Thanks so much for your suggestion. I think that's them too. Looking further, I found them in the 1920 US Federal Census for Cherry Grove Township under what looks like the spelling Keniss, and under the name Kniss in the Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farmers and Breeders in Carroll County, which was published in 1917. This latter source gives the mother's full name as Dena Temple, but I suspect it was Tempel.

I have a lot of Tempels on my Horner tree, but I don't have this one. According to the 1920 census, Dena was 38 in 1920 and born in Illinois. The Prairie Farmer's source lists the children as Anna, Esther, Henry, and Harvey, and gives their farm's location as 160 acres in Section 36, Cherry Grove Township. That would be in the southeast part of the township, near the intersection of what is now Straddle Creek Road and Maple Grove Road. Does any sound familiar to anyone?

Looking For Parents Of Anna Kneiss

I'm looking for the parents of Anna Kneiss, who married Harold Edward Woessner on February 22, 1924. She was born in Illinois on January 30, 1904 and died December 10, 1944. She didn't have any children. She's buried in Shannon Brethren Cemetery and I just added her tombstone photo to http://www.genealogytrails.com/ill/carroll. I'm fairly closely related to this branch of the Woessners and I've been told she lived around Shannon, at least at the time she was married, but I can't find any census on which she appears with her parents.

I found an Otto Kneiss family on the 1930 US Federal Census for Shannon Township, and I'm wondering if they were her parents. He was 48 in 1930 and his WWII Registration Card shows he was born in Germany on September 25, 1881, and was living in Lanark and farming in 1942. His wife was named Anna. The oldest child on the census was a son named George who was 23. Other children were Edie, Katie, Otto, Rosie, Roy, and Iva. Their name is clearly Kneiss on the census, and I've been assured Anna Kneiss' surname was spelled that way too and not Kness, Kniss, Knoess, or other similar names. Has anyone heard of these people? I can't find any online trees for them.

Alice Horner

The Sauk Valley newspaper has a website, but it looks like they took W. Dwight Smith's obituary down already. There are just two or three lines up when you go in on it today (December 21, 2009 at 1:30am PDT). Mercifully the funeral home name, McKee, in North Manchester, Indiana is named in those three lines, and I got this off their website:

W.
Adam Swab did die in rural Mulberry Grove, IL. A branch of his family, Mahle, lived in that area. From what I have found he was broke and he moved his family south. I was at the Church of the Brethren Cemetery probably in the early '80's and it was overgrown with weeds but a Sheller relative was there when it was well kept and had taken a picture of the tombstone. After his death Eliza moved her family back to the Cherry Grove area where she had family. Her parents, Andrew and Leah Eshelman are buried at Cherry Grove. Hope this clears some things up for you. By the way I live in Lanark.
The obituary for W Dwight Smith of N Manchester, IN was in the Sauk Valley newspaper Dec. 16, 2009. He was a grandson of Cora Idella Swab, a daughter of Adam William Swab and Eliza Ann Eshelman. Cora Idella married William Victor Smith and they were missionaries in China for many years.

Also, I looked again and the Carroll County Birth Certificates Index, on the State of Illinois Archives site, has Anna Clarissa Swab's date of birth as September 27, 1879, not September 26, and in Cherry Grove Township. It lists her name as Clarrisa Swab, and parents as Adam W. and Eliza A. I use this source a lot and find it to be usually accurate. It doesn't always give the child's name, but it did in this case.

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datab...

Alice Horner

Ms. Horner, as I have it, Adam's date and place of death match yours. Adam and Eliza moved from Pennsylvania to Cherry Grove with 4 small children in 1865. Eliza's parents had moved to Cherry Grove the previous year. In 1880 the Swab family moved to Mulberry Grove. Anna Clarissa, the 13th of 14 children, was born 26 September 1879 and married Daniel Eichelberger 12 July 1895.
--John Myers Eshelman

When I saw your post this morning, I thought I'd fill in some gaps I have on my Horner tree. Where did Adam William Swab die? I see almost everyone posting a public member tree anyway gives his date of death as February 11, 1882 in Mulberry Grove, Bond County, Illinois? Is that what you have?

I have to wonder about that Mulberry Grove, in as much as the family had been living in Cherry Grove, Carroll County, Illinois as recently as 1879, or at least that's where one of these trees says Adam & Eliza's daughter Anna Clarissa Swab was born on September 8, 1879. I can't find the family on any 1880 census. Bond County is in Southern Illinois. It just seems unlikely they'd go there, especially when people from Carroll County were emigrating other places at that time, like Dakota Territory, Nebraska, Kansas, etc. Do you have anything specific on this?

