I am hoping to find an obituary for Guy Harrison Gale, born 24 Sep 1929 in New York, who died 2 Apr 1988 in Contra Costa County. His parents were Guy H. Gale b 1893 and ______ Hutchison, daughter of Myrnie McVey and Mr. Hutchison.

He shares a great great grandfather, Samuel Pancake with us through Samuel's daughter Ophelia who married William McVey. I would like to share information with descendants of this family.

Jones - Stephen & sons John and Thomas in Lafayette - also Madden

Stephen Jones (1795-1863) was married to Mariah Madden. She died bef 1840 in Illinois; and in 1853 Stephen traveled to Lafayette with his son John W. Jones to meet up with John W's brother, Thomas Jones, who was already there. Stephen, and several of the family are buried in Lafayette Cem (as indicated below). If you are researching this family, or if you are a descendant, I would love to trade info with you, and more importantly, meet you. I descend from another of Stephen's sons, Mabra Jones, who had traved to South Texas and settled in Victoria Co, about 1845.

Also, if anyone is local to this cemetery and would be willing to snap a few digital pictures, I would very much greatly appreciate some pictures of these headstones - particularly Stephen Jones as he is my 3rd g-grandfather.

Two Madden cousins were also with the Joneses in Lafayette -- Mabra Madden (b 1829 m Maggie Shafer) and Richard Madden (b 1838, m Emma Southard), sons of two of Mariah Madden Jones' brothers. The Lafayette Cemetery has listed three Madden graves, one being William T Madden, an 8-month old son of Richard and Emma. The other two I do not know who they are, Jerry Madden (d 6 Apr 1948) and Johannah Madden (d 15 Dec 1933).

David Newell was born 1850 in England. He moved to the USA in 1895. He died in Richmond, CA., on 4Oct 1941. He was the father of Mrs. Helen Mitchell of Richmond,CA. He was 92 years old. If you need a user name and password...the name is "vitalguest" and the password is "enjoy". As usual, the entry is a little hard to read but it did happen in Contra Costa County. Once you have the date of death, you can go onto the Contra Costa County Library website and request a newspaper obituary. The service is free. There are several very good genealogy societies in Contra Costa County. Maybe you could request one of them to find any possible articles in the newspaper at that time since it was an accidental death.

David Newell was born 1849 in England. He was a Baptist minister. He lived awhile in Missouri. He then lived most of the remainder of his life in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. August Caviglia, 49, 30 Sherwood Court, Millbrae, died on Christmas Day at Peninsula Hospital after a long illness. He owned a liquor store in San Francisco.

A native son, he resided in Millbrae 20 years.

Survivors include his widow, Angelina; a son, David, of Burlingarne; three daughters, Jane DiPaola of Belmont; Linda Benson of San Bruno and Lori Caviglia of Millbrae; his mother, Palmira Caviglia of San Francisco, and four sisters. Winters family from OK to CA

I am searching for further info on a branch of my John William & Sarah Francis (Howard) Winters family of southwestern Oklahoma. Their son Thomas Cornelius Winters m.Maudie Belle Hokett in OK, has 12-13 children, of at least several whom went to CA during or after the Depression &/or WWII. Some were in Contra Costa Co. (mainly Brentwood, maybe Oakley). I am unable to obtain an obit on one, Lloyd Lowe Winters 1918-21 Dec 1999 Brentwood. Also, his brother, Thomas Claude Winters, 1925-24 Sep 1982 in the county. They had siblings in & around Stockton: Mrs. Maudie McKee 1922-2004 & Mrs. Sarah Wark 1921-bef.2004 (m.1986 James W. Wark 1919-2006--cannot locate obits).

Looking for James and/or Robert Abernethy, my cousins. Their father, James (Jimmy) Abernethy was my grandmother's brother. James Jr. and Robert would be in their 50's or 60's now.

I believe that after their mother died, one of them (maybe Robert) moved to Contra Costa County with their maternal aunt, Edith Hill. The boys' mother was Eleanor (Hill) Abernethy.

I am doing research into my family and so among them is the Bradshaw family, with that of James Wesley or Wesley Bradshaw born in Crockett, Contra Costa County, born around 1932? and who died in 1973. I believe he may have been a priest. Before he died he was at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, California. He was married to a Miller and they had children born between 1970 and 1973. The two of them married on June, 1970. The Miss Miller part was my cousin. Now I have never really met these people but they are part of my family tree and I would like to know more. The Scopione part and the Tacconi part is due to the fact that Marion Scopione and Ruth Tacconi, along with a John Bradshaw and a Helen Matta were siblings of Wesley Bradshaw. I am trying to find info re: Carol B. Nix, born in October, 1918 in Oklahoma to Lillian and Robert Nix. Carol grew up in Los Angeles and is found in the 1920 & 1930 Census there. I am wondering if Carol B. Warner, also b. Oct, 1918 could be the married name of Carol B. Nix, since the info is a close match.

