Gilbert Douglas/s b. 1822 - 1870 & 1880 in Mariposa

Hi
I'm trying to find a Gilbert Douglas who was born in 1822 in either Vermont or New York. I found one in Mariposa on both the 1870 and 1880 Census's with a wife named Hannah E., Gilbert is listed as a miner. Unfortunately in 1870 there is also a Gilbert Douglas in Clayton County, Iowa as well (where his om died in 1864)- same age - differnt birth location, but parents in the same states.... Soooo... lol
Is there anyway for me to find out if he is my Gilbert? Suggestions? Leads?
