On Sept. 10, 1838, Jesse RIGGS of Lawrence County, AL, was granted Public Lands, Certificate No. 9450, at the office at Huntsville for:

"the North West quarter, of the North East quarter, of Section Twenty, in Township Seven, of Range Eight West, in the district of Sands subject to Sale at Huntsville, Alabama, Containing Forty Acres and two hundredths of an Acre."

This Jesse RIGGS may have been my grgrgrandfather, who was born about 1802, AL. He married Melinda UNKNOWN b: abt 1806 in TN. They had the following children:

1. Isaah Calvin RIGGS b: FEB 1834, AL
2. Henry RIGGS b: ABT 1826, AL
3. Sarah A. RIGGS b: ABT 1840, AL

Jesse is listed on the 1830 and 1840 census for Lawrence Co., AL, but not on the 1850 census. It is believed that he made the 1849 gold rush and never came back.

He married Melinda around 1820, in Mississippi. She is found in the 1850 census of Tishomingo County along with the children, but no Jesse.
John Roberts ~ Sarah Gheen

I am interested in any info on John Roberts and Sarah Gheen as I believe that their son, John, born April 12, 1799 may have married Marthena Ivy July 9, 1834 in Lawrence County and both died prior to 1840. Believe they may be the parents of my great grandfather, Thomas Wiley Roberts, born in 1837 or 1838 in Lawrence Co. He first appears on the census in 1850 in the family of Harris Hendon. It appears that any Roberts in Lawrence County in 1830 was a member of this family. Any information would be much appreciated.
Roy

Hello!
My ggg-grandfather is listed in family records as "Dr. James Looney McDaniel, M.D." His approximate date of birth would be around 1840, and I am hoping to find out who his parents are. Also, his son was Edwin Everett McDaniel, born in Tyler, Texas.
I have found several records of the marriage of one James McDaniel and Lydia Ann Looney in 1840 in Lawrence Co, but all records I've seen do not list any children.
If you have any information on this family, I would love to know. Thank you!
Jamie Mauk-Olson

I am trying to tie a Hurst family to our Hurst family that came to Lawrence County from Franklin County Alabama in the early 1900's. In Bethel Cemetery is a marker for Russell H. Hurst 10/15/1859 to 3/10/1915. His son was Harry C. Hurst and grandson is James Earl Hurst. They say they are from Mt Hope. I feel certain they are descendents of Henry Hurst or one of his children. He lived in Russellville Alabama. If anyone knows the origins of this family, please contact me.

Looking for info on my ggg grandfather george rains. I believe he was born about 1804. He was married to Martha Borden. They married in 1854 and in the 1860 census Marth lived with her parents David and Sarah and had 2 children, Lutie and Washington (George). There is no husband listed. Also no husband listed on 1870 and 1880. There are lot of George Rains' listed and I can not seem to find the correct George. Any information would be great.
Thanks,
Debbie

I am researching the Joel Denton family found in District 7 Lawrence County, AL 1850 census. This family shows up in Sebastian County Arkansas on the 1860 census. I am particularly interested in 14 year old John on the 1850 census. He doesn't show with the family in 1860 in Arkansas. He may be my John R. Denton who is in Lauderdale County, MS 1853-1859 and in Winn Parish, LA in 1860, and back in Lauderdale, MS by 1870.

Affiliated names are DENTON, KEITH, DAVISON, BUNCH, CHEEK

I am researching this family and have run into a snag. John Landers b.1804, was the postmaster of Landersville and the town was named after him. I am trying to prove that Luther P.Landers b. 1827(known as "Pee")was his son. Does anyone have any information? I am the ggranddaughter of Pee's son, Robert H. I believe Pee's wife was Nancy Elkins.

