Intermarriages of CRAIG, MONTGOMERY & ALEXANDER families

There are several intermarriages between CRAIG, MONTGOMERY, and ALEXANDER families which I believe to be cousins.

My sons' are 6th G-Grandsons of James CRAIG, Sr. born 1735 PA through his son John CRAIG born 1764 York Co, PA. His two other sons were James CRAIG Jr. born 1760 in York Co, PA and David CRAIG born 1758 in York Co, PA. I've been trying to connect the allied family dots related to the marriages with the MONTGOMERY and ALEXANDER families.

3 children of David CRAIG and Mary DUNCAN married into MONTGOMERY or ALEXANDER families all married in Williamson Co, TN: James CRAIG and Jane ALEXANDER November 4, 1823, Margaret CRAIG and Alexander MONTGOMERY January 10, 1807, and Melinda CRAIG and William MONTGOMERY February 26, 1820. Who are the parents of these MONTGOMERY and ALEXANDER spouses? Are they related to the ALEXANDER or MONTGOMERY families below?

Then I have one son of James and Susan CRAIG, Jr., William W. CRAIG married Esther MONTGOMERY (daughter of James MONTGOMERY and Margaret WEIR)July 5, 1802, Blount Co, TN. Are these MONTGOMERY(s) related to those above or below?

And then 3 sons of John CRAIG and Martha WHITE married MONTGOMERY women: John P. CRAIG married Martha Patsy MONTGOMERY June 23, 1818 in Madison Co, AL, William E. CRAIG married Sarah Alexander MONTGOMERY September 27, 1817 in Madison Co, AL, both sisters and daughters of John MONTGOMERY & Margaret Peggy ALEXANDER, and then son Harvey CRAIG married Mary MONTGOMERY in 1826.

Some of these families lived and died in Limestone Co, AL and Lawrence Co, AL.

Is anyone researching these CRAIG, MONTGOMERY & ALEXANDER families?
Thank you,
LuAna Drake Craig
tutu.lu@characterlink.net
mrscraig@highstream.com

I was in Athens on 1/23/04 & found great data in the Archives at the annex, but time did not permit finding cemetery records that would have let me know where most of the Coffman's are buried. I understand that most were from the NW part of county, across the Elk River. After returning home, I was disappointed to find out that most of the records were not accessible via internet. My lineage is David Harmon Coffman > Lovell J > Lovell S. > James Alfred Coffman, my Gr.grandfather who is buried in Crockett Co., TN

I am the gr-grandson of Benjamin Franklin Wray born about 1844. His parents are believed to be James Bennett Wray and Mary Elizabeth Gordon, who moved from Tennessee to North Alabama. They were residents of Limestone County in 1850. However, after James Bennett Wray's death, Elizabeth, along with her children, moved to Morgan County, Alabama to be near other relatives. Children in 1860 still at home were: Martha E., William H., Ann E., Harrison, Benjamin, Cassandra C., and Henry. If you are connected to this Wray line, I would like to correspond with you. Thanks.

Charles Malcomb Flannagan and Mattie Rebecca King

Am seeking decendants of my Grandfather and Grandmother - Charles Malcomb Flannagan and Mattie Rebecca King.

I can find no info on Charles Malcomb. I found Mattie in the 1880 Census - she is the dau of William King and Malisa Cook. They also had Magge L. King; John W. King (I think he married a Maggie L. ?? with seven children - unk female, Hubert L., Nellie Marvin, Ida Louise, Laura L., Florence E. and Margurette A. King), and Charles M. King (I think he married a Norah M.?? with a child, Eva V. King).

Charles and Mattie had at least 13 children - Inez Zue Inder Lou Pearl m. Willie Eakes; Samuel; Sammie Miles m. ?? Springer, and Miles Rouse; Rubie Lee m. Walter McDave Adams; Martha E.; Buford M.; Nellie G.; Leona L. m. a Gatlin and a Schrimscher; Eunice Levonia m. Weldon H. Sailes; Marvin M.; Posey m Pauline Patrick; Julia Neller m. Robert Patrick; and possible a Jon A. Flannagan.

I am not sure about the Jon A. Flannagan. I found this on a World Family Tree. My mother, Eunice, never mentioned him. The "babies" were always Aunt Jean (Julia Neller) and Uncle Posey. I also thought that Aunt Sammie was a twin and the twin was Samuel, but that may be incorrect. Also mother said that she had a twin that died at birth or shortly thereafter named Leon.

If memory serves me correctly, there was a story that Charles was from along the TN border, fell in love with Mattie. He supposedly took her back across to TN and married her. He also was said to be quite a ladies man. He also was said to have lost a leg and had a "wooden leg."

I would like to hear from any decendants of those listed above and share any info. I especially would like information on William King, Malisa Cook and their decendants; and Charles Malcomb Flannagan.

Hope to hear from long lost relatives.

LeVonia Sailes Hughes

Amanda Jane Parker McCanless, daughter of John Tacticus Parker and Nancy Jane Lewis, was born in 1862 in Brazos County, Texas.

