I am looking for descendants of the James Francis b. 1783 in MA d. 13 Aug 1866 in Crawford Co. His son's were John C., Robert and Calvin D. Calvin D. went directly from Ohio to Iowa in 1855. James along with his son's Robert and John settled in Crawford Co. I would like to know if any of the descendants have a family bible or information in regard to James nativity or who his wife was. She died before he left Ohio but cannot find a cemetery record for her - she was Anny/Anna/Ann. I will answer all messages and help anyone that I can.

Oliver Perry Bredwell was married 3 times. Lillian Watts was his first wife. He had 3 daughters, Mary Jane, Della Ellen, and Henrietta "Etta" and 1 son John Harlan. Harlan had only one child who died unwed. Etta had 3 children, none of which had any children. Jane has several grandchildren living in and around Oblong. Terry Shoulders used to have the flower shop there in Oblong. He has several brothers and a sister living there. The last I talked to him, his mom was still living. Jane and Etta married York brothers and Harlan married the niece of the brothers. My grandmother was from O.P.'s second marriage to Laura Temperance Maloy. His third marriage was a nightmare for my grandmother. The cruel stepmom described the relationship she had with Erse. There were no children from that third marriage. My grandmother married the nephew to the two York brothers, Jim Littlejohn. Della is the only one to marry outside the York family. She married a King. Several of her descendants are in the Robinson, Lawrence area. Dwight Miller has a nursing home in Robinson and is her grandson. Both of OP's first and second wife were double first cousins. I have the funeral book from OP's funeral. I found Jency's death certificate but could not find her grave when I looked.
I live in Longview, Texas. My regular email address is boccasue@hotmail.com. If you will send me your phone to the above email, I will call. Best, Bocca Sue

Yes, I am willing to share info. Currently I have completed a lot of the info about Samuel and his family except for who Samuel's parents were or for who his first wife and the mother of his first three children are. I do not agree with the assumption that my Samuel's parents were James Bridwell and Sophia Etcher. For this fact to be correct, Samuel would have had to have been married to two different women at the same time, having two sets of children at the same time. But the most solid evidence that the Samuel of Ohio is not the Samuel of Crawford County is the fact that the Samuel of Crawford County appears to have died before 1860 (I am still checking this out with the Crawford County Historical Society) and the Samuel of Ohio appears in the 1860 Census of Ohio. This would also mean that Samuel of Crawford County's first wife is not the Hannah mentioned in the Ohio 1860 Census. I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Crawford County Samuel and his second wife Jensy (Jency). They were married Sept 15, 1847. And, on Jency's death certificate, she is listed as a widow. I have Lillian's mother's name as Hulda and Lillian's husband as being James Littlejohn. Is this correct?

Diana Drake and Elizabeth McCrory should have been H1*

I did the genomic test on 23&me and found out that my mitochondrial DNA is haplogroup H1*. Since people get their MtDNA from their mothers, I can follow the chain back in time and conclude my H1* should be the same as that of Diana Drake, Elizabeth McCrory, and Rossea French.

23&Me also has this new feature using autosomal DNA (i.e., the other 22 chromosomes, besides the Y, and MT) to identify cousins. They identify about 140 probable cousins for me based on shared strands on particular chromosomes (different spots in most cases - but where the same strand is shared by 3 or 4 of us, it helps in figuring out the connection). My mother - one generation closer to the huge families of the 18th and 19th centuries - has 200 matches. My kid appears to have about 60 on my maternal side. So it looks like the "signal" of distant ancestors is lost about half the time from one generation to the next through recombination once you get 5 or 6 generations out.

I've traded emails with ~20 or so 4th or 5th cousins so far. No obvious Drake or McCrory kin yet, but I have figured out the links with 3, and have learned some interesting things about different parts of the tree (i.e., French Canadian ancestors on my father's side, married surnames of people who seemed to disappear from censuses, etc.).

Genealogical fun via modern genomics...

I am looking to find someone who would be able to tell me of my family.. What kind ancestry did they have? Am I part Irish as I suspect? Are strangely hued blue eyes common? I have a million questions that I have been deprived answers of, and I am at a point in my life when I have the right to ask these questions myself instead of having others ask for me. I am afriad to name names on here, but I will say that I know both of my grandparents have passed, and they had a large number of children.

Jim, How about I bother you with my list.
TERRELL ca. 1850 -, CARR ca.1850-, CREAMER/CRAMER ca 1850-,
DAVIS, ca ?, WRIGHT. I have HYRE/HIRE/HEYER etc. and SHOBE/SHOPE/SHOAT/SCWAB from 1750 AUGUSTA CO VA and from LANCASTER CO PA, and from Europe before that. They came over ca 1740's, some before, some after. They came with HAAS, LUTZ, and others.