Alice Horner

After Adam William Swab died on 11 Feb. 1882, Elizabeth Ann (Eliza)at age 44 married Emanuel Gantz. Adam and Eliza had, according to my records, 13 children. After Mr. Gantz died in 1900, Eliza resided alternately with some of her children, at least one of whom probably lived in Dubuque. Eliza died in the Old Peoples' Home, Mt.
I have a Catherine Price b. 12/25/1795, prob in Franklin Co PA. No marriage or other info on her. Info is probably from Price family history by Wenger. Others in her family moved to Carroll Co, IL. There is a reference to one of them wanting to be near her sisters there. Much of this group moved on to Ivester, Grundy Co, IA and many are buried in the Sheller cemetery there. I have a feeling it is the same person, but you will need to find more proof.

This is all very close to my own Miller tree that was in Carroll Co, but I don't think your Abraham is from my Miller family. There is no family to place him within.

I also have an unrelated Jacob Miller born in 1798 in prob PA who moved to Carrol Co. I have had a hard time keeping him untangled from my own Miller family, but I am sure he is not related to my own Miller family. He could be a brother or similar to your Abraham.

My tree is on Familyhart. You should definitely look there for clues.

Catherine b. 25 Dec 1795 d. 26 Feb 1886 from what I have seen. They moved to Carroll Co. in the 1850's, on the census in Cherry Grove in 1860. Does anyone know where they are buried? His mother was Prudence Unknown, according to a census record. Other records indicate that he was born in Saratoga County, NY, possibly Hadley. Other children were born in Gennessee County, NY. I'm still looking for birth information for William Stephenson Jenkins, so if anyone could help I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to learn the information for my cousin who is 88 years old.
Hello,

Well, it's a little confusing, but Catherine Leahy is a distant cousin in one branch of my family, while the Smith's are in another branch. It was just coincidental that they both lived in the Carroll County area, so I was collecting records for both at the same time.

With regards to the Smiths, yes, we are related! Anna Smith, b. 1858 in Mt. Carroll, IL, was my gg-grandmother and the younger sister of your Sarah. This has been a really tough family to research, but Sarah and Anna were daughters of Joseph P. Smith, who was a wagonmaker, and served in the Civil War. He was born in 1824 in Washington County, Maryland, and his wife Martha Jones was born in 1829 in the same county. They were married 9/2/1846 in Trinity Lutheran Church in Boonsboro, MD. Joseph died in 1916 and Martha died in 1899. If you are near Mt. Carroll, they are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Smith's were most likely originally Schmidt's or Schmitt's, and were of German descent. Martha was probably of some combination of Welsh and English extraction.

I have a photo of Anna Smith, and would be happy to exchange more information, if you would like to contact me at Joseph_Leahy@yahoo.com .

Thanks,

Joe

This is in reply to Joe's question about William A Noble. Background-Frisbee Smith was my great grandmother's brother. Her name was Sarah & she married William Noble. They had at least 7 children, the last born in 1880. I have no death date on her or William. I have never run across the name of your Catherine. What do you know of her? Was she a second wife of my great-grandfather? Information has been hard to come by for this branch of my family tree & you appear to be related. Thanks for any information you can give.
Hi Sandra - Thank you for this additional information about Fred's family. My database is here:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

on Rootsweb Worldconnect. I am descended from Samuel Scott - William's brother. There are a lot of Scott cousins out there.

John H. Scott and Sarah Hoffmire left NJ to go out west. John died and Sarah went on to Illinois. The Hoffmire's are a fascintaing family, too. I will try to send you some information (stories) in the next day or two. Ladona Wardlow has done a lot of research on the Scotts. It's said that John H. Scott was born in Scotland but we haven't been able to find them past John H.'s father in New Jersey, despite our best efforts.

Very nice to meet a new cousin!

My great grandfather was Fred A. Scott, who was the son of William R. Scott and Mary Hammer and the younger brother of Vienna Eugenia. Fred was born March 20, 1863, in Lanark, Carroll County, Illinois. In 1886, he married Nannie (Nancy) Pierce and settled in Red Oak, Iowa. Fred owned farmland in Council Bluffs, Iowa, but he lived in Red Oak until his death in 1947. Nannie and Fred had only one child, Clarence L.
I've been on here trying to find info about my husband's grandparents, and not having much luck. I did find where their church had baptism records of the two oldest of their kids online, but no marriage certificate or birth certificates for themselves.

W. Rummel I think was born abt 1930, not sure where.

E. Wilcox's mother was Ella G Smith. Father possibly Charles. This is as far back as I've been able to find info online. I believe their family owned a grocers or general store at one time.

I'm trying to get this done for a surprise for the family for this Christmas. My husband just lost his father this month, so we were thinking it would be nice to get this all put together before we lose anyone else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Shai

I've been on here trying to find info about my husband's grandparents, and not having much luck. I did find where their church had baptism records of the two oldest of their kids online, but no marriage certificate or birth certificates for themselves.