If someone can find Carol B. Warner's Obit I would be grateful. The SSDI shows Carol Warner's date of death being 26 Nov 2001, last residence being Concord, Contra Costa, CA 94519.

Searching for info on Emril Mays- former resident of Richmond

My mothers great uncle was born in Keller, Tarrant Co., Texas June 14, 1891 to Calvin Pope Mays and Francis Victory Anderson Mays. Emril never married. According to a draft record that I found, Emril was living at 141 Washington Avenue, Richmond, Contra Costa, California in 1941. He was working at the Richmond Ship Yard No. 3 at the time. He listed my great grandpa as his next of kin on this draft card. I can't find record of him after that. My mother was told at the time he died he was living in Reno, Nevada and was working in a casino. At the time of his death in about 1958-59 his wallet and belongings were mailed to my grandparents. No one knows the date of his death or where he is buried. It was a long time ago but if anyone in the area has heard of him or any stories of him... please share with me. I hope to find his death record, be it in California or Nevada. Thanks.

I have an old photo of two ladies taken in June 1957 with writing on the back:

"Sarah Penner, 2765 13 st., San Pablo, Calif. Uncle John's daughter and Tena Dyck."

I believe "Uncle John's daughter" refers to Tena Dyck instead of Sarah Penner.

I have been trying to find John Dyck, who was born June 1871 in Russia and emigrated to Manitoba, Canada with his family on the SS Canadian No. 32, arriving in Quebec 19 Jul 1875.

John's parents were Klaas and Sara (Doell) Dueck and his sister, Maria, was my great grandmother who married Jacob Nickel.

I am looking for some information on Ruth Storm of Walnut Creek, California.

The story is kind of long but I'm going to abbreviate it...

This is the information that I know of her. She had a sister Linnea and a brother Everett. They were all born in Sweden. They left with their father (my great grandfather) Charles Erickson for the United States after their mother died. They eventually settled in Patton, Pennsylvania which is located in Cambria County (west central Pennsylvania).

Charles again married and had another three other children with his 2nd wife Sophia (my great grandmother). I understand that there was a pretty big aged different between the two sets of siblings. The youngest of the 2nd set was my grandfather William.

Ruth, Linnea and Everett eventually left Pennsylvania around 1918 and relocated to Chicago. From my understanding, Ruth eventually moved on to California married and had a child. She eventually settled in Walnut Creek. My grandmother use to correspond with Ruth, Linnea and Everett from time to time.

A few months ago, I had a conversation with my grandmother about Grand-pap's brother and sisters and she didn't have to much more to share.

I am hoping that one of the children or grandchildren of the above mentioned are also searching for some lost family members and would like to touch base.

Just to let you know that have relatives in Texas that would love to talk with you.

My gg grand father was Emmanuel S. Rodriguez(s), not sure if it was spelled with an s or a z. He came from Portugal, probably the Azores. His name changed to Manuel Rodgers, and eventually he went by MS Rodgers. He married Jane Kelly in San Francisco, and they moved to Antioch prior to 1910, probably after the SF earthquake. MS Rodgers owned a saloon in downtown Antioch. I have found his business license record, for retail liquor with a fee of $200. in 1911.

I am looking for the burial location of Manuel and Jane Rodgers. I believe them to be buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery out on East 18th Street. My grandmother once told me they were buried there. As you drive into the cemetery they would be on the left side in the far back.

Dr.L.B.Weatherbee (1880-1960) practiced in Antioch 40 years. I am seeking wives, extended family of any kind and someone or anyone with answers or leads to his extended family members.

"Isabelle", his wife, asserted he deserted her in 1913 and was granted a divorce in 1915 in the Oakland Tribune. They may have married in San Francisco. Any additional information would be additional information.

"Ethel", another wife per 1920 census. Her family tree indicates they were married in 1919, then divorced. She married next Pierre DuBois in 1925. Their son Melvin DuBois was born in 1927 and living with his Siple grandparents (Peter and Flora) in Santa Clara in 1930.

