Elizabeth Daters, Adelheid's younger sister is my great great grandmother. I have parents:

Joseph Deters born Aug 1814 in Hanover Germany died April 20, 1897. I need to research the place but it was probably here in Galena, IL

Mary Anna Kipp born May 1808 in Germany.

I have found records of Maria Theresa Lampe marrying Joseph Gaber in 1882 and having a son George Emile Gaber in 1883.

Joseph Gaber then died in 1884.

I also show her being married to a Daters. I have no information on their children.
I get real confused at this point. My records are incomplete and seem not to match. I got some information from other family trees and I haven't been able to verify it yet.

The Daters family arrived in New Orleans on November 23, 1860. Adelheide and Elizabeth arrived earlier. There is information available but I have to visit my cousin to get it.

Kirk
thank you for your response. Joseph J. Daters married Anna Kipp 20 Apr 1897 according to the Marriage Record book. They had a child Clara in 1897. Joseph died in 1940 in Galena. That is all the info I have. Do you have more on them or their children? I do have quite a bit on brothers and sisters, but not sure how accurate. I believe Joseph was a half-brother to my grandfather George Gaber making us cousins? Be happy to share what I have. Thanks again. Joann

yes, and there is the difference in alphabet, even if they spelled it correctly or tried to write and slipped and wrote a letter in their own language. I don't do too bad figuring out words typed. but oh boy to figure out german handwriting is difficult to interpret for me.

I have some information from our Meyer book it is taken from an obit written by a family member. I know the children grew up with german, and probably a little of the german, but still I wonder sometimes if they mistaken words somehow like Fehring, or Schmoble. could that 'f' be a 's' or 'b'. and in Schmoble could that be Shmokle or somtehing else. or misunderstand whose tree they actually were.

I am still going to the library tomorrow but after reading other posts I think I can help quite a bit right now.

There are several different census areas around Galena. I always do my searches for JoDaviess county. That way they are all covered. On the top of the census it shows post office names that I have never heard of. The towns and townships are all familiar and I can take you to see them if you are ever in the area.

After saying that I did a search for Manemann in the 1870 census. Bernard H. Manemann is a Blacksmith in Menominee and his wife is Mary A. They are 25 and 22. They have a 2 year old son and a 2 month daughter so they were probably married in 1868.

Menominee is west of Galena about half way to Dubuque and is north of hwy 20 on the road to Sinsinawa, WI. The state line is just north of Menominee. It goes right through my Great Aunt's home. The kitchen is in WI.

Hope this helps,
Kirk
On the subject of spelling errors:

Even with the higher literacy rates of the 20th & 21st centuries, the spelling abilities of many people are horrific. And some of these people also work for governments, especially at low-wage jobs. Imagine the results when the spelling-challenged encountered strange names in a time of less-standardized spelling & it's easy to understand why detective work is a major part of family history.

I don't know of any materials encouraging migration to the tri-state area in particular but immigration agents routinely traveled in other countries to encourage migration to the US since labor was in short supply here. There were all kinds of booster literature, posters, how-to booklets, and so on in native languages.

In my classroom I have a complete set of sample materials on immigration (visas, baptismal records, ship menus, posters, etc.) which I purchased from Borders.

Monica

They may have been.

I wonder too if there was publicity in germany by agents ect trying to draw people to this area to mine and so forth. Has anyone heard of this?
If there was a spellingerror, itwould have to slide by so many people involved in government, and aida.

Do you have the same records in your files as the little old lady down the road from the cemetery had? I remember going to her house and she pulled out this old book and helped my look up my GGGrandfather who was buried in a paupers grave so that I can try to locate his actual spot and put a marker on it if I wished. She said she all the old books (I seen them all) of anyone buried in that cemetery...with stones or not.

I think that the youger two children must have died there in the county and perhaps the father Daniel did as well. I know he died in about 1861.
They came there from Canada. The eldest son John M was born in Galena.

Any info would be great

I have an undated obituary for Caroline CONNORS, a resident of Galena, who "passed away at her home on the East Side..." I believe she died after her sister, who died Jan. 2, 1914 and before the death of another sister, who died July 15, 1920. She's not included in Jo Daviess death registers at IRAD in DeKalb--and there's apparently no stone at St. Michael's in Galena where she's buried. Are there cemetery records? Does St. Michael's have cemetery/death records? The funeral was at St. Michael's. I'm now thinking she possibly died at a hospital in Dubuque, in spite of what the obituary reads. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Glen, I was wondering if you might check the Elmwood Cemetery (Warren Twp, Jo Daviess, IL) listing for me for Edward and Catherine Ten Eyck. Catherine's son's biography said his mother died in Warren in 1886. I have no exact date and no date on Edward except after 1880 per the census. I would like to find her death record and hope a date of death might help. Her maiden name was Phillips and her previous married name was Goddard. Her last name was Ten Eyck when she died. Thanks!
I did find Edward and Catherine Ten Eyck in the 1880 census, (spelled Tenroycke?)in Warren, Jo Daviess, IL. It notes he was born in NY in 1801 (age 79) and Catherine in VT. I imagine they died in Warren. Some of Catherine's family also died in Warren and are buried at the Elmwood Cemetery.

I don't know where in NY Edward came from, but some of Catherine's family settled in the Jefferson Co. NY area, and there are several Ten Eyck's in that region - perhaps this is where he originated?
Not sure if you are still looking for info on this, but I just stumbled across your 2006 post. The Catherine in the 1860 census is Catherine Phillips, second wife of Edward Ten Eyck. She was born in VT, then moved to Canada (Stukely, Quebec) where she married William Goddard in 1827. They had about 8 children. Some were born in Canada, some Wisconsin. She then married Edward Ten Eyck in 1859 in Illinois. She lived near her siblings: brother Nathan Phillips and sister Lucy (Phillips) Plummer in Plum River, IL.

