Did this murder occur in Mariposa County?

My gg-grandfather's brother Stephen Bond (born 26Aug1825 England) went to California and died there. I have been trying to discern exactly where. I am pasting a copy of a newspaper notice from May 1873.

"The Evansville Journal says information was received in that city a few days since, of the murder, in California, of Stephen Bond, son of Mr. Cornelius Bond, a resident of this county near Millersburg, and a brother of Mrs. Isaac Mills, of Evansville. The Journal says:

The murder was committed last fall but the friends of the deceased were not apprised of it until quite recently, as it occurred in a wild region, about 50 miles from Maripoza, and twelve miles from his nearest neighbor, his only companion being a dog. The murder was not discovered until four days after it was committed, and all that is conjectured about it is that some person called on him pretending to desire to purchase some of the merchandise he kept for sale, and while was in the act of serving them, shot him through the head. This was conjectured from the position of the body when found. The assassin is known to have secured $120 in gold and a gold watch, and probably a great deal more.

Mr. Bond left this city twenty-three years ago in company with a Mr. Bradford. Both gentlemen were well known to all the older citizens. The deceased was forty-eight years old, a bachelor, and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows. His lodge at Bear Valley, California, has transmitted to this city resolutions of respect to his memory. Mr. B. was possessed of considerable property, and Mr. John Mills, of this city, has gone to California to take charge of his effects for his relatives."

I am searching Mariposa County from the mention of "Maripoza" and that he was a member of the Bear Valley IOOF - and this is the only Bear Valley I could find that has/had an IOOF.

If it did not happen in Mariposa County, could someone hazard a guess where it did?

Thank You

Norwegian Gulch/Tent

Hello! My relative John Hesler was from Norway. He moved from Rochester NY to Hornitos by 1860, as he is listed in the 1860 US census there. By 1863 he had moved to Mariposa where he was a boot and shoemaker. He has a paper trail in Mariposa. I am curious about the root of Norwegian Gulch - was it founded by Norwegians? Or was the connection something else? Were there Norwegians in the area during the Rush?

Thank you.

Steve Heimerle

Geary Family of Mariposa

I am a great great grandson of John Geary and his wife Ellen, whose maiden name was either Moran or Foran. Both husband and wife were from Ireland. They reached California before gold was discovered and so were among the very first to reach the Mother Lode. They lived long-term in Mariposa County. John Geary was one of the original miners of the Whitlock Mining District, a few miles from the town of Mariposa. Both John and Ellen died in the early 1890s at Whitlock's. They and three of their children are buried at St. Joseph's Church cemetery in Mariposa, in graves situated very near the church itself. Their daughter Bridget was among the very first individuals buried in the graveyard.

I am seeking info from anyone who may know details about this family. My own research is at an advanced stage, so please do not refer me to obvious internet sources such as Ancestry.com or MariposaResearch.net. Chances are you will only be quoting my own research back at me. I'm looking for original, direct, within-the-family sort of sources.

To see some of what I've already found about the Geary, Moran, Foran family, see my webpage at "http://home.comcast.net/~davesmeds/geary.htm".

Dave Smeds
My greatgreatgrandfather arrived from France between 1854/1856 and settled in Indian Gulch, Mariposa County. My greatgrandfather Thomas Albert Autrand, his brother Joseph and his sister Clara are listed in the Indian Gulch, Mariposa County 1880 Census. Clara Autrand later married Charles (Carlos) Merino. My greatgreatgrandfather Vicente Coz and his family including my greatgrandmother Josepha (Josephina) Coz are listed in the Hornitos, Mariposa County 1880 Census. I have been researching both of these families for the last two years and I would like to share and exchange information with other interested descendants of the family.

James Allen McKenney died in Mariposa on 3 Oct 1954. He had been born in Missouri in 1878/9 and was first enumerated in the census in 1920 (in Parlier, Fresno County) and then in 1930 (Oakland, Alameda County). He was a physician.

I suspect that he 'retired' to Mariposa and probably did not have a long history there. Nevertheless, I wonder how I might find an obit for him? Any suggestions where in Mariposa County to look? Newspaper? Library? Kind researcher who lives in the county who might look for me?

His wife, Florence Wash, d. in 1959 in Modoc County where I suspect she went to live with one of her married sons.

