I have came to a road block with Isaac (Palmer?) Allred, last know residence was 1870 Eastern subdivision, Marion Co, AL. His wife Ellender "Nellie" Gregory (1820)was listed as a widow by 1880. Would love to find out where they are both buried as most all his kids are buried over in MS at Kirkville Cemetery, Itawaba co. Census shows he was born in 1816 or 1817 in KY, not sure if this could also be TN, would love to find out more as to locate his parents. I am hoping to get out your way one day, I appreciate any thing you can find for me. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Would anyone have probate records for about 1900? Lucinda Ray Ables or Abel was listed living with her husband in the Glen Allen Al area in the 1900 census. I know she died shortly after 1900 but I can not find a record about when or where she died. Would anyone have probate records that would shw when and where she died and where she was buried? Thanks,ROss

Mike: thank you for your act of genealogical kindness. I am trying to identify "Brother Higgins", mentioned in a letter ca 1844 written in Marion County. The letter, written by Absalom Porter Dowdle, told life on the plantation of John Daniel Holliday and his wife, Catherine Higgins Holliday. She had a son named Benj. who might have gone by the surname of Higgins. I'm trying to learn if "Brother Higgins" is her son or if not, who it is.

I have not been able to find a Benj. Higgins in any census of that era or a Benj. Jones, which would have been the surname of his father. I hope someone can help me identify this man. Benj. was born bet. 1818 and 1820.

Thanks for any clues,
Glenna

Am researching White family who came to Pikeville area around 1850-1852. James and John White, specifically. John is thought to be son of James and mother of my ancestor Elizabeth White who married Meredith Duke. Meredith Duke bought 40 acres adjacent to White land purchases. Absolutely no info, but am grasping at any straw I can find. Do you know anything about your Wm Terrell White other than his birthplace....like when he left Marion County?
I have been researching the Watley line and think we maybe connected. My Watleys were from Tennessee and then moved to Alabama. i start with a Bertie Watley b. 1888 or 1889. I found her in a 1900 census with siblings, Alvy,Virgil L.,and Harley. They lived in Grundy Cty., TN. Head of Household was Burrol Watley, Spouse Nancy J.In 1910 Burl Watley was living with spouse Jennie, children, Alra, Logan, Maggie and a male named Tom Thomas. They lived in Jefferson Cty., Al.. Birmingham.Burrell's death was listed as 06 Dec 1911. I have Bertie's death certificate and it names her parents as L.B. Watley and Jennie Watley. Bertie died in Jefferson Cty.,Birmingham,AL. I beleieve this is too much of a coincidence, but I would like more proof. Alva B. Watley is buried in Quintown Cemetery in Alabama. Kathy

I have a "Polly Ann Wren" listed in our family Bible as the mother of "William James Wren" who married "Julia" (do not know her maiden name). William James Wren and Julia Wren are my great great grandparents. William James Wren was born in Red Bay, Alabama which is just across the state line from Itawamba county Mississippi. I have several relatives from Itawamba county. I have been searching for William James Wren's parents. I'm not sure if this is a match or not.

Phil Wren

Index of Vital Records for Alabama: Deaths, 1908-1959 (Ancestry)

There aren't any William Johnsons who died 1900 - 1910 in the index for Marion county. There are many William Johnsons for the state of Alabama (too many to list).

However, in other counties, there are 2 William W Johnsons who died 1900-1910:

Name: William W Johnson
Death Date: 28 Aug 1913
Death County: Winston
Volume: 37
Certificate: 417
Roll: 1

Name: William W Johnson
Death Date: 23 Jul 1916
Death County: Pike
Volume: 35
Certificate: 145
Roll: 1

I don't know if this helps because the index isn't very detailed, but it might give you a lead.

You might look through the cemeteries here: http://www.usgwarchives.org/al/marion/cemetery.htm. He might be here so that you can get a specific date.

Good luck in your search.

yes, i guess you could say it's my line, actually Daniel's daughter, Amanda was my step-g-grandmother....but she was the only grandmother my mom knew...moms real grandmother, Nancy Gilbreath Campbell, died before they left DeKalb Co. Al. and Booker T. Campbell remarried to Amanda....
i use to work with a Bishop man, i asked him about this and he said he was no reltion but he was the spitting image of Amanda, so i figure there is a kinship there somewhere.
Amanda and my g-grandfather, Booker T. Campbell are buried at Shady Grove cem. between Phil Campbell and Hackleburg Al.
the family lived just over the Marion Co. line but went to church at Shady Grove in Franklin Co.

I too am trying to make a connection to the Bishops of Marion County. My ggg-grandmother, Margaret Bishop was born in 1822 in SC and married George A. Hughey in Coosa County, AL in 1838. I have searched the census for her and found lots of Bishops but so far can not find her parents. I have a census record for a Daniel Bishop whose parents are Jesse and Agnes Bishop. Is this your line? Most of the Bishops I have info on are from the Allen and Margaret Lewis Bishop line in Marion County but so far I can not connect my Margaret to them.

Below is the content of a post from Mike Lindsey in reply to my query regarding the female living with in Littleton's HH in 1880:

"I is almost certain that the Mary Lindsey, living in the home of Littelton , is a daughter of Hilliard Sparks Lindsey ,Sr. and his wife Mary (Stone) Lindsey. If this is the correct Mary ,her sons were born out of wedlock. Her father died abt. 1858 and probaly before 1860. His last child, a son named Littelton, was born in the late 1850 `s. I can`t find Hilliard , Sr. after 1860.
Mary ,his wife, is buried in a small Lindsey Family Cem. ,located east of Smithville, in Monroe Co.,Ms. One of her son`s , William Riley ( Rile ), is buried beside her.
Mike Lindsey"

Hope this helps.

I am a descendant of Watson Franks b. Nov. 1869 Alabama who married Diaffie A. Shug Harbin b. 24th April, 1877 Alabama. I believe that Watson is Andrew Watson Franks and Diaffie is Diaffie Adeline Shug Harbin. Birth dates match and I found in Family Search a marriage that matches them in the 1900 Spruce Pine, Franklin, Alabama Census. It states D.A. Harbin (female)
married A.W. Franks 24th Nov. 1895 Lawrence, Alabama and on the marriage certificate it has Diaffie's birth as 24th April 1877. In the 1900 census it states they were married 4 years est. 1896. In the 1900 Spruce Pine, Franklin, Alabama Census lists family # 57 Elisha E. Franks b. Feb. 1879, 21, AL. and Allice V. Franks b. Mar.1883, 17, Alabama. It states they were married 0 yrs. est. 1900.

1 Watson Franks b. Nov. 18, 1869 AL.
+ Diaffie A. Harbin b. April 24, 1877 AL.
2 Trixie Maetta Franks b.
and i forgot to add that yhe fact that the labor used on these plantations being slave labor had nothing to do with the large farms being called plantations.

i noticed that prior to 1865 large farms were called plantations but by 1870 were farms regardless of size.
looking at southern plantations i would asume a plantation was a large tract of land used to grow and cultivate crops that were intended for distant or foriegn markets instead of local markets.
