Thank you so much for your response. You have provided me with much new information, especially about William Clark.

My gggrandparents, Richmond Allen and Sarah Mary Clark, moved to Decatur County from Jefferson Co., GA in 1850 and settled in the Tired Creek area. Even though Richmond Allen owned property and a few slaves in Jefferson County, I have found no record of land purchase in Decatur Co.
They were related to the Whighams and perhaps settled on Whigham family land but I can find no record to support that.

I have wondered if Sarah Mary (Clark)Allen was related to the John and William Clark families who are listed in the 1850 Decatur County census and who also lived in the Tired Creek area. I did not know if the Clark families had migrated from the Jefferson/Pulaski counties earlier.

Thank you again.

I found the name William Clark several times when researching the Tired Creek Road area of the hawthorne settlement in Decatur County. He lived next door to the Hawthorns and I believe he came from Pulaski County GA. Clarks still live in the area. At my tree "Southwest Georgia Taylors - Working through early 1800's" see the Hannah Hawthorne page for the story "Tired Creek Road Taylors". Also he is in the census of 1840's and beyond.
Can anyone assist with the following families? All help, aid, and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Decatur County
Decatur County, Georgia was formed on December 8, 1823. Land in Early County was distributed through the lottery of 1820. A part of Decatur County was set off to Thomas County in 1825, a part to Grady County 1905, and a part to Seminole County in 1920.

Mitchell County
On November 17, 1857 a bill was introduced by Senator C. H. Hammond from Baker County, Georgia, which called for the creation of a new county. The Act, providing for the formation of the new county site from portions of Baker County, was assented to on December 21, 1857. Hence, Mitchell County, Georgia began.

Ancestry
Henry Calloway Holt, very little is known of him before he showed up in the marriage records in Decatur County, GA. He married Martha Blanset or Smatha Peral Blanset. They had approx 4 children: James Henry Holt; Ellen E. Holt; William Harvey Holt; and Lewis Harmon Holt. There are several outstanding questions that have not been resolved. Was Henry Calloway Holt related to the VA Holts who settled in North and Central GA. Was he related to Dr Fowler Holt or Lewis Holt or Willis Holt? Was his wife's name Blanset; Blanchet; or Blanchard? Was he dead before the 1860 Census? Since, he is not listed.

Dr Fowler Holt, we know that his parents were Thaddeus and Martha Goode Holt. We know that he married Martha A. P. Compton 11 Sep 1834 in Decatur County, GA. He was shown in the Census of 1840 as being between 40 - 50 years old. Dr Fowler and Martha Holt had six children: Marie Goode Holt; Julia Frances Holt; Albert P. Holt; Eugenia Caroline Holt; Iverson Fowler Holt; and Mary Chandler Holt. He died in Perry, Houston County, GA.

Very little is known about the next three in this venture:

Lewis Holt,
Shown in the 1850 Census with a wife and four children. Was he related to any of these Holts? What happen to him not in the 1860 Census?

Mary Jane Holt,
She married A. E. Rachels in Decatur County in 1874. Is she the dau of any of these Holts?

Willis Holt,
Even tho I cannot find Willlis Holt in any Census records or find any marriage of him in Decatur County, he was there during the time frame that this blog is covering. Therefore feel that it is important to include him in this research. Willis and his wife Elizabeth had thirteen children. It seems that this family continued on to Gadsden County, FL.

Census:

1840 Census of Decatur County, GA
22 29 Holt Fowler

Males:
1 – to 5yrs
1 – 40-50
Females:
1 – to 5yrs
1 – 10 – 15
1 – 16 – 20

1850 Census of Decatur County, GA p.73A
LN HN FN LAST NAME FIRST NAME AGE SEX RACE OCCUP.
My dad was John Hoyt Bryant, your dad's younger brother. The picture of the man sitting and the woman standing behind them is a picture of Fannie Elizabeth Bryant Bates Collins and W. Groover Collins. She was married before and had a daughter, Edna Bernice Bates. - Willis Hoyt Bryant is correct. I have all the info on his children by Margaret Holt. I have not put all this in the computer, since I just got started and I am trying to varify some of my information. No, I do not live in Decatur County, but visit frequently. My brothers and sisters that are still living, live there. We have a Bryant Reunion in Attapulgus, GA every 4th Sunday in July. I would love to add you and family to the list. I send out invites every year. I hope I have answered all your questions. My e-mail is B_Bryant@bellsouth.net. Hope to hear from you soon.

