Greetings.

I would very much appreciate an obit lookup for:

Petrine GYDESON
age 77
died in Monterey County Oct 21, 1914
Death Certificate 30398

My research goal is to ascertain the whereabouts of her daughter, Dr. May C. E. GYDISON/GYDESON (or married surname) as of Petrine's death in 1914.

Dr. Gydison is to be included in an upcoming exhibit featuring women of Monterey county, and the most recent documented information I have for her is a mention in an 1894 newspaper.

Thanks in advance

He was born about 1894 in Pennsylvania and was living with his sisters in Salinas in 1956 but not listed in his one sister's obituary in 1966. Any help would be appreciated.

Female physician

In connection with a thesis on Norwegian-American female physicians, I have to check out every student with a name that sounds even remotely Norwegian.

I am hoping that someone might be able to establish the origin of one MAY or MARY C. E. GYDISON/GYDESON/GYDESIN for me. She might have been born in Salina(s?), Monterey County, or at least did she live there at one point. She graduated from the (Northwestern University) Woman's Medical College in 1884, and would at this time be at least 21 years of age. She lived and worked in Nebraska for a while after her graduation. She might have lived in Salina too after her graduation. Sometime before 1896 she married a man by the name of PEDERSON, and moved to Norway.

Any info is highly appreciated!
Seeking any information about a prominent Realtor, ARTHUR RYAN of Pacific Grove, CA. I understand Nancy Borba / Barbe married this prominent realtor Ryan. He was the 2nd or 3rd owner of a house at 255 Oceanview Blvd., which is now a B & B. The current owner states, it all depends on whether you think the Parkes of Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals were the 1st or 2nd owners. Mr. Ryan owned the house from 1942 until he was committed to Agnew State Hospital. I was given Arthur as a first name by a niece of Nancy's who visited and stayed at the house on more than one occasion. I'm not sure how death records work, when a person onced lived in Pacific Grove, then goes to Agnew in Milipitas, A or Santa Clara County I believe. Not sure what his death record would state. Thank you for any assistance you could provide.

Ok, I received the obit on Nancy Borba/Barbe Ryan Barkalow and I'm so greatful! Now, not sure where to obtain any additional information on her prior to her marriage. She lived in Pacific Grove from 1937 to 1968. I believe she went by the last name of RYAN thru about 1958 (since her husbands obit from 1970 says he was in Pacific Grove for 12 years). She was the the founder of the Peninsula Realty Company and lived in Pacific Grove for 31 years when she passed away in 1968. Any suggestions on where I can obtain any information on her life? We believe she had no children. I'm also stuck on where she's buried. The funeral home says they have no records and the City & cemetery hasn't replied to my emails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

Relocated to California in 1852, settled in Salinas, married Jane Hatch.

I have a beautiful hand-drawn calligraphed poster biography of William Vanderhurst, approx 28" x 22", entitled "This Early Merchant Was A Whirlwind ~ Our History and Heritage ~ ". It contains a 20-paragraph detailed description of his business experience and accomplishments.

He and his wife had 10 children. If you are a decendant of this family, this document would be a treasure.

My grandmother’s cousin, William Dugay Cruikshank, was a gold miner in the Los Burros Mining District of Monterey County, California. He kept a diary for many, many years before he died in 1937, and one of the things he recorded was when he heard of the death of one of his neighbors or friends. The following dates are in most cases not the date of death but the date that Will heard of the death, unless otherwise noted. The information was extracted by my mother while transcribing the diaries, and they are not in perfect chronological order. I hope that someone some day will find something useful for their research:

First, the good news - two births:

8 Jun 1897 To the Gillis family, a son
11 Dec 1899 “Oda had 11 pound boy born on the 7th [in Jolon]” [Mom’s note: This may have been Oda Dutton.]

The deaths:

9 Jan 1896	Mr. Whittaker died at San Simeon
28 Feb 1896 Mrs. Dutton died on this date
25 Jun 1899 Mr. Phillips died out to Tidbull’s [Jolon] a couple of days ago
Nov 1909 Pete McKenna was found dead in his camp
20 Sep 1899 Heard of the killing of Sheriff Farley today
21 Dec 1898 Mr. Hill [?] died in Jolon three days ago
10 Mar 1910 Rowley died in Jolon a few days ago.
29 May 1910 Old Mrs. Freeman died last night.
19 Mar 1900 Williamson who was prospecting at the Lion’s Den [Mom’s note: Will “rode all night” to try to save this man’s life though they were strangers.

