Thank you for your reply. I have all the information you gave. Cynthia's daughter, Esther, married Charles Dumbreck Robertson's half brother, Andrew Umphray Robertson. Esther and Andrew had a son, William Hillman Robertson, my paternal grandfather. The "7" in the age bracket for Esther Bosworth Hillman is also a misprint or not a seven at all(compared with other 7s on the census). Esther's birthday was April 10, 1859. It's probably a "1". I will check the Hillsdale County census...another lead, thank you.

An ancestry.com user public tree named the RW Shinnick family tree has a photo purported to be Cynthia Ann and reports that she was born 21 May 1836 in Chautauqua County New York. This tree uses the same 1850 census that I mentioned in my previous response but has her employed as a teacher and living in Hillsdale County Michigan for the 1860 census. It reports that her father Rueben died in 1853 in Janesville Wisconsin. It has her married in 1867 to Charles Dumbreck Robertson in Erie County Ohio.

I was able to find William W. Hilman age 33 b. NY and Cynthia Hilman age 25 b. NY and their 7 year old child named Esther A. born Wisconsin but labeled as male.
I was unable to find Cynthia, Reuben or Fanny in the ancestry index to the 1860 census for Boone Co., IL. I was able to locate that family group in the 1850 Census in Belvidere and Cynthia is the same age and has the same birthplace as the one 10 years later with Mr. Hillman. I think you are looking for a marriage date around 1853.

I found her later the same year with William Hillman in Crystal Lake Wisconsin with a child, my great grandmother. There may be a record there or close of their marriage.

I can give you information on Charity and her two marriages which resulted in two families--the Vanderwalkers and the CAmpbells. Her daughter Emma (Emily)Vanderwalker married James Clark and they moved to Roxbury, Kansas, in the 1890s. So far, I have not uncovered a paper trail for Charity's parents. Your belief that Mary Wakefield might be a Murphy sounds very promising. I am glad to share anything I have or find.

Sounds like we're on the same track! The first reference I have for Charity by name is the 1850 census:

Belvidere, Boone Co., IL
Polly Wakefield, 64, NY
Mary A., 37, NY
Abnor, 20, farmer, MI
Charity, 17, MI
Ziel, 16, MI
Eleanor, 13, MI
Leonard, 11, IL
Schuyler, 7, IL
Nancy, 6, IL
Daniel, 3, IL

I believe the oldest woman is Polly (Ide) Wakefield, mother-in-law of Mary. I don't have any "proof" of who Mary's husband was, but from what I've been able to piece together I think he was Bazaleel (Jr.) -- his father had the same name, which I've seen spelled numerous ways.

I believe Mary's surname was Murphy and that she was the sister of Bazaleel Jr's brother Abner's wife Sarah. I know Sarah was a Murphy. And, actually, I'm a Murphy too, descended from Sarah's brother John. I'm not actually related to the Wakefields, but I've researched them extensively trying to piece together my Murphys. I've never been able to find a Wakefield tree, so I've collected all the data I can find from census records, etc. & tried to match everybody up. Since there's a number of Abners, Ziels, Pollys, etc., it's been quite the puzzle! Are you able to do a gedcom file? I'd be happy to send my tree as long as you understand that it's more "notes" than fact.

Dear Alex,
Thanks for that. Yes it is the same family and Porter Dennes did have a brother Martin, also James Winerals and maybe a couple of others. Strangely I have just sent for the marriage certs. for the three above so wait to see what they show. I am also hoping to go to Norwich records office in April to verify or otherwise what I think I have on the family. As far as I know Susan Porter was born in 1798 and is the daughter of James Porter (1754) and Mary Elizabeth Winerals (abt.1770) Do you know if this is correct? There was a daughter Mary E. plus brothers James, Robert and Thomas?? Although English I now live in Spain. If you would like to keep in touch I will let you know when I find out more.
I am fairly sure that this is the same family as I am looking for, however I had Susan Porters husband as being John Dennes - this may be wrong however as the only place I have his name from is Porter Dennes' marriage certificate. I do however have a Martin Dennes as a brother of Porter Dennes. I would be very interested in hearing more about the Porter or Dennes families as I have not got a great deal of detail on this branch of my friend's family but have been facinated by it for several years.

Sorry this is not more help.

Alex

I don't have even Charity's mother's surname. I assume the first name is Mary. I'm focusing on this right now and have looked before to no avail, yet. I did find out that Abner Wakefield took out a land patent in Wayne Co., MI in 1831 and the certificate said he was from Monroe County, New York. If there is a marriage record for Ziel and Mary it might be there if it exists. Both Ziel and Mary must be buried in Boone County, IL, but I researched there many years ago and there is no record of their burials. Any thoughts?

As far as I know nothing was heard again from Peter Morrit. If you contact the Ida Public Library I think they would send you the section of "Genealogy of the Early Settlers" that refers to the Porters for some reasonable fee. My recollection is that it was a genealogy prepared by a descendant. Alternatively someone who monitors this list and lives in Belvidere may be able to help you get it. Though I grew up in Boone County, I live in Indiana.

If you can provide me with an e-mail address, I can send you a descendant report on the Porter information that I have in my database. There are many descendants of those Porters remaining in the Boone County area and some of them had intermarried with some branches of my family.

I only have three sons as descendants of James and Mary Winerals Porter. I have no information about any daughters. There was in the past an LDS Ancestral File on these Porters e.g. GEDCOM file imported on 21 Apr 2002 www.familysearch.com. ROBIN WOOLSON ABRAMS 8921 SWINTON AVE NO HILLS CA USA 91343-4118. Have you searched the ancestry.com user databases?
I did not enter all of the information in the Ida Public Library Porter information in my database.

