I'm looking for death information on Stephen Platt. I believe he died in the town of Paradise, and was buried in the Veterans section Paradise cemetery. He was born abt 1844 in New York to Philo and Polly (maiden name unk) Platt. He married Mary H Olds in Wisconsin. She died there in 1883, and I believe he remarried to a girl named Julia. He was still in Wisconsin in 1900, so his death would have occurred after 1900. I appreciate any help!

Cana Pine Creek Cemetery

This cemetery is just North of Chico (10-15 miles) in Butte County, California. Many of the folks buried here are Pioneers during the Gold Rush era. I did a walk through and noted unusual names and family groups. I hope to completely transcribe this cemetery sometime this year. First I want to see if it has already been done! The original records were lost to fire, so the ledger starts at 1937. Thankfully it appears that most of the early graves were marked.

I went to the cemetery at Dayton this morning to do some lookups on a specific family. I wrote down the surnames that I saw in family groups. The larger groups are listed in the surnames. There are more that I wrote down if I saw more than four scattered in the cemetery. The less major surnames are:
HANSEN, FROST, MCANARLIN, GOSS, POWELL, MILLER, MANN, AND VANGUNDA/VANGUNDE.

is in the Oroville Cemetery? Her husband, Oscar Sinclair is said to have a stone, 1854-1925. They had three children who died in Oroville, and I suspect they've buried the same cemetery as Oscar.

Constant DUHEM and Victor DUHEM

It is established that Constant DUHEM, and brother Victor DUHEM, served the Union in the Civil War as enlistees in the California Volunteer Infantry, and were mustered out in November 1864, and January 1865 (respectively) in the southern New Mexico area. It is also known that these two brothers opened a photography studio in Denver, Colorado in 1869.

Can anyone tell me of their whereabouts and activities between the end if their military service and the opening of the Denver studio? This is a photo-history project, in which I am trying to establish the times and locations of any photographic work done by the Duhem brothers prior to the opening of the Denver studio.

I found a 1880 census in Butte County, CA and it lists a Oregon Township. I have been looking all over the internet for Butte County and any information about the Oregon Township. Does anybody know anything about the Oregon Township in 1880? I think I found my grandmothers side of the family on the Oregon Township census for Butte County. But I can't find any other information on the Oregon Township and my family.
My Great Grandparents came over from Portugal or The Azores I think approx. 1874 or 1875 into MASS. according to this 1880 census then traveled to Oregon Township in Butte County. On the 1880 census it lists the following that I think is my family that I am looking for any information on. When Portuguese people came over from there country they tended to shorten there name and use the last name as the 1st name and the 1st name as the last name to make it easier to conform to living in the U.S. So my family might have changed there original name to the name that is listed on the 1880 census.

My grandmother had 11 children.
Theodore (Ted), Glen, Bradford (he used the name Ray), and my father Gus Foster Rowe. The daughters names are Mabel, Eva, Violet, Evelyn, Edith, Dorothy & Helen.

Hi,
I have a pictue postcard of a man posing on some rough looking tree limbs, taken in Portland, OR addressed to Mrs W.F. Thompson, Gridley, Butte Co., CA in 1911. It was in a old photo album I bought with some other NorCal early settlers. I can't tell if the Thompson's are related to the other people in the album or not. Anyway, I see there is a huge family of Thompson's in Butte but I can't find a W.F. He signed it Frank and so am guessing that he must be William Franklin Thompson. I think he sent the card to his wife because he addresses her as Babe. He goes on to talk about when he arrived what he has done so far and when he is leaving that night. I first thought that he must be Frank Ball because there are photos of the Flanley's that Frank Ball married into in the album. Then I received a photo of Frank Ball and don't think it is the same man as the one in the postcard.
I will post the photo and hopefully someone can help identify him. There are other photos of this same man as a young boy taken in Chico.

I am looking for information about George Bright Pearce and Olivia Ann (Aikin)Pearce and their children who moved from eastern Iowa to Butte Co. CA (probably Paradise) in late 1800s. The nine children (born 1848-1866) were Mary Louisa, Lura), Ellen, Lura (m. Thomas McNees), Frances, Henry, Arthur, Cyrus, Jesse (m. Thomas Jenkins), George Jr. (m. Mary Jan Howard). The Pearces are cousins on my mother's side of the family.

I am curious about why they moved there from Iowa. I attended college in Chico in the late 1960s, but was unaware that they had been there first!

I would be happy to share whatever information I have.

We have turned up several photos of people that we don't know: Leslie Freeman, Ethel Fletcher, Bill Mathews, William Page Frambes, Jim and Ethel Marshall, Silvester Counts, C. F. Shamberger. I am searching for the family of three soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Butte County, California as their home of record.

Soldier: GENE AUSTIN SANDERS
Born: 1930
Date of loss: July 20, 1950

Soldier: CLIFFORD HAROLD SMITH
Born: 1931
Date of loss: July 16, 1950 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 212 families from California that have not been located. There are three families from Butte County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Oroville and Myers

I'd like to resurrect a query I raised in this forum several years ago. Several local historians have very kindly provided help in the past and I am indebted to them; but I'm still struggling.