James and Florence had at least:

Philip W.
Lucy Brown - died allegedly at 120 years old Oct 1924

The article posted below is the only time Lucy Brown's husband was referred to as "Mono Tom" Brown except for people who have since erroneously repeated that phrase from the United Press article that appeared in the Modesto Bee. Lucy was thought to be the oldest person alive at the time and there were numerous articles across the nation published about her death.

The journalist was obviously sloppy and inaccurate in his reporting. Lucy Brown did not die of a heart attack as he reports. If he had verified his facts he would have found out she died after suffering from a cold for a few days. I have a three page report from her Doctor. Below is an abbreviated account of her death certificate and the coroner's report.

While it says Pete Hilliard was her grandson, he was in fact only such through marriage not bloodline. Lucy had 2 sons that died young and one daughter - all from a prior marriage. Bill Brown had 2 children from a prior marriage.

Any decendants of this family can contact me directly.

Mariposa County Bk 2 page 48
Yosemite National Park

Mrs. Lucy Brown (Indian) dod Oct 1924
sex: female marital status: widowed bp: unknown
age: relatives say 120 yrs old
occ: in house*
spouse: Bill Brown
father: unknown bp: unk
mother: " " bp: "
length of res: 120 yr est. in CA estimate
informant: Pete Hilliard (grandson) age 54yr

I hereby certify as to the person .................that on
Oct 20, 1924 ........that I have investigated the death
officially on account of
(written over top of preprinted statement and is not
completely readable)
cause: Death due to natural causes on account of old age and
contraction of a cold.
physician: Dr. Elanda M.
Good Evening all. I am looking for information on my birth mother,Sue Bettis (a.k.a Sue Garcia) who lived in coulterville from 1990 until her death in 1998. I just recently found out she was deceased, but have no idea how she died. I know she must have married Rick Bettis, who according to the court reports, was her boyfriend for quite some time. I know he was a truck driver and she worked at a restaraunt for six or seven years. Thanks for any help in advance.

Our Autrand side of the family came to California from France between 1854-1857 and settled in Indian Gulch, California, they appear in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Mariposa County Census. Our Coz side of the family settled in Hornitos, California, and appear in the 1880 Mariposa County Census. Both sides of the family owned land in Mariposa County, we do have the land certificates and papers. We do know that two of the Autrand brothers that first came to Mariposa County died in there between 1860 and 1880. Can someone guide me about where to get information about baptisms and death records during that time. Where are the Catholic Church records of that time? Or the Cemetery records of that time? Thanks in advance to all those volunteers for any help and consideration of this matter.

For some words that passed between the 2 about a mere trifle, SMITH returned after the lapse of an hour or 2 to where SHOEMAKER was at work, armed with a bowie knife and swore to kill him. He commenced the attack by the use of such epithets as tempted Mr. SHOEMAKER to strike at him with a plank, when SMITH plunged the knife he held secreted in his hand, into SHOEMAKER's abdomen. The wounded man then turned, fled and was pursued and cut in several other places. He died from the effects of his wounds a few days after. SMITH was arrested and is now in jail. Deceased was an amiable, excellent man, highly respected and in his unfortunate death is much lamented.

I can track Ruby and Fred from California into first Oregon for 1910 census and then into Yakima Co., WA for 1920 census. Ruby and Fred have these children:
ESTHER ABT 1906
GLADYS ABT 1909
Andrew abt 1918
John V. abt 1921
William abt 1923 and Gaelen G. abt 1925.
Fred marries a second time to a Josephine Iverson (her widowed surname). It is Josephine who is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Yakima Co, WA, not Ruby Juanita (Varain) Meiser.
Seeking 2 things:
who is Ruby the daughter of?
where is Ruby buried? (and what is her death date? The 1930 census has Fred meiser as married with his sister Bertha Cervine living witgh him, widowed, so it seems as if Ruby would still be alive in 1930?

I am looking for a MOSS family in Mariposa County...The 1860 census lists a Sarah Calhoun br OH with children Churchill Moss, br 1844 TX, Norman Moss, br 1847 TX, Silas Moss, br 1849 CA, W M Calhoun, br 1854 CA, John, br 1856 CA and Sarah Calhoun, br 1859 CA. Silas Moss died 1903 in Mariposa County. Norman Moss was listed along with his wife Nancy, in the 1900 census Mariposa County. Churchill Moss, my great great grandfather left for southern Oregon where he lived most of the rest of his life. Is there anyone looking for Norman's family? What about the Calhoun children? Any relations there? Silas aparently never married and as far as I know had no children.