"Almeda", another third wife per 1930 census is listed as "Mada" on L.B.'s WWII draft registration.
Almeda died in 1966 after L.B. died in 1960. They are buried together. She appears to have been married to Herbert Young. They were in Kansas in 1988, in New Mexico in 1900, in Arizona in 1910.

His wives' children (and descendants) may offer information on L.B.:

Fay Bell Young, born ~1898 in Kansas was listed as Almeda's dgtr in 1900 & 1910 census. She died in Antioch in 1957, a widow of Police Chief Alfred LeRoy. Fay was a Wagoner in WW II and is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.

Thelma Weatherbee born ~1913 in Kansas was listed as L.B.'s adopted dgtr in 1930 Census. She appears in Oakland Tribune student news as early as 1925.

Mrs. Patricia Franklin of Santa Cruz is listed as Fay LeRoy's sister in 1957.

Dale and Paul Bougue of Walnut Creek and
Leon LeRoy of Antioch are listed sons of Fay in her obit.

These extended family members may hopefully be a link to information on Maine native Dr.L.B.Weatherbee of Antioch.

Does anybody know anything about the Contra Costa County Hospital (Detention Center)in Martinez, CA in the 1920 to 1930's? I found a person that is a good possibility she is my great grandmother in the 1930 census for Contra Costa County, City Of Martinez. It lists the people as inmates on page # 7 line # 32. I don't know if this is a mental hospital or homeless hospital. I found a Contra Costa Health Services in Martinez, CA in 2007 on the internet. It lists that there are services for mental, homeless people, etc. I can't find out if this is an extension from the Contra Costa County Hospital & Detention from 1930. I found on the 1930 Census a Mary Frank born in Portugal (Azores) and her mother and father were also born in Portugal (Azores). Her age is listed as 75 years old and widowed. Her birthdate would be in 1855. I have a few more questions if somebody responds to this message.
I ONLY HAVE 2 LEADS THAT I HAVE FROM MY GRANDMOTHERS SIDE OF THE FAMILY. I am looking for a death date and burial place for my great-grandfather's twin brother. His name was Erastus Willard Warren born 9 May 1840 in Canaan, Somerset County, Maine. The last census he is seen on is in 1910 in Township 5, District 219, Contra Costa County, California. His wife was named Sarah Emeline Williams but I find her in 1930 in Oakland.

The reason I am asking here is it is a good starting place as the last census he was on was in this county and it is possible he died here.

My grandfather, Isaac Wm. May b. Sept. 19, 1870 Titus Co. TX; died Oct. 15, 1962 Houston, Harris Co. TX was a brother of Jennie May Hightower. Jennie May Hightower and sons Albert and Daniel Hightower are listed on the 1910 Dallas, Dallas Co. TX census living w/her brother Isaac W. May and other family members.

Jennie May Hightower moved from Texas to California sometime after 1910.

Hi, I`m searching for decendants in America. My great-great-great grandfather was Olaf Thorsen from Norway/Sweden. He and his son Oluf(Olaf) Thorsen immigrated abt. 1891 to Minnesota, America. Olaf went back to Norway, while his son stayed and changed his name to Oluf(olaf) Thompson. He married Amanda Stay in Minnesota, the family moved to California, and they had the following children:
- Clifford Thompson Born: 1901 Minnesota. Dead: 1985 Sonoma County, California
- Nellie Thompson (Married Roberts) Born: 1911 Hennepin, Minnesota
Dead: 2005 Contra Costa California.

I found related people in 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census. It showed them living in Township 13, Contra Costa.
Does anyone know what town that is?

Ellinwood Woodman was born on May 26, 1867 in Chicago (Cook Co.), IL, son of Selden James Woodman, who died in 1923 in Oakland, CA. As of 1901, Ellinwood Woodman lived in North Topeka (Shawnee Co.), KS. On Jul. 13, 1901, he joined the Sons of the American Revolution, on behalf of the service of his Revolutionary War ancestors, James Crocker and Samuel Wescott.

As of 1930, Ellinwood Woodman lived in Oakland (Alameda Co.), CA. His wife was named Mina. He was shown as born in Illinois, with a father born in Maine -which is correct.

The California Death Index says that a man named Ellinwood Woodman died Nov. 26, 1951 in Contra Costa Co., CA. However, the birthdate in the index (Nov. 23, 1866) differs from that shown on his SAR application. The state of birth in the index (Kansas) differes from that shown on his SAR application and the 1930 census. This is enough to make me wonder if there were two Ellinwood Woodmans??

I am seeking the death date/ place and obituary of either. If the one who died in 1951 is reported to be the son of Selden Woodman, I will know they are one and the same.