Her mother remarried after John died to Henry Perkins. Henry Perkins and Nancy Jane Lewis supposedly are buried near Pidgeon Roost, Sand Hill Texas. Not sure if it is a cemetery or just family land.

Amanda married Franklin Posey McCanless in Dec 1885 in Robertson County Texas. They had one son Jeff Howard McCanless born in 1886 in Robertson County Texas.

Another researcher has told me that Amanda died about 1892 in Groesbeck Texas which is in Limestone County.

I have called Limestone and Robertson County clerks offices and found out their death records start in 1903 and 1900 respectively.

I am posting this message in this message board in hopes that someone will recognize the people listed above and be able to fill in my blanks as to what happened to Amanda and hopefully know where she might be buried.

I know that Henry Perkins, her step-father and Nancy Jane Lewis Parker Perkins had children of their own. All I know is her half siblings names are Catrino Perkins, Calvin Thomas Perkins, William Warren Perkins, Nancy P. Perkins and Laura Mollie Perkins. Amanda had a full sister living in this household name Mary Parker who married Henry Spurling Johnston. Maybe there will be some descendents of these people doing research that might know something. If so, I will be very greatful.

Thank you,

Cheryl Wilcox

They had four children: Gussie Smith, Lula Mae Smith (b. 1899), Goldie Lee Smith(b. 1900), and Viola Smith(b. 1907). Shortly before Viola was born, Mary Jane left Monroe and took their three children and caught a ferry or boat. The last child, Viola, was apparently born after Mary Jane left Monroe.

Mary Jane's father (John Todd) met them at some point. Mary Jane ended up settling around Boaz, Alabama and remarried to a George Hooper. Lula Mae and Viola ended up marrying their step-brothers. My family doesn't know much about Monroe. I did find him listed in the 1920 Soundex for Limestone County. Do know that his daughter Tassie did locate Viola (sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's) and was arranging for Viola to go and meet him, but he died before this could happen.

I am assuming he was still in Limestone County. Goldie Lee Smith (my grandmother) married Dewey Samson Brown of Walker County, Georgia on January 31, 1926 in Alabama and lived the rest of her life there before passing away on July 28, 1996.

Would appreciate connecting with any of my distant cousins on this line and sharing any information about Monroe or best place to locate more info. about him or his descendents.

I know that Monroe divorced Mary Jane several years after she had left him in 1913 and remarried the same year to Okalonie Lewis. She had a few children already. Believe Monroe and Okalonie had one child together. Monroe's daughter Tassie married Joe Lewis, Okalonie's brother.

Thanks,
Tony Pope
Pope1966@aol.com
Smiths of Limestone Co, AL

I am searching for the parents of my Henry Smith who was born ( according to census records) 1810/1811 North Carolina
and died 29 Aug 1895 Pontotoc County, Mississippi. He is buried in the Pontotoc City Cemetery. He died at the age of 90 which would put his birth to abt 1805. 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records are consistent with his birth as 1810/1811.

He married Olive Elizabeth Mauldin about 1832 in Limestone County, AL. Olive Elizabeth was the daughter of Absalom Mauldin. He could be Abel Mauldin on the 1830 Limestone Co, AL census. Olive was born also about 1810/1811 and she would fit as Abel's daughter.

Also, on the 1830 Limestone County, AL census, I found these candidates to possibly be the family of my Henry Smith:

John N Smith with 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, and 1 female 40-50.

Edward Smith with 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 3 females 5-10, and 1 female 20-30.

James Smith 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-15, 3 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 3 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40.

I also find these Smiths on the 1820 Limestone Co, AL census in hopes to clarify a few things.

John Smith 2 3 1 1 6
James Smith 2 2 0 0 4
Henry Smith 1 2 1 0 4
John N Smith 2 1 1 0 4 0 2
Edward Smith 1 3 1 4 9 0 6

If it helps, these are the children of my Henry Smith.

Nancy Smith b. 1834 Limstone co, AL
Robert D Smith b. 1835/1836 Limestone Co, AL
William E Smith b. 1839 Limestone Co, AL
Joseph Smith b. 1840 Mississippi
Mary Courtney Smith b. 1842 Mississippi
Cynthia C Smith b. 1847 Pontotoc Co, MS ( named after Olive Elizabeth's mother, Cynthia Caroline Seale)
Carra Smith b. 1851 Pontotoc Co, MS

William E Smith married Elizabeth Wheatley in Pontotoc County, MS. His eldest son was named John E Smith b. 1864 Pontotoc Co, MS.

The intital E could stand for Edward. I found an Edward Smith who married a Winnie Bobbitt, daughter of Ishame Drury Bobbitt and Elizabeth James. Ihame Bobbitt is found on the 1790 and 1800 Spartanburg,SC census records along with Edward Smith in 1800. Edward and Winnie married between 1790 and 1800 in Spartanburg, SC. In records of Winnie's mother, she states that Edward and Winnie removed to Alabama and were never heard from again.