This site is called "ancestry.com". It's intention is useful information to be distributed for seekers of their ancestors. Yose Mite uses this site for his political campaign on the origins of the Yosemite area Indians. I find this very inconsiderate and disruptive. If this continues, I will report this to ancestry.com.

Message to Yose Mite - I find your posts, including those directed to me personally, to be juvenile and not worthy of a reply. Anyone discerning who compares what you allege is in documentation with what you attached can readily see the disparity for themselves. I can see the "campaign" on the issue being put on the web. Do you not realize that with your behavior the only thing you are doing is being an irritant and giving that campaign an associated bad reputation? Find a forum where people care about your dribble and leave the genealogy seekers of Mariposa County alone instead of this running dialogue where you idiotically post to yourself.

For those coming here for accurate information about their genealogical roots, I would ignore these posts. Lena Rube, wife to Johnny Brown and mother to Christian Melvin, Virgil, Alvis, Hazel and Emma was not Mono or Paiute. If you are a descendant of this family, please feel free to contact me.

Some one I know got Eadweard Muybridge's Yosemite Indian photos and noticed that they had numbers on them.

He noticed that there was a sequencal order to the numbers and put them together and this is up he came up with.

http://thehive.modbee.com/?q=node/1620

He had seen certain photos before like "Piute Chief's Lodge" and decide to put them together by numbers and this is up he came up with.

This would be of interest to any person who are interested in early Yosemite Native American life. He did it so you can see the progression.

I don't know if anyone is related to Captain John or any of the other Paiutes captians can tell if that is your ancestor, but they are great to those interested in Yosemite Indian genealogy or Mariposa Indian history.

Sharon, here are your famous Yosemite Native American Basket Makers. Some of the best Basket makers. Their works are in the Yosemite Indian museum and others.

1. Tiny Young Charlie, Carrie Bethel, Alice Wilson, Lena Tom, and Maggie "Taboose" Howard. ALL MONO INDIANS. Taboose is Paiute for Nut Grass.

2. Mono County Basket Makers - Emma Williams, Lucy Telles, Carrie McGowan, Tina Charlie, and Minnie (Lena) Brown, mother of Chris Brown.

3. Yosemite Indian Field days...held at June Lake...Mono County - Mono Paiutes and their baskets.

4. Yosemite Indian Field Days...held at June Lake...Mono County - Mono Paiutes and their baskets.

A lot of these baskets ended up in the Yosemite Indian Museum in Mariposa County as Miwok-Paiute baskets, but they were NOT Miwoks....not by their 1928 California Indian Applications and other documentation.

You saw the 1924 Yosemite article about the Ranger Townsley going to Mono County to pick up their baskets to sell in Yosemite, Mariposa County.

Mono Lake was once part of Mariposa County and Yosemite was once part of Mono Paiute territory.

In 1939 Susie Leonard requested assistance from the County, for Indians.

To do so, she asked for a paper from Sacramento Area Bureau of Indian Affairs with a document showing her "Indianess" to see if she qualified.

Here is Susie Leonard's 1939 reply letter showing her Indian blood degree from Sacramento area BIA.

Note that it shows that she was not a Yosemite Miwok, but 1/2 Casson or Casson Yokut. Yokuts were original Indians of Madera. Later on The Leonard's moved to Madera County to live.

This is an official document. Taken from the National Archives. There is an official National Archives stamp and writing on the top of the document. Anyone can go there and get this copy...plus many, many others. If they are interested in getting information of Indians in the area and ancestry.

Today many of her descendents are misinformed. Believing they are Miwok, but they are actually Casson Yokut. Hopefully this will help them figure out their Indian ancestry.

Later some of one children married into the Amos's, another Casson Yokut family from Madera County.

Here is a photo of Mamie and Freddie Brown. Like most of the Indians in the Yosemite and Mono Lake Area the Brown name was associated with Paiutes.

Even early photos at the Yosemite Research Center indicate this.

Here is a photo of some of the Brown family. Who were Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes.

