Guess I missed the Ancestral Files and IGI-North America listings for them as I was trying to figure out where they were in the 1880 Census.I'll re-check and see what is posted for this family.
I use www.familysearch.org a lot of the time including the record search Pilot site for my older resarch, deaths, census',etc.
Wonder if maybe they were missed in 1880 Kansas Census. The one John Scott listed on www.HertageQuest Online in 1880 Kansas census apparently is not him unless it is under a
different spelling of his surname.

Harvey L Pearson

I am seeking to find descendants of this couple as John W. would be my first cousin, thrice removed though his grandfather Adam Hostetter.I have an apparent death date of 23 Jan.,1914 in Mattoon for John and 15 Feb 1942 for his wife Lovina also in Mattoon.I know they were enumerated in the 5th Ward,Matoon on either 19 or 20 April,1910 with 1 child out of 4 that were born living at home,a daughter Lota M.
Don't have a Marriage date or place for them or I probably could have found the rest of the children in 1880 if there were any born that early.
Also would appreciate any copies of obits that may have appeared in the local newspapers as well as cemetery burial sites.Thank you for your assistance.

Harvey L Pearson

I have never been able to determine exactly who his parents were however he and his first wife Susanna B. Haskins were married August 2, 1850 in Knox County, Indiana. She died August 16, 1858 and is buried in the old Charleston Cemetery across from the Charleston Fair Grounds. His second wife was Mary Jane Doty.
Wm. REES and family circa 1865 in Mattoon

I am looking for information on the family of William REES and his wife Sarah Jane CRAWFORD, believed to have been in Mattoon during 1865. They married in Rock Island county, Illinois in 1854. As of the 1860 census, they were living in Wayne county, Illinois, and by the 1870 census they were living in Macoupin county. They were in Montgomery county, Illinois by 1880; Peoria county, Illinois by 1900; and Tazewell county, Illinois in 1910. Widowed Sarah was in Mississippi during the 1920 census. Two daughters married 10 years apart (1888 and 1898) in Howell county, Missouri, so they may have lived there as well.

In particular, I am looking for 4 children of William and Sarah who died young, and may perhaps be buried in Coles county. Daughter Salinda(?), born about 1856, was shown in the 1860 census but was deceased before the 1870 census. Son John J. REES was born about July 1860, and was also deceased by the 1870 census. I have read the William and Sarah had a set of twins who died as infants about 1868, but no other information.

In the 50th wedding anniversary announcement for their daughter Alma A. (REES) REHM, her place of birth was given as Mattoon, on 1 August 1865. There is a Wm. REES given in the 1865 Illinois state census of Mattoon. However, the image of that census on Ancestry.com is quite blurry, and I cannot read the column headers. It appears he had 27 residents, mostly men, in his home - a hotel, or perhaps an alms house? As I can't read the image, I am unsure how many children were in the home. There should have at least been two sons, Edward and William Henry, and possibly daughter Alma if the census was taken after her birth. It may also include daughter Salinda and son John J., if they were still living.

Any information on the children, the state census, or anything else pertaining to the family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi:

Looks like you went to a lot of trouble to look up all of that information. Unfortunately, I already have all of that documentation on my family. Sorry you went to all the trouble. The missing piece is that I can find no further records of John B Crawford other than what I had previously stated in my posting. I have a copy of his marriage record and a court document which he filed for his daughter Martha Crawford Allison when she inherited some land in Coles Co. I also found one reference about him visiting the city in the Mattoon newspaper, but I have no idea where he moved to after he left Coles County. I would love to find out where he moved to, when and where he died and is buried. Thanks again for all of the hard work.

Mary Crawford

I can only use Ancestry at the library itself, and won't be able to go for a couple of weeks. But the IL Trails site was a help, even tho I didn't find Bastion there. I DID find John and Hannah Seas in the Coles Co. 1850 Census. It's an unusual name. An Aaron Seass, a younger generation, married Bastion's eldest daughter in 1873. I believe I have John and Hannah's burial in the Seass cemetery in Moultrie Co. So you helped me find one more little piece of the puzzle. And all the little pieces help. The short history of Coles Co. and Mattoon, where Bastion's son was b. in 1859, was also a small piece of the puzzle. I hadn't thought of Cumberland Co., so will try the same sources there. So thank you!

