Hi all,

I'm looking for information on Capt. David Tucker "Tuck" Smith (1824 - 1909). I believe he was a Confederate, but I've been unable to find very much information about him. Evidently he was well-known for being a viligiante in the final years of the Civil War.

I recently found an article that my great-grandfather, Carroll Ward Anderson, wrote applauding Capt. Tuck Smith's activities during the War. Carroll made it sound like Tuck saved northwest Arkansas from a lot of bad things, by staying around here and running bushwhackers off. This article that Carroll wrote was published in The Fayetteville Democrat on 17 March 1910 and was titled "A Tribute to Capt. Tuck Smith". Tuck died 24 November 1909 between Tuttle and Goshen. He is buried in the Tuck Smith Cemetery there.

I'd appreciate anything that you have seen or read about Tuck Smith. This newspaper article has made me curious about why my Great-grandfather Anderson supported him so much.

Joy (Anderson) Russell

I have some records of the Greenhaws in the deep south.and some records of some who served in the Civil War.

I believe they use to have a family reunion each year in that area of Arkansas. Thank you so much for your kind attention. Cleo Greenhaw. Cleo@fullnet.net

Hi, there!

I am disappointed to learn that the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) site does not have a single lookup volunteer in Newton County, Arkansas. The Newton County, AR GenWeb site doesn't have any listed, either. Is there anyone on this board who is willing to perferm obituary searches for me? I am looking for four, all of which would have appeared in whichever paper(s) cover the COMPTON area:

THRALL, Rufus S. died 11 Jan 1920

THRALL, Roy Enlow died 23 Nov 1961

THRALL, Edna (Welch) died 10 Dec 1970

SISCO, Efton Mack (most commonly known as Mack) died 14 Dec 1977.

I am willing to pay for copy fees, postage, parking, etc. However, I do not require hard copies of the obits... scanned or transcribed copies are fine. I will, however, require the name of the newspaper AND the publish date for each obit.

If anyone is willing to help, you may contact me directly by clicking on my user name above. Thanks!

Hello, Here is a bit of interesting information for Standridge's and all other descendants of Martha Pinetree and Henry Cagle. Some fammily stories passed down through the years state that Martha was full blood Cherokee.
Well, after having a DNA test, my MtDNA (through my mothers line) proves that Martha was not full blood Chreokee. Her haplotype is *J*. This is not a native American haplotype.
I would love to hear from other Standridge and Cagle descendants that have had a DNA test.
Best Regards, Steve Ingle
englewolf@netscape.com
My mother's name was Betty Susan Cox and was born on June 25, 1916 in Arkansas. Married my father in approx. 1933 and my Mother died at the age of 40 in Harris, co, Houston, Texas in 1957. She had a sister named Wyonna Cox Jones who is now deceased. I am trying to locate my grandparents and have almost reached a dead end. My Mother also had a brother named Orville and one name Ivey Cox.. whereabouts unknown. Any help would be appreciated... Thank you

I found her on the 1850 Census as being 10 years old in Newton County, Arkansas and then I found a Paulina C Self (age 16) living with the same family in Erath County, Texas in 1860. I am supposing this is the same person. Can someone tell me what happened to her from Erath County, Texas. I found the rest of the Self's in the area until death.

Hello, my name is Ben Easterling and I am trying to locate my grandmother's brother, Harold Jacobs, aka Jake Jacobs. If he is still living, Jake would be in his early to mid 90's. He and my grandmother wrote to each other for many years, but she lost contact with him several years ago. Our family has no clue his whereabouts. Jake hopped on board a train when he was a teenager and left rural Wolfe County KY. He became a deep sea diver and eventually took the position of chief diver at Marineland of the Pacific in California. His last mailing address was a PO Box in Jasper Arkansas. If anyone has any information about him, please email me at JDMDEC81943@aol.com or leave a message at this thread. Thank you very much...

I am looking for information on Samuel Edgmon or Edgemon who was born in Boxely Valley, Newton County, Ark. on February 4, 1842 and was killed in the civil war on February 6, 1863. He married Martha Penn around 3-4 years earlier. Martha gave birth to my grandfather George Washington "Doc" Edgmon in 1860. After Samuel's death in 1863 Martha moved to Jasper and probably remarried. Would like to know more about Martha also.

"Doc" married P.O. "Oli Vann" Moss, daughter of James Landers Moss and Darcus Jane Farmer, probably in Mossville, Newton Co. Ark. around 1880. They moved to Sequoyah Co., Oklahoma after 1900. I would like to know of any information on Oli Vann.

I am hoping that someone can help me in locating the grave of Tolliver Pitman DAVIS (1849 to 1870-1880) his last known residence was Pleasant Hill, Newton County, Arkansas. His wife, Nancy Ann BLACKWOOD BELL DAVIS (1839 to 1910-1920) was last living in 1910 at the home of her daughter Martha Ann BELL DAVIS and her husband Henderson Lafferty DAVIS in Pleasant Hill, Newton County, Arkansas. Since I am not from the area, I am not too sure which cemeteries they may be buried in, but guessing Deer, or Cowell, or others in the vicinity. I appreciate any help! Carri

All I know is she married Charley Lawson (son of Ruben and Elizabeth (Billistein Campbell) Lawson on April 12, 1888 in Newton County (have copy of marriage license). Family hearsay says her father's name was John Hudson. A T.S. Hudson (Thomas Seborn?? an older brother???) was surety for the marriage. Martha died from either suicide or murder in May 1900. Charley is in the Boone County Jail during the census in June 1900 (possibly for murder). Are there any newspaper records for this time period. Please help!