It was really hard to find any early photos of Miwoks in Yosemite. Even in the Yosemite Research Library.

There were lots of early Paiute photos.

So Mamie and Freddie Brown are Yosemite Paiutes and not Miwoks.

Yosemite Indians are Outlaw Paiutes - Pony Express article.

From the Pony Express Periodical. An E Campus Vitus group that delt with Gold Mining History and Western Pioneer accounts. March 1956

This is the transcribed version of the story.

YOSEMTIE INDIANS ARE
OUTLAW PIUTES

Camp Barbour in 1851 produced
the great frontiersman. Major
James D. Savage, leader of the
Mariposa Battalion, who with
Andrew D. Firebaugh, chased out-
law Piute Indians back into Yose-
mite Valley, which led to its dis-
covery. It is obvious they were
not Miwoks and Diggers. They
were peaceful, certainly not war-
like enough to go out rading Fort
Barbour (later Fort Miller) built
with soldiers armed with cap and ball
muskets. Also, this is refuted by
the testimony of veteran David
Williamson to the Pony Express
the late Williamson (born at Fort
Churchill in the 1860s) whose
father was an army officer, was
told differently by Johnny Calico,
son of Chief Winnemucca. Johnny
as a kid in 1860, witnessed White
Man's route up the Truckee River
from Lake Pyramid, in the so-
called battle of Lake Pyramid
which was not a "battle" but a
very fast route, so fast as the
soldiers could get away on horse-
back. His father told him that
all unruly renegedes in the tribe
(The Piutes had no jails) had
been exiled for generations over
the mountains west of the big
lake (which was Mono Lake).
So there are your tough out-law
Yosemite Indians that Savage and
Firebaugh chased with their Mari-
posa Battalion in 1851.

*They were renegede Paiutes. The common people of the Mono Paiutes bragged about their exploits they were like Robin Hood in their eyes.

*There is a town called Firebaugh that now exists in the area.

Interesting Yosemite Indian reference in book.

From the book "The Disputed Lands; A history of the American West" by Alexander B. Adams.

Transcribed is a very interesting paragraph;

"The impact of crowds of strangers in both California and Oregon upset the Indians' way of life. In California they had long become accustomed to the rule of the Spaniards and had accepted their own role as second-class citizens. The Spaniards, however, had concentrated their settlements and missions along the coast, and their influence had little effect on the Indians in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
An imaginative entrepreneur, named James D. Savage, took advantage of their comparative ignorance. Soon he had the Indians - some reports said hundreds of them - hunting the stream beds for gold, which he purchased from them at ridiculously low prices. ONLY THE YOSEMITE INDIANS, WHO LIVED FARTHER EAST, CAUSE HIM TROUBLE. Their attacks on his posts as well as on other white miners moving into the area produced a short conflict. Savage led a punitive expedition against them, during which he entered the Yosemite Valley and saw its marvelous beauty."

Chief Bautista, Cypriano, Pasquale, and other chiefs signed the treaties and worked whole-heartedly for James Savage. Chief Bautista was James Savage's best overseer. It was reported he would capture Indian run-a-ways who tried to escape the toil of the gold mines.

James Savage did watch out for them and helped them fight their enemies who lived in the high Sierra's, the Paiutes (or Ahwahneechees). That is why when he was killed in 1852, they cried and wailed on his death. They called him "their White Father" and the whites called him "The White Chief".

This is from "The Pony Express" August 1952.

"The outlaw Piutes wree read out of the tribe farther north in early part of 19th century. Some of them were chased south, and some west over the Sierra Mountains into the Yosemite Valley region. In 1851 they raided Camp Barbour (later called Fort Miller 20 miles NE of Fresno) and were chased by Major James Savage, Andrew Firebaugh, and their soldiers. In the pursuit Yosemite was discovered. CONTRARY TO BELIEF, THE YOSEMITE INDIANS ARE NOT CALIFORNIA DIGGERS, BUT THE DESCENDENTS OF OUTLAW PIUTES, as per testimony of Johnny Calico (son of Chief Winnemucca) to the late David Williamson, historian of Nevada, and in testimony of Williamson to H. Hamlin."

