselves personally, and the Union cause, to which we will ever adhere, for all of suitable military age to escape to the Federal army now besieging Corinth and to enlist in that army."

thanks in advance - collecting data on all Union families.
Joel S.
I'm looking for information on Malissie BARNES who is listed as living at Pleasant Site on the 1880 Franklin Co., AL census. She is listed as widowed (age 31) with son James (age 12), daughter Lauria (age 4), and daughter Ida (age 9 months).

Malissie is actually Nicey Melissa CARR born abt 1848 in Cherokee Co., GA; daughter of James and Lauressa CARR. She married James BARNES 01 Apr 1866 in Limestone Co., AL. They had the following children (all born in Limestone Co.,AL):

1) James Wesley (b. 1867)
2) Annie (b. 1870 ??)
3) Ada Vandelia (b. 1873)
4) Mary Fannie (b. 1876)--my great-great grandmother & same as Lauria listed above
5) Ida Jenovia (b. 1879)
6) Posey Whitten (b. 1880)

Nicey Melissa and James divorced in Dec 1880.

I am trying to find out what happened to Niecy (aka Malissie) after 1880 because I can't find her after that point. Did she re-marry, leave Franklin Co. or die sometime between 1880-1900? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on my great great grandparents and hope that you can help. Thomas Jefferson Orr (Sr) was born in Alabama about 1850 and married Maggie E. Ross in Colbert County on October 31, 1872. Maggie was born about 1848 in Alabama. Mostly looking for inforamtion on Maggie. Her father shows to be born in Tennesse and mother in North Carolina. In found them living in Franklin County Alabam on the 1880 Census. I found Thomas Jefferson Orr Sr with another wife in 1900 in Oklahoma. It show that he has a daughter named Mattie B. that was born in Mississippi about 1890. I can only assume that Maggie might have died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. I do not know her parents name or any other information on her due to her early age of death. I have been told that she made it to Oklahoma and died, but have been unsuccessful in finding her grave. It is not with Thomas Jefferson in the Lebanon Cemetery of Oklahoma. Any information would be helpful.

Lewis Harvey
I am looking for the siblings, and parents, of my great-grandfather, Lewis Harvey, who was born in Alabama in 1825. Louis and his wife, Anackie (Adair?), were in the 1870 census of Fayette County, Tennessee. Anackie was born in 1830 in Alabama as was her sister, Aggie. In the 1870 census of Fayettte County, Tennessee, Lewis was enumerated after that of John W. Jones who brought his family and slaves with him from Tuscombia, Franklin County, Alabama in 1826. The land in Fayettte County was given to John W. Jones by Micajah Moorman, the father of his wife, Martha W. Moorman who purchased the land in Tennessee in 1824.
In the 1900 census, his sons, Lewis H. and Joseph, indicated that they were born in Tennessee, their father had been born in Alabama, and their mother’s birthplace was Virginia. Lewis may have been brought to Tennessee by John W. Jones. Jones’ parents came from Buckingham County, Virginia, and his wife, Martha Moorman, was born in Campbell County, Virginia.
The children of Louis and his wife were Lewis H., Joseph, Jeff, Jennie (Dink), and Victoria. The children of his son, Lewis H. and his wife, Alice Lambert, were Edward, Dora, Mattie, William Joseph, Lewis, Lucille, Ressie, Norman, Milton, George Baker, Nannie Sue, Cornell, Ossie Belle, and Alice.

Any information about his siblings and parents will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I am looking for info on the John Vaden with wife Safronia in the 1860 Franklin Co. census.

Any one know this family, have any info on them?

In 1870 they were in Colbert Co. census. I have an idea they didn't move, it was cause Colbert Co. was created between the 1860 & 1870 census. Then where they lived in Franklin Co., became Colbert Co.

By 1880 Mary (Safronia or Safrona) was in Lauderdale Co., Tennessee with the children, but John is no longer in the household. 1900 Safrona is living in Haywood Co., Tennessee with Thomas J. Vaden and family. Census say Safrona is a cousin to Thomas. She is a widow, married 12 years.

I am not sure if I have found Thomas in past census. Says he was born in Alabama. Can't find a Vaden Family in Alabama that works out to be Thomas' family. If he was a cousin to Safronia, would have had to been a cousin by marriage, I would thing, maybe? So Thomas would be a son of a brother to John's dad.

Would appreciate any info on this family.

Thank you, Cathy

Just south of Franklin Mobile Homes is a flea market and in the mist of the flea market is a grave with a marker that has the name ROBERTSON or Roberson with the name of JANIE 1925----1925. Mother name M.J. Father O.W.. After talking with the owner of the flea market I was told that Janie was stillborn and that a second girl later died but no marker was every put up. He also told me that the girls had a brother name Henry, the family lived across the highway from the flea market in the corner house.Does any-one know anything about this family. I have lots that belong to me at K.P. cemerty that I would have the marker put there if no one know where the rest of this family is bury at or know anything about the family. In checking all listing of the cemetry in Franklin county I am not able to find a Henry,M.J. or O.W.either under Robison,Robinson,Roberson, or Robertson.
The owner of the flea market said he did not have any objection to my moving them if I can only find out information on them.
You can e-mail me at RUBRIGI2@aol.com.
My phone is 334-382-9268
cell phone is 334-210-0029
Thank you
Betty J.Robison Stowers