So, I wonder if this Edward Smith is the Edward who married Winnie Bobbitt that is on both the 1820 and 1830 census records and if they are the parents of my Henry Smith.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Oh, Edward Smith, husband of Winnie Bobbitt, his father was named Charles Smith who was born in Virginia.

Any info on the above Smiths in the census records will greatly help me narrow my search in finding the parents of my Henry Smith. I suspect they came from Virginia.

Rebecca Smith

Together, they had three children--Calvin Wallace, Jr., Horace Wallace., and Mary Alice Wallace..the last being born in Athens in 1925. He left the family sometime in or around 1926 or after and was believed to have been killed in either CA., or Texas...any information about him or any of his family would be greatly appreciated. The only other thing I know about him is that he may have had a brother named Frank Wallace.

Thank You,
Rebecca Harris

I'm researching Uriah Smith, born around 1770 in Virginia and died 1846 in Limestone County, Alabama. He appeared in the 1840 Limestone Co., AL census with at least two of his sons, and also in the 1830 Limestone Co. census:

1) Samuel Smith (born 1805 Virginia, died 28 Sep 1886, Limestone Co., Alabama
2) Henry Smith (birth and death unknown).

Is he the same Uriah Smith that appeared in the 1790-1820 Halifax Co., North Carolina censuses?
Henry Jackson Lentz Diary

In the diary of Henry Jackson Lentz, there is an Elizabeth Shoemaker mentioned 4 times while he lived in Limestone County Alabama. The entries and dates are as follows:
May 4, 1848--daughter born
September 23, 1849--child born dead
December 23, 1851--daughter born
August 21, 1852--child died
Unfortunately after he moved to Mississippi there are no more entries about Elizabeth Shoemaker. I believe that she is my 3rd great grandmother, but I need to know if there is anybody who has information on her to help me prove my relationship to her. I believe I know the names of two of her children, one boy(Joseph) and one girl(Nettie). Maybe somebody has come across her during their research and would be willing to share that information with me. I am hoping that somebody doing Lentz research for Limestone County Alabama might be able to help me with this matter.

Am trying to find information on the ancestors of John Wesley ROBERTSON (Originally named John Alexander Robertson)
....Born abt. 1876, in TN, but was raised in AL. Much of his family settled in Athens, AL.

John Wesley ROBERTSON's father was Woodson/Wootson ROBERTSON
His mother was Julia (Judy) Ann CLARK ROBERTSON; she married a Mr.SHEPPARD several years after Woodson ROBERTSON died.

John Wesley ROBERTSON had siblings: Will; Jim; Roy; George;
Polly; and Sally Minerva. John Wesley moved to TX around 1905, and some of his brothers came later to work with him in the sawmill/lumber business. But, the brothers later returned to AL to live. George ROBERTSON reportedly settled in Athens, Limestone Co., AL.

I am at a dead-end with this family, and would like to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of them. I understand that some of the ROBERTSON descendants still live in AL.

I would appreciate any leads you could pass my way; John Wesley ROBERTSON was my Grandfather.

Many thanks, Clarece Allen ccrallen@hotmail.com

Hello,
I am looking for the parents of my G.G.Grandfather, William Dawson. From his obituary I have learned that he was born in Limestone Co., Alabama on 22 March 1832. He joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church in 1848 and entered the ministry in April of 1852.

He married Phoebe "Tee" Sawyers in Lincoln Co., Tenn. 0n 14 Oct 1860. He served in the Civil War and afterwards relocated to Van Zandt Co., Texas where he served as a minister for the next 40 years. He died in 1914.

Although the biographical sketch of him in the obituary was very detailed it did not mention his parents or any siblings he may have had. From census records it looks like the family originally came from South Carolina.

If this rings a bell with any of you who might have a connection to him please let me know. I will be happy to share the information I have on him after they relocated to Texas.

All my best,

Devon Dawson

I know the the above two people were married April 22, 1833 in Limestone Co. Alabama. I do not know where they came from to be there at this time. They are my gggrandparents, I have no idea who their parents are, I have been told that a John Lockmiller or Loughmiller is Sarahs father, not proven. As far as Fisher John Jackson I have seen that he was possibly born in Alabama or Ten. Any help will be greatly appreciated. They both died in Ark. he in 1898 and she in 1899. Thanks, John J.

William Rottenberry, son of James and Cornelia Rottenberry

Does anyone know what became of this William Rottenberry, born abt 1858?

I have spent 20 years looking for William Faughtenbery (Fortenberry), born abt 1860 in AL.

A few facts seem similar: William Rottenberry seems to be illiterate for a time, as does Faughtenbery. Both had fathers die in the Civil War, and moms remarried.

I find William Fortenberry several places in Shelby Co AL in 1880, but never before 1880. I figured it was time to be open-minded for the strange.

My William Faughtenbery (Fortenberry) ended up moving to NE Texas in the 1880's and then moved from SE Oklahoma to SW Arkansas. He died in 1935.

Can anyone help me?
E-mail Lisa at threeeagles@earthlink.net.
Thanks.