Notice that "testimony" of a historian quoting Johnny Calico, son of Chief Winnemucca that the Yosemite Indians are "Outlaw Piutes". Some of the part of the Battalions is a little off, but the testimony of the Johnny Calico is very interesting.

More historical reference about Yosemite Indians really being Paiutes.

See the actual Pony Express account below.

Calico is well known Paiute last name now.

Chief Winnemucca was the head Northern Paiute throughout Nevada, Idaho, Oregon and California. Then there were sub-chiefs of areas, and then captains of camps and areas.

Yosemite Indians in the news - Oldest Indian "Squaw" is Dead

This is from the San Francisco Bulletin, July 16th 1921.

Someone transcribe this and it is on another site. I don't care for the "Squaw" reference but that is old newspapers printed in 1921.

OLDEST INDIAN SQUAW DEAD

by the United Press

YOSEMITE, Mariposa Co., Oct.
21. - Lucy Brown, last member of
the orginal Indian tribe found in
the Yosemite Valley when the white
men came, is dead, aged 120 years.
The famous old squaw succumbed
to heart disease yesterday and will
be buried to-day in the tiny Indian
burying ground, to rest beside her
husband, MONO Tom Brown.
All last night Lucy's descendents
- six generations of the Brown
family - sat or paced about a great
camp fire paying homage to her
memory. The guttural exlcama-
tions of the braves, the wailing of
the squaws and the crackling of
the fire composed her requiem.
Thousands of people who have
visited the valley in increasing
yearly numbers since its discovery
in 1851 knew the old woman, who
received her callers with wrinkled
impassiveness, content with her
reputation as the oldest Indian and
one of the oldest women in the
United States.

In Craig Bates writings he never mentions the "Mono" part in book.

In Bates book he uses this and the other news story I posted as "sources" for his writings, but never mentions that they live at Mono Lake. Also that they were Mono Indians (Paiutes).

Also how can a Miwok man have a title "MONO"?
Yosemite Indians in the news - Mono Indian Wins High Sierra Belt

From the San Francisco Chronicle Sept. 8th 1929 - Yosemite News

Mono Indian Wins High Sierra Belt

YOSEMITE. Sept. 7 - Harry
Tom, full-blood Mono Indian. to-
day added enough points to his to-
total of yesterday to annex the all-
round horse riding championship
of the High Sierras. Four thousand
people saw Tom thunder past the
grandstand in the final horse race.
winning the title and along with it
a specially engraved saddle and the
first leg of the James M. Schwa-
bacher silver trophy. The Wawona
cowboys evened up scores for the
white men by winning the potato
race from the Mono Indians by a
score of 22 to 19.
Archette Westphall, the 4-year-
old miss on the big horse gave a
fine example of horsemanship.
Ranger John Wagner took first
place in the steeplechase race with
Eddie Gordon. Wawona second Al-
vis Brown, Mono Lake, captured the
chaps and spur race. Harry Tom
out-tricked his brother Mack in the
trick riding contests. Gene Mac-
Gregor, Hornitos, won the muscial
chair dash with Tom Sovulewskie,
second.

It shows that Harry Tom, Mack Tom, and Alvis Brown and Westphall

Harry and Mack Tom are children of Louisa and Bridgeport Tom. Louisa Tom is the daughter of Captain Sam and Susie Sam.

There other children were famous Yosemite Basketmakers.

Alvis Brown brother is brother of Chris Brown; Chief Lemee. Son of Johnny Brown and Lena Rube-Wilson resides at Mono Lake.
Is anyone sure they know who the parents of " Piute George "were?
Carolyn

from this website:
http://www.yosemite.ca.us/library/yosemite_yarns/boston_kill...
THE INJUNS KILLED BOSTON

DOWN CASCADES way about seven or eight miles below Yosemite Valley there’s a big rock with a flat side on it. If you take a good look you’ll see the outlines of an old fireplace on it. That and a headboard in the cemetery in Yosemite Valley are about all that are left of George Ezra Boston, who used to be tollkeeper on the old Coulterville Road.

“Everybody liked Boston but somehow he got on the wrong side of Piute George, a renegade Indian who was runnin’ from the sheriff and holed up not far from Boston’s station. One evenin’ George was passin’ Boston’s place with a couple of friends, about suppertime. The tollkeeper, bein’ a generous gent invited the Indians in to eat with him. This they did and while Boston had his back turned, cleanin’ up the dishes, Piute George shot him. Another Indian cut his throat, just to make sure he was dead. Then they set fire to his cabin to hide what they had done.

