I am seeking information on my ancestors, Eli Franklin Brown from Pike Co. AL (1892-1983)and his father Littleton B. Brown (1866-1915) who lived his whole life in Troy. I believe Littleton and his wife Susan White are buried in Ramah Primative Baptist Church Cemetery. Census records indicate that Littleton's father was James Brown, born in Georgia. I would like to hear from anyone who is also tracing this line.

Beverly Quance Baugham
sando99@mindspring.com

Jeanette Macon was my grandfathers sister. She never married. I remember attending her funeral as a child, but her headstone in Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery only reads 1888 - 1957. The 1900 census shows that she was born August 1888. I don't find her in the AL Death Index. If anyone has access to specific dates for her I would appreciate it.

My GGrandfathers, William J. Hill and William M. Bray lived in Pike County for many years. W. Hill married Eunicy Ann McDaniels and later died in the Civil War abt. mid 1864. I believe Eunicy died around 1870 or 72 because Jefferson Bray was made guardian of James Hill. W. Bray lived until 1895 but I believe Mary Christiana Whatley died in the early 70's. Please, if you know anything about these families, let me know. I will share what I do have at this time. God Bless, Laura M. Jones

Could someone please help me? I have info that a ggggrand father John M. Thompson might have married a Jane in Pike Co., Al. in 1837. Does anyone know if Pike Co., has records that go that far back? I am trying to find out what Jane's maiden name was. I have not been able to find them on the 1850 census. They would have been in Arkansas by then. Thanks

Simmons, friend and political opponent, supposively had the name of the Pike county seat changed from Zebulon to Troy to honor his friend ( Garret's "Public Men of Alabama", 1872). Alexander (1767-1841) served as Solicitor General of NC for 30 years and is my great- great- great grandfather. Does the Pike County Historical Society or Troy State University have one? I would like a copy if possible.

No marriage record was found in Montgomery Co., AL (where Calvin was living in the 1860 census with his first wife Elizabeth Goodson, and 3 of their 4 children). He enlisted for the Civil War in March 1862 in Pike Co., so he might have applied for a marriage license there as well.

Are there marriage lookups available for Pike Co., or do I need to contact the Pike Co. Historical Society for assistance? Thanks for any and all guidance!

Researching the JEFFCOAT family of Lexington Dst., SC and Pike/Crenshaw Co., AL. The second wife of John Nicholas FOLMAR (1785-1840) is known though family tradition as Elizabeth C. JEFFCOAT (b. ca 1814 GA, died after 1870 when in Pike Co., AL). Was she born a WYATT, and married first to a JEFFCOAT? After J. N. FOLMAR's death, she lived with Wm. Conquest WYATT in Autauga Co., AL in 1850 (possible brother?) who had previously lived in Pike Co., AL. In 1860 and and 1870, she lived in Pike Co., AL near the families of Henry and Melinda (WYATT) JEFFCOAT who married in 1834, and Reubin and Fanny (WYATT) JEFFCOAT who married in 1836, all in Pike Co. If Elizabeth was a WYATT, and married a JEFFCOAT before marrying J. N. FOLMAR, that first marriage could have taken place either in SC, or in Pike Co. before 1832.
RIALS (etc.) c1850 in Pike Co

I'm looking for the family of Edmund (aka "J.E.V.") RIALS (and other spellings) who was born in Dallas County AL in 1830.

1848 he was in Pike County, married to Elizabeth GRANTHAM. (Or so she said - no one has found a marriage record and she was with her parents in the 1850 Pike Co census.)

By 1860 Edmund was in Winn Parish, LA. He seems to have traveled with a son (Henry) of Jacob Rials also of Pike Co. His wife's brother, John Grantham, married a daughter (Sarah) of Jacob Riles.

There is some speculation that Edmund was a son of Jacob, but the problem is that in the 1850 Pike Co census Jacob had a ten year old in his household named Edmund (Edmond). Was this an age goof on the censustaker's part? A case of same names in the household? After all, Jacob had a son named Henry and a another son named John Henry. As stated above, my Edmund was actually "J. Edmund V. Rials", and some of the family has always thought the J was for John.

Or maybe Edmund was a relation of Jacob's? It's weird the way there are so many Rials female heads of household for the 1850 Pike Co census. Any info to help sort out these different Rials families in 1850 Pike Co is welcome!