Thanks so much for the post. Were you ever able to contact Peter Morrit re: the letter? I live in Spain so wonder if there is anyway that I can get to see the records held on the Porter family in Boone Co.? My real interest is in Susan Porter,(1798) the sister of James Winerals Porter (1800) who married a Martin Dennes and lived in Walpole St. Peter, Norfolk. Have only just discovered that she was a Porter, but would love to know more about the original Porters in Garden Prairie. According to the info. in the letter I think that the first were sons of Robert Porter - James 1840 and Thomas 1841, but as you say with so many names the same it is confusing. Susan and Martin had a son, my gt.gt.uncle, James Winerals Dennes. He was a draper and outfitter and had a shop in High Street, Kings Lynn. In the genealogy group that I attend I have found that a friend in the same group is a Porter from the same area so we are making a field trip to Norfolk & Cambs. UK in the Spring. Any info. from any source would be most welcome and I am happy to share what I know.

There are at least three James Winerals Porters who descend from James W. Porter and Mary Winerals. (Born 1800, 1838 and 1931.) This could make your search confusing.

At the Ida Public Library in Belvidere, Illinois exists Genealogy of the Early Settlers. (14 three ring notebooks in Mar 1999) Family group sheets and others typed information contributed by Helen Williams and Martin W. Johnson and others to the Local History room at Ida Public Library. This includes a section on the Porter family who came to Garden Prairie.
I realise that it is a long time since you made the posting about the Porter Family.... I also believe that Susan Porter was the sister of James Winerals Porter, but the James Winerals Dennes who you mention in the 1881 Norfolk census is her son. She married Martin Dennes born 1781. She was my 3x grandmother. I hav e on ly just discovered this link in the family as I did not know Susan's maiden name. Like you I made the connection through the 1881 census.

Any more info. you have would be most welcome as I want tp be sure that Porter Dennes abt. 1823 was Susan's son?

Christine

The Belvidere Cemetery is unlikely to have an obituary for someone not interred there. The online index shows only 4 TATE surnamed individuals. See Below
http://files.usgwarchives.org/il/boone/cemeteries/belv030b.t...
Gertrude and Sidney's burials were handled by Buck Wheeler Hyland and the funeral home may have their obituaries on file. The more recent obits appear on their web page but no Tates. http://www.buckwheelerhyland.com/index.html

TATE, BABY 19570630 BELVIDERE, IL 0 19570630 W-W-S TATE 5 7
TATE, BABY * 19541222 BELVIDERE, IL 0 19541222 W-W-S TATE 5 7
TATE, GERTRUDE M.
Three of your desired obits are offered by The Boone County Historical Museum according to their online index. The obits can be ordered online but they charge $5.00 per obit. They accept paypal or credit card. If you are in town you can go to the museum and read them to see if they are worth the cash to you.
http://www.boonecountyhistoricalmuseum.org/genealogy.html

TATE ADDIE 3-MAY-1878 7-Jul-1949
TATE ANNA C 5-Jul-1913 18-Apr-1999
TATE BETTY A UNKNOWN UNKNOWN
TATE GERTRUDE M 23-FEB-1891 15-Aug-1963
TATE HULAN V 18-Jun-1908 11-Jun-1996
TATE INFENT 2-Jul-1957 2-Jul-1957
TATE JANIE B 20-Jan-1914 16-Mar-1969
TATE JOHN E 7-Apr-1919 2-Dec-1998
TATE JOHNNIE E 4-Sep-1960 26-Apr-1967
TATE MARVIN M UNKNOWN 17-Aug-1994
TATE SIDNEY UNKNOWN 20-Feb-1969

Dan

Does anyone have information on Fanny Young b. 1869, d. 1938 Wisconsin; who married John Kelly b. 1869, d. 1950, Wisconsin. I believe they both were born in Boone Co. Illinois and possibly married in the early 1890's. I have 5 children:
Laura Alina b. 1894, Iowa
James B b. 1897, Iowa
Lula b. 1901, Minnesota
Fanny b. 1903, Minnesota
Margaret b. 1907, Minnesota

How wonderful!! Since that post I found the Fanny M "Helly" in the 1905 Minnesota Census.
Husband: John
Children: Laura A, James B, Lulu M, & Fanny M
It listed them being from Boone Co. Ill. so I made a leap and thought maybe that was the Fanny I was looking for. I'd love to share more information with you. My email: floreenpta@gmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you again, Floreen
I think this is the same Fanny Young that you mention. She was born in Boone County. Married John Joseph Kelly in Belvidere, they moved to Pipestone, MN for a time, then moved to Prairie du Chien, WI. That's where they died. They had my grandmother (although she is my grandmother through adoption only )Laura Almina Kelly. She married my grandfather Aaron Newman, and they adopted my father. I didn't have much information about Fanny's family because she died in 1938, and the obituary I have for John Kelly doesn't list her parents. Hope this helps.

I am looking for anyone aware of the Knowlton Family in Boone Co, Illinois about 1862. I have a photo of an "Irene Knowlton" in my family of whom I know nothing about. The only Irene Knowlton that my research crew can find, is the Emily Irene Knowlton, born about 1862 to William Knowlton, of Boone co, Illinois. William Knowlton is the son of Ephram Knowlton & Sarah Eldridge of Warren Co, Illinois originally from New England. This, Emily Irene Knowlton, is said to have died in Denver, Co.

On my step-father's side, we are from Abram Cronk. I have not located who is parents are either or how is connects to Festus. He was in Boone Co. in the 1865 and 1870 Census. His daughter returned to Belvidere and married Harry Alford/Alfred Ferguson.
