John Barton and Easter Benge Barton 1859 Virginia, Placer Co.CA

I'm looking for any descendants of Easter Benge Barton. She and her husband John were living in Virginia, Placer County, California in 1859 according to a letter she wrote to her brother James Almon Benge. She had at least one son, as she mentioned him in her letter dated August 15th 1859. Her son was eleven months old at that time. His name was not given.
Easter had been married previously to Thomas Nelson in Roane County, Tennessee in 1849.
I'd love to locate anyone with knowledge of these folks.

Looking for more on Lindsay Family from 1860 Secret Ravine Census

All right, this one is going to be a whopper. I have been racking my brain with this family for years and have come up with many compelling pieces of a puzzle, but I just cannot manage to put it all together. I thought put what I have out there and offer it to the Ancestry Community in hopes to find some sort of solution. I’ve already posted parts of it individually, trying to figure this out on my own, but here’s everything together and all the information I have on two families with some sort of definite tie…although I can’t concretely prove.

I know the Lindsays spent some time in California. I know that at least one of the children's children was born there, and I think that the mother might have died there. And, as of 1908, two of the girls (I don't know which ones) were still living in California.

First, let me begin with the information I have on my family going back, all concrete. Mary A. (Lindsay) (Bacheler) Smith was my great great great great grandmother. She was born about 1838 somewhere in Canada to parents John Lindsay (according to her death certificate) of Scotland (according to death certificate and census records for her and what appears to be her brothers) and Sarah (UNKNOWN MAIDEN NAME) Lindsay, who was born about 1811 in Ireland (1860 Placer County, California Census).

An interesting account of Mary’s life is given in her obituary 1908:

first passenger trains over the rails,
just laid, of the old Utah & Northern
railway, now the Oregon Short Line.
Mrs. Smith had since lived in this city
and throughout her residence has
made opportunities looking to the best
welfare of those about her. Her life
was an example of Christian sacrifice
and effort. She did a world of
good in many little ways that will
never be known except to those who
were benefited. There are scores who
will never know that it was through
Mrs. Smith's efforts that they were
blessed. Her beautiful character was
one that might well be emulated.
Four children mourn this Christian
woman—W. C. Batchelor, for nine
years cashier of the First National
bank and as many more assistant
postmaster of the Butte office and now
a resident of Seattle. Mrs. Herman
Hauswirth, Miss Rhea Smith and G.
L. Smith, secretary and treasurer of
the Butte Copper company, all of this
city. The late Mrs. Robert Hauswirth
was another daughter. Mrs. Smith Is
also survived by two sisters in California,
and two brothers In Nevada.
The funeral will start at 1:30 o'clock
tomorrow afternoon from the home of
Mrs. H. Hauswirth, 717 West Quartz
street, proceeding to the First Presbyterian
church, where services will be
held.

Now, these dates are most likely estimates, probably given by one of her children (her son Wilbur Bacheler is the informant on her death certificate) and cannot be taken for exact information, but other sources prove it to be relatively accurate. Unfortunately, because of the time frame and the fast moving with which the Lindsays family moved, I cannot find a record I know is them for sure until 1860.

Taking what information I have managed to collect, I can make a rough timeline. The family came to the U.S. between about 1841 and 1843 (years between Jacob and John Lindsay’s births according to 1850 and 1860 censuses, and 1842 is recorded on what could possibly be a later census record for eldest brother David). There is a slim chance that they might be recorded in a very early Canadian census as they were there from at least 1834-1841, but I have come across nothing as of yet, and I don’t know exactly where in Canada they lived (although there was only a small part of the country civilized in the 1830’s-1840’s). Also, because boarder crossing records don’t start until 1895, I can’t find record of their crossing, but it does appear they went directly to Illinois and lived there from about 1843 (just before Joseph’s birth) to about 1850 (just before Alice’s birth in “Mo” [Missouri?]). As of 1850, the family seems to be on the way West.

The family then, doesn’t show up for certain until the 1860 census of Secret Ravine, Placer Co, California. Mary is living with her first husband, Chauncey Darwin Bacheler, her mother, and apparently all but one of her siblings in Secret Ravine, California. Bacheler and the oldest Lindsay boys are listed as miners, which makes sense with local history and information and short biographies I have gathered on C.D. Bacheler.