I have been trying to establish what my gt-grandfather, HENRY MYERS, was doing in Oroville/Ophir City, Butte County, as a young man in the years 1852 (approx.) to Oct/Nov 1859 when he returned to England for reasons which are unknown. All I have is documentary evidence, dated October 15th 1859, confirming his position as a leading member of Oroville's Jewish community and regretting his decision to return to Europe. The suggestion is always that he was a merchant of some sort.

Henry's associates seem to have included W. Mendelson (?) and A.D. Reis (?) (about neither of whom I know anything) and Max Brooks (whose later successful life as businessman and State politician appears better documented; he was however less fortunate in his personal life - no less than four of his young children lie in the Oroville Jewish Cemetery).

I am also trying to establish whether there was any family link with BENJAMIN MYERS who is described as a founder of the town of Oroville and judge and who had a store in what is now known as Myers Street. It is stated in one publication that the street was named after him. Benjamin has proved to be as elusive as Henry. This is surprising as it sounds as though he was a very prominent member of the local community at one stage. Perhaps he departed early because like my gt-grandfather he seems to have left little trace.

If anyone has any further information on Benjamin (or better still, but less likely, on Henry) I should be very grateful to hear from them.

I am searching for information on my great grandmother's two husbands. I have no info on dates of their births or marriages. Her name was Susan Busard, born in Lee County, Iowa. She met a man named Hiley or Hiley Walker at the hotel where they both worked and they eloped to California sometime around the late 1890's. Later she married a man named Kelsey Nichols. In 1928, she returned as a widow to Lee County, Iowa to live with her sister. All we know is the husband's names and that one of them was supposed to be half Sioux Indian, not sure which. She had a daughter Margie that died in her late teens, but we don't know by which husband. I found a Kelsey G. Nichols on the 1880 Butte Co. census, aged 15, at Chico, in the household of W.P. Nichols and his wife Elizabeth, who was apparently the 2nd wife, as there are two step children by the name of Brayles in the household. Does anybody recognize any of these names? We've been searching for a long time for this information. Her obit stated she lived in Calilfornia, Washington & Oregon, but no exact localities.

I am looking for a cemetery listing for Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Williams born about 1857. He died below or in Paradise in 1888, survived by two small children; Minnie, May and wife, Sallie. I expected him to be in Clear Creek Cemetery where his father, uncle Francis Marion and brother John Thomas were buried from 1892 to 1937.

Sallie, his widow, married a J. Roberts by 1889, according to probate. I looked in the close-by places of burial (Clear Creek, Old Oroville and Cherokee), so maybe someone can look up Andrew in their listings?

Don't know much about J. Roberts and the girls, either. Any help would be appreciated.

Andrew was the son of James Madison and Lucinda (Hudspeth) Williams in San Joaquin County, CA. They originally settled near Dry Creek House on the old Forkner place in 1869 and afterwards in Berry Canyon (Stoneman District) below Paradise and West of the Clear Creek Post Office.

Williams Road, near Butte College is named after the family.

Looking for any information that I can find on Frederick and Martha Horn. Last known residence Pence(Pentz), Butte County, CA in 1880. 5 known children are: Ida (b 1860), Harry (b 1865), Hettie (b 1868), Walter (b 1873) and Marie Ethel (b 19 Jan 1880). Frederick was born in Germany. Martha in Pennsylvania (her father English and mother Irish). The first three children were born in Iowa. The last two in California. Marie Ethel was Born in Pence(Pentz), Butte County, CA. She was my great-grandmother. I have hit wall after wall trying to research this family.
The only information I have is on my great-grandmother who moved to Alaska during the gold rush and married my great-grandfather, William Nicholas Marx, who was later murdered and stayed for several years raising her 2 children.
Her brother Harry married at some point, either before or after he moved to San Francisco and had at least 1 child. To the best of my knowledge, he was a lawyer. Somewhere, I have a copy of his will that mentions a couple of girls and I don't know if they were children or grandchildren.
If anyone can help me fill in some blanks, I would greatly appreciate it.

My family is Portuguese so there is a possibility they are using the last name spelled FRANCK, FRANCISCO, FRANCISCA, FRANCA, MARTIN OR HENRIQUES. Or the last name spelling starting with FRA. HENRIQUES is the maiden name of the mother Mary. I was told that Portuguese people usually didn't use there birth names when they came to the U.S., that is why I have given a few differant spellings. The mother & fathers names are Martin & Mary both born in Portugal or The Azores.

I learned today from the Lingenfelter Archives that my ggrandfather Albert Foster and ggrandmother Calle James Foster are buried in the Vina Cemetery along with son Henry Clay Foster (g-uncle). My Grandfather, John FRANCIS, married Mary Ann ANK in 1878. Her parents were Jacob and Lucy (Mansfield)ANK. The oldest daughter of John and Mary A. Francis was Margaret Francis, my grandmother. She wed a MERRITHEW.

John died in 1886 in Mooretown, Butte County and is buried near there (Feather Falls?). He had an older brother, David Francis.

When someone is free for lookups, I am hoping you can check local newspapers (which ones?) for this event, mentioned in Jane Shaw's obit: Jane Shaw (nee Samantha Jane Masters) thrown from a horse on election day, 1860. The accident crippled her for life. Jane was living with her daughter Eliza(beth) J. Smith in Stringtown/Mooretown area of Butte County for most of her life and is on the 1860 census in this area. I'm not sure the accident happened in Stringtown, however.
