Solon Abbott was the sheriff in Sacramento County at sometime in the 1850s. He was born in Vermont in 1832. I need to find any and all info on his time there. He also belonged to the Veigilance Committee in San Francisco. Can anyone help me verify what he did while living there? Please help me find info about him or tell me where the info might be. I am searching for information about Samuel Hoagland, born approx. 1803 in PA, who was living in 1856 in Marysville, Yuba Co. (Source: Marysville City Directory) and later Sacramento County (Source: 1860 federal census). He married Amelia Raymond in 1857 in Yuba County. I have no death info for Samuel or divorce record but Amelia married again in 1862. I would like to learn more about Samuel and the identity of the female "M. Hoagland" living in his 1860 census household. I have been unsuccessful in locating Samuel in other federal censuses. Thank you!

1930-1939 gap in Sacramento death record indexes; also Sacramento Hospital

Is there a death index for Sacramento for the above years? The California death index starts in 1940. The family history indexes are before 1930.
Edward Monroe Ivory was a registered voter residing in the "Sacramento Hospital" in 1934 at age 81. I can find no clue to his death date.
Even if someone could just tell me the location of this hospital, I might be able to figure out where he was buried.

I want to find out about my great great grandfathers brother Dan Radigan who was born in Co. Roscommon, Ireland and died in Sacramento, California, I believe, on 9th December, 1933. He never married. I believe I have found him on the 1930 census.

How would I go about getting a copy of his death certificate in order to learn more about him, and who was notified of his death? I'd also like to know where he was buried.

Before I pay for a copy of a 1857 Sacramento County marriage record from the County Recorder's Office -- can someone who has already obtained such a record described what type of information is provided in it? Will I learn bondsmans' names? Witnesses? Or will I obtain merely a copy of the registry entry in the marriage book with the marriage date and names of the bride and groom and person who performed the marriage? I'm grateful for advice! They had 14 children: George, Elizabeth, Frank, James, William, Peter, Samuel, Matilda, Robert, Albert, Joseph, Patterson, Mary and Kathleen. Several of the children settled in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where their mother died in 1952. George, Frank, Peter and Patterson ended up in the Sacramento, California area. I'm especially interested in any CORDANOs who had recently immigrated from Favale di Malvaro, the hometown of my great grandparents, Maria BOITANO BOITANO & Luigi BOITANO.
My grandmother, Mary Rose "Mamie" BOITANO, was the first American-born child in her line of the BOITANO family. She was born in Sacramento 30 Dec 1889 and baptized in June 1890. Sponsors are listed as J. CORDANO & R. BOITANO
I do not know of an R. BOITANO there at the time and have no idea who the J CORDANO might be. Any help would be appreciated. Was there one Italian parish at the time? How does one get access to old Catholic records?

He was married to Helen Bradley and the Preliminary Dissolution was Sept 1975 in County #34. She took her maiden name of Tyrrell back(was adopted by (BRADLEY) State File # 118735 and Case # 710031.
They were married in 1957 but place Unknown.
I live in Michigan so I am not sure what area you cover in Sacramento,Sacramento CA.

Thomas McCartney 1809-1861 biography
Thomas McCartney was born about 1809 in Ohio, probably in Springfield, Clark County. He was one of 12 children of judge, farmer, miller and land speculator William C. McCartney and his wife Margery.

On 2 Apr 1811, William McCartney, Sr., a miller, is elected as an Overseer of the Poor for the Springfield, Ohio, area. And in 1814, William was the largest donor toward the building of a 40x30' meeting house for the Methodist Episcopal Church in Springfield, Clark, Ohio.

In the 1830 census, the William C. McCartney family lives in Union, Logan, Ohio, near West Liberty, where William McCartney is again a miller.

On 23 May 1830, Thomas McCartney married Christena Newell in Logan Co., Ohio. They were married by Jeremiah Fuson. Christena, born about 1811 in Ohio, was likely the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Shields) Newell of Logan Co., Ohio.

Shortly after his marriage, Thomas moved with his parents and most of his siblings to the South Bend, St. Joseph, Ind., area where all of his known children were born.

Thomas’ son William W. McCartney was born in Indiana about 1831. His daughter Amanda M. McCartney was born there about 1835 and his daughter Josephine A. McCartney was born there about 1838. In 1840, the Thomas McCartney family lived in LaPorte County, Ind. The family owned land in LaPorte, Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

On 13 Jan 1845, Thomas McCartney, his father William C. McCartney and his brother in law Elisha Egbert were among the incorporators of the Philadelphia Industrial Association in South Bend. This was a socialist collective, inspired by Francois Marie Charles Fourier, which sought to improve society through education and collective labor. The association, which was based on William C. McCartney’s land, failed.

In late February or early March of 1849, it appears that Thomas left South Bend for the California gold fields with his brothers James and Benjamin. Indications are that James returned to South Bend fairly quickly and resumed farming. Benjamin seems to have done well in California and apparently returned to South Bend in late 1852 or early 1853, after the death of their father on 30 Jul 1852.

