Byron Blaine Violett
Description: April 7, 1927-Sept. 3, 2008

Topics:
Posted by editor Wed Nov 30, -0001 00:00:00 PST
Viewed 965 times
0 responses 0 comments
larger view

Byron Blaine Violett, loving father of five, grandfather of nine and great grandfather of one, passed away on Sept. 3, 2008 at the age of 81 after an eight month bout with cancer.

His wife of 56 years, Joanne Turner Violett, passed away in March of 2007.

He was born April 7, 1927 on a homestead farm in Harlem, Montana, the youngest son of Dewey Cecil Violett and Anna Streiff Violett. He grew up in an era when he would ride his horse, Gyp, from the farm to the one-room schoolhouse his father founded, often toting his rifle. He graduated from high school at 16, joined the service at the end of WWII, and worked in a reclamation camp in Korea for a year.

Byron attended college at Montana State University, from which he graduated in 1950, with a degree in Agriculture. A year later he married Joanne, and he spent the next 30 years raising his family living in Montana, Oregon, Washington and finally settling in California in 1967, where he would live the rest of his life.

He worked in Sales and Marketing for Exxon for most of that time period; put his five children through college and was able to retire at the age of 56. Byron and Joanne moved to Bear Valley Springs in 1982, built a home, golfed, traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and world, yet found himself happiest puttering around his workshop. Always the itinerant farm boy, he loved to "work his land," planting various trees and vegetation and giving his grandkids tractor rides around his property.

He is survived by four daughters: Vicki Tate (granddaughters Jessica & Amanda and great-grandson Caiden), Roanna Bennie (grandsons Scott & Kevin), Sue Hillendahl and husband Jim (grandson Kyle); Jana Ostrovsky and husband Claudio (grandchildren Aaron, Tyler, Corrine & Kendra) and son Byron James Violett.

I'm sorry to report that there was no mention of any Mable that died on Feb. 15, 2004 in the Bakersfield Californian newspaper. I have that database in my computer and searched several ways: by last name, by first name, by date of death and there was nothing.

Sharon

Found her obit in the Tehachapi News
Here it is

Joanne Turner Violett
Description: May 4, 1929 – March 17, 2007

Topics:
Posted by editor Mon Mar 26, 2007 11:45:05 PDT
Viewed 916 times
0 responses 0 comments
larger view
Loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joanne cherished her family above all else. She gave so much of herself to others, possessed great qualities of character and kindness, lived with grace and had an innate goodness that touched all those who were lucky enough to be a part of her life.

Joanne was born to Olive Winsloe and James Harry Turner in Kansas City, Mo. Her father was a professional musician, and they travelled around the country before settling in Billings, Montana, where she finished school before attending Montana State University. There she met Byron Violett, and shortly after graduation in 1951, they were married. While in Montana, they had three children.

They lived in Oregon and Washington (where they added two more kids to the brood), and then moved to Northridge in 1967. She was a volunteer in the PTA, Red Cross, Little League, Job’s Daughters, Boy Scouts and spent 55 years in Girl Scouts in various capacities.

Joanne and Byron retired to Bear Valley Springs in 1982 and they traveled extensively, touring through all 50 states, as well as internationally. She had a lifelong love of sports, playing basketball, softball and volleyball and watching her kids’ and grandkids’ games prior to taking up golf in retirement, which became her great passion.

In addition to her devoted husband Byron, she leaves four daughters: Vicki Tate, Roanna Bennie, Sue Hillendahl and Jana Ostrovsky; and one son, Byron James Violett; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Joanne will be greatly missed.

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 24, at Tehachapi Public Cemetery-Eastside. Arrangements were handled by Wood Family Funeral Service.

DEATH: Higgins, Ben and John

The Nugget Gulch Tragedy

From facts developed at the coroners inquest held over the bodies of Ben and John Higgins at Nugget Gulch, it appears that there had been a resentful feeling existing between the two for some years. The old fued was renewed Friday morning by Ben but an end was put to the quarrel by another brother, William. In the afternoon, however, Ben appeared at the claim being worked by the ghree in conjunction, threw a pistol to John, told him to defend himself, but without waiting for the latter to move, raised a Winchester rifle and shot him through the neck, killing him instantly.

William who stood near rushed over to the wounded man's side while he was trying to revive him, he heard another report and saw Ben fall backwards. He had picked up the pistol and blown his brains out. Ben was probably insane.

The Bakersfield Daily Californian
April 26, 1896

Ben and John are buried in the East Kern Cemetery, Mojave, California

Posted by the East Kern Genealogical Society

Betty Jean Lindley 1925 - 2009 Betty was born on August 29, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Margaret and Harry M. Clark. Growing up in Toledo, she attended Woodward High School along with Jamie Farr, the actor from the television series M.A.S.H. After graduating from high school, Betty worked at Michigan Mutual, a local Toledo insurance agency. She met her future husband, John A. Lindley who was an Army recruiter in Toledo. Betty and John were married on September 28, 1946, and in the following years they had two sons, James and David. In 1959, the family was transferred to Bakersfield, California with John's employer, Pitney Bowes. Betty soon became active with the Newcomers Club after arriving in Bakersfield making new acquaintances, and continued her participation in later years through the club's auxiliary group where she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. In the late 60's, Betty began a second career in the Sears Catalog Department where her smiling face greeted many customers and friends for more than 20 years. When John decided to retire they spent time traveling and visiting with their friends. Betty passed away July 27, 2009, at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her husband John, and both of her parents. She is survived by her brother, Malcolm (Arlene), in Canton, Georgia; her son, Jim (Connie) and her son, Dave; her niece, Amanda; nephew, Josh and their families. Betty was a beautiful woman, wife, mother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and a good friend that will continue to influence our lives - for that we are fortunate. Betty's ashes will be scattered at sea and the family suggests that memorial donations can be made in her name with the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Published in Bakersfield Californian on August 16, 2009

The Social Security Death Index generally begins in 1965. There was no such service in 1909 since the Social Security Administration didn't begin until the early 1930's. So someone that was born in 1825 and died in 1909 ("she was born 8/29/25 & died July 27, 1909")would not have been alive when the SSA was begun. I think you must be confused about where you located her death information.

KCUHS is now Bakersfield High School, which has a wonderful archiving class, in which students learn to do not only archiving, but primary source research. The teacher's name is Ken Hooper, & his email address is ken_hooper@khsd.k12.ca.us
They almost certainly can help you - maybe scan the picture & email it to you. Good luck. Jeanne Webb
