Wood and Williams families in Marion Co., AL

I would like to connect with anyone researching these families:
Moses and Alisy Wood or Woods from SC- moved to Marion Co. before 1840 and were still alive there in 1860. I don't know all of their children, but they had Aaron Wood b c. 1810 SC and married to Nancy b. 1815 in TN. I think they had about 13 children, all born in AL between abt 1825 and 1850: William, Lucy, Lewis, Moses Daniel, Melisa/Mary C., Disa, Rebecca Elisabeth, Louisa, Hiram James, Nancy Ann, Salisa "Alsy", Joseph M., and Martha E. "Patsy" Wood.

Rebecca Elisabeth Wood was born abt 1840 and married William Pinkney Williams b 1840. He was a neighbor in Marion Co (Pikeville), the son of John T. Williams and wife Nancy. John and Nancy were both born abt 1815 in GA. John died of typhoid fever in Sept 1869 in Marion Co. They had 6 children: Thomas, William Pinkney, James M., Franklin, Nathan R. (Robert?), and Martha C. (Mary?) Williams. The first 4 children were born in GA and the last 2 were born in Marion Co.

William Pinkney Williams may have died in the War- Rebecca E. is a widow with a 7 year old son, John W. Williams, in 1870 (Pikeville, Marion, AL). By 1872 she married a widowed neighbor, Benjamin D. Haney and moved to Franklin Co., AL.

I am still trying to locate gravesites for all of these ancestors.

If you recognize any of these people, please contact me. I have many gaps that need to be filled in.
Thanks, Deb

I am looking for old records and documents concerning people, places and events that could help me. I am trying to consolidate information about Pikeville and Marion County, especially before 1880, in order to write a book. There is so much history that is disappearing in this area that can never be reclaimed if it is not gathered now. I have information about Judge Terrell but what about sheriffs, court judges, court clerks, ministers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, carpenters, blacksmiths, Rev. War vets, Mexican War vets, War of 1812 vets, Indian Wars vets, Civil war vets, anything that could be used to add to the history. Please email me if you have info or can help.
Thanks
Jerome

THOMAS AND SADIE BYRD'S CHILDREN

I am searching for the parents my 3 Byrds. I believe they may be the children of Thomas and Sada or Sadie Byrd.

THIS HAS BEEN MY BRICKWALL FOREVER! If anyone can help me figure out if my Byrds belong to Thomas and Sada Byrd that would be great.

I have found Thomas and Sadie Byrd/Bird in Marion County, Alabama and also Gilmores which my Lydia Byrd married.

My 3 Byrds are brothers and sister.

I have found some family trees on Rootsweb that show Thomas and Sadie and they show children, but not mine. But my 3 Byrds would fit in with these children.

My Byrds are:

Robert E. Byrd born February 22, 1829. Married Elizabeth Eddleman. On multiple censuses he states he was born in Mississippi, his father was born in Tenneessee and mother in Kentucky. This would work as Thomas was born in Tennessee and Sada in Kentucky!! I have found Robert in Izard County, Arkansas. He then moved to Parker County, Texas, Young County, Texas, then to Kent County, Texas and finally Scurry County, Texas.

Lydia Ann Byrd born January 12, 1826 in Mississippi. Married Andrew Gilmore in Marion County, Alabama. They also moved to Izard County, Arkansas and then to Texas.

A.J. Byrd born December 1830 in Mississippi. I have found him in Texas.

I checked the Mississippi 1830 census records and found that Thomas had 3 white males under the age of 10. This would work for my Robert and A.J. Also he had 1 female under 10 and this would account for Lydia.

Lydia was in Marion county, Alabama and married. This helps by putting her in the same 2 states with Thomas and Sada as they were also in Mississippi and both in Marion county, Alabama.

My Robert E. Byrd had a son named Thomas. Lydia had a daughter named Sada. This helps my cause for my Byrds to belong to Thomas and Sada. I know Thomas is a common name, but Sada is more hard to find.

I have checked the index of the Alabama 1840 census and Thomas is there, but I have not looked at the actual page for him with his family.