It appears that the father John Lindsay is gone. I know nothing of this man, except for his name and birth LOCATION, and have never seen him on a record except for Mary A’s death certificate. I believe he might have died just prior to the family coming west in 1850, perhaps before 1848 as I will explain in time.

After this, the Lindsay family unit breaks up. I know that Mary separated with C.D. Bacheler after having two children and remarries to a man named Samuel G. Smith, with whom she is living in Elko County, Nevada, as of 1880. Shortly after that, she came to Butte, Montana, where she lived out the remainder of her life. I have a hard time finding record of the other siblings that I can link for sure, although I have compelling records that might be for brothers David, John and Jacob in Elko Co, Nevada. I have been able to find absolutely nothing on the girls, aside from the fact that two of them are still alive and living in California in 1908. If anyone recognizes any of the Lindsay kids, please let me know. Even mother Sarah Lindsay seems to disappear.

Having come to a dead end, I kept looking and came across an 1850 Census for Weber Co, Utah (after research, it turns out the census was actually taken in 1851 and is sometimes referred to as the 1851 census, which is important in my case), in which it appears the Lindsay kids are all living together, and supplies the following information:

The birth order, approximate years, and odd combination of birth locations makes me certain these are the children. Ca is said to be California by Ancestry’s transcription, but given the time period and the census keeper’s inconsistent abbreviations (what starts out as “Deseret” becomes “Des” halfway through, “Indian Territory” to “Ind. Ter.” And “Canada” to “Can.”) Obviously, they are living with another family, which makes sense in 1851 as they were on their way west. I thought at first, and still consider, that the children were just staying temporarily at the house as they moved to California, to join their parents who were somewhere or another. I searched for John and Sarah perhaps somewhere else in 1860, but had absolutely no luck.

I decided to look into James Graham, to maybe figure out any sort of relationship he could had to the Lindsays. Since his birth date was close to my Sarah Lindsay’s and they both come from Ireland, I thought perhaps they were siblings or cousins or relatives of some sort, explaining why the children would stay with Graham. I have found no proof one way or the other on this theory, but do not discredit it.

I did learn a lot about Graham, however, and it does not appear he had a sister that could be Sarah. Other information includes the following short biography:

Little is known of James ' early life. After his first marriage, they lived in Laurel Hill, Chester, Pennsylvania , where at least six of their 11 children were born. It is not known when they joined the Church, although they may have been living in Hancock County prior to the exodus. Their son, Robert , was baptized in 1841 . They were probably baptized in about 1840 while living in Bear Creek, Hancock, Illinois, a rural town outside Nauvoo . His first wife, Mary Ann , died in Iowa in 1846 enroute to Utah . He married his third wife in Winter Quarters . The family continued on to the Valley. On 9 September 1849 , James married Hannah and her mother, Christiana . He and his family were the first settlers of Riverdale , in Weber County . He and his sons laid claim to all the land between Uintah and Wilson's Lane on the west side of the Weber River . They worked the land for many years. He died there.

I find this “Sarah Thompson” to be very interesting. She was born about the same time as my Sarah (UNKNONW) Lindsay, (according to what must have been on the marriage record, anyhow) in Ireland as well. I don’t know my Sarah’s maiden name, but it could very well have been Thompson. I’ve been in contact with a few different descendants of James Graham’s and his wives, but no one seems to know anything more about this Sarah Thompson aside from her birth and marriage dates.

There are a couple of reasons that I believe Sarah Thompson might be my Sarah Lindsay. James and Sarah reportedly had no children, and it seems odd to me that someone Sarah Thompson’s age wouldn’t have been married at least once before, or have already have children before marrying in 1848.

I’ve done research and found that the other two individuals on the 1850 Weber census, after all of the Grahams and before the Lindseys (John “Jimieson” and Julia Reed), are children and relatives of James’s wives from previous marriages (making them step-children and in-laws). If the Lindseys were perhaps Sarah Thompson’s children from a previous marriage, this would fit right in.