On the census of 10 Sep 1850, Thomas’ wife and three children live in German township, St. Joseph, Ind., just north of South Bend. While it was reported by the census that Thomas was in the household. It seems likely he was actually in California. Also listed in his household were Lewis Barr, age 19, born in Pennsylvania and Wm. H. Ward , age 22, born in Ohio. These men are both listed as farmers and are likely farm hands left to fill in for Thomas.

On 18 Nov 1850, Thomas appears on the census in Placerville and Vicinity, El Dorado, Calif., listed as a miner for gold with a reported real estate holding of $8,000.

On 12 May 1852, Thomas was living near Sacramento, Calif., when he gave a Power of Attorney to William Miller of St. Joseph Co., Ind. This could be the result of the death of his wife Christena, as there would have been no one in Indiana to direct his financial affairs.

On 20 Jul 1860, Thomas is living in household 1027 as a farmer in Michigan Bar, Cosumnes, Sacramento, Calif. Michigan Bar was a gold rush town about 25 miles east-southeast of Sacramento along the Cosumnes River. The Michigan Bar post office was established in 1855 and discontinued in 1935. As a town, it no longer exists; however a historical marker is located there.

Living with him are his son William McCartney and a farm laborer, Louis Barr, 28. Louis seems likely to be the same farm hand that worked for the family in South Bend in 1850, though his reported place of birth has changed from Pennsylvania to Ohio.

Based on marriage records from Sacramento, it appears that Thomas’ daughter Josephine McCartney also moved west and married a Frank Bailey, who was born about 1830 in Maryland. The couple lives near to Thomas in household 777, Michigan Bar, Cosumnes, Sacramento, Calif., and has a daughter named Emma Bailey, born 1859 in California.

Living with Frank and Josephine Bailey is B.F. [Benjamin Franklin] McCartney, the son of Thomas’ brother Nathaniel McCartney and his wife Abigail M (Parker) McCartney. Nathaniel, also a miller, had died of consumption/TB on 7 Jun 1856 in Scio, Linn, Ore., and his widow had moved to Chico Twp, Butte, Calif., perhaps to be near Thomas.

On 18 Jun 1860, the widow Abigail is living in household 189, Chico, Butte, Calif. Benjamin is also listed as living in her household along with his siblings, a double count.

It appears that Thomas McCartney died near Sacramento, Calif., of consumption/TB about 1861. There is no further record of his son William W. McCartney, or his daughters Amanda M McCartney and Josephine (McCartney) Bailey. No solid record has been found of his granddaughter Emma Bailey.

Benjamin Franklin McCartney is last mentioned in his mother’s probate notice, which was filed on 31 Mar 1864.

The answer to what happened to some of them may be in the probate archives of St. Joseph Co., Ind., as it would have been necessary for the county to arrange for the proper disposal of Thomas McCartney’s assets.

Sarah Magoon Hartt (or Hart, Burnham or Brackinridge)

Hello. I really need help trying to find information on the last few years of my 3X G. Grandmother, Sarah Magoon. She left a very difficult trail of clues to follow, because apparently she was predisposed to lying. This is what we do know:
-Born around 1800 in Highland County, Ohio to Alexander and Sarah Magoon
-Married John Vinsonhaler 1820 in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio
-Gave birth to James Cramer Vinsonhaler 1821, probably in Ohio.
-Divorced John Vinsonhaler in the mid-1820's, left both husband and son. John remarried, moved new wife and son James Cramer to Iowa, then to Smith Center Kansas.
At this point, we are not sure where Sarah went. In letters to her family in the 1860s, she claimed to have lived in New Orleans, New York, and Washington DC. She claimed to have been a doctor but this was probably untrue. She claimed in an 1867 application for her deceased son' military pension, that she married a Joel Hiram Hartt in the mid-1830's, and in 1843 he was lost at sea, while she was pregnant with his son. In letters to the family, she also said she had been married to a Burnham and a Brackenridge. We cannot find a record of any of the marriages, nor of the ship that he supposedly was "lost at sea" on: the Esmeralda, which she claimed sailed from Rio to New Orleans. Said son was born, named Charles Hiram Hartt. We cannot find a birth record for him, and we can't find him on any census with Sarah Hart. We are beginning to wonder if he was even her son, or if he was someone she met and maybe knew that he had no family, and when he died she opportunistically claimed his pension. He later died in the Civil War in 1865 in North Carolina, and she applied for his pension, stating that he had no other family and she had no means of survival other than his military pension. She was living in St. Louis Missouri when she first applied for this pension. She later transferred it (in 1879) to Sacramento, California, where she was living on 10th and K Street. She is in the 1880 Sacramento Census, living in a boarding house operated by Lottie Ten Eycke, in the neighborhood of 8th to 10th and K streets, and she was listed as "Sarah Hart".
Her brother Hiram King Magoon lived in Mariposa County, California at Magoon Ranch. HIs son, S.E. Magoon, and Samuel E.'s spouse, Sarah, lived there in the 1880's. Her ex brother-in-law's son, James C. Vinsonhaler, was in charge of a San Jose Business College in the 1870's and 1880's, and lived in San Jose.
I know this is long, but we would sure appreciate any help in finding Sarah Magoon Vinsonhaler (or maybe Hartt, Burnham or Brackenridge). We think she probably died in Sacramento in the 1880's and was buried in a Potter's Field or similar-type cemetery.

