Deceased Name: CHESLEY BONESTELL, 98, SPACE ARTIST
Architect and cosmic space artist CHESLEY BONESTELL, a pioneer in imaginative paintings of the vast neighborhoods of outer space, is dead at age 98.
Mr. Bonestell of Carmel, who died in his sleep Wednesday, illustrated science-fiction novels in the 1940s and crafted precision scale drawings based on his imagination and the best scientific information then available.
It was said that Mr. Bonestell provided both the public and science with some of the first images of the solar system. Scientist-writer Carl Sagan said he didn't know what other worlds looked like until he saw Mr. Bonestell's paintings of Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn.
Born in San Francisco in 1888, Mr. Bonestell developed an early interest in astronomy and started doing space illustrations as a boy. His first renderings were lost in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.
His paintings are scattered around the world in private collections and public displays.
Bonestell leaves his wife, and a daughter. He directed that his remains be cremated and scattered at sea.
