I have aquired copies of the Johnson Harris Garrett Bible which lists his children with dates of birth and death for a majority of them. If you would be interested in seeing these, please email me directly at mafreeman1@hotmail.com. One big problem that arrised from seeing this Bible is that Melinda E. Garrett Shelton Smith is not listed as a child of Johnson Harris Garrett and Belinda C. Wilson. Much confusion. Would love to talk to you off these pages.

Re: Looking for fmaily info on William R. Duncan

Looking at the Internet and census', I found some info about your William R. Duncan. He was born 10/14/1808 in New York to Robert Duncan (of Scotland) and Lucy Boyles. He died 1/5/1879 in Murphysboro, Jackson Co., Ill. He first married Amanda Hutsell 6/15/1837 in Morgan Co., Ind. She was born 9/20/1815 in Bourbon Co., Ky. and died 11/22/1847 (possibly in the birth of child Jesse), in Morgan Co. Her father was born in Va. and mother in Maryland. As you already know, William and Amanda had 4 children: Thomas (born ca 1839); Peter (b. 1842); Giles (b. 1844); and Jesse (b. 1847)- all born in Morgan Co.

Following Amanda's death, William then married Sarah Catherine Hines 11/25/1849 (probably in Morgan Co.). Sarah was born 4/19/1826 supposedly in Catawba Co., N.C. and apparently died during the period 1862-64 in Jackson Co., Ill. (Apparently William and Sarah had moved from Morgan Co. to Jackson Co. circa 1854-55). They had 5 children: Mary Ann (b. 1850); Darius (b. 1853); Sarah Catherine (b. 1856); John (b.1859); and William Robert (b. 1862). It appears that son John died as a young child.

On 4/1865 William married Susan Trammell Dougherty (Daugherty ?) in Jackson Co. and they had 3 children: Edward (b. 1869); Scott (b. 1871); and your Albert (b. 1873). It appears that Susan brought 2 children (from her marriage to Dougherty) to this marriage: Candace (??) (b. 1862); and Joseph (b. 1864). Possibly William adopted these 2 children.

I guess thus is all I know. I am not related. Bob Eddings.

this is an example, like they tell us, that every 5th generation our lines cross.
I have a patriot Richard Marlow. He came from Md by flat boat with his daughter and her family,Thomas Richards to Yellow Banks Ky.. Three of George Marlow's sons settled in Perry Co Il. He is Richard's brother.I don't know if Beverly's wife is one of those Marlows. They are like the Williams, their lines are fruitful.
I am trying to locate a lady in Willisville. H D Williams of Valier,Il, remarked ,that his siter, who lived in Willisville has a Bible of Mumpherd Williams, date 1814. I don't know her name. I read that in a Franklin Co Il book. I sure hope I might see that Bible some day.
Thanks for replying.

Maybe this will help a little. An excellent genealogist and my friend, Suzanne Meredith Feltmeyer "Merry", now deceased did some research on this family. The focus of her work was on the Marlow's but the William's married into the Marlow's. Here are excerpts from her emails to me:

I found something kind of interesting...You remember Beverly Williams that married Patsy Marlow....well his dad was Joseph Terry Williams. There is a Revolutionary pension out there on Ancestry provided by Tom Shawcross. It only mentions two sons: Beverly and Mumford. There is a Coleman Williams bouncing around Jackson County at the same time, but he isn't mentioned.

Well, Joseph's mother was Lucy Terry...She married a guy named William Williams and I have a copy of his will where he mentions Joseph Terry Williams. I also have Lucy Terry's father's will. He even mentions Lucy's married name and one of her sons...

Now Joseph Terry Sr., had a father named Benjamin and his mother was Elizabeth Irby...Edward Marlow married Rebecca Irby. I know Rebecca was a daughter of Peter...got his will. Just don't know of the relationship between Peter Irby and Elizabeth Irby Terry.

These counties connect and at one time were one county. Need help connecting sons of Joseph Terry Williams. J T was in War of Revolution. He was in Jackson co census 1830. Melinda Williams Burk is recorded as an early settler,in Franklin co book that she was in Illinois by 1823.She is supposed to be Green B Williams's daughter. (She named her son Green.) He is said to be J T's son. Mumpherd Williams has also been named as J T William's son. Kibble Williams's daughter, Jemima, married Melinda Burk's son Green Berry Burke.. One of Melinda's sons Lewis Burk is in House hold of Alfred William's in 1860 perry co census. He is Kibble's son.I think Kibble is either Green Williams son or brother. Green is in 1820 Census in Tn. Kibble was b tn abt 1808. By 1830, Green is in FRanklin Co Il. I have no proof of J T's sons, only what I have seen on ancestry trees. Alfred William's pension record has him stating he was born in Elk town in 1839. His father Kibble's Bible was destroyed in fire. Also tells of his father Kibble and Jane Farmer's marriage in Williamson co Il. Their first child Martha Williams Black was born abt 1832 . So, Kibble was most likely in father's home in 1830 census.

I am looking for any information anyone might have about William R DUNCAN (1808-1879)who was married 3 times (at least that I know of).

1st wife Amanda HUTSELL (1815-1847)who died in Martinsville, IN
Their children: Thomas R.DUNCAN, Peter H.DUNCAN Giles M. DUNCAN and Jessee H.

2nd wife Sarah HINES (may have married 5 days after Amanda's death!) Her children: Mary Ann DUNCAN, Sarah C.DUNCAN and William P. DUNCAN
I have very little info on her, but believe she was from the HINES family from Catawba Co. NC.