You can go and see some of the info I have at http://debdoo.tribalpages.com - type in the access code - bonedigger. This is not all I have, it is just where I uploaded some of my info just in case my computer crashed. I have not went through and checked for errors, and I am sure there are mistakes. But I have a starting point should I lose what I do have on my computer. I don't think you will be able to see the people that are still living on the web site so I will send that to you if you send me your email address. I only have a couple of pictures of Thomas Watson Bryant and actually none of his children by his first wife. I do however remember Willis Hoyt which I now wonder if the middle name was Holt like his mothers maiden name. Actually Thomas Watson Bryant and Beulah (2nd wife)were my grandparents and they adopted me. (Who was your dad?) Do you still live in Decatur Co, GA? Hope to hear back from you soon. Would love to share info with you!

I am trying to find connections (if any) to other Bell families in the Decatur County at that time.

Who were the parents of WH Bell and where did they live before moving to Decatur County?

For all of you in this thread. We also are descendants from James B. and Martha. I have at least the info posted in this thread for the most part and I have the school report written by their ggrandson on the family 'legend' of how James B. died at his farm. Have some info on military but is sparse. I haven't worked on this line for some time though it appears that the middle name Barneswell appeared during that time. Am interested in where this came from plus any other discoveries that have been made.

As far as I know, no one has been able to go past James B and Martha.

Sorry its taken so long. I contaced my cousin, Emma Dell Harrison. Her father and mother are both connected to the Bryants. They also lived very close to the Samuel Hadley Harrison homestead. Dell asked her mom and Mrs. Harrison said that Elizabeth is definitely a Bryant. The family says that the marriage may have been secret or there was an error at the courthouse. They feel like the latter was the reason for the different surname. I noticed some error with the oldest child's birthdate and thier marriage date so that could be a reason. I have looked for her on the 1850 and 1860 censuses also. I like to connect the dots. The only thing that can be done is to search those censuses one by one. I noticed that the family resided in Concord so that would include Gadsen Co., Fl also. George and Delilah came from large families so she may be with some of their siblings. Elizabeth doesn't have any older siblings that were married so she couldn't be with them. I've never discovered a middle name for her. I will ask Dell to ask her mom. We'll just have to keep looking....Wanda

Do you know of a middle name for her or where she could have been in those years? These censuses are listed under George Bryant and G Bryant, respectively. Thanks for your input.
Judy I show Emily and Thomas married April 5,1860 in Decatur book A331. Louise and Wiley were suppose to be her children by the Glover she was married to before 1850. J. W. Glover I believe it was. Since Wiley changed in the census from Ford to Glover not sure if He was J.W.Glover's son.
She was only married to Thomas about 10 years before both of them had died. The marriage to Glover was before 1850 (1847-49) until about 1860. If she was born c1820 per census she would have been about 42 when Henry was born. I understood that Margaret and Wiley moved around the Everglades in Florida. (per Uncle Jeneral). I know Charlotte Ford who married John Griner was kin to Richmond Howel's wife Martha Ford but am missing most of the Ford information.
Yes I recognized your sign on right away. I have not done much research in several years now.

I hadn't researched Emily Glover - I'm sure you are right. And as far as her date of death when Henry J. Griner was a boy - I don't have his exact age when she died -- but he could have been as old as 8 - 10; allowed for her death after the 1870 census. I was aware of the Charoltte Ford John Griner marriage - so you think that Henry Jefferson's (b 1862) parents were Louisa M Glover and Thomas Griner (without the M.) AND, are you "my" Marie from the Tampa area??? I hope so; would dearly love to be back in touch; i'm Tom and Maggie Griner's grandaughter.