The Smith Family of Lawrence County, Alabama; Part II

The Smith Family, Part II

The Smith family is found in Lawrence County in the 1870s. William Smith was born in 1828 in Alabama. According to probate records, he died October 25, 1890. He first married Mary Peek who was born in 1837 and died between 1860 and 1870. He was living in Winston County, Alabama with his parents Moses and Elizabeth Smith in 1850. He remained in Winston County for many years before moving to Lawrence County. William lived in Winston County with his wife Mary and had five children who were David, Rebecca, William, Mary and Jane. William lived next door to his brother Zackria in Winston County. William had moved to Lawrence County by 1880 and his brother Zackria followed him. In September 1869, William was elected as the Pastor of Elams Creek Baptist in Lawrence County.

Moses Smith was born in South Carolina in 1796 and was living in Madison County, Alabama in 1830 and 1840 before moving to Winston County. Both William and Moses were members of the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church in Winston County in 1859. The census identifies Moses' occupation as a Minister. Moses had five children that is known which were Rolin, William, Sarah, Henry, and Zackria. It is not known when or where Moses and Elizabeth died. The Winston County courthouse burned in 1891 so there are no copies of probate or marriage records for that county prior to that date.

David Smith, son of William, was born in August 1852, and died in 1934 according to the family Bible. He married Nancy Jane Parker on July 2, 1871 in Lawrence County. Jane was born in 1859 and died in 1898 while sitting at the dinner table. Jane's parents were John T. Parker and Mary C. "Polly" Neely. John was born in Tennessee on February 6, 1808 and died April 23, 1878. Both he and Mary are buried at Parker's Cove, the family homeplace. Mary was born October 15, 1807 in Tennessee and died September 30, 1893. Both John and Mary were members of the Elams Creek Baptist Church. Jane's family story is documented in he book "From the Valley to the Mountains: A History of Some Lawrence County, Alabama Settlers." David and Jane are buried in the family cemetery by the old homestead in the Bankhead National Forest. David and Jane had six children who were Roman, Sissy, Jim David, Martha Jane, Senia Elizabeth, and William Henry.

Zackria Smith, brother of William and son of Moses, who was born in 1831, and died March 1, 1916 and is buried at Center. He married Francis Peek who was a sister to Mary Peek who married Zackria's brother William. Zackria and Frances had seven children who were Elizabeth, Mary, Moses, Margury, Daniel, Nancy, and Duskie. Daniel and Nancy were twins. Daniel Smith was born in 1865 and died in 1934 and is buried at Old Friendship Cemetery with his wife. Daniel married Malissa Pearson on May 23, 1888 in Lawrence County. Malissa was born February 11, 1869 and died September 1, 1925. Daniel and Malissa had five children who were Lucy Etta, Tresey Ellen, Shirley, Minnie, and Madivie. They owned and operated a store for several years in Lawrence County.

William Henry Smith, son of David, was born June 26, 1885 adn died May 17, 1964. He married Lucy Etta Smith, daughter of Daniel, on January 1, 1908 in Giles County, Tennessee. Lucy was born September 17, 1894 and died June 19, 1942. Both William and Lucy are buried in Johnson Cemetery in Lawrence County near the old family home built by William. Lucy's father Daniel, was a first cousin to David Smith. The families were against William and Lucy marrying because of the close relation. William and Lucy eloped to Tennessee. William and Lucy had 15 children and were happy together. One of their children, Burley Smith, was born August 21, 1921 and married Viola Childers on July 27, 1940. Viola was born April 3, 1923 and died March 18, 1986. They lived in the home built by William and Burley still lives there. Burley and Viola had four children who were Wilda, Kenneth, Tony, and Ricky.

Submitted by: Ricky Smith, 4328 County Road 81, Danville, AL 35619
Sources: Smith Family Bible; census, probate, and marriage records; Minutes of the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Lost Creek United Baptist Association of the Primitive Order October 1859; From the Valley to the Mountains: A History of Some Lawrence County, Alabama Settlers by Mary Nell Heflin anbd Martha Ann Terry; Minutes of Elams Creek Church transcribed by Myra Borden.

-"The Heritage of Lawrence County, Alabama" page 241.