If anybody can help me with my 3 Byrds that would be great.
I understand the Court House burned.

Am looking for a Thomas Webb line that was in Marion County at least from 1830 to 1870. Believe he might have married a daughter of Thadius Walker who was also in Marion County, AL. Believe some of his sons were Elijah Webb and Silas L. Webb. This marriage may not have occurred in Marion County.

Believe Thomas married second to Nancy Webster who was 25 years younger than him and they had 7-8 additional children. Believe this marriage did occur in Marion County.

Any help would be appreciated.

kimbrell article

The Times-Record Fayette County ’s Newspaper Wednesday, July 2, 2008 First Baptist Church honors Kimbrell

On Sunday, June 22, Fayette First Baptist Church helped its oldest member celebrate his 99th birthday.

Fuller Kimbrell, the 10th of 14 children of the Rev. and Mrs. W.A. Kimbrell, grew up on a farm three miles north of Berry, in Fayette County.

Their family began every meal with grace and read the Bible every day, a habit that Mr. Kimbrell has to this day.   They went to church every Sunday, even when it meant riding in a wagon or walking several miles on a dirt road; studied their Sunday School lessons and sat on the front row.

Family has always been very important and is evidenced by family members present with him as the Fayette First Baptist church helps celebrate his birthday.
His family comes from a long line of Baptist ministers–-Mr. Kimbrell’s father, great-grandfather, two brothers and six nephews and great-nephews were all ministers.

Mr. Kimbrell’s father was the Fayette County Baptist Association missionary for many years; served as clerk of the association for six years, 1919 through 1924; and preached in many churches in Fayette County and surrounding counties.

The family’s home church was Bethabara. The Rev. and Mrs. Kimbrell moved to Fayette and joined FFBC on June 20,1945, where they were active members in their declining years.
Mr. Kimbrell, with this religious background, naturally began teaching Sunday School when he was only 12 years old, teaching a total of over 30 years in different churches.

He moved his church letter to FFBC Nov. 23, 1948 and soon began teaching in the Jr. Sunday School Department.  He also served on the Alabama Baptist Executive Board.

The Kimbrell family has a long history of 63 years in the Fayette First Baptist Church.
The Lord gave Mr. Kimbrell many gifts. He has the gift of memory and is a wonderful storyteller. He also has a good mind and the ability to put his memories into written words. His stories and memories give all who know him the gift of their own memories.

Another gift he was given is that of leadership which he has used for over 60 years to benefit Fayette, Fayette County and Alabama. Health, long life, and optimism are gifts he is grateful for.  In an interview on his 95th birthday, he said he “still had a lot of work to do.”  He has written two books and is working on a third on growing up in rural Fayette County, Alabama, all since he turned 90 years old.
When finishing high school and realizing there was no possibility of attending college, he was talking with his mother about what a wonderful opportunity it would be to attend college.

“I’ve never forgotten my mother’s answer, ‘If you remember in the Bible, King Solomon prayed for knowledge, but never mentioned education.  You gain knowledge by looking, listening, and giving serious thought to everything that happens in your everyday life.  The lessons taught in the Book of Proverbs are the best examples you can find or read to gain knowledge. ’ I have read the Book of Proverbs, and thought of what she said a hundred times.
“I have lived and am still living a good, rich, full life. I have been and am still well blessed. I am proud I have been able to contribute to my community, county and state, numerous things that have made a positive difference.   Always, in my prayers, I’ve asked the Lord to grant that my community, county, state and nation may be a better place for me having lived in it. ”

As Fayette First Baptist Church nears its 108th birthday on July 22, 2008, the congregation remembers the many blessings of those years and those who have gone on before.  They look forward to the future and how God will use them for His glory.