Also, by 1860, when my Sarah Lindsay and her children are seen in California for sure, James Graham had passed away, and his family is seen still living in Weber without him. Most of the children were old enough to be out on their own, but all of the wives EXCEPT Sarah Thompson are still present. The Lindsey kids are nowhere to be seen in the household either because they are in California.

I think that Sarah Thompson might have, before or after James Graham’s death, left to live with her children who were old enough to support her, and maybe went back to the name Lindsay. Or, she might have still been going by Graham and the census taker failed to make the difference in his record. IF, that is, Sarah Thompson and my Sarah Lindsay are one and the same.

The problem is, I can’t find evidence to prove or disprove the theory. I would be happy either way. If someone could help me find out more about my Sarah Lindsay or Sarah Thompson, I would be immensely happy. I would like to see if I can’t see when and where either of them died.

I’ve done some research in the Mormon migration to Utah in the 1850’s. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lindsay’s, even if they aren’t married into James Graham’s family, traveled with the Mormon’s as they went from Illinois to California at the time they were as well.

I’ve looked into land immigration records and can account for James, his two eldest sons, and both of his wives after Sarah Thompson. The problem is, I don’t know when or with what party the rest of the Graham children – those from James and his first wife’s marriage – came across. It was obviously after 1848 (James didn’t leave for Utah with Egan until 1849) and before 1851 (when the Weber Co census was taken), but I cannot find them explicitly. Since James’s first wife died just before he married Sarah Thompson in 1848 and he didn’t get married again until he was in Utah, Sarah Thompson most likely took care of the Graham children, and, I’m sure, traveled with them when they all came to meet their father and two brothers in Utah. If I could find out what party they traveled with, I might be able to find the Lindsey children, if Sarah is indeed Sarah Lindsay. If not, there should still be records of the Lindsays somewhere, as I am positive they traveled with one Mormon party whether or not they had any ties to James Graham.

I’m no novice at genealogy anymore (not an expert, but I’ve had a lot of experience by now), and I have been racking my brain for years now on this family, finding bits here and there that I can’t quite fit together, so I thought I’d give the Ancestry Community a try with ALL of the pieces I have and see if someone can’t help me make a concrete connection. There’s something there, I just know it, but it’s flitting just out of reach.

So, in short, I am trying to find all the information on ANY and ALL of the people mentioned to see if I can’t make the pieces fit together.

Annie Flaherty died Friday, December 4, 1868 in Stockton, California. She was in an asylum for a period of time prior to her death - not sure if for physical or mental illness. Prior to that she lived in the Auburn area, Placer County. She came to USA from Galway, Ireland around 1858 with her sisters Catherine and Mary Ann. Mary A. married Bartley Mullen and Catherine moved to Grass Valley and married Frank Conlin. Annie was buried 9th of December 1868 in the Catholic Cemetery of Stockton.

Can someone help me obtain the obituary for Kevin Lane who passed away on Dec. 31, 1991, please? The Colfax newspaper for the first week of 1992 is missing from the county library in Auburn, so I'm hoping someone else has access to this issue ... or maybe a suggestion for how I can access it myself. It is not at the state library in Sacramento, by the way. Also, the obituary wasn't carried in the "Auburn Journal."

I'm looking for any and all information concerning Mary Williams aka "Kate Carew" who grew up in Placer Co., particularly her siblings, husbands, and progeny.
Here's a thumbnail sketch of what I have concerning Mary...

Mary Williams (pseudonym "Kate Carew") was born 06/27/1869 in Oakland, CA. Daughter of Robert Neil Williams, a mining engineer, and Virginia Gluyas, Mary attended San Francisco School of Design. In 1889 she worked as one of seventeen staff illustrators for the San Francisco Examiner. By 1890 she and her husband Harrie Kellett Chambers had moved to New York where Mary landed a position with Joseph Pulitzer's New York World (The New York Globe) providing illustrated interviews with caricatures of the rich and famous which she signed "Kate Carew."
Kate Carew's caricatures and interviews became so popular, in 1901 Pulitzer sent her to Europe for a series of interviews titled "Kate Carew Abroad." After a divorce, Mary moved to London in 1911 and worked with The Patrician and The Tatler. After the start of World War I, she returned to America and continued working for American newspapers including the New York Tribune.
By the late 1920s, her health and eyesight were fading, and she returned to California to devote herself to fine art. Kate Carew was married three times, to a journalist, a playwright and a British Lord. She died 02/11/1961in Monterey, at the age of 91.