I am going to try a posting again, as it's been about a year now. I am looking for information on Hiram Campbell (b. 1792, KY or TN), who married Sarah Gordon (b. 1796, NC?) on June 15, 1816, in Maury Co, TN. They stopped for a short while in Limestone Co, around 1820. They moved on to Lawrence Co, soon thereafter. Most of their children were born in Lawrence Co, AL. Sarah passed away around 1850, and Hiram remarried Margaret Hamilton on Mar 6, 1855. Some of Hiram's children moved to McLennan, Texas area and have multiplied from there. If anyone knows anything about Hiram or Sarah, please let me know, as this has been a large brick wall for a number of years.
Harrison is one of their children, who married Susan Looney. Lots of info can be found on the Looney's, but little on the Campbells. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vic
Can anyone verify that I am making the right connection that Anna Hawkins the daughter of William Hawkins and Delia A. J.
Stepchildren: Jenkins brothers born Town Creek

On Aug 4,1871 and July 26,1873 Jesse Robert E. Jenkins and Thomas Fredrick "Fed" Jenkins were born, respectively. We thought they were both born to Sarah "Sallie" Ellis and John Jackson Jenkins, but now we are not sure. They may have been born to her sister Martha "Mandy" Ellis; or to John's last wife Lou Kimrell.

Does anyone know of early records of births that I can access on the web? Or have records they can check for our family? We hope to get the right children to their parents. They had 15 all together!

Bless the mothers and father of those days who worked so hard for their families~ Cassandra

calling all descendants of Rawley or Raleigh Madding (1789-1855) !

Hello Madding/Roberson cousins,
The grave marker of Rawley Madding (1785-1855) was recently discovered in an overgrown, abandoned cemetery in the Bailey Springs area near Florence, Alabama. Rawley was born in Pittsylvania Co. VA, served in the War of 1812 and moved to Maury Co. in the 1820s where he lived until his death. He had 19 living children at the time of his death through marriages to Sally Mays and Sally Bridgeman. Many of these children ended up in N. AL, W. TN and W. KY including my own 3rd grandmother Anne T. Madding Roberson (wife of Wm. "Billy" Roberson) and many descendants lived (or still live) in the Obion Chapel area between Troy and Hornbeak, with other groups in Lake Co., Fulton Co. KY etc... A young Eagle Scout candidate, Davis Faulkner and his family, friends etc.. in the Florence, AL area are cleaning up, refencing, marking and preserving the cemetery and are planning to hold a dedication ceremony this Memorial Day. They are also looking for funds to help in the restoration of the cemetery (particularly refencing). Please contact me if you are interested in this project. Attached is a photo of Rawley's marker (long thought to have been buried in Maury Co. in an unmarked grave). This is a great project and they have already obtained historic cemetery designation from the State of Alabama. Only about 4 graves are still marked in this cemetery after 160 or so hard years! Help preserve our ancestor's memory for future generations!
I have a small packet of info that I can snail mail if interested.
This link will also take you to my posted info at the rootsweb world connect project:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dajones&I11.x=...
Thanks, David Jones in Richmond, MI, 4th great grandson of Rawley and Sally Mays Madding

In the 1820 Lawrence Co., AL census, Martin Guest is shown with 6 children, under 21, and a female (wife?) over 21. In 1825 two of his children get married in Lawrence Co., AL. Jane Guest marries Isaac Miller and Susanna Guest marries Wiley McDaniel. It is widely believed, but unproven, that the wife was Nancy Looney. If anyone has even a shred of information about this family, I would love to hear from you.......Jim Smith

Brown / Guess / McNutt / Looney

Am looking for the above surnames. I'm descended from John Brown who married Polly Black in 1820 in Lawrence County, Alabama.

John seems to have died ?1830s' or 40s? Not sure -- he just dissapears. 1850 census Mary and many children (some grandchildren as well) are in Walker County, Alabama -- no husband.

Their eldest son, David, married Harriet Guess/t 1841 in Shelby County, Tennessee. They are in Lawrence Co., Arkansas on 1850 census. 1860 census Mary and her kids and some grandkids are living in Lawrence County, Arkansas as well.