3rd wife Susan TRAMMELL-DAUGHERTY (DOUGHERTY) married William either 4-4-1865 or 11-2-1864 Jackson Co. IL.
her children (and probably not all with William as I have a clue she was likely married to a John V. Daugherty before):
Candace, Billy, Joseph S., Edward H. DUNCAN, James Scott, and Albert E. DUNCAN

Albert E Duncan is my great grandfather and I am having no success in finding information about who his mother was. His death certificate says her name was Susan TRAMMELL. Lore says Albert was raised by a doctor in south Missouri, where I know he lived and died.
He married his cousin (or half niece) Viola DUNCAN who was the grand daughter of the same William DUNCAN and Amanda HUTSELL.

if any of these names tie in with your families, stories, or anything you may have seen in research, I really need some help.

I was there last week, and the final resting place of Malinda Garrett Shelton Smith remains a mystery. I found Levi Smith's grave marker. It's still in pretty good shape. I took a photo but it didn't come out right. There were a lot of the small footstones that you described scattered throughout the cemetery, but there were none by Levi Smith's grave. There were some that had inscriptions on them, but I didn't find any with M.E.S. Most of those stones were not inscribed or no longer had inscriptions.

It was a cold day and it was starting to get dark, so I had to call off the search. I had a pretty productive day there--outside of Malinda. My intention is to make another visit to Campbell Hill the next time I go to St. Louis, which will be either in the spring or summer. I have some people at Calvary Cemtery too. I'll take another shot at finding Malinda then.

The other information I have on Malinda (and you might already know this and more)is that she was married to Leonard Thomas Shelton in Bedford/Coffee Co. Tennessee in 1846. He died some time before 25 Jan 1855 (the date Malinda married Levi Smith) and, according to "The Descendents of Jessee Shelton" is probably buried in the family plot. There are a number of graves there marked with fieldstones, and one of them probably is his. There's not much more about him, except that he joined the Garrison Forks Baptist Church and was subsequently excommunicated for using profanity. I didn't know much about Malinda (or anything about Levi) until I started working online. As I recall from the Jessee Shelton book (I have a copy but it got misplaced during my last move) she "moved with her second husband to Arkansas." Online work uncovered Levi as that second husband, and she and Levi and kids show up on the 1860 U.S. Census in Columbia, Randolph Co., Arkansas. They were in Bradley, Jackson Co., Illinois on the 1870 census and the 1880 census. Malinda had a bunch of kids with Levi. I don't know where her kids with Leonard Shelton wound up, because they don't show on on the 1860 census. Some more work to do there.

Malinda shows up on the 1900 census (listed as "Belinda")living with son, Sherman, in Campbell Hill Village, Jackson County, Illinois. On the 1910 census, she was living with Sherman in Palestine, Randolph Co., Illinois.

And that's all I have for her right now. There are probably still some loose ends to tie up, and certainly more work for me to do on her children. Also, on Levi's life, pre-Malinda. This particular line in my family presents quite a few enigmas, and I accept the challenge!

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll certainly post here if/when I find Malinda's grave.

BTW-- here are Malinda's children with Leonard Thomas Shelton: William J. (1847-1909) Joseph (1849-) and my great-great grandmother, Martha Elizabeth (1851-1920)

The Jackson County Historical Society has the most complete list of cemeteries and gravemarkers in the county, and can help you with this. They have published books of the listings that could be borrowed interlibrary loan, and they also share the information with those who request it. Contact them at 618-684-6989 or their website at http://mysite.verizon.net/jchs/index.htm.

I don't have any info on Richard Earl Whelan, but I had an uncle named James "Jim" Whelan, married Florence Rose Jones. I know very little of the family. Florence was born Dec. 28, 1920. My dad was born in 1918 in Herrin, I assume Florence was also born in Herrin. Their mother, Flossie Hanson was born in Carbondale.

Florence and Jim lived in Chicago. 3 children, all born in Chicago:
Tommy B:1944
Frank Thomas b: 1955
Michael

You can contact me at sb_hart@hotmail.com

Did you ever get an answer for this? If your Malinda Garrett is the daughter of Johnson Garrett and Belinda Wilson, then I am her descendant through her daughter Martha Elizabeth Shelton, from her first husband Leonard Thomas Shelton, who died young. Martha Elizabeth and her first husband, my great-great-grandfather Henry Williams, are buried at Looney Springs as well. I'm going to be in the St. Louis area for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and hope to pay a visit to Looney Springs then. I can check it out if you still need the information.

For all interested in the Etherton Family in Jackson County, IL check out the following web site:

http://www.etherton.net/maingene.htm

While it does not appear to be currently active (last entry appears to have been made in 2000), the information provided some years ago is still of value, particularly the family tree charts and the individual pages that Joel Etherton prepared. Burials in the Etherton and Hagler Cemeteries are listed, although not in surname alphabetical order.

See also:

http://genealogytrails.com/ill/jackson/

This is an active site, with an energetic host.

Click on "Cemetery Records". Scroll down to "Etherton" to see the listings alphabetical by surnames.

See also "Shawcross GEDCOM Database" in the World Connect Project at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/. At the home page, click on "World Connect Project" (left side of page). Then enter "Shawcross" as the database name in the box on the left side.

Tom Shawcross began his website some years ago while researching his own family. He then decided to include any person with Jackson Co. connections. His is probably the largest online database for people connected to Jackson Co. He is very careful about adding names and information only if he has proper source documentation (He will not accept data from undocumented online family trees---and sadly, there are tons of family trees on Ancestry with no source documentation).

Hope this is of some usefulness.

Charlie Ross