I only have her married twice, to Mr. Chambers, and a John Reed (she also was a painter, and signed her paintings "Mary Reed")

He lived in Georgetown,Ca El Dorado county many years.Collins may had been the son of Jeremiah and Dove Collins of Georgetown,Ca.J.G.Collins died at his own hands about 1930 in Placer California.

He may have been the step father of a boy named Henry C.----- born in Calif 1904 son of Florence Viola ----- born August 8.
Henry C. father last name could had been Shepherd or Soto.

I am looking for info on the death of John Heard SHEPHERD who died in Colfax in 1961. He was born July 15, 1881 in England or Scotland. He is buried in Colfax somewhere, but no one can seem to find his grave or any record of his death. I checked the CA Death index, and they have an incorrect social security # for him. It is for a totally different person. How can that happen? He is buried next to his sister-in-law, Grace, but we don't have a last name for her. Any suggestions?

I am researching my g grandfather Juan de dios Besoain. He was born in Forest Hill, Placer Co., CA, May 1st 1877 to Juan de dios Besoain and Petronella Escobar Besoain (both from Chile). I am wanting to find his birth certificate and death certificate to copy for my grandmother. She is 88 and I am wanting to find this soon. She has been asking about the father she never knew. He mined and our family indicate he worked for some electrical company or telephone company like PGE or something like that. His children were Genevieve, Don, and Catherine. Don was from Ca. My grandmother Catherine Marie (Besoain) Winans moved to Oregon when she was very small and her parents divorced. She was born Dec. 21, 1911. Don was born previously in 1905. He didn't come with the family to live in Oregon.
He was from around the Oakland area I believe though I remember meeting him when he was an older man and he came to visit my grandmother. If any of this sound familiar to you, please write.
PS...Genevieve, the oldest sister died while giving birth to her daughter.
Catherine Marie Besoain Winans was born in Antioch, Contra Costa Co, Ca. That shows Juan must have been there also. I don't have a Co map yet to show where these places are located.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone might be able to help me with some history of Placer county, and/or of Blue Canyon, in particular. My gggg-grandparents, I believe, were there for one census take-in in 1870. James Tate age 52 and his son George age 20 are both listed as Railroad workers. James' wife Ann Jane/Anjean Tate age 50 was also there with them.

I'm trying to figure out what Railroad (if it's one that's well-known anyway) they may have followed out there from Canada, and also what sort of records (if any) may exist for this time period in this area pertaining to the Railroad workers and their families.

Does anyone know where I can find Prison records? Court Records?
In 1923 James McCrary age 50 was wanted by authorities (Sherrif Elmer GUNN (GUM?)) in Colfax for attempted murder. He shot R. M. CROOKS, after Crooks broke up his home.
He was captured at 19Th Street and Broadway in Oakland California by the captain of detectives Richard V. Mc Sarely.
My James (Edward G.) McCrary b. about 1775, was in San Fransisco in 1920 and was in Oakland by 1933. We have lost him for from 1920-1932 and I am wondering if he may have been in Jail. He doesn't appear in the 1930 census, at least that I could find?

Need info about Fayette Fuller, Albarnas or Alvinus Fuller, Joanna Barnes, and/or Jeduthan Barnes. They are all listed on the same gravestone in Michigan. What is the connection between the Barnes and the Fullers? ANY info would be greatly appreciated. I have more info about Joanna Barnes and her husband and children if you are interested.

According to the gravestone, Fayette died in “Virginia California.” I’m not sure if that is what is now Virginia Colony in Ventura Co. or Virginiatown in Placer Co. The stone also implies Fayette was born around January 1825, location unknown. I don’t know if Fayette was male or female.