One of Mary's sons, Alfred, married adn had a daughter Mary A. Brown, age 6 1870 census. My Jeff Richey married Josie Brown (David adn Hariet's daughter) in the home of "Alph" Brown. On 1880 census there is Mary A. Brown, age 16, living with Jeff & Josie (Brown) Richey listed as "cousin". This is how we conclude David was Alfred's older brother, both sons of John and Mary Brown. We never have found Harriet's parents. Family story says Harriet was Sequoyah's great niece. No proof.

David and Hariet's daughter (my great grandma) moved to Indian territory when she got married in 1872 -- Sequoyah County/Le Flore Co, later to Chickasaw Nation. Where we are listed on 1900 Chickasaw census as WHITE. However autosomal DNA test that I took says we are mixed race, also having American Indian DNA. From others we are related to who have also taken the same test, it seems most likely that we get our Indian blood through the Brown/Guess(t) surnames that came out of Northern Alabama.

I know there are 3 John Brown's from Lawrence County mentioned in 1820 I am interested in stories I have seen about a Cherokee named John Brown from this region. I'd like to see documentation backing up claims of Cherokee heritage from the John Brown who married Hannah Rice. I have heard people talk of a John "Cherokee Jack" Brown, but also I've never seen or heard any documentation that ANYONE was ever called "Cherokee Jack".

I have read the only books I have found on the topic, yet none provided cited documentation of a primary source. I wish the authors had properly cited their references. My John Brown was about 20 years older than my Mary [Black] Brown, b. 1801 NC., so he may have had a previous wife.

In Lawrence County, Arkansas, David and Harriet [Guess/t] Brown raised orphans surnamed (Thomas) McNutt and (Nancy) Looney and I know of a Guess/t in N Alabama who married a McNutt, and there were also Looney's in Lawrence County, ALabama or near it, where my Brown's and probably Guess/t's were, as well.

Thank you in advance. :)

Vance Hawkins

The Smith Family of Lawrence County, Alabama

The Smith Family

One of the early Smiths to America from England was William Smith. He came over in 1684, and some of his descendants settled in Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. He may possibly be the ancestor of some of the Smith families who appeared in the 1850's in Hancock, Winston, Lawrence, and Morgan Counties of Alabama. This article addresses a line known to begin with Moses Smith. Moses was born in 1796 in South Carolina, and he married an Elizabeth, who was one year younger, also born in SC. They appear in the 1850 census of Hancock County, Alabama, with children William (22), Sarah (19), Henry (17), and Zachery (13) - all born in alabama. This means that Moses and Elizabeth were in Alabama by at least 1828.

In 1858 the name of Hancock County was changed to Winston, and Moses' son William Smith shows in the 1860 Winston County census. William appears as a farmer in the Serabo Post Office area (T10 R4 S5), with wife Mary (23), who was also born in Alabama. Their children at that time are David (8), Rebecca (6), William (4), Mary (2), and Jane (1). William's wife Mary would have been on 15 when she had David, not unusual in those days. Ten years later, the family still appears in Winston County (at the Houston Post Office area), with William as a Minister and having a second wife, Tallitha A. , age 30, born in Alabama. The children in 1870 are: David (18), Rebecca (16), William (14), Mary (11), Jane (9), George W. (8), Harriet (6) and Solomon (1) - all born in Alabama.

In 1880 David Smith at age 27 is enumerated among many Smith families of the Oakville precinct in Lawrence County, with his wife Nancy Jane Parker, age 38. He and Nancy were married in Lawrence County on July 2, 1871. she was the daughter of John T. Parker and Mary Neely. Children Roman L. Smith (7), Mary A. Smith (5), James D. Smith (3), and Martha J. Smith (4 months) are shown with their parents David and Nancy in the 1880 census of Lawrence County. By the time of the 1900 census, Nancy is gone, and David is shown at age 47 still in the Oakville precinct with no wife. At home is daughter Martha J., now age 20. Others in the home are: daughter Sena R.M. (17), son William H. (14), and two "brothers" of David - John (18) and Benjamin (14). These brothers must be half brothers born to his father William by William's second wife, Talitha.