I am trying to clear up a confusing set of entries. Blythe Amy Smith was the child of Oscar and Amy Hunt Smith. She was born 1897 in Los Banos, Merced, California and married a Thomas Hancock who was born in Ireland. Several of Thomas' entries put his date of birth anywhere from 1883 and 1890. Thomas and Blythe appear in the 1920 census with two children: Thomas E. and Betty L. There is a California death index listing for Blythe A. Hancock in 1977, however, in the 1930 census Thomas and his son are enumerated with her parents and he is listed as a widower. Any help would be appreciated. Elizabeth in Florida

He grew up in Pacific Grove, graduating in 1930. His parents and 2 brothers are buried there. I thought maybe his obituary found its way back there. I would appreciate any information. If any more information is needed please let me know. I have tried finding information in Maryland but no such luck.

Charlie

I sure need a RAOGK......Can anyone find me the obit for Allen Arthur Kinney from Pacific Grove, Monterey, California?

Social Security Death Index
Name: Allen Kinney
SSN: 534-03-7110
Last Residence: 93950 Pacific Grove, Monterey, California, United States of America
Born: 4 Oct 1912
Died: 24 Jul 1995
State (Year) SSN issued: Washington (Before 1951 )

California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name: Allen Arthur Kinney
Social Security #: 534037110
Sex: MALE
Birth Date: 14 Oct 1912
Birthplace: Washington
Death Date: 24 Jul 1995
Death Place: Monterey

He was the son of Arthur A. Kinney/Tilla "Tillie" May Hendershot. His mother died in 1932, most likely in Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington where she and 2 of their 3 children were enumerated in 1930 and she's listed as "widowed". But I also think it might be possible that she was divorced instead and that since her son Allen ended up in Calif. maybe one of these 2 could be the father, as I learned from the earlier census records he was b- Bet. 1885 - 1886 Pennsylvania.

Social Security Death Index
Name: Arthur Kinney
SSN: 573-12-7316
Last Residence: 94612 Oakland, Alameda, California, United States of America
Born: 12 Oct 1885
Died: Dec 1969
State (Year) SSN issued: California (Before 1951 )

California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name: Arthur Kinney
Social Security #: 0
Sex: MALE
Birth Date: 21 Jun 1886
Birthplace: Other Country
Death Date: 5 Dec 1951
Death Place: Merced
Father's Surname: Kinney

I am looking for any photos (to copy) of the Grove Laundry Co.from abt. 1915-1930. The business was co-owned at this time by Perry Mauzey and Rudolph Carol Amstein. The laundry business employed many members of the Mauzey. The Mauzey and Amstein families began in the laundry business in Marshfield (now Coos Bay) Oregon and eventually many family members migrated to Northern California (Yreka,Siskiyou & Pacific Grove).
Rudolph Carol Amstein was married to Hattie Hibbard Amstein. Hattie's brother, James B. Hibbard was married to Nina Mauzey Hibbard a first cousin to Perry Mauzey.
R.C. Amstein's son, Hiller Bertram Amstein married Alberta Ina Williams in 1929.
Alberta Williams sister, Ruth Ray Williams married Edgar L. Mauzey, another 1st cousin to Perry Mauzey.
I am putting together a family history of the interconnections of the laundry business and would like some photos to make it more interesting.
Thank you,

Pacific Grove Review, October [day??], 1906
(Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California)

HOME DYNAMITED

Mrs. M. YODER, formerly Mrs. Eleanor FARNSWORTH of Pacific Grove, had a narrow escape from meeting a violent death a few days since at her home in Chehalis, Washington.

Mrs. FARNSWORTH resided here for some time and is well known to all old residents. She was a member of the Fairchild Circle Ladies of the Grand Army during her residence in the Grove. After leaving here some two years ago, Mrs. FARNSWORTH resided in Washington, and about a year ago she was married in that state to Judge M. YODER of Chehalis.

In the discharge of his duties Judge YODER incurred the enmity of one SPITZER. He was attorney against SPITZER in the suit which Mrs. SPITZER instituted against her husband for divorce, and SPITZER attempted to even matters up by placing a charge of dynamite in close proximity to the Yoder home and causing its explosion. Fortunately both the Judge and Mrs. YODER escaped without injury but their house was somewhat damaged by the explosion.

I am trying to learn when and where Gilbert Alderman died. He was born in February 1842 in Brookfield, OH. He moved with his brother to Monterey County between 1860 and 1870. According to family letters, he was living in 1891 in Castroville but had died prior to 1905. He does not appear in the 1900 census anywhere that I can find so I believe he died between 1891 and 1900.

Does Carmel have a local newspaper?

Hi good people. I am an Australian male who is planning a leisurely post-retirement tour of your country next year. Rather than do the usual tourist spots I want to meet and stay with real Americans in their homes, share a few drinks and exchange views etc, and with that in mind I want to write to newspapers of smaller cities all over the country to invite expressions of interest.

I cannot find a local newpaper for Carmel no matter how hard I try. I even tried emailing the local library for help but got no response. Could anybody give me any hints on where to start please?