The stone is at Mooreville Cemetery in York Twp. (near Milan), Washtenaw Co. MI. It is near the borders of 2 other MI counties: Monroe and Lenawee. The following is a transcript of the gravestone:

Looking for the burial place of Lula Mae Easley who died 15 Nov 1947 in Roseville, Placer County, California. She is buried somewhere in Placer or San Joaquin Counties. I am sorry I can't be more specific....What I can tell you about her is that she was my mother's first cousin who was murdered by Charles Edward Thomasson in November of 1947, her body was discovered in a field just outside of Roseville, California by a farmer. The August 1948 issue of "Inside Detective Magazine", has the story of her disappearance and murder. There was no mention of or if she was buried in Northern California. This is probably a long shot.

Ella was my Great-Grandmother and I cannot figure out why she moved to the Colfax area. She was married to Ernest Hays as he was still alive living in Woodland, Yolo County, CA when she died. She was living with her son Mervel (my Grandfather whom I've never met) when she died.
I found her obituary in the Woodland Daily Democrat.

Why did she live there?

Auburn resident Victoria Lee Gustafson died in her home May 29, 2001. She was 40.

Ms. Gustafson was born Nov. 7, 1960 in Chicago, Ill. A resident of Placer County for the past 7 years, Gustafson was a graduate student in social work at California State University, Sacramento. Ms. Gustafson also worked with drama students at Golden Sierra High School.

Survivors include her life partner Paul Chollet; step-son Andrew Holmes; mother Joanna Woods; sisters Cynthia Cardoza, Jacquelin Nelson, Keli Ugalde and Jamie Fortenberry; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 11, in the Church of the Nazarene,3885 Richardson Drive in Auburn.

I am unsure if the Stanley is her husband but he was only one that died in Placer Co.

Orillis Francis Rush and Grace Gennieve Runyon are my great grandparents. According to 1920 census Grace was born 1887 in North Dakota. Father was listed as born in Kentucky, mother in Iowa. Her mothers maiden surname might be Bradspri. She married Orillis Rush at an unknown date and travelled west to Washington, Oregon, California. They had children in Ferry Washington 1915, Oregon 1920, California 1925, Oregon 1930. Orillis died 1932 in Oregon. Grace Died 1963 in Nevada, CA. They have many descendants so if we can make a link there might be many unknown relatives.

Am seeking information about John C. Coleman, who served in mines around Iowa Hill between 1854 and 1865. Biographical information says that he was "in charge of the Hazel Green Mine", but in information Ive seen about the Iowa Hill area, theres no mention of a Hazel Green Mine. Can anyone help?

He was married to Mary Lucretia Bush on June 23, 1858. The biographical information indicates that the marriage took place in Toronto, but I can find no record of it in the Ontario records. I now think it may have taken place in Placer County and would be most grateful for any information that would confirm or refute this.

The information Im seeking is for a biography, so Im trying to be accurate. Sources would be appreciated.

Doing historical research in Placer County for the Colfax Area Historical Society.
I am interested in Lisbon Applegate who lived in the area now called Applegate from 1849-1854. My understanding is that he came from Missouri with his son George, who stayed and raised fruit orchards here. Lisbon was a Judge and a surveyor and the site was called "Lisbon" for a while. His younger brothers were in Oregon since 1843.
Would appreciate information on this pioneer. Any descendants out there?

Is anyone researching this family? Richard (born about 1834 in England) and Laviana (MCCANNELL) MAY ( born about 1848 in England). They immigrated to Colfax, USA sometime prior to 1865 and lived there for, at least 40 years. Richard was a miner.

At least three children were born to the couple Addie J. ( Aug 1865), William Henry (21 April 1866) and Charles Edward (22 March 1868), all in CA.

In the 1910 US Census for Placer Co. Laviana (age 62) is found living with Hannah MCCANNELL, her mother ( age 89). It is possible that Richard, Laviana's husband, is living in Wasco, Oregon with his daughter and her husband.

Does anyone know were excactly as the Stegeman Resteraunt on Grasse Valley RD. in Colfax. I believe it sat on the corner of Grasse Valey and an Alley.
Also where is /was the place called the Round House? Or was that part of the railroad?