Some of the TERRELLs, and DAVIS were from LAWRENCE CO. IN.
Before IN the TERRELLS were somewhere in KY ca 1815, and VA before that. Davis could have ANY time-line and any place of origin. I know some were in HAMPSHIRE/HARDY and ROCKINGHAM VA 1700's. I believe they were from the NJ DAVIS families, or NY. They were seen in late 1600's and early 1700's in those locations. May have come to VA mid 1700's with other families from NJ. Alot of them were Welsh.
Some TERRELLS may have lived in JASPER CO IL before CRAWFORD CO.
Also, I have SHOOKS in my family from VA who came to ST.CLAIR with the BADGELY PARTY 1798. I also had some in FAYETTE CO OH after 1808.
Other names I recognize form ST.CLAIR CO IL were HIGGINS, SMITHS, WILDERMAN, COX, BARKER, SHOOK, SHORT, GRUBB, PHILLIPS, ALEXANDER, and more. It seems some of them decided to move to IN.
Hope this info may help someone.
I keep hoping to see what a TERRELL looks like as that was my gr grandmothers maiden.
Thank-you so much.
The Land Office was established at Palestine May 11, 1820. Before that time land for Crawford county was registered at Vincennes, Indiana. I found some of Joseph Kitchell's land deals there. He and Cullom plotted the town of Palestine in May of 1818 and he was the first registrar at the Palestine(Crawford County) landoffice. At that time land all the way north of Chicago came under his juridiction. Crawford county was BIG, about 1/3 of what is now the state of Illinois.

Bet you didn't know that they also connected into the Kitchells.
Sarah Gill Hardesty, Kearney Hardesty, Mary Elisabeth Walker Hardesty and do you know who U Hardesty is that married Sarah Gill??
I know you are connected to Mary Walker because your mother was a Walker and YOU get connected into my tree.

I'm sorry but I thought I had heard at class reunion (PHS1959) that Jim List died this past summer in July. I am hoping another relative is manning this site and will reply since these messages mostly were posted several years ago. Jim played next door to us when we were growing up.

This is such a good story about the Houpt building. When I was in that area several years back I drove into Palestine and did photograph the Houpt building from the outside. I am a Houpt with ancestors who were at one point in Sullivan Co. IND. I had little time, but was not aware that there was a shop in the building. This may have been around 2000 - 2003.

I would love to hear some of the local Houpt stories. Do you know if your friend who owns the gift shop has e-mail capabilities? If she does, perhaps you could ask if she would be willing to communicate with some of us Houpt descendants. I live on the west coast, so doubt I will be returning any time soon.

By the way I do own one of those Houpt cookie cutters.
Thanks. Jean

From the "Illinois Historical Crawford County Biograpical" published 1909; pg. 727.
FRYE, D. E.
[paragraph 2]
Among those who have attained very satisfactory results is D. E. Frye, on Section 3, Montgomery Township. Mr. Frye was born in New Hebron, Crawford County, January 5, 1865, a son of HAMILTON FRYE, who was himself a native of Virginia, who came to New Hebron when a young man. He was married in Crawford County to Sarah C. Buzzard, a daughter of Samuel Buzzard, a prosperous farmer of the county. Hamilton Frye and wife were parents of the following children: Louis, Palmer, Ella, Charles, Edward, Allen (deceased) and D. E., all of whom were born in the county. When Hamilton Frye first located at New Hebron, he entered the employ of a merchant as clerk in a general store, eventually bought a home and died Repulican, but frequently voted for the best man according to his judgement in county and township affairs.
D. E. Frye was reared and educated in Crawford County, and when his mother, who was early left a widow, married John Senor Wesley, the family moved three miles west to Flat Rock, locating on a farm. [the rest of the article is about D. E. Frye]

Am looking for information on Hampson Fry who was born in Virginia in 1831 and died in Crawford County, Illinois. He is buried with his wife, Sarah C. Bussard Fry, in the New Hebron Cemetery, Crawford County, Illinois. I have a letter from him to his mother, who may have been Rebecca Lindamood Fry, then of Henry County, Indiana and formerly of Rockingham County, Virginia. His father may have been Samuel Fry of same. I have a possible tintype of him in a Civil War uniform. His cemetery listing has CW by it, and the letter from his is written on stationary with a portrait of Gen. J.C. Fremont, a Union General on it. The letter is not about the war, but was written in Oct. of 1862 or 1863. Any information appreciated.

Here is the obituary for her husband, John Stifle. I would love to trade information. I relate to the Stifles also.

Uncle John E. Stifle, a pioneer of Crawford county, who had lingered in illness and blindness for several months past, passed to his reward at his home north of town Friday. Funeral services were held from the house, and interment in the Wilkin cemetery Saturday. The deceased leaves a companion and several children to mourn his demise. Consolations to the bereaved.

I am having no luck locating a death record for Rebecca Stifle(nee Boyles). She died May 3, 1906 in Crawford Co., but the Crawford County Clerk's office has no record, and the Illinois Regional Archive Data Base at Eastern Ill University has no record. I know she is buried in Wilken Cemetery in Licking Twp. Where else should I look?

I am searching for information about a Rebecca Boyles, 16, who was living with the Jesse Barlow family in Crawford Co. Ill. in 1850. She was born in Ill. in 1833 and died in Crawford Co. Ill. May 3, 1906. She is buried in Wilkens Cemetery in Crawford Co. She married John E. Stifle Dec 26, 1853 in Crawford Co. There is no record of her death in the county clerk's office. The census records say her parents are from Ky. I want to know her ancestry and why she was living with the Barlows.
