In a newpaper account of a family member who died near Ione in Amador County when she was thrown from a carriage in 1893, it says her husband received the message at Wiley's Station where he was trying to get some cattle moved out of the mountains. He came back the next day so it must be a ways from Ione to Wiley's Station. Can anyone tell me where Wiley's Station was located? Thank you.

Does anyone have information on Sam Stowers? I am also especially interested in info concerning Jim {James} Whaley.
Jim/James married my greatgrandmother Mary Elizabeth Stowers of Amador county. Stowers were in Fiddletown in 1850 and the Amador archives state Jim Whaley, husband of Mary was located in Ione in the late 1800's. There were two Stowers families and I understand that somewhere in Amador county?, a Stowers married a Stowers. Evans and Bradigan families were also either related or friends of Stowers. But I have yet to figure how Jim Whaley came to be, he died in the first quarter of the 1900's, and thus far I come to a dead end in researching especially him...................Can anyone help me???? Sure would appreciate it, thank you.

Irene Terrill
irene@btswirelessweb.com

[maiden name Irene Ruggiero, mother Helen Stein, her mother Hazel Whaley, her mother Mary Elizabeth Stowers, her mother Narcissis Stowers, her mother [possibly] Louisa Arrowsmith}

Milton Oliver McClellan

Has anyone ever run across any record of this man? He was my g-grandmother's kid brother and is our official family Mystery Man. Plymouth, CA was his last known address.

MILTON OLIVER MCCLELLAN

B: 5 March 1881 in KS.
Marr: Dec 1913 to MARTHA SARAH POLLMAN
D: ?

Milton and Martha met in Tenino, WA where she worked in the boarding house that her mother ran. MIlton lived there and worked in coal mines near Tenino, first as a miner and later as an engineer. His father's older brother and his family lived in Tenino, so he had family there. His own father, William Henry McClellan, lived in Oregon City and Hood River, OR with Milton's married sisters. Milton, his father and four sisters had all migrated to OR from KS between 1885 and 1890. Milton's older brother William J. probably died back in KS. His mother Martha Jane Curtis McClellan died there five days after Milton's birth in March 1881.

I'm really hoping to learn what ever became of Milton. He abandoned his young wife Martha and their infant son some time in 1914 or 1915 in the copper mining town of Kennett, CA. That site was drowned decades later under the waters of Shasta Reservoir.

WW I Draft Registration Card: Milton's name appears one last time on his draft reg card. At the time he filled it out he was living in Plymouth, Amador Co, CA. There he worked for the Plymouth Gold Mining Ltd. company at one of the most productive gold mines in the west. Milton filled out his draft reg card in Sept 1918, sixty days before the Armistice was signed. It is unknown whether or not he was actually drafted - as a miner he probably was exempted for working in a "vital industry". However, he was till in his thirties and therefore well under the age 46 draft limit of that time.

Milton provided his father's address in Oregon City, OR as his contact person on his draft reg card. There is no evidence his relatives, either in OR or in WA, ever knew where he was after he left Martha and their son. In his father's obituary it was presumed he had been lost in the conflict of WW I.

I've spent a few days in Plymouth and nearby Jackson, Amador Co, CA doing research in hopes of finding some record of Milton. His name does not appear in any lists of miners who died in accidents, nor in any burial records for county cemeteries. Although he played the French horn in the Tenino city band, I could not find his name connected with any town bands or baseball teams (they were usually the same guys) in newspaper archives at the Jackson library. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Any information on this line of the Dal Porto family would be greatly appreciated. Augustino was born in Italy according to the census.

Hello Amador County Researches,

I just returned from a week-long visit to Jackson, CA (Amador County seat) researching my Amadorian ancestors. The Amador County Archives is an amazing place in terms of its collection! If you have an opportunity to visit, DO IT!

I brought home several pages of documents which contain various family names beginning with the letter "G" and, in a few instances "F" and "H" and would be happy to do "look-ups" for those of you who may be searching for info.