“Ol’ Piute George really took to the rocks after that. A couple of the local folks finally coaxed him down by sendin’ up another Indian and gettin’ him drunk. They were staked out and waitin’ for him as he came slinkin’ along the trail and when he got close one of them let him have it in the backside with both barrels of a shotgun.

“Doesn’t seem possible that he lived through it but Mrs. Leidig and some of the Indian women nursed him back to health. I heard they cleaned out his wounds by runnin’ long feathers dipped in bear grease through them! He was tried for murder and sent to San Quentin for the rest of his life.”
A Piute. His wife was Mary. A sister was Sally Ann. They had three sons; Frank lives in Sonora, California, where he worked for the lumber company for some time. Roland died some years ago. John, no record at this time.

Charlie was a wood cutter for Yosemite National Park many years. He was the first to operate a power saw. He cut many cords of wood for the Park. When he became too old, and was no longer wanted as a wood cutter, he died, about 1930, and was buried in Coulterville, California."

George Washington Casson Yokut and Jennie Washington Chuckansi Yokut

George Washington is a full blooded Casson Yokut from Mariposa/Madera County.

He married Jennie Busby who's father was a white and named David Busby and mother was Chuckansi Yokut from Madera County.

They made their home in both Mariposa and Madera Counties. They would travel back and forth and Jennie Washington was a basket maker in Yosemite.

Jennie Washington baskets are in the Yosemite National Park Indian Museum.

Craig Bates, the official Yosemite National Park Indian ethnologist implied that Jennie Washington was Miwuk/Chuckansi in his book Tradition and Innovation, but that is incorrect.

Here is the a website that has Jennie Washington's 1928 California Indian Application and what the Yosemite Indian Museum has her labeled:

http://thehive.modbee.com/?q=node/372

They imply that Jennie is Miwok/Chuckansi, but she is 1/2 white and 1/2 Chuckansi.

She is not Miwok nor Paiute, but half Chuckansi Yokut and her husband George Washington was a full blooded Casson Yokut.

You can view Jennie Washington's 1928 application on the linked site.

I don't know why the Yosemite National Park Service has Indians who are Yokuts and Paiutes as Miwoks?

That is why Indian genealogy is very important, because as you can see people are getting it wrong.

There is a lot of misinformation going on around here.

For those people who ever read Lafayette H. Bunnell's book "The Discovery of the Yosemite, 1851, and the war that led to that event" documents:

Chief Tenaya or Ten-ie-ya was born of an Awahneechee father and a Mono Lake Paiute mother.

That means that Chief Tenaya was documented to be 1/2 Mono Lake Paiute.

Tenaya grew to adulthood at Mono Lake and married a Mono Lake Paiute woman.

They had several children.

That would mean that Chief Tenaya's children would be 3/4s Mono Lake Paiute.

There has been a lot of misinformation out there regarding this.

People should read the book.

Here is is:

http://www.webroots.org/library/usahist/dotyaiw0.html

The only written account of Chief Tenaya's ancestry.

Even in Maria Lebrado's story it states she is the granddaughter of Chief Tenaya and his "Piute" wife.

Chief Tenaya was 1/2 and married a Paiute woman.

So his children would be 3/4s Paiute.

It is surprising that Chief Tenaya's descendent didn't know that? It is kinda of surprising.

Mariposa Genealogy Friends - NEW WEBSITE

I apologize for the abundance of email that I know filters through here to my Mariposa genealogy friends. As you know, for years I worked at collecting information - accurate and verifiable information - on my Indian ancestors of Mariposa. Many years ago, I benefited from shared information from you which led me and supported me to the right sources.

As you can tell, I am greatly disturbed by the mis-information being put on the net and feel strongly compelled to refute it - for future genealogy seekers to not be mis-led.

A debate towards truth when conducted by citing sources can be productive. I know anyone wanting the truth would never accept hearsay.

As you know, years ago I had a Mariposa Indian Website where I shared information and documents- such as the much talked about Petition to Congress - as well as census I painstakingly transcribed - and other documents.

