The census records were in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, DC piled in an unlocked file room and on Jan 10, 1921 there was a fire and the records were mostly water damaged and were kept around until 1934 when congress authorized their destruction. In 1942 the surviving Ill. records were found. In 1953 they found the surviving Al, Ga, Minn, NJ, NY, NC, Oh, SD, Texas and DC records.