Burial place of Seala Roco/Rocole Foy?

Lloyd Foy is a brother of Ora & Eska Foy (who I asked for help with in an earlier post). He also lived in Newton County for a while. Following is the only census that shows Lloyd living in Arkansas and the only census that shows Lloyd's first wife AND their two children:

1900 Federal Census
Dist# 91, Pleasant Hill, Newton Co., Ark.
June 7, 1900
Sheet# 6 B
Family# 100

Foy, Loyd
Head
28 yrs.
b. Mar. 1872
Married for 9 yrs.
b. Mo.
f.b. Pa.
m.b. Pa.
Farmer

Seala
Wife
29 yrs.
b. July 1871
Married for 9 yrs.
Had 3 children- Has 2 living children
b. Mo.
f.b. ?
m.b. ?

Percy N.
Son
5 yrs.
b. June 1895
b. Ark.

Ellis R.
Son
2 yrs.
b. Aug. 1894
b. Ark.

I believe that I have found the eventual whereabouts of Percy & Ellis but I cannot find whatever happened to Seala, their mother! I suppose it's possible that they might have divorced but more likely that she died.

Sometime between 1900 and 1910 Lloyd moved back to Ohio, Morris Co., Ks. On the 1910 census I see that he is married to 'Grace' and they have children of their own. I am assuming that Seala (last name 'Roco' or 'Rocole' or something similar) might have died in Arkansas sometime between 1900 and 1910. It is unlikely that she would have a headstone but I'm sure hoping that she might be listed as being buried in one of the cemeteries in Newton County. Possibly in or near Pleasant Hill?

If there is anyone who can possibly check the Newton County cemetery books for her then I would be very greatly appreciative!!

Thank you all,
Karla
White/Nickols

I have been sitting at a brick wall for about 5 years now. We were always told growing up that my g-grandmother was born in Carroll County, but after receiving the Civil War Pension application for my g-g-grandmother on her second husband, we believe that maybe they (she and her first husband) did live in Carroll County (in Dry Fork, is what we always heard), but the county seat in Newton may have been where they went to do business, as the road may have been an easier one to travel.

My g-g-grandfather's name was James Nickols, and my g-g-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth White b. 1863; d. 1937. On the Pension application she lists Newton County as the place she and James Nickols were married, and also where he died in 1893. Census records from later on show that James Nickols may have been born in TN, as in some census records his children list TN as their father's birthplace.

We have never found any documentation to prove either claim. We know nothing about him, except that they were married in 1883 and had three children: Soula Almeda (my g-grandmother) b. 1883, Amos Burton (called Ples) b. 1887, and Cordia LeRoy b. 1890. The boys were relatively fair and barrel-chested men, but Soula was medium-sized and looked full-blooded Indian (so did her mother, Mary E.). We think James Nickols may have been a soldier either when he and Mary E. were married or just before. We also believe he may have worked on the railroad.
Are there any marriage records that exist for 1882-1884 (just to cover my bases)? And did Newton County keep death records that far back at all?
I know I'm grasping at straws here, but I'm really out of ideas. Oh, one thing I failed to mention was that my distant cousin, Robert Nickols, did a DNA test to try and help us in our search; we don't match any Nickols at all, but we match several Scott families. So, either James Nickols was really a Scott who changed his name, or was born out of wedlock..?
Any information you could provide, even a point in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Rebecca McAlary
Beckalary@comcast.net
Nathaniel & Alice are my greatgrandparents. But, I'm having a hard time finding out any information regarding them. I believe they started out in Newton County, AR, then moved to Oklahoma. They had a daughter named Harriet Emeline (Flud) Borders, she was my grandmother.
I'm more than willing to share what little info I have.
Thanks,
Andrea

Nathaniel SMITH & Mary PEARCE/PIERCE m. 1881 Newton Co., Ark.

I am looking for any relations to this couple. I have been searching for a Mary Pierce, b. c. 1860s AR, daughter of Morgan Pierce & Martha Jane Hines. All I knew was that she married a SMITH in Arkansas and stayed in Arkansas. Morgan moved back to Lincoln Co., MO by 1870. There is a Nathaniel SMITH and Mary PEARCE married Apr. 7, 1881 in Newton Co., Ark. I believe that this may be the Mary I'm looking for. Morgan's youngest daughter, Lydia Francis PIERCE FLANAGAN married Jesse Hamilton in Newton County in 1889, so I knew there had to be a connection to this county. Any help is appreciated. I noticed there is a Nathaniel Smith age 8, adopted, listed with the Mark SMITH family in 1900, is this a son of Nathaniel & Mary? Thank you.