Specifically, I have 1892 voter registrations for the Jackson area "Finn" to "Hayden"; "Gartlin" to Ginter";

1894 voter registrations for "Gallagher" to "Graham" and "Gooding" to "Granville"

1868 Poll List -- Jackson Precinct "Frei" to "Holtz"

1874 Birth Register - McCoy, Quin, and Going

1875 or 1876 (difficult to read) Birth Register - Samuels, Gairo, Davis, Wall, Salubi, Nattan, Gairo

1914 School Register for the Kennedy Flat School listing names of all students attending that year, with ages.

D.
Trying to document the original immigrants of the GIUSTO/GUISTO and CAMINETTI families in the 1840s and 1850s and to establish their origins. Biagio Caminetti (my line) and his brothers Rocco or Foche Caminetti, Natale Caminetti, and (maybe)Antonio Caminetti settled in Amador in the 1850s. Rocco had married Maria B. "Tina" Giusto/Guisto in Boston in 1851. Her sister Clara Giusto m. Biagio Caminetti (2 children). Clara remarried to Santi CAMPI (4 children). Also looking for links to (possibly brothers) John Giusto/Guisto and Ambrosio "Bruce" Giusto of Amador, Francis Giusto of SF, and Frank Giusto/Guisto of Sacramento.

Dr. William E. FIFIELD, County Coroner, proprietor of American Exchange Hotel moved to Tacoma, Washington

I have searched the marvelous Amador Archives and found numerous references to Dr. William E. Fifield. I am trying to determine if his daughter Annie L. born 2 Jan 1867 was born in Amador Co., CA. By the 1870 census he has moved to Douglas Twp, San Joaquin Co., CA (in fact when he dies in Tacoma, Pierce Co, Washington, his body is shipped to San Joaquin Co and buried in Linden Cemetery there) where he and his wife C.A. age 28 born PA (approx 1842) are living with their daughter Annie whose age is given as 5 and born in Iowa--which is all wrong as she never states a place of birth other than CA.
In 1860 Dr. Wm E, Fifield is in Twp 4, Amador Co and his sister Lucretia L. is living with him, so he probably also marries "C.A. --" in Amador County. Looking for their marriage record as we have no idea what her surname was or who her parents are (although surname may be LAUER)
By 1880, Dr. Fifield has moved to East Cottonwood, Yolo Co., CA and wed Ella Jane ROYCE (dau of Ogden H. Royce) and in March of 1880 they have Mary Ella, their only child. Mary Ella weds in Tacoma, Washington probably) to Harold Raise TRACY (son of Edwin D. Tracy and Mary A.G. --surname not known) They have a son William Edwin born about 1910-11 and a daughter Margaret E. born about 1916 for which we also have no additional information.
We cannot find Annie L. Fifield on the 1880 census but on Dec 25, 1881 in Sacramento Co., she weds Charles H. ODELL, son of Milan M. ODELL and Ann LOMER.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Griffin family in Jackson area,(1885-1906) early Methodist Churches in Jackson/Ione area

We found out my great-grandmother is buried in Ione Cemetary, surname Griffin, died in 1905 or 1906). She is buried in the Burley plot? Her name was Minnie (Mary?) Daly Mc Vey (1st husband) Griffin. She was born in Ca, in about 1875. Does anyone have any information on the Griffin family in the Jackson area? Nathaniel Griffin (b. Ireland) and his son Benjamin Griffin (b. Canada) (husband of Minnie Griffin in Ione Cemetary) owned a ranch there in 1890 to 1905-6. Also, Nathaniel's daughter, Sarah married a Methodist minister who had preached in the area Rev. Robert ???? Nathaniel had two brothers, Henry (dies in S.J.) and James Griffin. The three brothers were born in Ireland, went to Canada and were in Nevada City, Ca. in 1880. Does anyone know anything more about these three brothers?
Thanks.