Doris

Does anyone have access to the actual/original sextant records for the Campground Cemetery in Paradise Township? I am pretty positive that my ancestor, James Crawford and his first wife are buried there, but the Prairie Sleeps does not list him there. James's farm was in Paradise Township, very near the cemetery. His daughter Elizabeth Crawford Penn and 3 of her children are buried there also. All of his neighbors and friends were buried there also, so I am pretty positive he has to be buried there. I have personally visited the cemetery and frankly the cemetery is in such bad shape I was not able to find anything. There was a big pile of tombstones piled in middle of the cemetery, and as you can imagine you would need several strong men to lift them to read the names. I was able to find the Penn children's graves, but not their mother Elizabeth Crawford Penn's stone. If anyone knows where the original sextant records could be found, or if you have a copy, please contact me. Thanks!

I have also found court documents placing his daughter Martha Crawford Allison in Coles County. He is mentioned in James Crawford's will/probate record in Coles County. But, I simply cannot find him in any census records in Illinois. If anyone has any information about him, I would be most grateful.

Doris:

I spent a few hours searching for the family in the 1860 census to no avail. I looked through every resource I have in Coles County and they were simply not there. Shelby is right next to Coles County to the west and Cumberland county is to the south, so you might check around in that whole area. My ancestor lived in Coles County, so I am pretty familiar with the resources. The Coles Co. IL Trails page is at: http://genealogytrails.com/ill/coles You can also check with the Coles County genealogy society. I'd appreciate it if you'd check for him on that site. What's their URL? I've got lots of other people to look for in IL too, and need to find Bastion in lots of other places and times. This guy moved around, a lot, as a minister, before finally settling in Sullivan, Moultrie Co. IL, in the late 1860s. He ought NOT to be in Coles Co. in the 1860 US census, since he was serving a church in Shelby Co. but since he had a son b. in Coles Co. Nov. 1859, I thought just maybe he happened to be in Coles Co. when the census was taken. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Doris

Doris:

Another way to check census records is a site called Heritage Quest. This search site has all the census records. You can access it through your public library or through the LDS research centers. In my state (Nebraska) any person can access it through their home computers using your drivers license number. Ask your public library about it. One thing to know though is the spelling of names was dependent on the census taker. So the spellings can be very wrong. On Heritage Quest you will have to experiment with spelling. On Ancestry you can at least do wild cat searches with first names and dates of birth to try and find them. On Ancestry you can flip through the township pages, although if one page is missing that will not help. Have you checked out the IL Trails page for Coles County? I have found it to be a wonderful source of information. I will try to do a search for you and see what I can find out.

Mary Crawford

OK, now I understand your reference to IA! I thought it came from the 1870 census. I have NS Bastion's Bible, and he gives Jennie's place of birth as Dubuque, Iowa, and Myra's place of birth as Davenport, Iowa, so I think they really were b. IA. I don't know what the librarian was refering to, but I know they were b. in IA, not IN!

The reference to Martha Bastion is very helpful, and I'm working on tracing her and her possible father in adjoining counties.

Thanks,
Doris

It is Coles county Il 1870 census.. As for the reference of IA is this. I was searching for family and I came across the "IA" state of birth. I looked and coulnt find any one in IA, so asked a library assist me, she says that IA means Indiana and the writer put down the first few of the letters of the state so he/she could tell the difference from other states. I was looking in the west when I should be looking toward the east. Sorry I must of miss understanding your message, I thought you stated IA.

Thanks for what clearly took more work on your part!

But let me make sure I understand exactly what you found. This IS Coles Co. 1870 census?

Martha Bastion wouldn't be part of NS's immediate family, but she could well be a neice. NS's father and siblings were in IN from 1821 on and I can trace some of his siblings there but not all of them. I've always wondered how NS got from IN to IL, because he was only 19 0r 20 when he got there, where I know he was in 1830. I've always wondered if he came with an older brother, one of whom I can't find anywhere. There are many Bastions in IN, many fewer in IL south of Chicago. So this Martha could be NS's neice, and you may have found someone else I'm interested in. Thanks!