E. Wilcox's mother was Ella G Smith. I believe their family owned a grocers or general store at one time.

I'm trying to get this done for a surprise for them for this Christmas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Shai

Newell or N.C. Paddleford

Does anyone have more information on Newell, or N.C., Paddleford? He was born between 1810 and 1820, per the 1840 Jackson Co., Iowa census. He married Lorinda Wood on 8 Mar 1840 in Carroll Co., IL. She married again in Dec 1848, so I believe Newell had died by then. Can anyone tell me where he was born or where he is buried?
I found two excerpts that relate to him.
"A man by the name of Paddleford was the leading musician in this section. He came from the City of New York and his fame as a violinist went out all over the country He was not an ordinary fiddler but was a composer and violinist of great ability.
"There lies before me a manuscript book of his music which was presented to F.P. Bowen by Mrs. Hilsinger of Sabula, whose father, Mr. Scarborough, a violin player, had played second violin for years with Paddleford. These two composed the orchestra. Some titles just noted in glancing through the book "Begone Dull Care," and "Gen Ye How the Piddle Goes" seem appropriate for the occasions." - excerpted from The Story of Savanna: The First 100 Years - Part 2.

"In the winter of 1839-40, the village [Sabula, Iowa] enjoyed the luxury of a "real live" dancing-school. The professor in the Terpsichorean [dancing] art was one Paddleford, who lived on the frontier and devoted himself entirely to his profession, in which he is said to have excelled." - excerpted from 1879 History of Jackson county Iowa, pg 564.
Can anyone help me?

I am attempting to locate a tombstone inscription for Abram (Abraham) and Sarah (GARVIN) MISNER (also spelled MISENER, MISINGER) who died between 1870 and 1880, probably in or near Lanark, Carroll Co., Illinois. Both were born in Maryland (probably Washington County) -- Abram was born around 1801 and Sarah in 1802.

They were enumerated in the 1870 census living in Mount Morris, Ogle Co., Illinois (as "Abram and Sarah Meysner") but their son, Martin Misner married Mary POFFENBERGER in Carroll Co., in 1863. Then, Abram MISNER married his second wife, "Mrs. (Eliza) Ann Finicle" in Carroll Co., on July 26, 1874.

Eliza Ann Finicle was the widow of Daniel Finicle, a stone mason who was killed in an accident near Lanark, Ill. in 1871.

Mrs. Eliza Misner (evidently already widowed) was enumerated in the 1880 census living in Mount Morris Twp., Ogle Co., Illinois with her son George Finicle. She later moved to Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio where a couple of her daughters moved -- and died there November 2, 1911. She was buried in Galion's Fairview Cem., on November 4, 1911. Her death certificate says she was the daughter of Jacob REIHM (other sources say REAM) and Catherine FLICKINGER.

Any information about Abram and Sarah Misner would be most appreciated!

-- Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan

Hi, I came across your post while searching around online - I'm a Verzani descendant, living near San Francisco, CA. I'm interested in getting more info about the Verzani family in Barga. I'm from the Andrew Verzani branch, starting in the US in the 1850s, and there are some details missing from that history as well, if you happen to know anything. Regarding the Verzani book, I think my Aunt has a copy of it - it was created by a Loyd Verzani, in Sparks Nevada. I think it was created in the 1990s, but I'm not sure, and I'm not sure if it is still possible to get a copy. The info I have for Loyd is PO Box 2010, Sparks, Nevada, 89432. But like I said, this is from awhile ago...

cheers,

Josh

NY.William Sr. must have died in the 1850s because Rhoda was living with her son John in the 1860 US Census in Canisteo,Steuben Co.After a while, four Athertons removed to Carroll Co. Ill.;Daniel Atherton and wife Louisa,Sarah Atherton and Rhoda Atherton. Two allied families were Hadley and Hallet.
When George Myers and wife Agnes Kyster migrated to Seneca Co., Ohio, they brought along all of their married children except for one, John Joseph Myers and his wife Maria/Mary
Snyder. John bought George's land and they had six children, including the George you are asking about. This
George Myers was born in 1829, married in 1858 and died in 1906 and is buried at the Pres. Church Cem. at Tomahawk.

Hello Penny,

Thank you for the information on the Myers family. I do have a copy of Jacob’s probate records, which were very helpful for finding a bit more on his children. I am not a descendant of Jacob and Hannah, but I am researching the Siler family of Berkeley County, (West) Virginia. Hannah (Siler) Myers was a cousin to my ancestors and I am trying to flesh out the Siler family tree.

Would you happen to know anything about the George Myers, born about 1826 in (West) Virginia, who married Eleanor “Lany” Siler in Berkeley County on 11 March 1858?

Thanks again,
Marjean