Louis H. Miller death in 1898

Louis H. Miller died about 4/21/1898 in Amador Co. The clipping I found in a Calaveras Co. paper stated he died accidently when a log he was blasting hit him in the head fracturing his skull. He was accidentally buried in the paupers cemetery since no relatives were found but his brother, John Miller, went from Angels Camp and exhumed him and reburied him in "the Protestant Cemetery". We can find no burial records for L.H Miller in Calaveras Co. so are thinking he was reburied in an Amador Co. cemetery instead of in Altaville. Does anyone have access to old newspapers that might be able to get a copy of the death report? Are there lists of who is buried in the Amador Co. cemeteries?

Hi Karen,

James Joseph Herche was my Dad and Caroline Morris Wall Herche was my grandmother.

Have all of the same info you do and haven't been able to trace William any further than NY.
He is buried in/near Jackson. Died 189O in Dry Creek on the "ranch"

When the ranch was sold you gggf listed Monterey, CA as his home. I was there this summer and couldn't find him anywhere.

His older brother John had numerous kids and grandkids are now all over CA. I saw John (from Oceanside) this summer and have sent him your info. I also hear from Pat Kelly Warren who lives in Ione.

I know more about the Kelly side than my own. I had no idea I had "cousins" until I started doing genealogy in 1998-1999. My Dad never said anything

I think the Catherine Morris (orphan) was the little sister of Michael Morris. After Michael's death in winter of 1861/62 she was a young woman with 4 small children and a share of a mine. She married William Kelly and took money into that marriage, possibly from the mine. Michael had sold a share of his mine to brother/cousin Matt Morris for $500 in 1856

1870 census...the Morris children are on the next page.
1880 they are in the Kelly home

I have no idea when Margaret (Madge ) Morris married Jesse Brown and am only guessing at 1888. As far as Maria (MInnie) to Frank Ward...??????

I can't even find the marriage date of William Herche to Caroline Morris Wall.

Sue

I believe they also adopted a child named Catherine who was born in Ireland. One was born in Utah

Catherine and William had 4-5 more children:

Sara
John Edward
William (my gggrandfather)
Catherine A

TAYLOR of Jackson Was Superintendent of Old Eureka in Bonanza Days JACKSON (Amador Co.), Dec. 21 - In the death of Benjamin F. TAYLOR the mother lode has lost one of its pioneer mining men who took an active part in the development of properties. Mr. TAYLOR died yesterday afternoon after a short illness due to the infirmities of advanced years at the age of 75 years. Mr. TAYLOR was born in Ohio and came to Amador county sixty years ago. He had charge of the famous Old Eureka mine during its bonanza days, was superintendent of the Zella mine thirty-three years and was one of the original promoters of the Argonaut mine, one of the richest on the mother lode. He is said to have handled $35,000,000 in gold. He never held public office other than trustee for the Jackson high school. Aside from mining he made a part of his wealth in investments and was one of the directors of the Bank of Amador county. His fortune is estimated at a quarter of a million. He leaves four children, Frank TAYLOR of Stockton, Ernest TAYLOR of New York, Walter TAYLOR of Jackson and Mrs. Elizabeth COX of San Francisco. He was 75 years of age and a native of Ohio. The funeral will take place Saturday under the auspices of the Odd Fellows." Source: The Sacramento Union, 22 Dec 1917, Page 5. Transcribed by Betty Loose.

Hunting for information regarding the family of my 2g. grandgather Edward Lee (Ned) ALLISON (b.1829 VA) & Mary Allen MOORE (b.1828, England). Sometime around 1853-55 they arrived in CA from MO, living on the James BERRY farm in Plymouth. Their first child James Albert was born in Plymouth on Nov. 1, 1855. They homesteaded the Allison Ranch at the end of Allison Lane (Old Oaker Rd) in Plymouth in 1871 and the family lived there until 1909 when they moved to Diamond Springs (Eldorado County) after John Augustus Allison's death.
Sheckels Family

Looking for info, whereabouts of the following Sheckels brothers (listed in the 1860 CA Census):

James Sheckels (b. 1835 VA), listed in Township 2 with Geo. H. Payne, 2 others, James' occupation listed as "gentleman."