At this point, I am taking the current discussion off of this board. In the future my dialogue will be strictly on my new website - which will not be devoted to sharing the genealogy of the Mariposa Indians I have collected - nor sharing documents such as the Petition to Congress which information can in turn be misconstrued.

My new website's purpose is singular - to address the fallacious contention of a small group of people that the Ahwahneechees/Yosemites as well as other tribes being pulled into this - were all Paiutes. As always, my approach will not be because I said so - but will be backed with sources.

In Craig Bates book Tradition and Innovation on pages 147 and 150. Bates write that Nellie Jim and sister Tina Jim are married to a "Miwok" named Young Charlie.

Young Charlie was a Yosemite Indian.

Craig Bates implies that Young Charlie is a son of "Miwok" Chief.

See photo of Nellie and Tina Charlie as written by Craig Bates below.

NOW page 79 of the same book, Tradition and Innovation, is photo of Jennie Sam.

Craig Bates writes Jennie Sam is "a PAIUTE woman from Mono Lake". That she is Paiute. That her basketry is Paiute.

What Bates does not realize is that Young Charlie and Jennie (CHARLIE) Sam ARE brother and sister.

They are from the same parents. PAIUTES Dick Charlie and Mary Charlie. Dick and Mary Charlie had many, many children and grandchildren in and around Yosemite and Mono Lake. They were all Paiutes.

Here is Jennie Charlie-Sam from Craig Bates' Tradition and Innovation where it states she is a Mono Lake Paiute in Yosemite. see below:

Remember Mono Lake is only 11 miles from the eastern side of Yosemite.

Here is a link for those who want to see some of the oldest photos of Yosemite Indians. Some of these photos are rarely seen.

http://www.yosemitecampers.com/discus/messages/29/1920.html?...

They are Yosemite Mono Paiutes.

The photos show Chief Dick's cabin in Yosemite next to acorn graneries. Sadie and Susie McGowan and others. They were the Paiutes of Yosemite.

No the titles are NOT made up.

They were what was written on them or classified as.

These are some of the oldest photos taken IN Yosemite by photographers who lived IN Yosemite Valley.

Sharon, here is are these documents we found on the internet with Lancisco Wilson indicated as the headman of the main Southern Sierra Miwuk village.

http://gis.esri.com/library/userconf/proc05/papers/pap1803.p...

http://www.georgewright.org/0533gaskell.pdf

You can search for Lancisco Wilson's name in PDF search where it states that Lancisco Wilson was the headman of the man Southern Sierra Miwuk village.

Now here is Lancisco Wilson's gravemarker a few yards away from the Yosemite Indian Museum and Yosemite Research Center.

Interesting that no one walked a couple of yards to see Lancisco Wilson's gravemarker? The gravemarker where it reads: Lancisco Wilson "PIUTE" which of course means he was Paiute and not Miwuk.

Tom Hutchings, first mailman in Yosemite was Mono Paiute.

Sharon, where is your proof that Tom Hutchings (Hudgens) was a Miwok?

You can't mention Craig Bates writings because Craig Bates writings are questionable since he is married to a Miwok and has a Miwok son. He never even answered the descendents of Tom Hutchings when they asked where he got his information.

They wanted to know where he got the information that their ancestor was Miwok since they always knew he was Paiute and they have all his Paiute information. His wife was a Paiute and his children spoke Paiute. All his documenation shows he is Paiute. They never had to ask why he was Paiute because they live it every day. They even live on Paiute reservations. Yet the Southern Sierra Miwuks have him as a Miwok and none of his family is in the group.

In the Yosemite Research Library there is a picture of Tom Hutchings.

See below of the photo of Tom Hutchings.

Then see the actual back of the photo of taken from the Yosemite Research Library of Tom Hutchings.

They wanted to know why Craig Bates and the Southern Sierra Miwoks have their ancestor as a Miwok and have him in their paperwork for federal recognition as a Miwok?

They hold no hatred towards any Miwok person, but they do not like the fact that their ancestor has been changed TO A Miwok and no one told them how he is a Miwok? Then they are not part of the group.

This IS FROM the Yosemite Research Library. In all Tom Hutchings documentation HE IS Mono Paiute.
I have researched the Petition to Congress by Yosemite Indians and have found that most of the signers were actually Paiutes or Piutes.