Judy, do you have the 1850 census on Decatur County #650 was Emily born c 1820 (I show) She had Margaret Ford c1842 Daniel Ford c1844, Wiley Ford c1849 (note he later changed to Wiley Glover) I show Louisa M. Glover born c1854 married Thomas M. Griner c1850 Book B187 Jan. 7, 1875 Decatur, Ga. I show Emily C1820 married Thomas Griner and of course, Henry Jefferson born Oct. 22,1862. She may have been a Ford? Emily married J. W. Glover born 1805 South Carolina c1847-1849 I have seen the marriage record printed but can't locate now.(probably Decatur or Mitchell. The Glover listed in census was Louisa M. Glover c 1854 and it listed Wiley (ford) as Glover in 1860 census. I show J. W. Glover with Jesse G c 1812, Drury c 1800 and John cJanuary 1820 died April 21, 1896 md Nancy. I was told that the Ford children were kin to Charlotte Ford that married John Griner.
William McLeur Palmer was born in 1815 in Sydney, his parents died when he was just four.
As the minimum age for entry into the Male rphanage was seven years, John Cullen a publican who lived i n george Street where William's parents lived cared for him until he was entered the orphan school in 1823. In 1826 he took up a carpentary apprenticeship with Berry Wollstonecraft, where he remained until 18 Dec 1831.
There is quite alot about him in a bok called Palmers- Men of the Southern seas written by Tony Hanning. It was published in January by Jubilee Enterprises Ltd. I got it from Ruth and Lance Shaw
Fiordland Ecology Holidays &
45 South Bookshop
PO Box 40
Manapouri 9643
Southland
New Zealand
Ph: +64 3 249 6600

I have some other bits and pieces as well if you want to know more.
Best regards
Claire
sra@paradise.net.nz
Very glad to hear from you and am most interested in the Civil War era Griners in Georgia. Specifically, the father of Henry Jackson Griner (1862-1936) who never knew his father who died during the Civil War. He barely remembered his mother who died in 1868/9.(He was age 7 at the time) Henry Jackson Griner was taken in by an uncle. We believe his mother may have been married to a Glover at one time.
Have you any data? Cordually, Judy

John C. Griner had a lot of children. I would be happy to send you the children's names. These Griners came from Europe, settled in Purysburg, SC. The settlement failed. The two brothers from Germany moved across the Savanna
River and settled with the GA Saltzburgers. All of these south GA Griners are related from the two brothers who came to SC in the 1740s. I have a lot of history of these Griners. The C. as the middle initial is most likly Casper one of the two brothers middle name. The other brother's middle name was Martin. Both had John as their first name.
They were in Effingham Co. GA first but did move north to the second settlement of the Salzburgers which was located in the area of what is now Burke/Screven Co. GA

Jane Hester Kelly (or Kelley)

Jane Hester b 1835 Ga to William and Mary Hester. 1850 census in Baker Co. Ga. She married Henry H Cook abt 1853. 2 children Catherine 1854 & Henry C 1856. Her husband Henry died abt 1858. She is living with William and Susan Dees in 1860 Miller Co. Ga. census. (Susan is her sister). Info given to me is that William and Susan petitioned for custody of the children. Sketch family records indicate she married a William Kelly abt 1862-3. William supposedly left her before she gave birth to twin boys Daniel and Isaac (Ira) Kelly Dec 25 1863 in Bainbridge. William supposedly returned to a family in Baker Co. I found Jane and the boys in Decatur Co 1880 census. She is living next to another sister Sarah Hester Cherry. I can't find any other data on Jane. Daniel is my great grandfather. Does anyone have further info on Jane, or other info on William Kelly?
There is circumstantial data that William was born 1821 in Pulaski Co. Ga., married Mariah Cook who died in 1861. I do find the same William Kelly family in later census records in Baker County.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Do the names of sisters, Laura Gainer who was married to Samuel Gainer mean anything to you? or Alice Byrd who married a Marsh. They were sisters; Sue was another sister who married a Baxter. Do you know who Viney was? I think that Viney was the nickname for Lavinia Byrd. I found some information on Martin Martin as a boarder in the household of my great grandfather on the 1880 census of Jackson County. Please email me at jeanniepappas@yahoo.com.