I'm looking for information regarding my g-g-grandfather. His name was James Marlin Robinson. He was born in Marion Co., Alabama on Oct. 16, 1823. He went to a Medical College in Mississippi. He married Lucinda McDonald (b: 1825 d:1849). They had at least three children: Elizabeth (b: 1841, d:?), Mary (b: 1843 d: 1862), John W. (b: 1846 d:?). James moved to Bellefonte, Boone Co., Arkansas, where he died on May 28, 1894. I suspect he moved after Lucinda died, but I'm not sure. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

He knew a Bessie Brewer, who was born in Hackleburg, Alabama in 1911. Bessie was the daughter of Thomas A. Brewer (born 1878) and Dora A. Harbin (born 1889).
My gr-great grandfather was Theophilus Pierce. My great grandmother's obituary states he and his wife Betty(?) Ferguson were born in NC and came to Mississippi about 1850. They settled in Tishomingo Co. around Jackson's Camp. He was born in 1815 and died in 1911 in Itawamba Co. He enlisted in the 26th regiment of MS for the Confederates. His children were Bushrod(who went to Washington), Pedro(went to Texas), Robert(who went to Oklahoma), Lucinda, Fannie, and Amanda(my gr-grandmother).
I can't find any information on him before the 1870's after he had married Anna Yegear. Oral Family legend says he was part Cherokee. Any information would we appreciated.

Lee family in Marion & Fayette counties

My gggrandfather was John Clinton Lee and according to the 1860 census lived in Marion County, AL. He married Mary Gann. He served in Co. F, 43rd AL Infantry during the Civil War and he died at home in 1867 of TB. He and Mary are buried at Mt. Willing FWB church cemetery in Fayette County and that is the area in which he lived. According to the census he was a tanner by trade and he was born in AL. He had a brother, David Lee, who was a shoemaker, and he was born in GA. According to another geneologist this is his line:

COL Richard Lee b. 1619
Hancock Lee b. 1653
Richard Lee b. 1691
CPT Thomas Lee b. 1729
James Lee b. 1770
William Lee b. 1790
John Clinton Lee b. 1830

David Lee (bro.) b. 1823

However I cannot verify any of this. They just don't add up. Can any one help?

John and Mary had several children but the daughter is the only name I have and I come from her, Mary Alice, who married William T. Wisham. They are also buried at Mt. Willing. William and Mary Alice had several children.

Susan married Dave Gann
Elizabeth married John "Kid" Guin
Delia married Phinas "Peanut" Knight"
Walter (my grandfather) married Jane Johnson
Frank never married

Any help on this Lee line would be appreciated.
Jerome
I can not find him again until the 1880 Census in Izard Co., Arkansas. When did he leave Marion Co. and did he go anywhere else before he went to Izard Co.?
But we know nothing of his life between birth and death. Does anyone have him in their database? His parents were John "Jack" Jackson Jenkins and either Sallie or Mandy Ellis. We aren't sure which of the sisters was his mother. That would help tremendously to know, too! I am hoping we can track down children if he had any.

Thanks so much.

I am looking for info on Ica Northington and his wife Arminda Lockridge. I have been told and have read that they [along with 2 daughters Mary and Cederah] were murdered by the Tories. Now I have been to the cemetery were they are buried and seen the headstones. It seems that Ica was killed first, then later the others were killed. Is this right? Were they killed near their buriel place? I have read "Tories of the Hills" by Wesley Thompson and found no mention of the murders. Could this info be found in another book or documents?

I am currently seeking information on Miles Purvis born ca 1837 in Alabama. I think he may have been born in Marion Co. but I am not positive. His mother was Sarah Roebuck, daughter of John Roebuck 1760-1853.

I have no information on Miles' father other than his surname and that he was born in Kentucky. Sarah Roebuck and the unknown Purvis had another son that I know of but dont know much about named William Purvis.

I know that Miles and William both served in the Confederate army during the Civil War.

If anyone has any possible information on either William Purvis or his father please let me know.
LOLLEY, MOURNING FLOWERS, MORNING WHITE DOVE

I'd like to make some clarifications of an earlier post, I had several "facts" wrong, and although I'm embarrassed, I'll take this as a learning experience. One thing I've learned is to not always rely on family memories, and also to check and double check "facts". Now having said that, after I post the corrected info., I would still like feedback on some additional info. I've found.