Lancisco Wilson - Paiute
Chief George Dick - Paiute
their sons - Paiute
Pedro - Paiute
Captain Reuben - Paiute
Jim - Paiute
Bill - Paiute
Henry - Paiute
the Toms: Bridgeport Tom and Tom Hutchings - Paiutes
Captain John - Paiute
Captain John's son - Paiute

There were two locations that the Paiutes came from Yosemite and Mono Lake.

No signers like Cypriano and Chief Baustista or the Howards were signers.

They had a reservation down by Merced Falls, in Merced County.

That is why several of their people were born at Bear Valley which is by Merced Falls. That is about 35 miles away.

Mono Lake is about 11 miles away from the eastern entrance of Yosemite.

Chief Tenaya and his band of Yosemite Indians were Mono Paiutes.

A sickness overwhelmed and decimated the Ahwahneechees.

A tribe that Chief Tenaya himself said was unlike any surrounding tribes.

Chief Tenaya's father took the handful of remaining surviviors, not to neigbhoring Miwok areas, but to war like Paiute Mono Lake, also known as Teniega Bah. There Chief Tenaya's father married a Mono Lake Paiute woman and had Chief Tenaya or Tenieya.

Decades later when Tenaya grew to adulthood he married a Mono Lake Paiute woman. They had several children.

Later a medicine man advised Tenaya that it was safe to return to Yosemite. Tenaya took about 200 Indian back into Yosemite.

There Chief Tenaya was the founder of the Pai-ute Colony or Ahwahni.

Chief Tenaya also spoke a Paiute jargon.

Chief Tenaya's band was made up of Mono Paiutes and few outlaws from the western tribes.

Chief Tenaya's band were lighter and taller then the western tribes.

Those in Chief Tenaya's band were made up Monos and Paiutes from Nevada.

They spoke Paiute and Monache and not Miwok.

That is from Lafayette H. Bunnell's Discovery of the Yosemites 1851, and the war that lead to that event.

No mention of any Miwoks in the whole book.

In doing some research, I discovered some newspaper items submitted that indicate that my third great grandfather Frank S. Clow was accused of murdering a David Patterson in late August or early September of 1877. I read another article that indicated a preliminary examination had been conducted, and he was held to answer and denied bail. This is new information to me, and I am dying to find out what happened!!! Can anyone assist me? I am very much a newbie on this. My husband is listed as the owner of this account, and you can either reply to him or to me at tracytcsr@aol.com. Thanks.

My great aunt, Ruth Haney, died January 19, 1990 in Mariposa. She lived in the town of Mariposa for many years (since at least the mid-1970s).

Is it possible she has an obituary in the local newspaper? (Her married name was Haney; maiden name Simmons)

Thank you for any suggestions.

I found several old newspaper accounts that Cypriano and Chief Bautista of the Miwoks aided James Savage of the Mariposa Battalion.

Those chiefs considered Savage their "white chief". At first I thought that they were Yosemite Miwoks, but it turns out they helped James Savage track down the Chief Tenaya and the Ahwahneechees.

It's true. I have the early newspaper accounts. There were several reporters who wrote during that time the Mariposa Battalion and James Savage was assisted by Cypriano and Chief Bautista.

Susie Sam, wife of Captain Sam was documented to be Paiute.

Captain Sam, full blooded Paiute born at Mono Lake. He lived most of life between Yosemite and Mono Lake and other Paiute areas.

On most of his wife's, Susie Sam, government documentation she is documented as Paiute or Yosemite Indian.

Not all Indians born in Yosemite were Miwok.

On this link it shows that Captain Sam himself states that his wife was a Paiute.

http://thehive.modbee.com/?q=node/372

In 1928 the majority of her grandchildren state that both Susie Sam and Captain are full blooded Paiutes. Now because of recognition many are saying she was Miwok?

Yet Susie died in August 1903, before most of those 'elders' living today knew her. She spent most of her life in and around Yosemite and Mono Lake and not in the lower foothills of the Miwok.

Also Captain Sam had other children besides Leanna and Louisa Sam-Tom. They had Pete, George and Mattie they are documented as Paiute and they lived in Paiute areas till their deaths. Some of their grandchildren intermarried with Washos also not only those on the western side.

The Sam name is Paiute or Mono in that area.