The other thing I'm unclear about is your reference to IA. Reading your message, I don't see any of the people noted as having been b. in IA.

Can you clarify that this is the Coles Co. 1870, and your reference to IA, and why it means IN?

Thanks,
Doris

Looking for 1860 US Census in Coles Co. for Nicholas Schermerhorn Bastion (b. 1808 NY). Usually shows up as NS, once as US. Surname can be Bastian; in 1865 IL state transcription is Bastense. Makes tracking him difficult. So does the fact that he moved around, a lot. In 1859-1864 he was pastor of Christian (Disciples of Christ) church in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. IL. But Nov 13, 1859, son N.S. Bastion jr. b. Matoon, Coles Co. Since as a pastor and revivalist he traveled, he may have been in Coles Co. when the 1860 Census was taken. I can't find him anywhere. Someone has told me that in Ancestry, there is one image of 1860 Coles Co. that won't come up. It is remotely possible that this page includes the Bastion family. Does someone have an alternative source of the images, and can check for me, please?

Since I only have him for 1850, 1854 (in IA), 1865 (in Alton, Madison Co, IL), 1870, and 1880, and he died in 1884, any additional data points are important.

The family should include

NS Bastion 52 b. NY
Eunice (usually mispelled)32 b. OH
Jennie (sometimes Jane) 8 b. IA
Myra (sometimes Mary) 3 b. IA
NS jr (sometimes US) infant b. IL
maybe others--if so, please include

Please give me the URL, if possible, so I can get a copy for my files.

Many thanks
Doris Waggoner
Seattle

Susan is buried in the same cemetery as her parents, albeit at opposite ends. She is buried next to her oldest son, Manford Miller. David and Mary are buried next to their son, Marion, Susan's brother. Marion's wife and son, William, are buried next to him.

These can be found on www.papemortuary.com.

I am researching for a friend who is decendant from Susannah's father David and 1st wife Mary. Trying to figure out if Susannah's mother Mary was the 1st or 2nd wife with the name of Mary.

I am trying to contact Brent Taylor about Kounse genealogy. I am in a informal research group that has descendants of George Kounse/Kountz. I am a descendant of Henry Koontz and Susanna Schaeffer. Henry Koontz was the son of Balthasar/Balser Kunz/Counts/Counce. I believe that he was a brother to John Kounse/Kountz who was married to Keziah. Please contact me at khnabours at sbcglobal.net.

I found this photo in a box of family stuff, and _think_ that it may have been taken in Coles County. My first guess was that it might by in Oakland, but haven't been able to locate the scene in the limited views in Google Street.

****** Would-be image here, but I can't post it. Does anyone know whether Photobucket is locked out or something? *******

The steeple of the church in the rear is quite distinctive, so I'm hoping that someone might recognize it. Great thanks to anyone who can provide a clue!

Greg

The cemetery books (see attachments) for Coles County, Illinois, Shiloh Cemetery near Janesville, 8 miles south of Charleston, IL has George Gordon (b. 7.10.1857 & d. 7.2.1932), Emily Gordon (b. 3.5.1854 & d. 7.20.1920, Lawrence Gordon (b. 7.22.1881 & d. 12.2.1941)listed. Iva M. Woolridge's dates as listed are 1886 - 1958. Dorsa D.'s are 1886-1930. Nannie Devore's dates are 1883 - 1917. I went to the Shiloh Cemetery and found numerous Gordon's but several stones were unreadable. The weather last week was awful so I had to wait until today. I didn't have enough time to explore the "New" Gordon Cem. but will try another day. Hope this helps.

Okay, with that information, you're talking about a Shiloh that's about 18 or 20 miles from me. I would be happy to take pictures for you... if I can find it! I've never been there but I have a map of cemeteries in Coles Co. and am sure I can find it. Probably can do it Wednesday.

I'm not really sure. It seems some of these people are buried in the Janesville (or New Gordon) Cemetery in Pleasant Grove Township, Coles County, Illinois; Ransom and Nannie Gordon and Nannie's family the Devore's. Then, there are others who are buried in a Shiloh Cemetery. I don't really know where these are located. Thanks for the response!

Emily