John Sheckels (b. 1833 VA), listed in Township 2 with Hure family, 2 other individuals, and was a miner.

A third brother, Hezekiah (b. 1830 VA) was in Calaveras Co. in 1860 and was a miner.

All three were sons of Peter Sheckels (d. 1849 in MO) and Elizabeth Harris (1794-1870s). The family originally lived in Frederick Co., VA, and moved to MO in the 1830's, living in several counties in northern MO. All three disappeared from CA by 1870, but did not return to MO. There is family tradition that places one or more of them in Colorado, but no VA-born Sheckels were found in later censuses.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

They had one
daughter born in 1878.
Louisa and Richards sons settled in different Counties by
the 1900's. I would like to discover where Louisas' daughters
went and to whom they were married.

The Leonard children: William, Caleb, Alexander, Ellen and
Laura.
Stephen and Louisa Hyles' daughter: Ida Hyle

Could anyone tell me where (an address) in Amador Co. CA, I might be able to write for some informaton or records about a DAVID ROBINSON and his wife Mary (unknown) who lived in Amador Co. in 1860 through 1880. Are there any Archives in Amador Co. or perhaps a History Department? I found a David Robinson in Census 1860 - 1870 & 1880 that is listed as a Farmer and Miner but I need to find more about him to see if he could be a son to a David Robertson/Robinson of Muhlenberg Co. KY. Our "family story" says that son David born abt.1821 left for the gold fields of California abt. 1851 and the family never heard from him again. These are the Census records I've found:

1850
David Robinson Pittsburg, Johnson, AR abt 1821 Kentucky. [Our David Robertson/Robinson had a sister Margaret who married William Willis and this couple moved to Johnson Co. AR about 1840 & remained there all their lives and I think this Census Record could be Margaret's brother David.]

1860 Census
David Robinson Township 3, Amador, CA 39 (b. 1820) Kentucky Male

1870 Census
David Robinson Township 3, Amador, CA abt 1821 Kentucky White Male

1880 Census
David ROBINSON Mary ROBINSON Township 3, Amador, CA <1821> Kentucky Self
Mary ROBINSON David ROBINSON Township 3, Amador, CA <1820> Kentucky Wife

Anna Kreisman - 1963

Miss Anna Kreisman of Sutter Creek passed away Friday night at the Amador hospital, where she has been for the past two years. However, it was not until the last two months that Miss Anna was bedfast... Three generations of family can remember the kindnes of this proud, high principled woman... She was born in London, coming to America as a small child. In 1890 she was teaching at her first school, Rancheria, By horse and buggy she would journey from Rancheria to Sutter Creek to be with her mother on weekends ... In 1893 she taught at the Sutter Creek grammer school- a classroom of 60 children and a $50 a month warrant was not unusual for Anna. To take care of her ailing mother, she left teaching in 1910. she was noted for her perfect penmanship and her talent for writing is depicted in her article in Sargent's Amador County History on the first auto built by Louis Socal... After her mother's death she was assistant bookkeeper at the Wildman Mine and Central Eureka. In the 1920's she became librarian in Sutter Creek. Her friendly greetings and courtisies extended the public by this faithful servant are many- assisting students with research, essays, grammar- all a pleasure for this didicated woman. After a fall on Main Street in Febuary, 1957, she was unable to coninue as librarian... Services were conducted by a Sacramemto Rabbi on Tuesday morning with proper Jewish burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. Amador Dispatch Dec. 1963

My grt grandfather John Chinn owned the building with the attached Brothel. I have xeroxed interior photos of the stage but no real exterior one. Does anyone know if the building was remodeled and is still standing ? I would really like a photo.

Plus does anyone know if the house of John Chinn's is still standing ? My grandmother spoke of it and I even have a photo of the front porch with family sitting about.

Census has only "Jackson Precinct" or "Twp 1 Jackson"., on "Main Street". How would I find out ? Was the residence attached to the business ????