Thanks, Shari

P.S. I know that GC boards are now gatewayed to the corresponding RW mailing list. Please direct reponses to the GC board indicated as I'm not on the Pike Co mailing list at the moment. :)

I am researching Bula Winford Slappey/Slappy who was the daughter of John Alexander Slappey & Mary Jane Dupree. Bula married Jeremiah Carr in Worth County, GA. I read one of the postings which said there are quite a few of the Slappey's still living in Georgia and Alabama. Bula was born in Feb 1876. She and Jeremiah had two children that I know of (might be more); they were: Willie Vileta Carr and Benton Carr.

Does anyone know anything else about Jeremiah & Bula? I did find them in the 1900 Pike County, Alabama census but after that I can't find anything on them. I didn't know if they might have returned to Worth County or that area.

Thanks in advance for any help!
The records of the Robert and Jane Berry family, who came to South Carolina from Northern Ireland in 1768 state that two of the daughters of the immigrant son Richard, married and moved to Alabama. Through this query board, I located links to the descendants of William Livingston and Ann Berry. I do not have the given names of the Herndon male or the Berry female, but it is quite likely that the Herndon and Livingston families moved to Alabama about the same time and perhaps settled in the same area. From the birth records of the Livingston children, that would have been around the 1820s.

Does anyone have any information about a Herndon family who came to Alabama about that time period from South Carolina? Even if you know of a family group that could fit this description and it wasn't at exactly the same time, or perhaps settled in another county, I would appreciate knowing about it. I am researching this Berry family and I would so much like to be able to include this line of the descendants. I will also gladly share information.

Bettie Berry
Charleston, SC

William Livingston, born 1769; married Ann Berry in the Orangeburgh District of South Carolina. Both William and Ann died in Pike Co., AL. Ann Livingston, born Bet 1800 - 1805 in SC.
3. John Livington, born Jan. 3, 1903 in SC; died 1870 in Coosa Co., AL
4. Samuel Benjamin Livingston, born Sept. 15, 1815 in SC; died June 15, 1900 in Pike Co. AL. Married Rebecca Elizabeth Rast, d/o Joseph Rast and Martha Harris; born 1828; died 1899 in Pike Co., AL.
5. Abraham L. Livingston, born Feb. 27, 1820 in SC.; died Jan. 10, 1905 in Pike Co., AL.
6. Catherine Livingston, born 1825 in SC.
7. David Livingston, born 1827 in AL; died in Montgomery Co., AL.

I am researching the Robert and Jane Berry family, who came to South Carolina from Northern Ireland in 1768 and settled in the old Orangeburgh District, near what is present-day Branchville. I've really only been able to go back to his father's grandfather William Fox Hughes who was married to Lena Lee Hudson. They had five children: Dick Hughes, Gus Henry Hughes, Avis Hughes, Wilson Hughes, and William Hughes. They lived somewhere about Pike county, AL in the late 1800's. I've been able to find Lena Hudson's parents, but I'm at a stand still after that, again. If anyone at all is able to give me any information I would really appricate it. Thanks before hand!
John was the son of Daniel McEachern and (unknown) McNeill. John and Elizabeth moved to Pike Co., AL in 1840 and included in their census for that year. They had 8 children, Margaret, Elizabeth, James D., Mary, and Sarah are names that are known. Governor George Corley Wallace is a descendant of that family. Trying to fill in the blanks of this family.

Am researching THOMAS, WEST, MORRISON, BOSWELL, GILMORE, SELLERS in Thomasville/Iverness, Pike/Bullock, AL. 1830's-1870's. Would like to know if there is anyone who could help locate Probate records of Guardianship for Alonzo and Edward Thomas, sons of Asa G. and Sarah Elizabeth (MORRISON) THOMAS to Wade H. THOMAS after their deaths. It is thought that they may have succumed to a small pox epidemic during the period of 1859-1861 as several family members died during this time. Also looking for incompetency proceedings paperwork against James THOMAS. Time frame on these papers would be about 1859-1861. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and additional info. most welcome. Would also like to know of cemeteries in this area, would love to find burial place for James THOMAS and wife Mary, James D.THOMAS and wife Catherine, Asa G THOMAS and wife Sarah. Thank you in advance....
Carrie THOMAS-DOMINGUEZ
I know that James J. was born on March 19, 1860 and that he lived in Pike County Alabama.

