SEVENTH ANNUAL REUNION OF POTTER VALLEY PIONEERS
(By GRACE SWEENEY)
A delightful picnic and barbecue was enjoyed at McGee grove in POTTER valley on Friday, June 17, when the Pioneer Association of that place held their seventh annual reunion. A large crowd of old friends and neighbors gathered in this beautiful old grove, which has been the seine of so many joyous occasions since the first settlement of the valley in the early fifties.
At noon the tables were set and everyone proceeded to do justice to the barbecue prepared by William Pickle and his assistants. In the afternoon a short program was given, the president of the association, Hale McCowen. Sr., relating a number of interesting inciÂdents of the pioneer families and their homes. Mrs. M. A. Bransford of Santa Rosa, mother of Mrs. E. V. Jones of this place, who resided in the valley in the early seventies and who has now reached the advanced age of 91 years, made the trip from her home on that day to greet relatives and old friends. In a clear voice she told of their trip across the plains in a covered wagon; the hardships and dangers encountered on the way. Other addresses were made by Will Vann of Arbuckle, Sheriff Taylor Day of Lake county, Mrs. Emily Smith, and by Joseph Mclnerny of San Francisco. whose wife, the former Rase Hardin, is a grand daughter of Moses Briggs, one of the first white settlers of the valley. Mrs. Julia Ellis of Santa Rosa read a selection written by Mrs. I. Griffitts in the seventies describing an Easter picnic given in the hills near the valley at that time.
In the evening an old time dance was given at Grange hall, which was enjoyed by all. And so another "Pioneer Day" of POTTER valley has gone into history and each guest departed with a vote of thanks to the committee composed of C. A. Carrier, chairman, Hale McCowen, Chas. Busch, James Eddie, Chas. Hopkins, Owen Busch and Mrs. Emily Neil Smith, who had arranged this affair for them.
The pioneers present on this occasÂion were Mattie Pickle Day, Petaluma; Geo. Vann, Willows; Will Vann, ArÂbuckle; Rebecca Vann Yarbrough. Fallon. Nev.; Chas. Streeter, Tracy; Melvilla Carner Gould, Sacramento; LorÂetta Carner Stout, Vallejo; Julia Melvin Ellis, Mrs. M. A. Bransford, Lee Bransford, Santa Rosa; Belle Briggs Elstun, Elizabeth Briggs Sponagle, Lillian Street Norvelle, San Francisco; Ellen Burris Cook, Princeton; Dolly Vincent Whited, Mart Baker, Willits; Maude Streeter Starr, Oakland; Robert DaÂshiell, Lakeport; Ella Burkhart Day, William Smith, Earl Smith, John CarÂner, Upper Lake; William Pickle, Hugh Blake, Hattie Blake Thornton, Ham Van Nader, Joe McCreary, Hale McCowen.