In 1854 Euphemia Drake Bailey Holcraft made the trip over the plains to California. She is in Sacramento City in 1858 and then onto Folsom in August of 1860. Euphemia had several children: George Holcraft, Louisa Holcraft, Mary Holcraft and Mary Bailey, possibly more. I find her in the 1850 census in Wabash Co., Indiana with the surname of Holcraft, but can not find her in 1860 in California. I know she is there as she wrote to relatives in Wisconsin in August of 1860. Living with her at that time was her daughter, Mary (Bailey). She wrote that she had divorced her husband Harvey Holcraft and went back to carrying the last name of Bailey (first married name). Trying to find out where she and her children went. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Possible names for Euphemia: Euphama, Euphema, Fanny.

I was able to find a George Holcraft and a Mary Bailey in the 1860 census, both were in homes of others (as stated in Euphemia's letters), but no sign of Euphemia.

Later in life engaged as a druggist's clerk, till twenty-one years of age, when he commenced the manufacture of buck gloves, whips, and so forth, on his own account. In 1849 came to California, engaged in the mines of Stanislaus, Calaveras, and Nevada counties. During the year 1852, he removed to Sacramento city, and began the business of merchandising, by dealing in fruits, seed, produce and the like. Married first time at Rochester, where his wife died. In 1854, Wm. Strong married Mrs. Jane Martin, a native of New Jersey. They have two children. A view of his residence is given elsewhere. Post Office, Sacramento.

Thomas Jefferson SHADDEN took up a land grant in Yolo Co. following his arrival in 1843 near Sutter's Fort in a wagon train with his wife, Martha SUMNER SHADDEN, and their four surviving children born in Arkansas. The SUMNER family had been in Mississippi, and Thomas J. SHADDEN was from Pulaski,
Tennessee. Eliza Jane SHADDEN was born near Sutter's Fort in 1843. A son, Samuel, was born there but died within a year. Thomas J. was a mule trader. His daughter, Drucilla, married John HAMES in CA. John and Drucilla HAMES helped found Soquel, CA. A SUMNER gal was married to George DAVIS by Sutter. In 1850, Thomas J. and Martha had earned enough gold dust to go by boat to Oregon. The SHADDENs helped found McMinnville, Yamhill Co., Oregon. In 1880 George DAVIS was listed in Yamhill Co. SHADDEN ancestors are buried in the McMinnville Masonic Cemetery. I am searching for all Thomas J. SHADDEN descendants -- and I have found many. Thomas J. SHADDEN was a descendant of James SHEDDAN who came to America in the 1700's from Ayrshire, Scotland.

I'm on the East Coast so finding this obit in person is not possible. I've tried hunting with the search engines but haven't found anything.

I know that Ruth E. Tremblay was b. 6 Jan 1912 and was the daughter of Williamson Jones and Carrie Mabel Lyons. Ruth was born on Staten Island, NY but later moved to CA with her parents and brother.

I don't know who her husband was nor if there were any children/grandchildren. I have been told that Ruth was in the ministry as were her father and brother so I really had expected to find something on the search engines.

"George Henry Benadom - Services for George Henry Benadom, 72, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Mission Chapel of Andrews & Greilich, 3939 Fruitridge Road. Mr. Benadom - a native Californian - died Friday, May 9. He was employed as an operating engineer by various firms fore 35 years. He was a member of SIRS and Operating Engineers Local No. 3. He was a 16-year resident of Sacramento. Mr. Benadom was the husband of Eleanor May Benadom, father of David W. Benadom of Mills Crossing, Francine Davies and Brian Benadom, both of Sacramento, and the grandfather of Sarah Davies. He was the brother of Herbert Benadom of Reno, Vesta Benadom of Meadow Vista, Bernard and Earl Benadom, both of King City."

Seeking descendants of and information on Meta (GARRETT) WILSON, daughter of Herman (Hiram) Garrett. Her mother died when she was 6 months old. Her father was living in
Sacramento Co, when his daughter Meta was born. That is also where Herman met and married his second wife, Lucy Bohanon and moved to Texas. Meta remained in California and married a Wilson. She died in the 1918 flu epidemic.

I am looking for information on Robert ORDINARIO born April 16, 1949 in Sacramento, CA and died September 3, 1978. I think he may have died in Ohio but he is buried in West Virginia.
His mother was Nancy Workman from West Virginia. I'm trying to find out who his father was.
I found his birth record but I need to know where to write to get the document.
Robert served in the US Navy during Vietnam. I'm almost positive his mother is the daughter of my great-great uncle.
Any information or leads that may help me link him to my family would be deeply apprecitaed.