I'm not sure of what happened to her after 1870 - do you have any further information on her?

It appeares he died 2 1/2 years ago in Wash. DC. He was a former Ambassador to Oman, and held diplomatic post in Cairo and Tel Aviv. Also, Beirut I believe. He was a middle east expert. Apple Canyon Lake was not there in 54 as I used to walk the canyon. I can`t find Marshall`s widow. Do you know where she is? She is from Tel Aviv.
Cousin Ann Marshall Wiley had a summer home in the Apple River Canyon called "Cuddle Doon". Does anyone remember that place. It was in a pasture, by an old iron bridge. She used to have artists come and stay for a week or two in the summer. Husband was Bob Wiley. Son was Ambassador Marshall Wiley (deceased). I am wondering if Marshall`s widow lives there now? My Mother is still living at age 98 and 1/2. She is from Nora. Margaret Gallagher. Also, the Daly family lived on the west side of Nora. Hazel married Willard Marshall and moved to Sheridan, WY.
Don't know Ann Marshall Wiley, but I'm a descendant of the Daly's from Nora. John and Ellen Hogan Daly were my maternal great grandparents. Ken, we were in touch years ago. Great to see you're still searching.
Does anyone know who the Daly folks are from Galena in the 1850 Census? John, Bridget and Daniel. It's the right age for my Great Grandfather, but we thought he had not yet come to Jo Daviess Co until later. Would appreciate any info folks have.
Callahan's From Galena.IL

I am a great grandson of Hugh Callahan born 1856 in Galena Illinois. I am researching my family ancestry, specifically I am hoping to find any information about Hugh’s father Edward Callahan born 1824 from Co Fermanagh Ireland as well any information about Edward’s wife Mary(Riley), his siblings ( Michael , James, Thomas, Edward?) many of which arrived in the US early to mid 1800’s and their father Thomas Callahan.

Below is the information I’ve gather thus far from cemetery tombstones, newspaper obituaries, court and census documents in Galena Illinois, and from the Galena Historical Society.

Facts:

Edward Callahan - from Co Fermanagh Ireland -born 1824.
His wife, Mary (Riley) Callahan - Ireland -born approx 1824
Arrived in Gilford County, Galena, Illinois (IL) in 1848 (land records)
Edward buys a farm 1848 in Guilford County, later selling to his brother Michael
Edward and Mary marry 5-31-1846 in Galena, IL (church records)

Daughter Mary A. 4yrs old born in 1846 (1850 census)
Son Thomas 2yrs old born in 1848 (1850 census)
Also living in the same house per 1850 census:
Martha Harmon age 33 from New York
Charles age 21 from IL
Mary age 5 from IL
Sarah age 3 from IL

Son Hugh born May 1856 (1860 census & Obit)

April 20th 1853 Edward buys a farm JoDaviess Co, IL
E1/2 of the SE1/4 Sec 19 Township 28, 80 acres for $350

Edward’s wife Mary died 8-31-1859 at home in Guilford Co. Edward was arrested for suspicion of murder.
2 weeks later he is released from jail. Galena Daily Courier dated Sept 1st and 3rd and the 19th show Edward was released and case dismissed.
Edward left town after the death of his wife Mary.
The Galena Advertiser on April 25th 1863 reports that Edward Callahan returns from Pikes Peak after an absence of four years and was shot dead during a disturbance in downtown Galena by Deputy Hopkins and Sheriff John Hawkins. Other unknown Callahan brothers were arrested.

The son, Hugh, my great grandfather, was living with his Uncle James Callahan on a farm in Sec 20 Guilford Township JoDaviess, IL.
(1860 and 1870 census shows Hugh at age 1 as nephew and then again age 12 as nephew.)

1860 through 1878
Property tax records are paid each year for Edwards Callahan 80 acres farm Sec 19 Township 28 Guilford
Not sure who was living there, no name was signed in the books, possibly Edward’s brothers were operating the farm starting 1860 through 1878
In 1879, however, Hugh Callahan son of Edward signs and pays the taxes on the farm.

Dec 23rd 1879 Hugh Callahan now age 23 buys the farm E1/2 of the SE1/4 Sec 19 Township 28, 80 acres from the late Edward Callahan his father. Present for the sale are Edwards brothers Michael and James.

Mar 20th 1884 Hugh Callahan age 28 sells the 80 acre farm to Lawrence Mahon for $2100

The same day Mar 20th 1884 Hugh Callahan age 28 buys from his Uncle James Callaghan E1/2 of the SW ¼ of Sec 20. 4 acres of the farm was donated for Taylor school house. The farm location is now the Owners Club in the Galena Territories the barn’s rock foundation still in place with the farm land mostly under water now.

1886-Hugh Callahan marriage to Catherine Bermingham 9-29-1886
They had two sons:
George born 2-12-1889
John J. born 6-22-1895

1912- Hugh and Catherine retire and move to 622 Franklin St Galena
George lives on the farm

1914- George and Christina Huilman married they lived Galena Territory Farm
Gert only child born here in 1915

1918- John J listed in WW1 France deployed for 11 months

1921- Catherine (Kate) Callahan Hugh’s wife dies

1925-John James Callahan marries Agnes Dillon 6-9-1925

1927- John F Callahan born 9-25-1927 on Franklin St Galena,IL

Dec 28th 1928 Hugh sells the Homestead to Leo Foley

Mentioned in Hugh Callahan Obit Jan 11, 1933: Hugh is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Callahan born in Guilford Township in May 1856 and died at the home of his son John J. at age 76 yrs.