In 1910 the census shows William H. Smith at age 25 in Lawrence County with wife Lucy, age 15. They were married in 1908 when Lucy was only 13 or 14. Lucy was the daughter of Daniel Smith, who was born in Alabama in July of 1865. Daniel and his wife Malissa were married in 1888 per the 1900 census records. That census shows them as living in the Pin Hook community of Lawrence County. Malissa was born in Alabama in February of 1869, and she had 4 children by 1900, but only 3 (all daughters) are still living at the time of the census. (**Note by Shannon Leigh Smith Adcock: This is incorrect. There were 2 daughters and one son, Shirley Daniel Bascom Smith) The census and Soundex records show their names as Treasy (Theresa?), Lucy, and Cherly (Shirly?). Treasy was born in March, 1889. Lucy was born in September, 1895, and Cherly was born in January 1898.

The 1910 census shows the firstborn child of William and Lucy Smith as Cordie L., age 1. In 1920, the famoly is enumerated in Oakville Precinct 7 (or 9?) and has grown to include Guy (9), Ruby (7), Cleveland (5), Ethel (2), and Moline (a few months old). More children were born later, but the census records are not yet released to show their names and ages. William H. owned land near Speake, and he and Lucy are buried in the Johnson Cemetery in that area. Their descendants mostly still live in the area to this day.

Submitted by: LCHBC and John P. Rankin, 103 Madison Avenue, Madison, AL 35758
Sources: Historical Southern Families Vol. IV, by John Bennett Boddie.
John Easley of Lawrence Co., AL & Unknown Son from MS?

I've been researching the line of John Easley in Lawrence County, AL because I have wondered about two of his unknown sons born before 1820. (Please see Virginia Easley DeMarce's file on rootsweb.) Also located in Lawrence Co. was the family of John May. Some of John Easley's and John May's children married in Lawrence County (not to each other, but to other spouses), and so I think that both families probably knew each other. A daughter of John May, Nancy Virginia, went to Itawamba County, MS and married my ancestor, William G. Easley in 1837. Some of John Easley's children and some of John May's children also came to Mississippi.

A cousin and I are researching the possibility that William G. Easley, b. abt. 1814-1816 in Tennessee, was one of the unknown sons of John Easley born before 1820. John Easley had one or more sons born in Tennessee, so he was in TN at one time. My cousin and I believe that it is possible that the Easley and May family knew each other in Lawrence County, Alabama and that Nancy Virginia May and William G. Easley may have both come from that county and then married in Itawamba County, Mississippi. We think they may have been the children of John Easley and John May. It would make a lot of sense, but we do not have proof at this point.

Does anyone out there have any possible theories and helpful information? Does anyone have any ideas on the ancestry of my William G. Easley? I would sincerely appreciate any help or theories you can give! Thank you in advance!!

They may have also resided in Oglethorpe County, GA. Davis was born about 1801 and his parents were Alexander Scoggins and Mary Gresham. I know nothing about Elizabeth. I believe I found her listed in the 1860 census in Lawrence County with a couple of her children. Would anyone have information about the deaths of Davis and Elizabeth? Their children included James, William, Martha, and Arbella.

Marriage record Lookup for Joseph Henry Moon

Would someone please do a lookup for a marriage record for Joseph Henry Moon birth May 12,1878. Lawrence Co AL. In the 1900 census Joe was still living at home with parents Jesse and Rosa or Rhoda Moon in Hillsboro dist of Lawrence Co AL. Joseph was listed as 22 years old. In 1918 on his draft record done on Sept 12,1918 he was listed as 40 years old. Married. He was listed as a chairmaker for his occupation. Address given as R.F.D.3 Moulton, Lawrence Co AL. Gives next of kin as wife Catherine Moon. So sometime between 1900 and 1918 he was married. I need to know the correct date of this marriage and find out what Catherine's last name was before her marriage to Joe. Surely this marriage took place either in Lawrence or one of the nearby counties. Will someone please go to courthouse there and do this lookup for me. I am willing to pay for it. I would appreciate the help so very much.
Thanks
Carolyn
