My Burke is John Burke born in Utica, New York 1865 and married to Bridget Connell. He died in Nov. of 1944 in Amboy. He owned a farm in Section #5 in Amboy according to the 1921 Plat Book. There were 5 children, one died in infancy. The other four were Mayme (maybe Mary) Thomas, Margaret and Gladys. I remember a story of Ellie Bittman living with them when she was very elderly - the 1940's. Does any of this sound familiar?

I am in Ohio and was hoping someone could help me. I am looking for a marriage record of George Reed to Mary surname unknown. It was between 1863-1865. I am not sure of the exact date. I know George was born in Ohio around 1841.
They had children that were born in Lee County: George abt 1870 and Eliza abt 1865. Can someone tell me where I need to start to locate these records? I know that George worked on the RailRoad so I am sure they didn't stay in this county long. Thanks in advance for help!
Tonya

Thanks for the information! You did find the correct information on Johannes "Johnson" Rommereim. I was mistaken on the farmer's name that he worked for which should be "Egbert Christopher" instead of "Christoper Egbert". There is another Christopher family (possibily a brother) John Christopher listed next this entry in the 1870 Lee County, Alto Township Census. What was the name of your gg grandmother's brother that also worked on the same Christopher farm? Does anyone know this Christopher family in Lee County? Thanks, Scott

Ha! One of the other Norwegians listed in that same household in 1870 is actually a brother of my own great-great grandmother.

You might try reading the published history of Lee County, Illinois. If Christopher Egbert (I'm not so sure about the spelling of last name) was a substantial land owner he may be mentioned in that book.
"History of Lee County, together with Biographical Matter, Statistics, etc." pub. 1881, H.H. Hill and Company, Publishers and available on LDS microfilm #0934998.

There is also a book entitled "A history of the Norwegians of Illinois" available on LDS microfilm #0934967 that might give you some information.

Perhaps your "John Johnson" came from Hosanger area of Hordaland, Norway -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

Returning to America with a new bride in 1876 -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
Thanks for the information! My Great Great Grandfather John Rommereim came from Norway 1870 and settled in Alto Township. I found a Census record for Alto Township that appears to show him listed as John Johnson and possibly working as a farm hand for Christopher Egbert. Does anyone know anything about the Egberts and if he had a large farm at the time. John later went back to Norway in 1876 to marry his wife Anna. They returned to Lee County for a few years before moving on to Lincoln County, SD in 1880. Three children were born in Illinois including my Great Grandmother Martha. I don't know much about what they did or where they lived during their years in Lee County other than the Census record, but hoping someone has some information. Thanks, Scott

There was a Norwegian family near Franklin Grove their home was in what is now part of Franklin Creek State Natural Area
the story is they were murdered for thier gold. In the park tthe spot is called Norweagian's hill. This is the story.

Tragedy at Franklin Grove.—In 1848 or 1849 a Norwegian living at Franklin Grove was visited by a friend of the same nationality who purposed spending the night with him. They occupied the same bed, and after falling asleep an assassin entered the room and with an ax dispatched both men in their bed, where they were afterward found horribly mutilated and bathed in their own blood. The murder was supposed to have been committed for the purpose of robbery, as the man residing there was reputed to have had money in his possession, whom the robber doubtless expected to find alone. The perpetrator of the bloody deed was never detected, but was believed to be connected with the " Banditti of the Prairie," to which reference is made above.

This is from the Book History of Lee Co. I found in on Google books.

Jim

Yes, there was. I'm not sure the emigrants ever created a single large settlement but there was a long history of Norwegian emigrants making an early stop after arriving in the US in the areas of Lee, LaSalle, and other nearby counties. (Does this seem near to the "Fox River" area that was so strong in Norwegian settlers?) My own stayed in the Lee Co. area until the civil war was over and then they continued to migrate west. A few parts of my family still live in Lee Co -- I ran into one just a couple years ago while on a trip across the country during casual conversation between two complete strangers.

With the new statute in Dixon, my dad swears that the horse in the statute is the horse named Billy he rode as a boy using my Grandpa's military style saddle depicted on the statute. The horse Billy was owned by my Grandpa Cecil Heaton and loaned out the the Renner's whenever Reagan visited them. Dad thinks that either Gilbert or Chet Renner went to Eureka College with Ronald Regan. Hoping there is someone who can verify one of the Renner boys was in Reagan's class. Based on a little research, I believe both Chet and Gilbert have passed away. Maybe a Renner family member or friend has also heard the story.

I'm REALLY hoping for some help here - I have been looking for a death record of this woman for over 5 years now. I just was reading through an old family tree from a distant cousin and found what I think is the final clue.

Angeline Hogmire was born 5/23/1839 at Leicester, Livingston Co NY. She married and had 4 children with Jefferson Draper Harris in Van Buren Co MI and then she vanished.

This family tree says she married Henry Southard after the death of Jefferson and "moved to IL". I find Henry and Angeline Southard living with his son James in the 1900 and 1910 Alto, Lee Co IL census. In 1910 Henry is 85, Angeline is 71. By 1920 they are both gone.

James and his wife are in both the 1920 and 1930 census for Alto so I'm very hopeful (and highly suspect) that this is where Angeline died and was buried.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can be in finding this for me! I'm hoping to find a burial location and an obituary but at this point I'd just like to fill in the blank death date!
Information on Horace in Pennsylvania.

Here is Horace in the 1850 census. It cannot conclusively be determined whose son he. He is either the illegitimate son of Samuel and Phoebe's daughter Agnes, or he is the son of their son Jonathan and presumably a deceased wife of his.

1850 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Montgomery > Mooreland

Samuel Gilbert 61 Wheelwright
Phoebe 61
Agnes 22
Jonathan 30 Wheelwright
Horace 2

In 1860, Horace is now living with Samuel and Phoebe's son George and family.

1860 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Chester > Easttown

George Gilbert 48 Wheelwright
Deborah 54
Daniel 20 Miller
Elwood 18 "
Harriet 16
Mary 11
Horace 12

In 1870, Horace is now living in Lee Co., IL and appears to be listed twice. In the first listing, he is shown living in an Emery household.

1870 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Lee > Palmyra

Charles Emery 31 PA
Catherin 31 IL
...children...
Horace Gilbert 22 PA

In this listing in 1870, he is shown living with the widow of Howard Gilbert, who was a younger son of George and Phoebe.

1870 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Lee > Dixon

Elizabeth Gilbert 31 PA
May 11 IL
Emma 9 IL
Florence 7 IL
Miller 5 IL
John 2 IL
Horace 22 PA

A Y-DNA test by a male descendant of Horace still carrying the Gilbert name would likely shed light on who Horace's father was. Another male descendant of Samuel has been tested, so the DNA of Gilbert line is known (in theory). If Horace was the illegitimate son of Agnes, his DNA would not match the Gilbert line.