First things first, I was told we had Native American ancestry, I assumed Cherokee, because, when doing a search, on who I THOUGHT was my g-grandpa, MONROE LOLLEY, it directly linked him to a Cherokee woman, MORNING DOVE WHITE(MANSELL), and her mom, MOURNING FLOWERS. Turns out, MONROE, isn't my g-grandpa, but the nephew of my g-grandpa, FREEMAN LOLLEY. The reason I assumed that wrong relationship, is because I have always been told that my g-grandpas' middle name was MONROE, so when I found his name, I just went with it. Huge Mistake. For the record, I still have always been told we had Native American, Black Dutch, and Scotts-Irish ancestry.

2nd mistake- I had some of the relationships wrong, the corrected info:

HENRY LOLLEY married AMERICA (COLE) LOLLEY, their son was my g-grandpa, FREEMAN LOLLEY, and JAMES JOSEPH LOLLEY was FREEMANs' brother(not dad). MONROE was the son of JAMES JOSEPH LOLLEY, and the nephew of my g-grandpa.

3rd mistake-My mother told me that my g-grandpa had a 2nd family, and that she'd met them as a child, first off, my mother is disabled and gets confused sometimes, and I shouldn't have taken her words as gospel, until I did some fact checking. I said that my g-grandpa was married to a woman with the last name KENEDY, but in reality, it was MONROE who had a wife named LINNEY KENNEDY, my g-grandma is ETHEL(McCAIG)LOLLEY. I'm sure my mother did meet up with different relatives, etc. in Hackleburg, but it wasn't a "2nd" family. another reason I took to that info. so readily is that (unless I'm wrong, yikes), is that both MONROE, and FREEMAN supposedly died in March 1990, like I said that too could be wrong. So I kinda believed I was speaking of the same person.
I was correct in the names of the children, FREEMAN and ETHEL had, and the names of the children my grandmother, GLADYS had, whew!

Now, what I need help fact checking on is the ancestry of my g-grandma, ETHEL, I'll try not to get too confusing. When I did the search on the wrong name, MONROE, it said he was related to ELVIS PRESLEY, they both shared the same 3rd g-grandma, Morning Dove White. Well when I did a search on my g-grandma, ETHEL McCAIG LOLLEY, it too, says she's related to ELVIS, but that it's because they share grandpas, 9th g-gr.pa for ETHEL, and 8th g-gr.pa for ELVIS, it goes like this, atleast when you see if the name your searching is related to someone famous:

9th G-Grandpa of ETHEL McCAIG-----8th G-Grandpa of ELVIS

**WILLIAM POWELL**

(THE LEFT COLUMN DOWNWARD) (THE RIGHT COLUMN DOWNWARD)

his son, GEORGE POWELL his daughter,ALICE POWELL
his daughter, AGNES POWELL her son, Robert Warren
her daughter, AGNES COCKE His son, ROBERT WARREN
her son, JOSEPH HARWOOD his son, S.JOHN WARREN
his daughter, REBECCA HARWOOD his son, WILLIAM D. WARREN
her daughter, MARY LONGBOTTOM his dtr.,MARY L. WARREN
her daughter, JEAN McGEE her dtr., MINNIE MAE HOOD
her son, JESSE McGEE her son, VERNON PRESLEY
his son, WILLIAM McGEE his son, ELVIS PRESLEY
his son, PINKNEY RAY McCAIG
*why is Pinkneys' last name diff.?
his daughter, ETHEL McCAIG

**Now I know why the Genealogists should get the big bucks!!

Family of Joab Hardon in 1900 Census - Bluford Hardin?

I have found a family listed in the 1900 Census of Marion County - Household #70 in Beat No. 16, Pikeville - where the family is listed as Joab A. Hardon age 40, Jane S. age 47, William H age 19, Nancy E. age 17, Luther B. age 14, Ressie age 8, RAnnon age 5, Clint age 3. It states that Joab and Jane have been married 10 years and she has 3 children.

DOes anyone know if this is B. Bluford Hardin. The names and ages of the first 3 children fit the names of the children of Martha J. Webb Hardin from the will of Wm Webb. If so who are the other 3 children? Also who is Joab A.?

If this is not the J. Bluford Hardin family, does anyone know where they were in 1900?

Any help in unraveling this question would be appreciated.