I have also found an infant James J., son of Hamilton A. and Martha Lawrence in the 1860 census of Pike County.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if birth records are available for Pike County in 1860? I would really like to know if the infant James J. that appears in the census is the same person as my great-great grandfather and a record with his birthdate and parents would provide a valuable link to the next generation back.

Would someone have access to land records for the period 1850 to 1860. I am trying to trace his family and though the land records might state where he came from to Pike County.
Hello,

My great aunt recently passed away and I am searching for her family tree genealogy. I don't have a death date but I am estimating her birth to be about 1930. Her name was Curtis Aileen Qualls Langley and I am searching for her parents and brothers and sisters and possibly her children as I would like to connect with cousins I have never meet before. Curt recently passed away on Dec. 20, 2007. Curt lived in Oxford, Alabama and was married to George Langley. Her parents are Will Qualls and Bertha Hogue. Any help is greatly appreciated with this tree because this family is my brick wall trying to find my grandmother's family.

Pike/Bullock County Probate Slave records

I have been researching Afro American slave history in Pike/Bullock county for over 10 years and I have finally created information that will truly be of value to many of you that have an interest in this subject.

Because it is so very difficult trying to determine your family ties/heritage through slave records, I have purchased in the past the abstracts from General Estates Books 1-19 from the Historical and Genealogical Society.

In those books, they provide the names of everyone who have a will or probate record during those years. I have created a document that outlines everyone from those books that had references to slaves/their names/ the amount purchased and by whom.

I will/have made it a personal task of trying to obtain any/all probate related records especially as they are related to slave heritage. At this time, I have completed the estate records for Pike County (which of course holds the information for Bullock county) and I will be happy to transcribe or host any information for others who would like to contribute to this repository of information.

You can view/obtain this document from the website I have created. Just Copy the URL in your browser identified below.

I'm sure the document will provide a great deal of information for many of you as it has for me.

You can also view the website I've created below.

http://detajenterprise.com/genealogy/index.htm

Seeking info about a man who was hit with a heavy object or maybe even a "cornstalk" across the neck by Martin Browder. Martin thought he killed the man, so he fled the county, state. Supposedly, the man showed up in Milton, Florida some years later where Browder was. Browder left Florida in 1874.

MBrowder53190@aol.com

Pike County Courthouse Records

Does anyone know what, if any, records are available at the courthouse for the 1820-1830 time period? I will make a trip there to try to find who the husband was of my Rhoda Mathis (Mathews), if there might be anything that would help. She shows up on the 1830 census as a widow with two small boys and subsequent census images have conflicting data on where she was born, her age, etc. She and her son and his family moved from Pike in 1850 to Attala County, MS.
Her son was Wiley Mathis (Matthews, Mathews?) His wife was Sarah (Sary) Myers.

Thank you all for all your help on this board.

Clare

Trying to find a DNA donor for the CARROLL/CARRELL surname

James CARRELL and his wife Rhoda STEVENS (or STEVENSON) were married January 30, 1792 in Johnston County, NC. Some researchers have additional children besides these four mentioned in his Rev. War record: Margaret, John, James, and David.

After James's death May 16, 1834, Rhoda moved to Dale County, AL along with her son James. David already lived there, and John was in nearby Pike County, AL.

I am interested in contacting a male descendant of this family with the CARRELL surname (or any spelling of CARROLL) in a lineage with no adoption or "non-paternal event". An offer has been made to pay for a DNA test from this lineage to be compared with those men from Sampson County, NC. To be eligible the donor must be able to show a direct lineage with at least some documentation or at least show the source of the information. If the only source is copied from another genealogy on the internet, then it will be considered, but may not be accepted.

Some of the men in the Sampson County, NC group believe there is a relationship between these families. Besides the close proximity of Johnston and Sampson Counties, there are some names in common. One is the given name of Major and another is Noah.

If interested in being this DNA donor, please write directly to me at luraj@triad.rr.com. Don't hesitate because you don't understand the process of testing, you don't want to be contacted later, you don't use a computer well, or you are concerned about your privacy. If necessary I or someone else can serve as the contact person for you.

You can see those Carrolls already tested in the CARROLL project at
http://www.familytreedna.com/(c1unxwvjnrr3oebovhuard3e)/publ...
and at
http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydna.html
Click "Carroll Family DNA Values". The men shown in Orange are the ones we think are descended from one of the ten households of Carrolls in Sampson County at the time of the 1790 census.

Thank you,
Lura CARROLL Southard
List Administrator,
CARROLL-DNA@rootsweb.com
