John Carter Obituary-D.14Sept1912, Marin County

I am attempting to connect a couple, John & Mary Ann Carter, to my GGPs Martin & Margaret (Duane) O'Donnell.

John & Mary Ann are listed as godparents on one of my GGP's children's Sausalito baptism certificates from the mid 1880s. They were both farm families in Bolinas in the 1880s; the Carters later moved to Tomales (by the 1900 census) and my GGPs moved to Kern County in the late 1880s.

According to the 1900 census, John was born March 1840; Mary Ann, May 1847. John had a nephew, Carter N. Fair (Phair),(b. April 1895,CA) whom I believe to be John's sister's son. According to the 1900 census, Mary Ann had no children.

I'm looking for John Carter's obituary for his September 14, 1912 death in Marin County. I am unable to confirm the correct date of death for John's wife, Mary Ann Carter, whom I believe could be my GGF Martin O'Donnell's sister.

Any other assistance would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Barb

The Marin Journal
Thursday, April 23, 1908
page 3

Bolinas Pioneer Passed Away

SAMUEL P. WEEKS died at Bolinas April 15, 1908, aged 79. He was a native of Falmouth, Mass., and had been a resident of Bolinas since 1852. A man of exemplary habits, honest to a fault, he had friends wherever he was known and was one of the most honored citizens of Bolinas and Marin County. Mr. Weeks was one of the early pioneers who helped hew the way for those who came after him - helped place California on the map as the great commonwealth of the Pacific Coast. And, after a life of usefulness, he "folds the canopy of his tent about and lies down to pleasant dreams". Peace to his memory.

Deceased was the loving father of Mrs. P. McKinnon of Mexico, Mrs. R.L. Randall of Santa Rosa, Mrs. S. Runckel of Bolinas, Mrs. F.R. Sheaver of Bisbie, Arizona, and Mrs. J.W. Silva of Bolinas.

The funeral took place from the family home at Bolinas. Interment in Bolinas Cemetery.
John LaFranchi, Augustine Albertoni murder - 1911

Marin Journal
Thursday, March 16, 1911
page 5

Double Murder on Ignacio Ranch
Befriended Stranger Repays Kindness with Bullets

At 4 o'clock last Saturday morning JOHN LaFRANCHI, his wife and nephew, AUGUSTINE ALBERTONI, were shot by a stranger whom they had harbored overnight. LaFranchi was killed almost instantly, Albertoni died within an hour, and Mrs. LaFranchi is confined to the Cottage Hospital with bullet wounds through both of her limbs.

According to the story told by Mrs. LaFranchi, a man came to their home, which is on a part of the Pacheco ranch near Ignacio, late Friday afternoon, and asked for work. He stated his inability to milk, but LaFranchi decided to give him a trial anyway.

The man was taken in and given a good dinner, but his weird talk and the wild ideas he expressed somewhat alarmed the family, so instead of permitting to sleep in the house, they furnished him with blankets and a bed in the barn.

About 4 o'clock Saturday morning, while LaFranchi, his wife and Albertoni were engaged in milking in the cow shed, the visitor walked in and without warning, shot Albertoni. LaFranchi sprang at him as he advanced and was also shot. Mrs. LaFranchi endeavored to make her escape, but the fiend fired twice, the bullets taking effect in both of her limbs. He then made his escape and has since eluded every attempt made to apprehend him.

After the shooting, in spite of her crippled condition, Mrs. LaFranchi made her way to the Pacheco home to bring assistance to her husband and nephew. LaFranchi was dead, and Albertoni expired shortly afterwards. Dr. Kuser attended Mrs. LaFranchi and afterwards removed her to the Cottage Hospital.

The double funeral of the two murdered men took place on Tuesday morning from St. Raphael's Church, in San Rafael, thence to Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

John LaFranchi was 52 years of age and his nephew 19.

My name is Michael Henry and I am with the Library of American Broadcasting, a research library at the University of Maryland devoted to the history of radio and television broadcasting. I am researching the career of Jerry Belcher (1895-1962), who worked in San Francisco radio from the late 1940's to the mid-1950's. I was wondering if anyone may know information about his radio career in SFO, may have heard him on the air, may have been interviewed by him on the air.

I appreciate any information anyone can share. I can be contacted at mlhenry@umd.edu

Thank you for your assistance.

-Michael Henry
Library of American Broadcasting

LIVING RELATIVES: Stevenson, Manss, Walker

LOOKING FOR ANY LIVING RELATIVE OF: Jack Stevenson MANSS & wife, Josephine Harlow Manss, married 1948, Hollywood CA.

All my Stevenson relatives moved to CA in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, most of whom I never knew, except for gmother & uncle. Some cousins, however, I understand, lived in Marin Co. Namely, I think, Evelyn Stevenson Walker Blankenship Davis and her sister & bro-in-law & family, Charles & Matilda Stevenson Manss. I was told by my mother, that Evelyn's last husband was a doctor = Dr. Davis? Matilda's children that I'm aware of were/are: Gloria, Roxanne and Jack Stevenson Manss.

I believe that Jack was in LA in 1948 because he was at least married there. There was also a friend of the family, Mary Nelson, who lived in/near Sausilito in the 50's.

Jack's mother was Matilda Stevenson MANSS; his father, ?Charles. Gloria Manss' mother also Matilda Roxanne ? uncertain; b. ca 1940, mother poss. also Matilda Ronnie Walker, b. 1927 - 1930 Evalyn Stevenson Walker Blankenship DAVIS, I think Ronnie & Gloria lived in the Ross Co. OH area w/their parents until approx. 1936. It is said that they then moved to California.

My grandmother, Katherine M. Nash STEVENSON, also moved w/Uncle Job E. Stevenson to LA in approx 1950-51, & kept in touch w/some or all of the above relatives. My father was Flournoy David John STEVENSON, 1st cousin to Matilda & Evalyn.

Matilda & Evalyn's parents were Job Evans & Gladys Warnock STEVENSON.

I've recently become acquainted with a couple of people who knew Ronnie & Gloria when they were young children in Ross Co. OH: Martha Slager (Gerber) Rittinger & Naomi (Murphy) Hutchison.

Not only would I be very much interested in corresponding with any relative of the above; but I would very much like them to come to the 200 yr. celebration of the founding of the Springbank United Methodist Church, of which our ggggrfather was the first pastor. The celebration is Sept. 5th, 1999.

Any help in locating any of these persons or relatives of these persons is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
djstevenson
Dalessi.

The funeral will take place at St. Raphael's Church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock a.m.
____________________________________________________________
Thursday, September 1, 1904
page 5

Many Attend Mrs. PEZZAGLIA's Funeral

The funeral of Mrs. ANASTASIA PEZZAGLIA took place in this city last Friday. The high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who knew her in her lifetime was amply shown by the great number of sorrowing friends who came from far and near to pay their last respects to one they had loved.

The funeral took place from St. Raphael's Church where a solemn High Mass was celebrated for the repose of her soul. Rev. Father Phillips officiated. After the services at the church, the long line of carriages followed the hearse out to Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where the interment took place. The following old-time friends acted as pall bearers: G. Paletti, L. Poma, E. Alberti, S. Pezzaglia, M. Lafranchi, and F. Robetz of Santa Rosa.

I have a postcard dated March 1932 from my great uncle Alfred Owen Plummer (b 1876 Orange NSW Australia).

It is a b/w postcard of Woodacre. In the postcard, written to his parents he talks of bad weather and that "readjustment of ships has made business very bad"

Any clues as to what business one might be in in Woodacre that would be effected by weather? He came from a large farming family in Australia.

TIA
